Detailed Review

The BMW 7-series in not the company's flagship luxury sedan just for saying. It has all the might to stand up to that name. From the power to the safety it leaves all its competitors in dust. The 740i has a lot to brag about, its design, power, handling, features, safety, and efficiency everything is just awesome, and not to mention the other variants the 7-series offers

The 7-series starts at about $81,500, it is equipped with a 320hp engine with 8-speed automatic transmission. It has very aggressive body design, the iconic LED headlamps, and the W-Kidney grille makes it more aggressive looking. The 740i is pretty much equipped with everything that a luxury sedan can offer not to mention all those new features and safety system.

7.9/10

We recommend

The 740i is pretty luxurious on its own and is no less than its competitors. The variants for the 7-series offers additional luxury, not additional power so you can go according to your preferences because the performance offered will be the same. Whether you go for the 740i or 750i go for the xDrive variant as it will work as a performance surplus.

2017 BMW 7 Series hybrid Engine

The base inline-6 should satisfy most shoppers with its seamless turbocharged thrust and laudable refinement, but the V8 takes things to another level...

Engine and transmission

The 740i features a 320 hp 3.0L straight 6-cylinder Turbocharged engine which produces 330 lb.-ft. of torque. It has an 8-speed automatic transmission with rear wheel drive drivetrain. This powerhouse offers some insane performance and has very economical fuel efficiency.

In terms of competition, the BMW has the least powerful engine. The S550 sedan leads the segment as it is equipped way more powerful engine and has some insane torque production.

Acceleration

The 740i races from 0-60 in mere 5.4 seconds. with a quarter mile margin of 13.2 sec. Whether it's a sedan, coupe or SUV the BMW never disappoint in performance. The 330 hp powerhouse with rear-wheel drivetrain turns out to be a perfect choice.

The 0-60 mph acceleration times for all the cars are pretty close. The Mercedes sure is a 0.1 sec faster than 740i, but the powerhouse it has and the performance it offers, it is totally disappointing. As for the other cars they are no less either. The Mercedes S 550 might lead the segment but the 7-series is the real winner.

Ride and Handling

The BMW cars are also one of the best handling cars in the world. From the steering to the transmission everything changes as you switch between the 3-drive modes (sports, comfort, comfort+). The power steering makes driving easier while the air suspension takes care of unwanted roads. Even after being heavy the car steers smoothly at corners and is really stable.

The automatic transmission shift s down automatically depending on the navigation system which is a bit weird. Its active chassis works on a BMW home developed system called Active Comfort Drive which adjusts the suspension as per the road conditions and driving modes.

Braking

The BMW 740i is blessed with a really powerful braking system. It features 17.7/14.5 front/rear 4-wheel ventilated disc brakes with composite rotors, anti-lock braking system, dynamic stability control, brake drying, brake standby, and dynamic traction control. For a luxury sedan weighing 4195 lbs. you need these features.

Brake Rear(in) 14.5 14.0 11.8 12.8
Curb Weight(lbs) 4195 4464 4773 3891
60-0 MPH (ft.) 112 118 ------- 122

The 740i takes only 112 ft. to stop from 60-0 mph. The braking power of this sedan is intense and those additional safety features also work as safety features. Jaguar XJ is the only sedan here lighter than the beemer, although that doesn't help its braking performance.

2017 BMW 7 Series hybrid Fuel Economy

7.3/10

For a 330 hp sedan, the 740i is pretty fuel efficient. It offers an average mileage of 21/29 mpg in city/highway with a combined mileage of 24 mpg.

MPG (City) 21 19 18 18
MPG (Highway) 29 29 26 27
MPG (Combined) 24 22 21 21

The 740i also has the best in class fuel efficiency followed by the Audi and Jaguar. The Mercedes might be the least efficient but considering the power it offers its fuel efficiency is pretty good.

2017 BMW 7 Series hybrid Interior

7.8/10
The 2017 BMW 7 Series ranks near the top of its class. It has a comfortable and roomy interior, user-friendly tech features, pleasant driving dynamics, and muscular engines. -cars.usnews

Its quite a fight between these cars in terms of interior space, but there isn't much difference between the three. The Merc and the Audi offer the best rear space, which probably is the most important criteria in this segment.

Cargo volume

The BMW 740i has best in class cargo volume. It features18.2 cubic foot of cargo space. For a luxury sedan that's a massive cargo volume thanks to its massive body dimension.

Volume (ft cube) 18.2 14.2 16.3 15.2

The Audi A8L offers the least cargo space, quite disappointing for a car with such a high price tag. The Jag and Merc fare better, but fall behing the BMW.

Dimension and Weight

The BMW 740i has a low-profile aerodynamic body. It looks aggressive, has a muscular looking body. The LED headlamps and tail light, the iconic W-kidney grille and M-series body design complement its aggressive looks. This luxury sedan is 206.6 inches long, 74.8 inch wide and has a body height of 58.2. The massive body dimension saves a lot of cargo and interiors space.

The 5.8 inch ground clearance keeps the vehicle low while 126.4 wheel base provide stability to this heavy sedan. The side view mirror has power folding, auto-dimming features and they adjust as you shift for reverse or parking for a better view and it also has tilt and sliding moonoof.

2017 BMW 7 Series hybrid Competition

BMW 7-series vs Audi A8

The Audi A8 features a 333hp engine with 8-speed automatic transmission producing 325lb.-ft. of torque. The A8 offers has almost the same dimension as the 7-series and offers the same performance, but way less cargo volume, fuel efficiency, braking performance than the BMW 740i. The A8 is a very luxurious sedan but when compared to BMW 740i it still lacks some effort.

BMW 7-series vs Mercedes-Benz S550 Sedan

The S550 Sedan is priced at $96,595, it is the costliest car in this whole class. It features a 449hp powerhouse with a 9-speed automatic transmission which produces an immense torque of 516 lb.-ft. but, its performance is disappointing for a car of such caliber. It is the heaviest and the least fuel-efficient car in the whole section. Compared to the Mercedes BMW excels in all aspects.

BMW 7-series vs Jaguar XJ

The Jaguar XJ is a looker and by far the prettiest car in this comparison. The beauty continues on the inside too, although space is a bit compromised. If you were to choose between form and function, Jaguar suits the latter while BMW the former.

2017 BMW 7 Series hybrid Final Verdict

The BMW 7-series is not the company's flagship luxury sedan just for saying. It has all the might to stand up to that name. From the power to the safety it leaves all its competitors in the dust. The 740i has a lot to brag about, its design, power, handling, features, safety, and efficiency everything is just awesome, and not to mention the other variants the 7-series offers.

Well the powerhouse changes as you switch between the variants as well the prices rise too, but the additional features they are offering are just perfect for that price tag. The 7-series is less family more of a professional's car but you can still enjoy driving it.
