BMW has blessed the world with some of the most iconic and influential sedans of all time. The M5 lineup has achieved legendary status with cars like E28 M5, E39 M5, and E34 M5. However, this also puts BMW in a position where everyone's a critic and has to face immense pressure to carry forward the legacy successfully. The current generation, the F90 M5 has been a mixed bag when it comes to public reception.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Overall Rating

The current generation of M5 is the 6th one since its inception in the early 80s. This generation was launched in 2017 and it remains largely unchanged. It did receive a minor facelift which consisted of sleeker headlights and taillights with slightly redesigned front fascia and rear bumpers. The changes continued to the inside with a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and cloud-based navigation features.

The new M5 will go up against its old rivals the 2022 Mercedes E63 S sedan and the 2022 Audi RS 7. M5 buyers also might consider something like a 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing as it falls in the same price bracket and delivers crazy performance.

2022 BMW M5 Features

The BMW M5 carries forward without any changes, which means the trim line is the same. Although there is only one trim available this year as well, the price of the trim has gone up slightly from last year.

Key Features

Adaptive AWD

Proximity entry system

Active charcoal filtration

16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system

Pre-Collision Warning System

Leather Upholstery

We Recommend

With only one trim on offer, there isn't much to recommend here. However, we do recommend going for the Executive Package and upgrading to the higher engine option. This gives you luxury features such as heated and ventilated seats, parking assists, 4 zone climate control and many more features, along with giving you better performance and improved driving dynamics.

Pricing for the 2022 M5 will likely wander around the 104 grand mark. The next in line M5 competition will likely be around 114 grand. Stay tuned for official pricing. BMW did reveal the price for the bonkers M5 CS, which is priced at $143,995.

Release Date

The 2022 BMW M5 and M5 Competition will likely hit the dealerships in the second half of 2021, which is around November. Official release dates are yet to be revealed. Stay tuned for the latest updates. However, the M5 CS has begun production in March 2021 and will likely hit the dealerships in a few weeks.

2022 BMW M5 Engine and Performance

The flagship BMW M-car gets the brand's flagship 4.4 L Twin-Turbocharged V8 engine. In the base M5, it produces 600 hp. With the M5 Competition this number bumps up to 617 and with the M5 CS, it rises even further at 627 hp. Gone are the days of a manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive. All-new M5's come standard with a high-tech All-Wheel Drive system. Purists can rejoice because this system can send 100% of the power to the rear wheels. The 8-speed automatic transmission is as good as it gets. It is not a dual-clutch, instead, it's a torque converter system. BMW claims that it is significantly more durable with not much difference in shift times. In the real world, it doesn't really matter, the M5 is pure unadulterated performance.

2022 BMW M5 Sedan engine bay

The engine is so potent that even the base trim will propel to 60 MPH from a dead stop in around 3.3 seconds. The CS will likely do it two-tenths of a second faster. The M5 comfortably will tear up drag strips and autobahns. However, all of this performance comes at a price and that is stiffer than the usual suspension setup. The steering is also razor-sharp and this large sedan handles like a sports car through the twisties.

In terms of raw performance, the Bimmer and the Merc are neck and neck when it comes to horsepower. The E63S produces way more torque than the M5. However, in real-life conditions, you probably won't feel the difference. The BMW easily beats Audi which is much more expensive than the M5. However, when it comes to the 2022 CT5-V Blackwing, which offers crazier numbers for 20 grand less, the BMW does not stand a chance.

2022 BMW M5 Fuel Economy

Fuel economy is not a priority on these machines. However, they do need to comply with the regulations. Thus, the BMW M5 has achieved an EPA rating of 15 mpg in city driving and 21 mpg on highway cruising. Combined you can expect up to 17 mpg. This paired with the large 20.1-gallon fuel tank and your super-sedan could have a range of around 350 miles.

The larger engine does not do any favor in terms of fuel economy to all of these vehicles, But the Mercedes and Audi edge out ahead of the M5 with 18 and 19 mpg on the clock respectively. Mercedes also gets a larger fuel tank which helps boost overall range. The CT5-V Blackwing is brand new for the 2022 model year and therefore remains to be tested by the EPA. Thus, the BMW M5 is left with the shortest overall range in this segment.

2022 BMW M5 Interior

The M5 might perform like a fully-fledged supercar, but at the end of the day, it is a comfortable and luxurious sedan. It has an elegant leather interior with plush seating that is next only to the flagship 7 series. The interior and dashboard layout has largely stayed the same except for the addition of a 12.3-inch touch screen last year. You won't find a single ounce of cheap plastics or low-quality materials in this cabin. The M5 offers a plethora of luxurious features like customizable ambient interior lighting, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, power-adjustable steering column, ventilated front seats with massage functionality, heated rear seats, and four-zone automatic climate control

The M5's dashboard is dominated by the 12.3-inch touchscreen that sits on top. It runs the BMW's latest iDrive infotainment system that is super smooth and one of the best in the business. This system includes nifty features like Wi-Fi Hotspot, Voice Recognition, Gesture Control, and many more to access it. All models come with a 16-speaker 600 watt Harman Kardon audio system as well as a wireless charger. Those who want to indulge more can opt for the rear-seat entertainment system and 16 speakers 1400 watt Bowers and Wilkins sound system.

2022 BMW M5 Sedan front seats

The interior room is nothing short of excellent in the M5. There is ample headroom across both rows of seating. You can easily cram in five people due to the large legroom offered in the rear seats. However, in the CS model, you get race-inspired bucket seats instead of the regular M5 rear bench. This reduces the capacity to four. Cargo capacity is also decent at 14 cubic feet which is more than enough for all your vacation luggage.

No other super sedan in this segment comes close to the BMW when it comes to offering headroom in both front and rear. The Mercedes E63 S does beat the M5 in terms of shoulder room in the rear which might make it feel a bit airy. However, the M5 offers plenty of space and no one will find this luxurious interior as cramped.

2022 BMW M5 Exterior

The exterior of this F90 generation of the BMW M5 has long been a point of discussion. Some people love it and some people despise it. It is definitely handsome, but some might argue that it lacks drama which other brands do offer. With the 2021 mild refresh, the M5 now looks a tad bit better than before with the sleeker headlights and redesigned front and rear ends. The infamous kidney grille is still manageable on this car and does not look out of place. The muscular lines and hood creases make it feel more muscly than its rivals. In the end, it all boils down to the customer's preference, do you think the M5 looks better than its rivals?

Both the Mercedes AMG E63 S and the Audi RS 7 definitely feel more unique and tend to stand out because of their more performance-oriented aesthetic. This makes the M5 less appealing to customers who want to flash their new super-sedan and more appealing to those who want to stay discreet.

2022 BMW M5 Safety

The M5 uses the same modular Cluster Architecture (CLAR) chassis as the regular 5 series, except that the chassis is tuned by M-Sport Division. They have added better suspension, added stiffness, and a whole lot of performance upgrades. Bottom line, the M5 chassis, and underpinnings are as good as they can get and should be no problem over the long run.

Apart from the Federally mandated features, BMW offers active safety features like Forward-Collision Warning, Automated Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning, and Lane Keeping Assist. However, it is surprising that they did not offer their Adaptive Cruise Control system with the 2021 model year. Hopefully, they offer this as standard on the 2022 model year because nowadays cars that are half this price come standard with Adaptive Cruise Control.

The M5 or the BMW 5 Series lineup has not been fully tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for quite some time now. However, it did perform incredibly well at the assessments conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It scored “good” which is their highest rating on all of the different assessments.

2022 BMW M5 vs 2022 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S

The BMW M5 and the Mercedes AMG E 63 S couldn't be more evenly matched. They both deliver eye-melting performance as well as unmatched luxury. However, in some aspects like the infotainment system and the exterior styling, the E 63 S seems to beat the BMW M5. However, the Mercedes does not offer lane departure warning and lane-keeping assist which the BMW does. Both offer similar warranty coverages, but BMW offers three years or 36,000 miles of complimentary scheduled maintenance.

2022 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S

2022 BMW M5 vs 2022 Audi RS 7

The Audi RS 7 definitely looks stunning which helps it stand out more than the BMW M5. However, BMW obliterates the RS7 in terms of performance, Audi does offer an equally luxurious interior but its interior is far more cramped than the BMW. Audi also offers only one year of complimentary scheduled maintenance.

2022 Audi RS 7

2022 BMW M5 vs 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing

The new CT5-V Blackwing is another unholy amalgamation of the supercharged V8 out of the Dodge Hellcat and a lowly car in Dodge-Chryslers umbrella. It offers unreal performance for the money which honestly puts some of these brands to shame. However, the new Cadillac is simply not as comfortable and luxurious as an M5. And it also lacks the pedigree of German brands.

2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing

2022 BMW M5 Final Verdict

The 2022 BMW M5 is an excellent super-sedan that delivers exhilarating performance as well as the comfort levels of a limousine. 2022 model year will likely be a complete carryover, but we would love to see few key changes like the addition of Adaptive Cruise Control as standard. However, if you do fancy a BMW M5, you can look for the 2021 model year car as there won't be any significant changes in the 2022 model year.
