The 2022 BMW M5 is the benchmark in the midsize performance segment. It continues to dominate the segment with no notable changes this year. The 2022 M5 has an MSRP of $103,500 while the M5 Competition starts from $111,100. BMW has also released the lighter, more powerful M5 CS, which we have reviewed separately. A 4.4L twin-turbo V8 powers the M5 that makes 600 hp in the regular M5 and 617 hp in the M5 Competition.

2022 BMW M5

The M5 delivers outstanding performance and has a 0-60 MPH time of 3.2 seconds, which is really cool. Apart from its performance, the M5 also offers a luxurious and comfortable interior. The cabin is not the most tech-oriented but its infotainment system is one of the best in the business. With plenty of safety techs on offer, the M5 also assures a safe ride. The M5 will go up against the Mercedes-AMG E63 S, the Audi RS 7, and the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Overall Rating

The 2022 BMW M5 isn't a subdued sedan. It's an endless thrill ride on four wheels- CarAndDriver

Having received a major redesign last year, BMW didn't feel the need to update the M5 for this year for understandable reasons. However, the main taking point this year is the new M5 CS, the fastest street-legal M5 ever built. Even the regular M5 provides lots of power but with subtle looks. The M5 also fulfills the duties of a luxury sedan and therefore, possesses dual character.

The 2022 M5 can be leased at $1,369 per month for a term of 36 months. You may have to pay a downpayment amount of $7,999 at the time of purchase. There is also a finance option available at an APR rate of 0.9% for a term of 60 months. Owning an M5 can break your bank as it can cost up to $25,000 every year for its maintenance, repair, fuel, depreciation, etc.

2022 BMW M5 Buying Advice

We'd settle for the base trim itself as it offers mind-blowing performance as well as ample comfort features. We do recommend upgrading to the Driver Assistance Professional package for some essential driver aids. This compensates for a breath-taking yet safe driving experience.

2022 BMW M5 Features

The iDrive infotainment interface in the M5 doesn't take much effort to operate the many available features- Edmunds

The BMW M5 carries forward without any changes, which means the line-up is the same. The base M5 is priced at $103,500 while the M5 Competition costs up to $111,100. Add to that a $995 destination charge. People looking for a bit more performance can opt for the all-new M5 CS variant that costs $142,000 that raises the bar for driving enthusiasts.

The M5 is a luxurious car but it is focused on performance. Hence, you get several optional performance gears to amp your driving experience. The M Driver's package includes a one-day high-performance driving class and raises the top speed to 190 MPH. The $3,350 Executive package adds heated rear seats, ventilated and massaging front seats, soft-close doors, and many more.

2022 BMW M5 Engine and Performance

Astonishing acceleration, all-wheel drive allows rear-drive antics, expensively appointed cabin- CarAndDriver

The BMW M5 features the brand's flagship 4.4L twin-turbocharged V8 engine. In the base M5, it produces 600 hp and 553 lb-ft. of torque while the M5 Competition makes 17 horses. The 8-speed automatic transmission is as good as it gets. It is not a dual-clutch, instead, it's a torque converter system. The M5 comes standard with an AWD system but pressing the Drift mode button can send 100% of the power to the rear wheels.

2022 BMW M5 engine bay

The suspension setup is stiffer than a usual BMW because it's an M car. Get ready to feel fidgety on bumpy roads. However, when you set it in Comfort mode, things soften up a little bit. The steering is razor-sharp and this large sedan handles like a sports car through the twisties. That is because the chassis was re-tuned by M-Sport Division. When you take those sharp turns at speed, body roll is well maintained. All in all, the M5 lives up to the driver's car.

2022 BMW M5 driving view

The engine is so potent that even the base trim will propel to 60 MPH from a dead stop in around 3.2 seconds and it can tear up a drag strip in 11 seconds. The M5 Competition, with extra 17 horses, can do it in just 2.8 seconds. The top speed of the M5 can go up to 200 MPH with the M Driver's package. The standard ventilated disc braking can halt this beat from 60 MPH in 97 feet but they can be upgraded with carbon-ceramic brakes for better stopping power.

In terms of raw performance, the Audi RS 7 and the Mercedes-AMG E63 S are neck and neck but the Bimmer is faster in the long run. For those speed freaks, the M5 CS will definitely blow your minds off. The Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing has crazy power outputs for a lesser price tag but it doesn't stand a chance against the M5.

2022 BMW M5 Fuel Economy

The M5 isn't going to win any eco-conscious awards in the USA, but it's at least on par within its segment- Carbuzz

Fuel economy isn't a big priority for customers looking for a car like the BMW M5. However, these cars do need to comply with the regulations. Thus, the M5 has achieved an EPA rating of 15 MPG in city driving and 21 MPG on highway cruising. Combined, you can expect up to 17 MPG, which is pretty decent for a performance sedan.

2022 BMW M5 rear driving view

Despite making 17 horses more, the M5 Competition's fuel ratings are identical to the M5 sedan, which is a good thing. The M5 is fitted with a large 20.1-gallon fuel tank so that the sedan can provide a driving range of 342 miles in mixed proportions. Thanks to its large tank, the M5's mileage is pretty competitive in the segment.

The larger engine does not do any favor in terms of fuel economy to all of these vehicles, But the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S edge out ahead of the M5 with slightly better fuel estimates. It also gets a larger fuel tank which helps boost overall range. The supercharged engine in the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing drinks more juice than its rivals and it's quite obvious.

2022 BMW M5 Interior

Overall, the M5's cabin is very nice, with soft leather surfaces and tasteful metal accents- Cnet

The BMW M5 might perform like a fully-fledged supercar, but at the end of the day, it is a comfortable and luxurious sedan. It has an elegant leather interior with plush seating that is next only to the flagship 7 series. The interior and dashboard layout has largely stayed the same. The M Competition model adds M Color seat belts to stand out from the crowd. The front bucket seats offer good cushioning and bolstering.

2022 BMW M5 dashboard

They can be power-adjusted in 20 ways and come standard with heated functionality. The three-spoke leather steering wheel is also power-adjustable but rather looks straightforward. Even the rear seats are spacious enough and can be upgraded with heated functionality. There is ample passenger space across both rows of seating. You can easily cram in five people due to the large legroom offered in the rear seats.

2022 BMW M5 infotainment system

This Bimmer's dashboard is dominated by dual 12.3-inch displays that sit on top. It runs the BMW's latest iDrive infotainment system that is super smooth and one of the best in the business. This system includes nifty features like wireless Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Wi-Fi hotspot, voice recognition, etc. Using the gesture controls can be tacky but it performs basic functions neatly. The 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound's quality is mesmerizing.

When it comes to cargo capacity, the M5 offers 14 cubes of cargo space. You could store enough luggage for a family of four. The rear seats can be folded in a 40/20/40 split for carrying more items. However, the hatchback-like profile of the Audi RS 7 benefits from class-leading cargo capacity. Some other interior highlights of the M5 are:

  • Power tilt & telescopic multi-function leather steering wheel
  • 20-way power front heated seats
  • Genuine leather upholstery

2022 BMW M5 Exterior

The M5 super-sedan is about as BMW as BMWs get these days (at least, next to purer stuff such as the much smaller M2)- Motortrend

The exteriors of the BMW M5 are definitely handsome, but some might argue that it lacks drama which other brands do offer. It looks so much more aggressive, particularly around the front bumper. It's a much more angular design with lots of black trim. The LED laser lights look really striking and sleek. The infamous kidney grille is still manageable on this car and does not look out of place.

2022 BMW M5

The muscular lines and hood creases make it feel more muscly than its rivals. Coming to the side, there's a fin above the front wheel arch. From the rear end, the M5 has a seriously mean look. The 20-inch wheels keep this sedan 5.2 inches above the ground. The standard sports exhaust system and a super chunky diffuser really sound meatier. Just like the front ones, the LED taillights also boast an attractive look.

The Mercedes-AMG E63 S sits low to the ground which potentially helps to build pace on smooth pavements. The Audi RS 7's wheelbase is comparatively smaller than the M5 but its cabin is spacious. This aids for better handling around the corners. The Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing's overall length measures 194.9 inches, the shortest here. So, you won't find any trouble while manuevring at tight turns. Some other exterior features are:

  • LED adaptive headlights
  • LED adaptive taillights
  • LED fog lamps
  • Puddle lamps
  • Power-folding, heated exterior mirrors
  • Quad exhaust chrome tips
  • Black grille with chrome surround
  • Rear lip spoiler

2022 BMW M5 Safety

The M5's driver safety aids are successful in adding a layer of safety without getting in the way- Edmunds

Both NHTSA and IIHS have not rated the 2022 BMW M5. The M5 uses the same modular Cluster Architecture (CLAR) chassis as the regular 5 series, except that the chassis is tuned by M-Sport Division. Hence, it is acceptable to use 5 Series IIHS ratings. It performed incredibly well in all assessments and received 'Good' ratings.

2022 BMW M5 vs 2022 Mercedes-AMG E63 S

The M5 and the Mercedes-AMG E63 S couldn't be more evenly matched. They both deliver eye-melting performance as well as unmatched luxury. However, in some aspects like the infotainment system and eye-catching interior details, the E63 S seems to beat the M5. It does not offer some driver-assist features which the M5 does. Both offer similar warranty coverages, but BMW also offers complimentary maintenance and slightly better trunk space.

2022 BMW M5 vs 2022 Audi RS 7

The Audi RS 7 definitely looks stunning which helps it stand out but it is way more expensive than the M5. The M5 obliterates the RS7 in terms of performance, and raw power. It does offer an equally luxurious interior but the main highlight is its tech-forward cabin and its class-leading cargo volume. Audi also offers ac complimentary maintenance warranty. That said, choosing either of these sedans comes down to personal preference.

2022 BMW M5 vs 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing

The new Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing is another unholy amalgamation of the supercharged V8 out of the Dodge Hellcat and a lowly car in the Dodge-Chryslers umbrella but from the stable of General Motors. It beats the M5 on paper but in reality, the latter offers unreal performance for the money. Its fuel economy and cargo capacity are very low while its interior is simply not as comfortable and luxurious as an M5. Pick the M5.

2022 BMW M5 Final Verdict

The 2022 BMW M5 is an excellent sedan that delivers exhilarating performance as well as the comfort levels of a limousine. As long as you don't find the urge to go for the fastest ever M5 ever in the form of the M5 CS, it is best that you stick with the regular M5 as it offers all the oomph and grunt that you expect from an M5 but with all the modern bells and whistles.
