2017 BMW M6 Engine

8.9/10

“M6 Gran Coupe might closely resemble other 6 Series BMWs, it definitely sets itself apart as a true M car from behind the wheel with massive thrust from the twin-turbo V8 and a lovely exhaust note to accompany the nearly overwhelming power.”- Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

The M6 Gran Coupe comes with a ‘M’ammoth engine that is a hooligan. The 4.4 liter, turbocharged V8 power plant of the M6 pumps out about 560 horses and delivers 500 lb.-ft. of torque. The power unit is mated to a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission and it transmits power to all the four wheels of the car via a limited slip differential. The level of refinements on the engine are high and all-in-all BMW have done a great job in building this power unit.

The arch rivals of this Beemer, the Audi RS7 and the Porsche Panamera Turbo, both use a similar 4-liter, turbocharged V8 engine but the Audi makes 560 horses while the Porsche makes 550 horses. Both the cars make more torque than the BMW with the Audi delivering 516 lb.-ft. and the Porsche delivering 567 lb.-ft. of torque.

Acceleration

The BMW M6 Gran Coupe is a pocket-rocket. Dab on the throttle and car will shoot itself to 60 MPH from rest in 3.7 seconds. Take the car to the drag strip and it will hit the quarter mile mark in about 12.2 seconds. This is four door car that offers you a sports car like performance and it is pretty much insane.

The M6 however isn’t the fastest car of the lot and loses to its rivals by quite a few milliseconds. The Porsche Panamera has the best 0-60 MPH acceleration timing and does it 3.6 seconds which is 0.1 seconds faster than the BMW. On the other hand, the Audi RS7 happens to be the fastest car on the drag strip. The Audi will hit the quarter mile mark in 11.3 seconds which is 0.9 seconds faster than the M6 Gran Coupe.

Ride and Handling

The BMW M6 Gran Coupe is one of the most technologically advanced car in the market and hence comes with different drive modes to offer you different types of ride and handling quality. The M6 comes with 3 driving modes namely Comfort mode, Sports mode and M Dynamic mode. The M6 is one of the very few cars in the market where you can actually feel significant difference in between the drive modes.

In the comfort mode, the M6 is a nice and comfortable highway cruiser. The steering responds slowly, the throttle responses are soft and the adaptive suspensions absorbs all the bumps and pot holes. You’ll certainly get the best fuel economy figures in this mode as the gears shift automatically in the lower rev range. However, you still have lot of power to make overtaking manoeuvers with ease. The performance characters of the car stay hidden in the comfort mode.

Shift to the sports mode and the car starts warming up itself. The steering feels heavier and more accurate now, the throttle responses become sharper, the exhaust becomes grumpier and the suspensions become stiffer. The sports mode is pretty much a balanced driving mode and offers you spirited driving experience and fuel efficiency.

Now comes the M Dynamic mode. In other words, this is the mode that transforms the M6 into a beast that it already is. The car shows its true color. Powerful, athletic, dynamic and energetic. The steering becomes sharp, the throttle responses become very sharp, the exhaust note becomes louder and the car literally roars as you step on the gas and the suspensions become stiff to offer you effortless high-speed cornering. The M Dynamic mode converts the car into an ultimate track mode.

Braking

Braking abilities of the car only give you the ability to exploit the engine prowess of the car to the fullest. The BMW M6 Gran Coupe rather large sets of brakes just so that you can enjoy the engine of the car to the fullest. Up front, you get 15.7 inches diameter discs while at the rear you get 15.6 inches diameter discs. Slam on the brakes and the BMW will come to a halt at a distance of 102 feet from 60 MPH.

The Audi RS7 beats the BMW in terms of braking stats by a very small margin. The Audi comes to a halt from 60 MPH at distance of 101 feet which is 1 feet less than the BMW. The Porsche Panamera on the other hand takes covers a distance of 111 feet to come to a stop when brakes are slammed at 60 MPH.

2017 BMW M6 Competition

Audi RS7 Prestige.

The Audi RS7 is the rival of the BMW M6 from Ingolstadt. The RS7 uses a smaller 4-liter engine and makes power equal to the M6. Moreover, the Audi outshines the BMW in terms of acceleration timings, braking stats, fuel economy and cargo volume. What’s more is that the Audi RS7 is also $7000 cheaper than the BMW.

Clearly, the Audi is the better car of the two. However, there isn’t much difference between the two and so it would not really make much difference for the BMW. Ultimately it comes to the looks of the cars which again depends on your taste.

Porsche Panamera Turbo.

Porsche Panamera Turbo is yet another sports sedan from Stuttgart that rivals the BMW M6. The Panamera uses a smaller 4-liter engine and is 10 horses deficient than the M6. However, the Panamera has the better acceleration timings, has the better fuel economy ratings, better passenger volume and also has the better luggage storage space.

But the Panamera is $29,000 costlier than M6 which is a big turn off. If you only want the snob of a Porsche and are spending thirty grand more isn’t a big question for you, then you should certainly go for the Porsche. Otherwise, the BMW is the more sensible car of the two.

2017 BMW M6 Final Verdict

BMW says that the M6 Gran Coupe is palatial powerhouse. This is probably one of the very few cars in the market where hardcore motorsports engineering meets a four-door luxury sedan. The M6 is a great package. It is powerful, it is classy, it can be a great daily driver, it can be a great high companion and at the same time it can be a great track weapon. The multi-faceted nature of this mighty luxury sports sedan make it a serious contender in the segment.
