Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The engine powering the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe is a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 mated to an 8-speed sport automatic transmission. There are two trims on offer with this base powertrain configuration one with RWD and the other one featuring BMW’s proprietary xDrive AWD while the higher-end more powerful M850i xDrive and M8 Gran Coupe models are reviewed separately. The 2021 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe competes with the 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 43 Sedan, the 2021 Porsche Panamera 4 Sedan, and the 2021 Audi S7 Premium Plus

2021 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe Features

The 2021 BMW 840i is available in two variants that are the base 840i with an RWD drivetrain and the 840i xDrive with an AWD drivetrain. Both models are powered by the same 3.0 L Inline-6 engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. There are two external appearances available to choose from, the standard one and the M Sport Package for an extra cost that adds M Sport Brakes with blue calipers, M Steering Wheel, and the M Aerodynamic package.

Available packages include the Driving Assistance Package ($100), Driving Assistance Professional Package ($1,700), and the Comfort Seating Package ($1,200) that comes with front ventilated seats that can be set to automatically cool down or warm-up along with some other optional features and extras available. Overall the 840i models are pretty feature-packed and come with a great set of standard features. The following are the main features included with the 2021 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe-

We Recommend

The 2021 8 Series Gran Coupe in the 840i xDrive trim would be the ideal choice as it comes with the added stability and capability of the AWD drivetrain over the feature-packed 840i. The 840i models are impressively capable and the 3.0 L six banger is powerful, smooth, and packs a punch. You could opt for the M Sport Package for a sportier-looking exterior and the Comfort Seating Package for more comfort inside the car. Other than that the standard feature set itself is very much all-inclusive.

2021 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe Engine and Performance

The engine under the hood of the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe is a 3.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder, 24-valve engine producing 335 hp and 368 lb-ft of maximum power and torque. This powertrain combines a twin-scroll turbocharger with variable valve control (Double-VANOS and Valvetronic) and high-precision direct injection and electronic throttle control to provide a smooth and punchy power delivery. The 840i model is RWD while the 840i xDrive gets AWD. Both models are mated to an 8-speed Sport Automatic transmission with Sport and Manual shift modes, along with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, and launch control.

The 8 Series Gran Coupe also features an active kidney grille consisting of bars and flaps in the lower air intake that automatically swing open whenever additional cooling air is required to the engine while the powertrain also gets an electronically controlled engine cooling (map cooling) setup. BMW has also equipped a standard sport exhaust system in the 840i models. The car also features Driving Dynamics Control with Eco Pro, Comfort, and Sport modes, and with launch control engaged in Sport mode could take the 840i xDrive to a speed of 60mph in 4.6 seconds while the quarter-mile is crossed in 13.3 seconds.

The 2021 Porsche Panamera is the least powerful and slowest among these magnificent machines. The least expensive Audi S7 is the most powerful and also is the fastest one here thus being the most value for money option. The S7 is around 100 hp more powerful than the competitors that make it the strongest choice while the Mercedes even with the lower power output closely keeps up with the Audi in terms of speed figures while it also has the highest top speed. The Porsche is the weakest performer here and compared to it the BMW is much better, but for the price paid, the Audi provides the most.

How well does the 2021 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe Drive and Handle?

The 2021 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe is a magnificent machine and it comes with everything expected from a proper BMW. The car handles impressively and is very much engaging to drive both in straight lines as well as around corners. The car stays stable and is confidence-inspiring at very high speeds and maintains immense traction especially if the xDrive AWD trim is chosen. The Gran Coupe is not much different from the Coupe model of the 8 Series as it is nimble and easily maneuverable despite its larger footprint.

The sterling of the 8 Series Gran Coupe is its worst selling point. Even though the electric steering wheel is precise and offers accurate responses, it feels a bit disconnected from the driver and the response is vague. The braking performance is also capable while it is not very progressive. Overall the performance of the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe is confidence-inspiring and it is thrilling to drive around in the canyons and around corners while it’s not the best straight-line performer.

How efficient is the braking performance of the 2021 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe?

The 2021 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe is equipped with 4-wheel ventilated disc brakes with an anti-lock braking system (ABS). The braking system consists of composite front rotors and Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), along with brake-pad wear indicators, and Cornering Brake Control (CBC). The brakes are evidently strong and responsive but the brake pedal doesn’t provide a progressive response. But the braking system does function effectively and brings the vehicle to a stop at a distance of 114 ft which is actually good but not the best in the segment.

The Audi S7 packs the strongest brakes in the segment while the 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 43 Sedan stops at the shortest distance. The Porsche and the Audi S7 are in the same ballpark between the Merc and the BMW in terms of braking distance. The 8 Series Gran Coupe takes the longest distance to come to a stop from 60mph and the difference is around 10ft between the Merc and the Bimmer which is significant.

2021 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe Fuel Economy

BMW’s performance cars have always had a reputation for being comparatively more fuel-efficient than the competition. And this reputation is kept up by the M40i models also. The xDrive AWD model puts out a fuel economy of 20 mpg in the city, 27 on the highway, and a combined efficiency of 23 mpg. Along with an 18.0-gallon fuel capacity, the AWD model delivers a range of 360 miles in the city, 486 on the highway, and a range of 414 miles in combined road and driving conditions. The 840i RWD model churns out 2 mpg more in all road conditions boosting the mpg and range figures to 22/29/25 mpg and 396/522/450 miles respectively.

The BMW is obviously the most efficient machine here closely followed by the Mercedes and the Audi while the Porsche Panamera lags behind. The Porsche however, gets the largest fuel capacity which enables it to provide the longest range in all road conditions. The BMW has the smallest fuel tank, but with the higher mpg figures it holds up well against the competition. The BMW if opted with the RWD drivetrain smokes all of the competition in terms of range also.

2021 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe Interior

The interior trim could be opted in various shades and materials including Fineline Copper Wood, Ash Grain Grey-Metallic Wood, or Aluminum DarkTrace, all of which are free of cost options while there are also the Individual Piano Black Finish or the Ash Black Silver Wood both of which cost around $1,080. There are also some other customization choices available including the options to choose an Alcantara headliner in upholstery color which would cost you around $650 and you could also get glass controls including a crystal-finished gear knob for around the same price.

Everything is made up of premium quality materials and the 2021 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe has a spacious and luxurious cabin although headroom is limited in the rear row by the sleeping roofline. The seats are as expected covered in leather and there are numerous color choices available along with the exclusive BMW Individual upholstery choices. The front seats are extremely comfortable while the second row lacks headroom whereas there is plenty of legroom in both rows. The 8 Series Gran Coupe comes with a 15.5 cu-ft cargo capacity that provides room for enough luggage while is not adequately spacious.

The competitors in this segment are overall similarly spacious while the Audi has an edge as it comes with a higher cargo capacity over the others. The multi-input iDrive 7.0 system could be operated by voice, touchscreen, or the iDrive touchpad controller. 2021 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe Competition

2021 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe vs 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 43 Sedan

The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 43 Sedan is an amazing machine while being slightly more expensive than the BMW. The Mercedes offers a strong and punchy engine and happens to be faster than the BMW. It also comes with thrilling handling and much better steering response compared to the BMW. The interior of both the models are impressive and luxurious while all the positives of the Mercedes justify its higher price and make it the better choice among these two.

2021 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe vs 2021 Porsche Panamera 4 Sedan

The 2021 Porsche Panamera 4 is a great machine crafted with utmost precision on the inside, outside as well as under the hood while it also happens to be the most expensive option among these machines. However, the Panamera is much lower-powered and slower than the BMW while the BMW is faster and has a lower price tag. The BMW also offers a better set of standard features over the Panamera making it the overall better choice.

2021 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe vs 2021 Audi S7 Sedan

The 2021 Audi S7 is a great value-for-money choice in this segment. It is much less expensive than the competition while being significantly more powerful and offering very similar high-quality interior and luxury features on the inside. The S7 is clearly the best choice not just against the BMW, but overall in the segment due to its lower price tag and better performance. From a utility standpoint, it also offers the most cargo capacity among the competitors.

2021 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe Final Verdict

The new BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe is a superb car offered at a great price. It offers the swift agility and nimble handling of the 8 Series Coupe bundled with the added space, practicality, and comfort of the sedan. The exterior is extremely beautiful and it looks sharp and aggressive, while the interior is luxurious and comfortable and made up of high-quality materials. The performance is superior while the steering feels disconnected from the driver which is the main con of this machine. However, the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe is an amazing option in the segment.
