We Recommend

The 2017 BMW M2 Coupe is a two-door, four-passenger car which is the best version of itself and it wouldn' t be incorrect to claim it to be better than other Coupes out there.

Engine

9.0/10

"Performance cars typically force drivers to sacrifice comfort and everyday drivability in the name of handling and engagement. The 2017 BMW M2 is no different. The suspension is on the stiff side, and road noise is ever-present, especially on coarse asphalt"- Edmunds

Engine And Transmission

The power for the 2017 BMW M2 Coupe is derived from a 3-liter turbocharged inline-6 engine with some modifications including gray cast-iron liners and pistons from the other M series cars. The engine oil system has been redesigned with added DCT M transmission oil cooler. The engine has a horsepower output of 365 at 6,500 rpm and torque of 343 pound-feet at 1,400 to 5,560 rpm. There is an option of raising the torque to 369 pound-feet between 1,450 to 4,750 rpm with the overboost function.

The power from the engine is taken to the rear wheels through the standard 6-speed manual transmission. There is an optional 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission available too. The DCT M transmission of the 2017 BMW M2 Coupe carries out a seamless and smooth shifting and it represents as a highly responsive component of the powertrain. The driven can shift to a manual transmission controlled by two shift paddles in the steering wheel. The clutch coordination in the manual gearbox is excellent that comes with a rev-matching feature.

The 2017 BMW M2 Coupe is a clear winner in terms of power and performance in comparison to its competitors and does justice to its 2nd highest price tag in the group. The costliest Jaguar F-type Coupe comes after the BMW. It can be fairly concluded that for the last two cars, power is directly proportional to the price, which is clearly evident in the case of the Porsche 718 Cayman and Audi TTS which have a similar 2 liter turbocharged 4 cylinder engines.

Acceleration

The manual 6 speed and the automatic 7-speed dual clutch transmission of the 2017 BMW M2 Coupe have fairly the same acceleration of 0 to 60 mph in 4.2, with the former being a millisecond faster than the latter. The push-button start instantly ignites the engine up and running and it comes with three drive modes - Comfort, Sport, and Sport+. The general recorded top speed is 155 mph and it increases to 168 mph with the new M Drivers package. The maximum rpm for the 2017 BMW M2 Coupe is 7,000 and it sounds pretty muscular because of its exhaust-flap system. The Sport and Sport+ modes have a rocker switch which quickens the throttle response for maximum acceleration.

Emission (Tons/yr of CO2 Emissions @ 15K mi/year) 7.1 7.3 9.3 7.0

With the highest emissions among the four, the Jaguar F-type Coupe copes up with a whopping acceleration of 0 to 60 mph in a mere 3.3 seconds and doesn' t fail to maintain it over the quarter-mile as well, covering it in just 11.6 seconds. The 2017 BMW M2 Coupe comes next in the race of initial acceleration and somehow falls behind by 8 milliseconds from the Porsche 718 Cayman which has a slower initial acceleration than the BMW. Audi TTS is the slowest among the lot and has the lowest emission rate as well.

Ride And Handling

The 2017 BMW M2 Coupe is an absolute favorite driver's car. The 19 inch Michelin Pilot Super Sport Tires hold the car to the ground providing a confident and unmatched handling. The BWM has impressive reflexive responses due to use of the conventional passive shock absorbing dampers tuned in an old-fashioned way. The effectiveness of the electrically powered steering increases at higher speed and it replaced the company' s generic hydraulic steering system.

Braking

The 2017 BMW M2 Coupe has more a powerful braking system than most of the M series cars. The strapping binders and big rotors have excellent feedback in the brake pedal, halting the car from 60 to 0 mph in 108 feet.

60-0 MPH (ft.) 108 99.8 116.0 103.0

With comparatively smaller front and rear brake discs, the Porsche 718 Cayman is fastest in stopping the car. The weight does play an important role and as the weight increases, so does the distance covered to stop. The Audi, the BMW and the Jaguar have stoppage distance in increasing order corresponding to their curb weight. The 2017 BMW M2 Coupe has the biggest brakes among the group.

Fuel Economy

7.1/10

The standard automatic start and stop technology of the 2017 BMW M2 Coupe helps significantly in keeping the fuel consumption at check. Both the manual and automatic transmissions shared an equal fuel economy of 26 mpg in the highways. However, in cities, the automatic transmission offers 2 mpg better fuel efficiency than the manual. As for the combined, the manual transmission gives 21 mpg and the automatic gives 22 mpg respectively.

MPG (Highway) 26 28 24 27
MPG (Combined) 21 24 19 25

Beating the 2017 BMW M2 Coupe again, the Porsche has a better fuel economy in cities, highways and combined. Up next, the Audi has a pretty impressive economy rate in cities and highways and surpasses the Porsche in the combined fuel economy. Following the 2017 BMW M2 Coupe sitting at 3rd, the Jaguar has the least efficient fuel economy among the four.

Interior

8.5/10

"Like the standard 2 Series coupe, the 2017 BMW M2 has 4-passenger seating, with the rear seats best used for very small people or as extra storage space"- KBB

Seat And Comfort

The 2017 BMW M2 Coupe is preferable for two passengers; however, 4 passengers can easily be accommodated. The legroom for the rear passengers can be increased by adjusting the front seats.

Rear (Head/Shoulder/Leg)(In.) 36.5/53.4/33 N/A N/A 33.8/47.9/28.9

Similar to the 2017 BMW M2 Coupe, the Audi TTS has a capacity of 4 passengers while the Porsche and Jaguar are limited to a passenger capacity of 2. The BMW has the most passenger volume in cubic feet compared to its rivals and also the largest headroom for the front passengers while Jaguar tops the front passenger legroom. In competition with the Audi, the 2017 BMW M2 Coupe has much larger rear passenger headroom and legroom.

Cargo Capacity

For a four-passenger travel, the 2017 BMW M2 Coupe provided a fair cargo space. In case the rear passenger seats are folded, the cargo space gets extended by a considerable amount.

Volume (ft cube) 13.8 9.7 NA 12.0

As it is pretty clear from the statistics, the 2017 BMW M2 Coupe leads the race of cargo and storage followed right behind by the Audi TTS. The Porsche is seen to suffer due to the lack of enough luggage space among the four.

Exterior

9.0/10

"This is a tough-looking little car. And only the thick will confuse it for a standard 2 Series. Although the two share the same wheelbase, the M2 is wider, slightly longer and it is meaner-looking with unique front and rear fascias that express this coupe's extra muscle"- KBB

Exterior Dimensions

The 2017 BMW M2 Coupe is a high-performing car with sporty exteriors and an example of aerodynamic brilliance.

The Jaguar F-type is the heaviest among the lot, shorter in length than the BMW by negligible numbers, has a considerable width and wheelbase, lacks a little behind height and has the least ground clearance. The Audi is the shortest in length and width among the four, boasts the high ground clearance value and decent wheelbase. The Porsche has maintains a balanced position in the table, more or less. Competition

Porsche 718 Cayman Vs BMW M2 Coupe

The award-winning 2017 Porsche 718 Cayman is a fierce driving experience. The Cayman comes with two turbo four engine options - a 2 liter 300 horsepower for the base and a 2.5 liter 350 horsepower for the S model. The engine is complemented by the standard 6-speed manual transmission; it has an alternative 7-speed automatic transmission that is optional. It is, however, less powerful than the 2017 BMW M2 Coupe and has almost similar acceleration. It has a much better braking system than the BMW though.

Jaguar F Type Coupe Vs BMW M2 Coupe

The 2017 Jaguar F-Type Coupe is an absolute stunner with its long hood and wide rear. It comes with two engine options as well - a 2 liter turbocharged inline four engine and a 3-liter supercharged V-6 engine. The auto-dimming automatic transmission is standard and also has an optional 6-speed manual transmission. Another trait of the Jaguar is that it can be altered between rear wheel drive and all-wheel drive, fairly supported by its firm suspension. The Jaguar has a fascinating and much better acceleration than the 2017 BMW M2 Coupe although it suffers in terms of its braking units and fuel efficiency.

Audi TTS Vs BMW M2 Coupe

The all new super stylish 2017 Audi TTS doesn' t fail to leave its mark on the minds of fast car lovers. The 2-liter turbo 4 engine of the Audi is well balanced with its 6-speed dual clutch automatic transmissions and Quattro all-wheel-drive system. Its well-tuned suspensions and performance blended with style make it a tough competition altogether. The Audi may suffer in power and acceleration in comparison to the 2017 BMW M2 Coupe but it has impressive fuel efficiency for a sports car. It does well then the BMW in terms of braking as well.

Final Verdict

The 2017 BMW M2 Coupe is a very compelling luxury sports car in a very affordable price. Being one of the best cars BMW has ever produced; it would be a very irresistible choice for a sports car lover to turn away from this perfect combination of modern beauty and beastly performance.
