A luxurious subcompact coupe with enormous propulsion, the fun-size BMW 2-series is an entry-level model from the brand. The car is sold under the 230i and M240i names and is available with either rear- or all-wheel drive, with radically differing power outputs. A 382-hp turbocharged inline-6 engine shared with the Toyota Supra is standard equipment on the BMW M240i but sadly, there is no manual transmission available. Nonetheless, the most recent redesign of BMW's smallest car has produced a deceptively rapid ride with good braking and a chassis that enjoys twisties. Despite its increased size, the back seat area is now less spacious than before. The 2023 2 Series' interior is centered on the driver, as you would expect from a true BMW sports vehicle. All passengers should be held in position during agile driving maneuvers thanks to the nicely padded seats. However, there isn't quite as much room in the second row. You might be able to persuade adult friends that there is space for brief trips across town, but it will take considerable persuasion.

The 2-series' most crucial feature is that it rewards aggressive driving at an affordable price. The Gran Coupe, a more accommodating four-door with a 2-series badge is available, but we haven't been too impressed with it because it's based on an entirely separate front-drive chassis. There are just modest changes for the 2023 model year because the BMW 2-series underwent a complete redesign last year. In addition to dropping the Satin Aluminum exterior and Black High Gloss interior trim choices from its build sheet, BMW now comes standard with a new, curved instrument cluster display. BMW is up against strong contenders like the Audi S3, the Mercedes AMG CLA 35, and the Cadillac CT4-V, which are all aggressively priced for what they offer.


Features

The BMW M240i is a single trim variant of the 2-series but that does not mean the buyers have no choices as BMW offers the M240i either in RWD or the xDrive variant, which is the AWD system developed by BMW. The M240i will ride on 19-inch wheels by default and also carry features like a rear spoiler, sunroof, and unique front and rear bumpers as standard along with additional packages to turn the notch up a little in terms of luxury. Adaptive headlights, a high-end Harman Kardon audio system, a wireless charging pad, and a navigation system are a few examples of optional extras. A universal garage door opener system and a steering wheel heating feature are both included in the Premium Package.

Despite having a limited choice, we believe that the additional $2,000 for the xDrive variant over the RWD car is totally worth it. With the price barely touching the $50K mark, the M240i xDrive carries great value for the tons of features and power that it carries.

Release Date

BMW began production for the 2023 M240i in July 2022 and the prospective buyers will get their hands on the car during the Q3 or Q4 of 2022.

Engine and Performance

A 382-hp 3L turbocharged inline-6 powers the M240i. Both a rear-wheel drive and an all-wheel drive system are available for this coupe. There is only one available transmission, which is an 8-speed automatic that works flawlessly. The M240i comes standard with 19-inch wheels wrapped with performance tires, a sporty suspension, performance brakes, variable-ratio steering, and an electronically controlled rear differential. When fitted with the AWD system, this compact coupe accelerates quickly off the mark, reaching 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds. Both its smooth ride and handling are outstanding, but like many of the most recent Beemers, we would want it to have more steering feedback. The car also no more holds a manual transmission, leaving many enthusiasts disappointed but if going quicker is all you need, the automatic gearbox will help you satisfy your desire.

The BMW holds the biggest engine and hence, pumps out more power but that does not mean the rivals are slower performers in comparison. The BMW manages to be the quickest to 60 but Audi takes the win in a quarter-mile drag. However, picking the AWD M240i will put you back in the lead. The M240i outperforms the Mercedes 5 in terms of performance, despite wearing the AMG badge that holds a lot of respect and reputation. The Cadillac is a true American-bred performance car but is not as refined and quick as the BMW despite having a much higher torque figure.

2023 BMW M240i Ride and Handling

Compared to a few larger BMWs from the M lineup, the steering feel on the M240i is significantly better, with a much more natural feel comparable to classic BMWs. When you turn this Beemer sharply, you get that sporty feeling that makes you remember why you've wanted a car with the blue and white roundel on its nose. Whether you're driving in cold, rainy weather or in hot, dry weather, there is an ample amount of traction from the Michelin’s Pilot Sport 4 S all-season tires on the xDrive. The M240i can send all of the drive to the rear wheels, in contrast to the majority of AWD systems that distribute power equally between the front and rear axles. Drivers can feel what the front tires were doing when tipping into a corner thanks to the front axle being much more communicative and responsive as a result. The car receives an electronically controlled locking differential that can change how much torque is distributed between the two back wheels in order to handle the torque at the rear axle. It can also lock both wheels to spin together to boost forward traction when it detects a loss of grip. In order to assist the car in turning through a corner, it could apply additional torque to the outside wheel.

The travel is quite substantial and sturdy, and the pedal feel is fairly decent. There is also no apparent grabbiness. The pedal engagement is strong when cold, and after 20 miles of winding roads intermixed with hard braking zones, there wasn’t any fade or squishiness, giving the impression that BMW filled the M240i from the factory with high-quality, track-centric brake fluid. Behind its 19-inch wheels, the M240i xDrive has standard M Sport Brakes that are larger than the RWD variant, which feature 4-piston front and 2-piston rear calipers.

The Audi with a smaller set of brakes manages to stop well ahead of the BMW but pick the xDrive that comes standard with M Performance brakes and you’ll see the Audi stop ahead of you. Though the Mercedes hasn’t been tested, it carries a large enough brake and weighs much lesser than the BMW, indicating it may perform well. The Cadillac just like the Beemer is on the heavier side but unlike the M240i, the CT4-V has a smaller set of brakes and this could either affect the braking distance of the car or may lead to the brakes heating up much quicker when compared to its rivals, resulting in a faded braking power.

Fuel Economy

An advantage that smaller sports-oriented vehicles such as the BMW M240i hold are that their tiny engines pack enough power to have fun while maintaining a good enough fuel economy. This gives the owners the confidence to take the car out of concrete jungles and cruise on longer routes. The M240i is rated to push out 23 mpg in the city and 32 mpg while on the highway and those picking the xDrive model need not worry, as the figures remain the same. The 13.7-gallon fuel tank helps the coupe cover an impressive distance for a car wearing the M badge.

As far as saving cash is concerned, the BMW is the choice to go as it proved to have better gas mileage than its rivals, especially on the highway. The M240i despite being the most powerful and quickest has managed to pump out figures that can keep your bank accounts happy. However, Driving the BMW over a longer distance might want you to take more frequent fuel breaks due to its smaller gas tank. The Cadillac holds the largest tank, closely followed by Audi, allowing both the cars to cover more miles on a single tank of fuel. The Mercedes falls behind with a similar gas tank as the BMW and lower individual figures.

Interior

With the redesign that the 2-Series lineup received last year that increased the length of the car, you may anticipate that some of the extra room has been used to extend the passenger area, but you'd be wrong. The rear legroom has decreased by 0.8 inches. Due to a little cut-down in total height, headroom and shoulder room both decreased by 1.7-inches and 1.5-inches, respectively. Even the trunk has lost 3.8 cu-ft of capacity. The 2 Series follows what its bigger cousins have been doing by removing a lot of the physical buttons and it will now carry toggles for audio controls while the rest is touch-based. In terms of ergonomics, the 2 Series is almost a driver's car. The steering wheel doesn't offer nearly enough downward tilt to accommodate the lower seating position, despite the fact that you can lower the seat all the way in the car to feel closer to the tarmac. In general, visibility is good for a two-door coupe. It's wonderful to gaze over the relatively long hood, and looking back isn't going to be too difficult either. The Tacora Red and Oyster White leather selections are our favorites. Canberra Beige and Cognac can provide some flare to a plain black interior if you like the Sensatec, which is offered as standard.

Things aren’t as bad for the BMW in terms of the front passenger room but move to the rear and you could get claustrophobic when compared to what the rivals offer. The second row on the M240i is practically suitable for kids but the car holds itself in place by offering a trunk that is the largest in its class. Since all these cars are focused on the entry-level audience, the interiors aren’t very flashy to keep the cost down but the same cannot be said about the Audi as it has a cockpit resembling elements inspired by fighter jets. The Mercedes has a more modern-looking interior with a lot more touch-based controls which isn’t necessarily a good thing as it lacks the tactile feel that is offered by a physical button. The Cadillac seems to have a slightly dated interior but it is undoubtedly the easiest cabin to adapt to as the controls are well laid out with zero clutter.

How intuitive is the 2023 BMW M240i infotainment system?

BMW introduced the current 2 Series Coupe last summer, so a refresh is still at least two years away. However, the Munich manufacturer has already made significant changes to the coupe, introducing its Curved Display and iDrive 8 as standard equipment on vehicles made starting in July of this year. The 10.25-inch infotainment display grows to 14.9 inches, but the 12.3-inch digital cluster retains the same size as it is currently. The instrument panel no longer creates a hood over the gauge cluster because the Curved Display is a single piece and instead, the entire panel sticks up off the dash. The touchscreen now houses the line of climate controls that were formerly located under the center vents. The system features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in addition to outstanding resolution, voice, and gesture controls. The iDrive system is among the best infotainment systems now available in this market, in our opinion.

Exterior

The new front fascia on BMW's most recent 3 and 4-series lines has drawn criticism, for better or worse. Everyone ended up giving the ugly grille obscene nicknames. Despite this, the M240i retains the more common "kidney" grilles found on earlier versions. The M240i uses the same active cooling flaps as the M440i, although having a smaller and perhaps better-looking front grille. To maintain the engine at the ideal temperature, these can open and close in 10 phases. The car also has horizontal ducts that can be adjusted to supply the brakes with fresh air as needed. The M240i has almost perfect proportions when viewed from the side thanks to its short rear deck, modest lip spoiler, and 19-inch wheels. The 2er's lengthy schnozz, which has an excessive amount of front overhang, is the sole thing preventing it from obtaining the "golden ratio”. Even more difficult to look at is the front. T the headlights are undoubtedly crisp and the kidneys are perfect in size, but the lower bumper's ornamentation is completely out of place. The triangular vents on each corner of the otherwise slick, harmonious design pierce through it like a hot knife. The central vent, which is located beneath those kidneys, has a similar problem and is encircled with crinkled sheet metal that slopes upward toward the hood line without having a clear finish.

 Despite the BMW having a mixed opinion about its design, the Audi follows a more appealing and widely acceptable design language. Both the BMW and Audi stay on the shorter side in terms of the overall length but despite it affecting the internal space, the compact size makes these vehicles more fun to drive. The Cadillac happens to be the longest vehicle here and also has a taller stance, giving it a more traditional sedan look than the sporty appeal that its rivals carry. In terms of ground clearance, the BMW offers 5.1-inches of space, which is much better when compared to what is offered by the Mercedes.

Safety

Every 2-series is equipped with front and rear parking sensors in addition to a variety of standard driver aid features like blind-spot monitoring. A self-parking assist option is also available, which will steer it into or out of parallel or perpendicular spaces automatically. The 2023 model hasn’t yet been rated for crash tests but considering the performance of the previous generation and what other models have achieved, it is safe to assume that the M240i is a safe car.

The Audi S3 is one of the main rivals of the BMW M240i. Despite having a lower power and torque output than the M240i, the car impresses with its acceleration times. With usable back seats and a larger gas tank than the M240i, the S3 outperforms the latter in terms of practicality as well. However, when compared to the M240i, the car lacks headroom, particularly for the driver and front passenger.

Although the Mercedes-Benz AMG-tuned CLA 35 is a fantastic model from the competitive German manufacturer, it only slightly outperforms the M240i. The M240i surpasses the AMG CLA 35 in terms of performance, while the Merc outperforms Beemer with its more advanced interior features and large, ultra-modern cabin.

The M240i is met with the Cadillac CT4-V, the American brand's response to the German-dominated segment. It costs a little less and provides about the same levels of performance and power as the M240i. The CT4-V is a stylish car on the inside as well, with a flawless fusion of classic and contemporary elements in the interior decor. Unfortunately, it performs poorly in terms of fuel efficiency when compared to the M240i and is only saved by the enormous 16.6-gallon gas tank.

Final Verdict

The BMW M240i is a very attractive and capable option in the market. It delivers exhilarating performance, a luxurious interior, a gorgeous list of features, and the usefulness of a compact car with a large trunk. Although the back seats may not be suitable for carrying adults, they can serve as a space for kids and cargo. BMW is the only option that comes in a 2-door layout and while that might look cool on the outside, it makes the car less practical than its rivals. The M240i also is the more driver-focused vehicle in the segment, making it a fun car to be behind the wheel of when compared to a few of its rivals.
