2019 BMW M6 Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

CARHP Editorial Updated on: November 13, 2019

German Manufacturer Mercedes-Benz started this era of luxury 4 door coupes with provocatively designed CLS. And that created a whole new segment which has gotten a rather serious business. BMW which was vastly away from all this fun fair finally entered the match with 4-door version of its popular coupe: the 6 series. The M6 Gran Coupe though, is a further step into serious performance business. You can call it luxury sports car of sort.

The BMW M6 Gran Coupe houses a 560 hp twin-turbo V-8 and a peak torque of 500 lb-ft which is a downgrade on the number of cylinders from the last generation which was a fiery V10. What BMW uses is a 'HOT V setup, where the turbos are placed inside the V8 valley which makes the airflow more efficient and pressure more consistent on the turbochargers making it response very quickly.

Starting at $ 1,19,000, M6 Gran Coupe just tips a little lighter on the money front and it locks its competition against CLS 63 S, Panamera Turbo and Audi RS7 which on the performance front, all but very capable machines which seat 4 and can go teary eye fast in no time.

7.6/10

This car likes to play and offers excellent transitional and dynamic behavior.-Car and Driver

Engine and Transmission:

BMW M6 Gran Coupe gets a fiery 560hp twin turbo V-8 under its hood which is ertswhile used for housing engines for comfortable executive sedan. 560 hp twin-turbo V-8 and a peak torque of 500 lb-ft which is a downgrade on the number of cylinders from the last generation which was a fiery V10. This 4.4L twin turbo is monstrous in performance and it is both better to drive and better to look. It is mated to standard 7 speed automatic dual clutch transmission. But Manual can still be taken as an option.

Accelerations:

BMW M6 pulls hard with that 4.4L V8 engine but 4.1 seconds to 60 mph is a little shy on the time it takes when compared to the three cars here. BMW could get a better time. Probably its weight over the M6 coupe makes it take 4.1 seconds.

CLS with 577 bhp is the quickest to reach 60mph with 3.5 seconds. A 4-door coupe weighing 4420 pounds doing a 3.5 second 60 is still a revelation. Following them is Panamera and RS7 at 3.8 and 3.9 seconds.

Ride and Handling:

M6 could have been made a little lighter because it deters M6 from being as dynamically able. Roll and Pitch is quite evident even on well paved roads under hard deceleration or when putting it into corners. It could have been easily made a little better to ride like the Mercedes CLS AMG here.

Braking:

Brakes are impressively kitted on the BMW M6 Gran Coupe they work really well with great feedback and they bite good. For a 4430 pound car, 60 to 0 mph in 108 feet is a “hell yeah!” number. Ceramic brakes on options make matters more serious on the deceleration department.

Feel of BMW M6 Gran Coupe is tight with its stopping power with good feel and preciseness but 60 to 0 mph distance, Audi RS7 beats everyone I.e. 101 ft. The next in the order is M6 Gran Coupe. Then the Panamera with 111 ft. and CLS AMG still with moderately sized brakes and weight as much as the competition is actually the one that takes the most distance to stop.

2019 BMW M6 Fuel Economy

M6 Gran Coupe gives out a below average fuel efficiency. A combined fuel efficiency of 17 MPG and a low of 14 MPG in the city. Considering its an M car, what else can we expect here?

Seating and Comfort

A passenger capacity of 4 adults would’ve been a concern but every competitor has opted for the same model and hence it does not pose an issue. The car feels spacious and beats its match hands down with a large passenger volume of 82 cubic feet which gives more room for movement. BMW can be ordered in various interior options but the basic one is blacked and grey-ed out mostly. And that gives it a very no non-sense sporty look. The seat comfort is plush and materials used are great.

The best around here in terms of passenger volume at 104.3 cubic feet is the CLS 63 AMG. BMW, Audi and Porsche almost lie in the same ballpark of 82 to 85 cubic feet. The front seats of BMW is the spacious of them all though. The most comfortable here. The one problem with Panamera we feel is that centre console that runs to the rear seat making it a little clusterphobic to sit at times.

Cargo Capacity:

In providing a spacious feel however, a compromise was made in the cargo capacity of the BMW M6 Gran Coupe. The capacity of 13 cubic feet is considerably less in front of the Porsche Panamera Turbo and the Audi RS7.

Audi RS7 surprisingly has the most capacity to store here a relatively enormous in some conditions even double! Audi’s Cargo volume is 24.5 cubic feet. While Porsche takes a second place here at 17.4 cubic feet which is decent. But the CLS and M6 at 15.3 and 13 cubic feet respectively is unimpressive.

Infotainment System:

The standard features present in the infotainment system itself give an enjoyable experience that an option for upgrades is hardly ever a need.

“For all the “four-door coupe” nonsense floating around these days, it turns out that the 6-series Gran Coupewas a great idea.” -Car and Driver

Dimensions and weight:

The BMW M6 Gran Coupe is a flamboyant looking car and pulling its lines from BMW M6 two door version stretching it a little bit. It has a cool low slung looking silhouette to it the roof line gently merging into the boot. The Gran coupe takes a lot from the M6 Coupe in the sense how it looks but it beautifully hides the idea of 4 door on the cars design.

Porsche Panamera towers the competition when size is compared. Rest of all almost are comparable in terms of dimension and weight. But we should mention it the M6 looks the most sporty here.

2019 BMW M6 Safety

A powerful car needs to have a safety check for its passengers in order to ensure its final OK! Without a proper safety system, however tough and full of features a car is, it would still not sell itself. The BMW has been known for its safety system precautions and thus comes out on top among top automobile manufacturers.

2019 BMW M6 Competition

Porsche Panamera Turbo:

Porsche Panamera Turbo was the only model with at par ratings and numbers as the BMW M6 Gran Coupe. Even though it performs better in many aspects, the exorbitantly high price of $150,000 leaves it into dusts in front of the BMW M6 Gran Coupe. Rather than investing an extra $30,000 into buying the Porsche Panamera Turbo, it'll be wise to invest in the additional optional features that are offered by the BMW in its model, which only brings it closer to perfection.

2019 Porsche Panamera Turbo

Mercedes-Benz AMG CLS 63 S:

Mercedes-Benz has always been notorious for being comfortable and plush in ride quality and also the interior comfort. And this being an AMG the Turbo Charged V8 is burbly and fiery as it can get. AMG can get you the best of both worlds. It can stay mum when you want it, it can get ferocious at the touch of the pedal. The dual nature of the Mercedes would make you love it.

2019 Mercedes Benz CLS 63 S

Audi RS7

Audi with that legendary Quattro system is arguably the most versatile and dynamic car. But with the kind of tech on offer. The Audi feels a little bland when driven hard. With a lot of body roll, the pitches and dives the RS7 doesn’t inspire driven hard. You should look elsewhere if you want a sportier 4 seater from Audi: The RS5. Audi RS7 otherwise is very well equipped car with loads of features inside. Which will keep you entertained.

2019 BMW M6 Final Verdict

The only chance for someone to opt for a different car maker would be in case of the cargo capacity, which might be a decision maker for a family or someone with travel plans on a frequent basis. But instead the Mercedes-Benz AMG CLS 63 S is a first-class executive car loaded with performance and in our final verdict it wins the top spot to be the best car in our comparison.

BMW makes one of the best driver's car.

Overall, the Mercedes-Benz AMG CLS 63 S is a blast. It's a perfect choice among all cars in its price segment. It's a choice for those expecting a finest quality car. With every feature you can get in the model it provides you a sensational feeling of riding the car of everyone else's dreams.
