Detailed Review

The top of the pile in the 7 series range, the Alpina B7 does boast of impeccable engine characteristics and a top speed of 206 mph. The all-new Alpina B7 is back in town and commands a much higher respect than before. The luxurious capacity withstanding, all these shows that this car is here to stay and compete with the likes of the Audi S8 and the Mercedes Benz AMG C 63.

However, with a price of around $137,000, the BMW is mighty expensive than the Audi. And although it is cheaper than the Mercedes Benz, the C63 does have a much bigger engine to boast that price tag.

Powered with a 4.4 Liter 8 cylinders Twin power Turbocharged engine, it generates a staggering 600 hp of power at 5750 rpm and 590 lb-ft of torque at just 590 rpm, figures which easily pips its rivals, though the gap is ever so slight.

2017 BMW ALPINA B7 Engine

9.3/10

Even though the B7 remains very much an upper-luxury sedan, it delivers a noticeably more sporty driving experience than does the 750i. And that’s true even if you don't exceed legal limits. The Alpina’s exhaust has a far more pronounced growl than the 750i’s. -caranddriver

The 2017 BMW Alpina B7 is powered by a 4.4 liter 8 cylinder TwinPower Turbo Engine which produces 600 hp at 5750rpm and 590 lb-ft at 590rpm, which provides all wheel drive with 8 speed manual transmission as standard.

The twin turbo engine has been specially designed to improve the fuel efficiency, and one must say that it does the needful pretty well.

Torque 590 lb.-ft. @ 590rpm 517 lb.-ft. @ 1750rpm 664 lb.-ft. @ 2750

The Audi S8 has the smallest engine capacity amongst its peers. At 4.0 liters, it is way behind the rest. On the other hand ,the Mercedes Benz has a massive 5.5 liter engine. What' s more astonishing is the fact that the power outputs remain quite similar despite this huge bandwidth.

Acceleration

The M4 has an all-wheel drive that gives ride comfort and quality.

The Alpina B7 depite having a large engine has to play catch-up here, reaching the speed of 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and covering a quarter mile in 11.9 seconds.

We have to say that the BMW, Audi and the Mercedes Benz are all pretty much similar in terms of covering the first 60 mph, with just a 0.3 second difference separating them.

In terms of quarter mile, the difference isn' t stark either with similar figure here too.

Handling and Steering

If there is one parameter where the BMW scores over its rivals, it is the drive quality, and the Alpina B7 didn' t disappoint. The new suspension is pure magic, even on bad roads.

As it being an all-wheel drive, the seasoned BMW tires give a magnificent grip and are very agile around the corners giving an extra dose of confidence to the driver .

Braking

The 2017 BMW Alpina B7 has the brakes which matches its acceleration. It does well with the Antilock brake system, and also has brake assist.

The BMW takes around 151 feet to stop from 70 mph, again figures which are quite similar amongst the three heavyweights.

2017 BMW ALPINA B7 Fuel Economy

7.0/10

The twin turbo engine does what was expected from it. With a city mpg of 16 mpg and that of 25 on the highway, this BMW is definitely, the best in class.

mpg (city) 16 14 15
mpg (highway) 25 24 23

One has to say that this comparison is so close in every regard that a difference of just 2 mpg among the BMW and that of the Audi and the Mercedes seems large enough to highlight.

2017 BMW ALPINA B7 Interior

10/10

The cabin of the Alpina B7 features tasteful, thoughtful enhancements to add more appeal to the already luxurious 7 Series. -kbb

While the previous M4 had decent interior design, the new M4 has one of the best cabins in this range. The classic BMW analog and gauges gives it a premium feel. And with a touch screen infotainment system, it makes the cabin experience, one with the highest quality.

Seating and Comfort

The 2017 BMW M4 is a two row cruiser which accommodates 5 people. It provides heated and cooled seating as well. The passenger rear seats are also electrically powered.

Cargo Volume

The 2017 BMW Alpina B7 has a spacious trunk. Easily the best in this regard. There is no load lip to lift up the baggages. The storage spaces are excellent with a 12V socket as well. The rear seats are foldable leading to extra room.

The Mercedes Benz is a close second, while the Audi is again a little too far behind at third.

2017 BMW ALPINA B7 Exterior

Dimension and Weight

The BMW always looks sleek and stylish, and this one is the same as well. It looks beautiful from the inside as well as from the outside. The trademark nose remains, with one less grille now on the front panel. The tall designing remains the same which leads to loads of space on the inside.

Track width (in) F/R 63.7 / 64.8 64.3 / 63.9 64.6 / 64.7

Again, the dimensions of all the three are pretty much same with the Mercedes Benz being just a little ahead. It is also the heaviest, while the Bmw is a close second in this regard.

The ground clearance too follows a similar script with the Audi lagging behind at third, while the BMW and the Mercedes Benz a close 1-2.

Some of the exterior features include:

  • Extended sunroof
  • Fixed glass rear sunroof
  • Manual sunshades for rear side windows
  • One-touch power sunroof
  • Power glass sunroof
  • Power rear sunshade
  • Rear defogger
  • Variable intermittent rain sensing wipers
  • Rear spoiler

IIHS and NHTSA do NOT rate BMW Alpina B7.

2017 BMW ALPINA B7 Competition

BMW Alpina B7 vs Audi S8 Plus

The BMW has far more advantages than the Audi. It obviously has a bigger engine which gives much more power to it. The dimensions and weight are much better too. The fuel economy is slightly on the higher side as well.

The comfort on offer on the inside has to be at par in both the heavyweights. What does go in Audi' s favor has to be its price tag. Despite being cheaper, it doesn' t lag too far off in any regard what so ever. Thus there is no definite winner here.

BMW Alpina B7 vs Mercedes Benz AMG C 63

The good thing in this comparison is the fact how closely both these cars match with each other. The Mercedes Benz does have a bigger engine but the BMW manages to catch hold of them in the power generation. The fuel economy is where the BMW wins, while the Mercedes has a better dimension and ground clearance. To counter that, the BMW has a better ride quality and trunk capacity too.

Thus for me, the much lower priced BMW Alpina B7 is the car to go for in this comparison, just on the mere price difference, as the features and qualities are at par.

2017 BMW ALPINA B7 Final Verdict

The BMW Alpina B7 may not be too cheap and has a decent engine with a generous power generation. However, it is nothing short of a true BMW experience. It gives the sporty feel, is luxurious from the inside and has a peppy drive quality to it.

It has got everything, right from the sleek styling and comfy interiors to a peppy and responsive engine. The driving is of another level altogether. The price tag too, is definitely better than the Mercedes Benz and it rightly so pips it in this regard.

However, the real comparison has to be with the Audi S8 plus, which despite being lowly priced, has features and engine output in equal proportions. Thus the decision remains a tricky as to which one to choose between the two, and I' ll leave that to you.
