Still based on the regular 8-series, the M8 brings a lot of changes both under the hood and aesthetically, to help it stand out. Obviously, all of this sweetness doesn’t come for cheap as the all-new M8 coupe is priced at $133,00 and the M8 Competition charges $146,000. It has to spar against the likes of Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63, Audi R8, and Jaguar F-Type SVR.

The German high-performance car comes as a coupe, obviously, but it also is offered as a convertible and a Gran Coupe version. The two trims on offer are – M8 and M8 Competition. The M8 carrying the Competition badge is obviously meant to be the all-out, no-compromise version with blistering performance. 

But they also include a plush and luxurious interior. The Base trim gets the 4.4 L twin-turbo engine that produces 600 hp while the Competition advances to 617 hp with the same capacity. On top of that, the Base has been adorned with the Seat massage comfort with Merino leatherette. The Competition extends the features list with the shadow line trim and M Sport exhaust.

The Driver Assistance Package comes with features such as lane departure warning, active park distance control, surround-view w/ 3D view, rearview camera, etc. The Driver Assistance Package 2 has lesser features, with them being more or less the same. Finally, there is the Driving Assistance Professional Package with adaptive cruise control, active lane-keeping assistant w/ side collision avoidance, traffic jam assistant, etc.

Which Trim should you buy?

If you are someone who can spend over $133k, then we reckon you wouldn’t have an issue spending more. Therefore, it is best to get the M8 Competition, as it is the outright most powerful 8-series and will never fail to keep you entertained on the road or inside. It has more “M” ness inside it, alongside brutal performance and styling. The ride is also more comfortable. Finally, there are driver assistance packages for upgrades and more safety aids.

The 2020 BMW M8 Coupe is powered by a high-performance 4.4L twin-turbocharged V8 that pumps out a monstrous 600 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. The Competition’s powerplant is specifically tuned to bring out 617 horses while keeping the torque figures the same. The powertrain unit is coupled to a ZF eight-speed automatic which is every bit as exciting as it sounds. 

As standard, it comes with AWD, but if you turn stability control completely off, the front wheels are detached from the drivetrain, and the power is only delivered to the rear wheels. The base version can inject adrenaline into your bloodstream with a 0-60 MPH in just 3.1 seconds. Want more speed? Of course, the Comp takes you to the same in 3 second flat. With a quarter-mile timing of 11.4 seconds and a top speed of 190 MPH, the Bimmer is every bit as agile.

As expected, all of the cars are blisteringly fast in this list. Power delivery is not very consistent, however, as the Bimmer and the AMG S 63 lead the way with over 600 horses. The R8 sits at the bottom with about 40 fewer horses. Acceleration is quite similar, with the Bavarian having a slight edge with its absolute low rev-band preference curve. However, the Jaguar and Audi both can touch 200 miles per hour and can be a pain in the tail in street racing. 

How well does the 2020 BMW M8 Coupe handle?

The M8 handles just as well as it performs. The steering is direct and you can feel every feedback. As previously mentioned, you can play with either AWD or RWD. The car is very agile and features dynamic damper control to offer excellent ride comfort. You can barely feel the bumps on the road.

The car is heavy, so when you try hard cornering, you can actually feel a slight body lean. It is not an outright track demolisher, but a grand tourer with priorities being best driven at city or highway. Around turns, it can move smoothly and swiftly. In a straight line too, it is a beast. Perhaps the only downfall is the way the brake pedal feels, which is not the most compliant.

The BMW M8 Coupe comes with big 15.6” front rotors and 15” rear rotor brakes. It comes with some impressive features such as brake drying for better wet-weather stopping, brake-fade compensation, and also a brake cornering system. Along with that, the standard 4-wheel ABS vented discs are in linearity with the electronically-assisted brake boosters. One of the lightest in the segment gives it an advantage of lower forward push at the hard braking.

The M8 gets the biggest rotor pairs among the rivals. Contrary to that, the R8 gets the smallest yet manages to stop within 100 ft which is phenomenal. In comparison to that, the Mercedes-Benz has braking travel of 127 ft which makes it dependent on the packages for extra assurance. The complete data is not available, therefore it is quite impossible to land on a conclusion but the reactionary forces at the rotors guide us that braking prowess of at least 115 ft travel or less would be desirable.

The blistering speed and performance obviously mean that the German coupe is not going to be very fuel-efficient. It comes with an EPA estimate of 15 mpg for the city, 21 mpg for the highway, and 17 mpg for combined driving, for the base model. The Competition also returns similar figures, but we reckon it will deliver lesser economy while on the road, due to a higher power performance curve. The gas tank is 20.1-gallons, which seems to be undersized as it can haul you not more than 341 miles on average.

The others are way behind it in their range of approaches. A cherishing experience of high performance for a long distance can swell your soul with content. Thus, it is the best by a mile as per figures but the feel and sound might give others an impressive image as well.

The M8 and the S63 technically can seat four, although not very viable, that’s why the R8 and F-Type SVR got rid of them. The front row is spacious in all the cars here, while the rear row of the S63 is slightly more spacious than the Bimmer. When it comes to cargo capacity, the M8 and the S63 easily lead the way, while the other two can barely be deemed ‘practical’. Some interior features include:

A 10.25” infotainment screen running on BMW’s iDrive v7.0 and sticking out from the center console is at your helm to fulfill all your entertainment desires. The system is quite easy to use, intuitive, and also very responsive. The touchscreen can also be controlled by a rotary dial. A heads-up display is also available. 

The standard features on offer include Bluetooth, SiriusXM, HD Radio, wireless charging, Wi-Fi hotspot, voice-activated navigation, USB ports, 12V outlets, etc. Unfortunately, only Apple CarPlay is available so folks with Android would have to sit this one out. Of course, the 2020 BMW M8 Coupe is one gorgeous beast to look at. Its sleek and slender design coupled with the immaculate modern styling will be a feast for anyone’s eyes. The front fascia is totally distinct and unique from any other Bimmer model, but also unmistakably retaining the iconic presence. The classic BMW LED headlights with laser technology spearhead the vehicle. 

They look aggressive and furious, with a very wide blacked-out kidney grille giving it the stench of a Bavarian. The front bumper is quite large and wide and adds to the aggression. The side sees M-aerodynamic mirror caps and a pair of stylish gills on either side. The rear gets the carving with a sloping roofline along with the stylish LED taillights and quad-tip exhausts.

The eternal rivalry of the Germans always entertains. The M8 is better when it comes to performance and outright handling and fun-to-drivability. The Mercedes-Benz is just a tad bit more restraint, but it makes up for it by offering a more luxurious interior with more standard features. The Bimmer has more outlandish and stylish looks while the AMG S63 offers a statelier and more aristocratic look. Bear in mind that the Merc costs significantly more, but it is also more luxurious.

The Audi R8 is an all-around sports car that thrives on being fast and great to drive. It does not care much about the luxuries but about the drivability and track use. The BMW is more practical and also costs way less, while also being slightly faster and more fuel-efficient than the R8. The R8 offers a rawer driving dynamic but also features a luxurious but spartan interior, complemented by its own special looks. If you plan on taking the car to a track, then the R8 is a better choice but the M8 is a better GT.

The story is pretty much the same as the R8 here. The Jaguar F-Type SVR is also meant to be a track-decimating machine, but it also fares very well as a GT. The F-Type is also quite luxurious and also costs less, but it is not as fast and practical as the M8. Moreover, both look great, but the Jaguar has its own charm. If one intends to have it all in one go then the M8 seems to have more value and assets. 

2020 BMW M8 Final Verdict

Considering you have enough cash to choose, the 2020 BMW M8 Coupe is an excellent choice for a sporty and practical grand tourer coupe. The trunk space is massive, the interior is luxurious and the looks are killer. The performance is obviously the strongest point of the BMW M8 and it is also quite agile when pushed hard. The exclusion of Android Auto and standard driver assistance features is a bummer, but these are just the smallest of inconveniences in the grand scheme of things.
