2017 BMW ALPINA B6 Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Everyone knows full well that the German auto giant BMW makes some of the best cars money can buy. They have been selling truckloads of cars each passing years which has compromised on the exclusivity factor. BMW has something in store for who yearn exclusivity and want to get only the best of the best, It's called the 2017 BMW B6 Gran Coupe Sedan.

The BMW B6 is born when a regular series 6 gran coupe reaches the Alpina motor company's garages which then throw in a bevy of performance, interior, and exterior upgrades to give the car their own spin. They only make around 1500 cars from the entire BMW range in a year, now that's exclusive.

The 6 series sedan which by no means lacks any grandeur, gets embezzled with awe strikingly good interior and performance to match or even surpass the M6 gran coupe. The BMW B6 is an exclusive car and requires big bucks to own with prices starting from $122,500.

2017 BMW ALPINA B6 Engine

9.4/10

“So many engines, so little time. Every 6 Series model features a potent engine that has ample power for every driving situation, but there are also several twin-turbocharged V8s to choose from if you want to do more than just get from Point A to Point B.” - cars.usnews

Engine and Transmission

The Alpina B6 utilizes a 4.4L bi-turbo V8 motor connected to an 8 speed modified ZF auto gearbox. The gearbox has been tuned by the engineers at Alpina to hold on to a lower gear for longer to enhance circuit driving. The engine produces a whopping 600 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque, great for leaving its rivals in the dust.

The competition is less powerful as compared to the Alpina. The Audi RS7 produces 560 hp, and the Panamera turbo 550 hp, great figures on their own, but pale when compared to the B6.

Acceleration

A car as lavish and grand as the Alpina B6 is still able to charge to 60 mph from a standstill in 3.4 seconds. This shows that the folks at Alpina have put some serious power under the hood of this beast. Even when the pedal is floored, the car maintains composure and feels too hard to handle.

In comparison with rivals, the Alpina B6 again takes the top spot at 3.4 seconds. The other contenders are not too far behind with the Audi RS7 clocking in 3.7 seconds and the Panamera turbo at 3.6 seconds. The Alpina loses out in quarter-mile acceleration, clocking in last behind the Audi and Porsche respectively.

Ride and handling

The Alpina B6 might look like a sedan but it handles more on the lines of a sports car. The car has the ability to zoom around corners at amazing speeds while still being able to maintain its composure. The 4 wheel drive system adds a lot of stability to the vehicle. The enhanced engine power assures that there is no lack of thrust at any point. It is arguably one of the best handling sedans in the segment.

Braking

The Alpina B6 features the smallest brakes in the segment. The front brakes are 14.7 inches while the rear rotors are 14.6 inches in size. The car is able to halt from 60 mph in a modest 110 feet, great for a car of such heft.

2017 BMW ALPINA B6 Fuel Economy

6.8/10

Even after its mammoth proportions, the Alpina B6 is able to return a modest 18 mpg combined. This may not sound too frugal but one has to take into consideration both the size and the power under the hood of the vehicle.

2017 BMW ALPINA B6 Interior

8.7/10

“Almost every interior surface of the 2017 Alpina B6 is trimmed with top-quality materials. The standard leather choices are luxurious and feature contrast stitching, with even more sumptuous fine-grain leathers as an extra-cost option.” - Edmunds

Seating and Comfort

Comfort is never going to be an issue if you own an Alpina B6; it's filled with top of the line materials with a host of upholstery options to choose from. The front seats are well appointed and perhaps one of the best in business, but the rear seats face a shortage of space due to the dipping roofline of the car.

The Alpina B6 happens to be the most spacious out of all the rivals in the segment.

The Panamera has the smallest rear cabin space, and quite disappointingly so. The RS7 fares the best in this regard, offering a great mix of front and rear cabin space.

Infotainment System

The infotainment system on the Alpina B6 is virtually carried over from the 6 Series sedan that it is based on.

  • Harman/Kardon Premium sound system with 16 speakers
  • Satellite Radio Service
  • AM/FM Stereo
  • USB Connection

The infotainment screen on the B6 is bumped to 10.2 inches as compared to the standard while the signature BMW idrive infotainment system handles the interface.

Interior Features

Some of the key interior features are:

  • Multi-function steering wheel
  • Steering mounted gear shifters
  • Leather upholstery

Cargo volume

The cargo volume on the Alpina B6 is limited to 16.2 feet behind the rear seat due to the gran coupe style which compromises on the rear space. The boot, however, is ergonomically designed and luggage can be loaded or unloaded rather comfortably.

2017 BMW ALPINA B6 Exterior

“The recently redesigned nose on the 2017 Alpina 6 Series is subtly effective, with the number of vertical bars in each "kidney" now nine instead of 10. The rear end looks menacing when viewed head-on, which is just as it should be.”- Kelley Blue Book

Dimensions and Weight

The Alpina B6 weighs in at a substantial 4780 lbs, which actually makes it the heaviest car in the segment by some margin. The B6 sports a wheelbase of 116.9 inches which also happens to be the longest in the segment.

2017 BMW ALPINA B6 Competition

Audi RS7 vs Alpina B6

The Audi RS7 is one of the flagship sedans from the automaker. The car features a beautifully designed interior and a strikingly good exterior styling. The engine, the theatricals and the big boot is what makes the Audi RS7 a great vehicle to own.

But, it can never be as exclusive as the BMW B6 although it does look a little better from the outside in our opinion.

Porsche Panamera Turbo vs Alpina B6

The Panamera turbo is essentially 911 sports car in 4 door guise. The car is a rocket on the road and performs beautifully well on tracks as well. The interior game might not be as strong as on the B6 but nobody can deny the fact it one of the coolest interiors in the market.

But, again, it loses out on exclusivity and comfort. Both the places where the B6 excels.

2017 BMW ALPINA B6 Final Verdict

The Alpina B6 is a car so exclusive that most people haven’t probably even heard of it. It is more likely that one will encounter a LaFerrari than the B6. The car has such unique touches that ups the games on so many levels. It is a beauty in all respects that better even the M6 gran coupe in a few segments. If you can afford to buy one, rush to your nearest dealership and book yourself a future classic car as soon as possible.
