2018 BMW 7 Series plug-in hybrid Sedan Engine

“Whether you're rolling in the base model, the plug-in hybrid, or one of the high-horsepower versions, there's no shortage of power in the 2018 BMW 7 Series. Yet what is even more impressive is the surprising agility of this large sedan. Following through on its luxury focus, the ride is superbly quiet and smooth.”- cars.usnews

The super luxury Bimmer employs a hybrid engine, which is the combination of a 2.0-Liter turbocharged V4 engine and an electric motor.  Consequently, the combined power and torque figures of the hybrid engine correspond to 322 hp and 369 lbs.-ft., which is quite impressive. For the efficient transmission of engine power to the wheels of the 2018 BMW 740e xDrive iPerformance, an 8-speed shiftable automatic gearbox is utilized.

The power figures of both Porsche Panamera 4 and Lexus LS 500h are greater than that of the BMW 740 iPerformance. Whereas, the torque of the BMW 740e is second best after the massive 516 lbs.-ft. of torque produced by the Panamera’s hybrid engine. For gear shifting, the Panamera 4 relies on an 8-speed automatic transmission while the Lexus LS 500h comes with the less efficient 4-speed automatic transmission.

Having only a 2.0-Liter engine in a big luxury sedan like the 2018 BMW 740e xDrive iPerformance may look insufficient but in reality, it’s not. In fact, the Bimmer is capable of touching the 60 mph speed mark from a complete standstill in only 5.1 seconds after pushing the throttle to its limits. Furthermore, by continuing the aggressive acceleration, the vehicle can cover the quarter-mile distance in just 13.7 seconds.

The 0-60 mph time of Lexus LS 500h is only 0.1 seconds more than the BMW 740e Sedan but the quarter-mile time of LS500h is lesser. On the other side, the Porsche’s Panamera is the quickest with its unparalleled 0-60 mph time of merely 4.4 seconds and quarter mile time of 11.6 seconds.

Ride and Handling

With a fancy engine performance, driving the sedan makes one feel peppy especially when the Sport mode is selected. Furthermore, the AWD drivetrain and 8-speed automatic transmission allow the 740e to glide smoothly on roads. The electric motor coupled with the turbocharged engine works well and allows the users to save few bucks on the gas.

At the suspension section, the 740e employs a double wishbone suspension at the front while the multi-link suspension is incorporated at the rear that works perfectly to make the cabin comfortable even on bad roads.

Additionally, the aerodynamic designing of the vehicle is done with high precision to keep it completely stable while cruising at high speeds. Coming to the handling of the sedan, its power steering makes the handling responsive but due to the extra-long body, maneuvering becomes an issue in congested areas.

The materials used in the construction of the 740e xDrive iPerformance results in it to become lighter vehicle than its major rivals. However, despite having a lightweight body, the sedan requires a significant braking distance of 123 feet while slowing down from 60 mph to 0. The braking mechanisms of both the Porsche Panamera 4 and the Lexus LS 500h are better with their 60-0 mph distances being 104 and 113 feet respectively.
