The M badged cars from the BMW brand have always been known to offer great performance and satisfying track behavior. It is a known fact that BMW makes cars that offer “Sheer Driving Pleasure” but true performance aficionados know that the ultimate legacy and highest performance is reserved for its M badged cars only. The BMW cars with the M badge have been loved for decades for their powerful engines and physics-defying performance on the track. You can easily be fooled by its subtle exteriors and blown away by its performance.

Release Date

The official price of the 2022 M8 Competition has been released on the BMW website. Along with the price list, a complete set of specifications are also published by BMW. So the bookings are expected to begin soon.

2022 BMW M8 Engine and Performance

The 2022 BMW M8 Competition Coupe will be equipped with a 4.4-liter BMW M TwinPower Turbo V-8 engine producing road ripping and improved 617 HP and 553 lb-ft of torque. It is mated to an 8-speed M Sport Automatic transmission with Sport and Manual shift modes to make the driving experience even more fun. The performance is expected to be just as stellar as it can get. BMW claims a 0-60 mph sprint in 3.0 seconds, which is amusing for sure. It is available with M xDrive all-wheel-drive system with 2-wheel drive capability. As compared to the previous 2020 year model, there are 17 more horses to play around with.

As far as handling is concerned, it is much better than the previous model. The electronic power steering with Servotronic direct steering feels quite responsive. Added to that, a very responsive powertrain that is ready to attack the roads even on your slightest tap on the pedal makes it really engaging to drive. The M8 can offer comfortable rides owing to its twin-tube gas pressure shock absorbers which do the damping effectively. The xDrive system is a bliss to have but is rear-wheel drive biased, and the adaptive suspension system can electronically adjust the kinematics and elastokinematics of the suspension system, depending upon the performance mode selected.

The braking system is taken care of by the four-wheel ventilated anti-lock disc brakes. The features like Dynamic brake control and Cornering brake control ensure optimum braking performance under all conditions. For aggressive and track use, BMW offers an option for carbon-ceramic brake rotors which are much more resistant to brake fading and offer efficient braking performance for a longer duration of time. The Exhaust system is tuned for sound and silence. However, in sports mode, the exhaust sound is not as throaty as the AMG tuned system.

The 2022 M8 Competition does a 0-60 sprint in just 3.0 seconds, but that’s not enough to beat the Porsche 911 Turbo S. It boasts of a lesser time of just 2.8 seconds and is equipped with a flat-six engine that produces more horsepower. It also has a higher top speed than the BMW and all other rivals. The Jaguar F-Type is equipped with the biggest engine of the lot, however, it produced the least power. However, the performance timings are very similar to the Competition. The AMG S 63 Coupe comes close to the BMW M8 but loses out on pricing. The BMW is more accessible in terms of pricing.

2022 BMW M8 Fuel Economy

You can't expect something frugal from a machine which is track-ready. The 2022 BMW M8 Competition is claimed to deliver 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on highways. The combined efficiency comes to 17 mpg. With a fuel tank capacity of 20.1 gallons, you can expect a range of 301 miles, 422 miles, and 341 miles on a full tank of gas in city, highway, and combined conditions, respectively.

The Mercedes-Benz AMG S63 surprisingly offers the most fuel economy despite its healthy power output of 603 HP. It provides a combined fuel economy of 21 mpg, and from its larger fuel tank of 20.7 gallons, you can expect a combined range of staggering 455 miles on a full tank. The Porsche comes with a smaller capacity boxer engine and produces the highest power output of 640 HP. Its expected fuel efficiency figures are similar to the BMW M8. The Jaguar F-Type can also be considered fuel-efficient considering the cubic capacity of its larger engine.

2022 BMW M8 Interior

The 2022 BMW M8 gets some really upmarket and premium interiors that are a part of most of the M-models. The dashboard is trimmed in Nappa Leather finish along with the steering wheel. The trim pieces inside the cabin are made from carbon fiber material and look sporty. The 2022 M8 comes with a 12.1-inch touchscreen multimedia display and a 10.25-inch central information display that is in direct sight of the driver. The multi-input iDrive 7.0 system is operated by voice, touchscreen, and iDrive touchpad Controller. The modern design of the digital instrument cluster optimizes driver info, while the Head-up Display projects key info just below the driver's line of vision.

The features like Remote Engine Start, Automatic climate control, Soft-close automatic door operation, Multi-color adjustable ambient lighting, Front ventilated seats, Heated Front Seats, Armrests & Steering Wheel, Universal garage-door opener, etc gives it a premium appeal in addition to being sporty. The seats are wrapped in Merino leather upholstery, and the headliner is covered in Anthracite Alcantara material. The front two seats are separated by a center console which includes controls for the audio system and air conditioning. The customizable display is another intriguing feature of the BMW M8 that changes its interface depending upon your choice of driving mode.

All cars except the Jaguar F-Type come with a seating capacity for four people. The BMW M8 comes with much less headroom and legroom space when compared to its rivals. The M8 comes with the highest cargo capacity of 14.8 cu-ft, which is good for a car of its size and configuration. The Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 provides better headroom and legroom as compared to its competition. Porsche offers the least cargo capacity with its rear seats folded but offers an additional cargo capacity of 4.5 cu-ft in the front luggage compartment. The F-Type is a 2-seater car and offers 11.87 cu-ft of cargo capacity. Some of the standout interior features of the BMW M8 Competition are:

  • Merino leather upholstery
  • Carbon Fiber interior trim
  • Instrument panel with Nappa Leather finish
  • Engine Start/Stop button
  • Remote Engine Start
  • Comfort Access keyless entry
  • Multi-color, adjustable ambient lighting
  • Front Heated and Ventilated Seats
  • Heated steering wheel and armrests
  • LED Light Carpet
  • Automatic climate control

How intuitive is the car’s infotainment unit?

The 2022 BMW M8 comes with a 10.25-inch touchscreen display in the middle of the dashboard. It is powered by the BMW iDrive 7.0 infotainment system. The display is nice and crisp. The display is supported by an array of buttons and knobs on the center console. The interface is fluid and responsive, but for some functions, you need to dig deeper, and that's not possible while driving. The Voice command works really well, and there is optional availability for gesture controls too.

The infotainment system is loaded with wireless features, remote services, and intuitive technology. Features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. You also get connected package premium features like Real-Time Traffic Information and On-Street Parking Information, Hazard Preview, and BMW Remote Services including Stolen Vehicle Recovery, Remote Door Unlock, and BMW Connected App. The audio system is bound to make your journeys musical with the standard Harman Kardon Surround Sound System with a 464-watt amplifier and 16 speakers. You will also get support for SiriusXM with 360L + 1-year All Access Subscription. Some of the standout infotainment features of the BMW M8 Competition Coupe are:

  • 10.25 central multimedia display.
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • BMW TeleServices
  • BMW ConnectedDrive Services
  • Harman Kardon Surround Sound Audio System
  • SiriusXM Support

2022 BMW M8 Exterior

The 2022 BMW M8 looks track-ready from any angle you see at it. It comes with a long silhouette and sporty contours along with wide shoulders and low stance which very well conveys its sporty intentions. The BMW design team has also made the car aerodynamic by adding side air breathers and a sloping hood. The front aggressive intakes help in offering better performance and cools down the throbbing V-8 in a more efficient way.

The front fascia is a typical BMW with a split kidney bean grille and two aggressive LED headlamps. The sides get a beautiful sloping roofline and power-folding heated side mirrors. The M-type gills help with aerodynamic efficiency. The rear gets an M-type spoiler and twin exhaust tailpipes which just amplifies the performance aura of the car. The roof is also a carbon fiber unit and blends well with the overall design philosophy. The 20” M Star-spoke bi-color alloy wheels look magnificent and add to the sporty flavor.

The 2022 BMW M8 comes with a good ground clearance of 5.0 inches, just second to the AMG S 63. It also weighs considerably less than the AMG S 63 but is on the heavier side when compared to the likes of Porsche and Jaguar. The AMG S 63 has the maximum wheelbase for increased stability at higher speeds. The Porsche 911 has the smallest wheelbase which helps it with better handling and cornering abilities. It is also the lightest and hence boasts of better power to weight ratio as compared to the competition. It is also considerably lower which gives it an aerodynamic advantage. Some of the standout exterior features of the BMW M8 Competition Coupe are:

  • Shadowline exterior trim
  • M Rear spoiler
  • M Carbon Roof
  • Twin exhaust tailpipes
  • Power-folding, heated side mirrors
  • Signature M gills
  • 20” M Star-spoke bi-color alloy wheels

The features like Icon Adaptive LED Headlights with Laserlight, Adaptive Brake Lights, BMW Assist eCall, Anti-theft alarm system, Active Protection System, etc are proven to be very helpful in all usage scenarios. 2022 BMW M8 Competition

2022 BMW M8 Competition V/S 2022 Merc-Benz AMG S 63

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 will be priced much higher than the M8 and offer performance that will be very close to the M8. However, it is bound to offer better fuel economy from its smaller V8 engine. The AMG S 63 is expected to offer better luxury and comfort as compared to the M8. However, the M8 will fight back with its performance and a mix of sportiness and upmarket interiors. The 2022 M8 will seem to be a better value for money proposition overall.

2022 BMW M8 Competition V/S 2022 Porsche 911 Turbo S

The 2022 Porsche 911 will boast of a similar road scraping performance as the present model. It is the fastest of the lot with more horsepower and handles even better. However, considering its current price, the 2022 version will be more expensive and exclusive at the same time. It will also be less practical as compared to the M8. The extra premium you’ll be paying is for its track-ready approach, better dynamics, and timeless Porsche elegance.

2022 BMW M8 Competition V/S 2022 Jaguar F-Type R

The 2022 Jaguar F-Type R is expected to be priced relatively less than the M8. However, it will offer less performance and seating capacity as compared to the M8. The two-seater F-Type will be low on practicality and won’t be able to offer the sheer driving pleasure of the M8. The F-Type is a good performer but is a no-match for the M8, and it will be strictly for Jaguar fans.

2022 BMW M8 Final Verdict

The 2022 BMW M8 Competition now offers better performance and proves to be track-ready in most scenarios with its better handling and better optional braking features. It also comes with a host of advanced safety features that will ensure your peace of mind. The infotainment system is also loaded enough to entertain and inform you. The pricing is not for everyone, but it is much less than most of its closest rivals like the AMG S 63. Overall the pros are more as compared to the cons, so we won't mind recommending this Bavarian to you.
