2018 BMW ALPINA B6 Engine

6.8/10

On the road the B6 feels massively rapid, thanks mainly to the torque it produces from seemingly any engine speed and in any gear...
...The exhaust note is rather delicious too, Alpina’s modifications gifting the B6 with a depth and range of noises that are endlessly entertaining to listen to. -Autocar.co.uk

Engine and Transmission

Acceleration

The Alpina B6 has breathtaking acceleration. Thanks to the massive 590 lb-ft of torque produced by its 4.4 L V8 the B6 makes 0-60 MPH in mere 3.6 seconds and a quarter mile run in under 12 seconds. The 4.4-Liter engine growls everytime you put your foot hard down.

The fastest of all is Audi RS7 taking just 3.2 seconds to do 0-60 MPH followed by the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG.

Handling and Ride quality

The Alpina B6 is essentially an all-wheel-drive car, unlike the regular BMW M6. With power sent to all four wheels, the Alpina handles like no other BMW. The drive is precise and sharp with tuned up suspensions taking all the imperfections of the road. Also, the steering has a great amount of feedback from the road and you feel planted at high-speed cornering. Hence, the BMW Alpina B6 is more of a high-speed cruiser than a sports car for the tracks.

Braking

The BMW Alpina B6 has decent braking figures. Even with one of the heaviest bodies around, it does stopping distance of 108 feet from 0-60 mph, it does a good job.

2018 BMW ALPINA B6 Fuel Economy

6.8/10

Owning an ultra rare car like the BMW Alpina B6, one wouldn't mind about its fuel economy. Even though the Alpina B6 with a massive V8 has an EPA rating of 16 MPG in the city, 25 MPG on the highway and 19 MPG combined. These numbers are good for such a huge car with a V8 engine.

2018 BMW ALPINA B6 Interior

7.6/10

The front seats are relatively low-set for a sporty feel with a good amount of space; the rear seats will accommodate adults but are more confining than those in traditional sedans. -Edmunds

Seating and Comfort

The BMW Alpina B6 comes with a plush interior design and comfort. The B6's interior is wrapped in high-quality leather upholstery with bits of exotic materials. The front seats are heated as well as 16 way adjustable with 4-way lumbar adjustment. The front seats are placed low for a sporty feel. The Alpina B6 has enough leg room for front and rear passengers and can accommodate a total of five passengers.

Getting in is pretty easy with wide door openings except for the rear passengers may have to duck in because of the sloping roofline. Opting for the Executive package adds ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, and ceramic trimmed controls.

Infotainment

The infotainment system is carried over from the regular BMW M6. It features the  BMW's iDrive infotainment system with a 10.2-inch infotainment display. It is also equipped:

  • Sat Nav
  • DAB radio
  • USB connectivity
  • Built-in-hotspot
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Bang & Olufsen 16 speakers audio system (Optional)

One can also opt for heads up display. Sadly, the BMW does not come with Android Auto.

Cargo Capacity

The Alpina B6 has 13 cubic feet of volume without the seats folded. It has the smallest trunk in this segment compared to Audi's massive 24.5 cubic feet of trunk volume. Also, the lid opening is on the higher side making loading and unloading of heavier bags difficult.

2018 BMW ALPINA B6 Competition

Alpina B6 vs Audi RS7 Performance

The Audi RS7 has got a complete makeover from the last generation. With major exterior upgrades, it has a greater impact than the BMW B6 which more or less resembles the original BMW M6. On the inside, the RS7 is equipped with the latest technology like virtual cockpit by Audi. It also has better performance figures than the B6 as well.

The only drawback one might consider for the B6 is its exclusivity. It is not as exclusive as the BMW B6. Since it has a limited production run, the BMW B6 has a strong reason to be bought.

Alpina B6 vs Jaguar XJR 575

The Jaguar XJR is the ultimate version of the regular XJ. It has a massive looking elegant exterior design. Though it has got the same engine straight off the F-type it couldn't keep up with the performance figures of the BMW Alpina B6. Also, the Jaguar is equipped with the same outdated interior of the XJ. With better performance, features, and design the BMW Alpina B6 is the better option.

Alpina B6 vs Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG

The Mercedes S63 AMG is the epitome in luxury performance segment. The newest generation S63 AMG looks fantastic. With unmatched interior quality and design, the S63 beats the BMW Alpina B6. The S63 looks fresh and defines luxury in this segment.

The S63 is also more powerful and has better performance figures than the Alpina B6. Hence, making the Mercedes-Benz S63 is a better choice than the Alpina B6.

2018 BMW ALPINA B6 Final Verdict

The BMW Alpina B6 Gran Coupe is undoubtedly a great car. With Alpina enhancements on the interior and exterior makes the car more exclusive. Usage of fine materials like ceramic and wood gives luxury a new meaning. It is powerful and fun to do drive car with the xDrive configuration.

But, if you are looking for the best performance luxury sedan and exclusivity doesn't matter you much, the Audi RS7 Performance and the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG is worth the consideration. But, if you are looking for a one of kind car the BMW Alpina B6 is the car to have.
