BMW stirred the automotive world when it designed and launched the first generation 8 Series. After launch, it became the first-ever road car to come with a V12 motor paired with a 6-speed manual transmission and was intended to go beyond the original E24 6 Series. Despite all the fascinating stats, the car was short-lived and the brand ended its production by 1999. Much to everyone’s surprise, the 8 Series saw the light of the day once again back in 2018 and this time too the car was launched to succeed the modern 6 Series lineup.

Being a new entrant in the segment, the 2022 M850i will remain unchanged. The car is based on the brand’s CLAR platform and gets some interesting features such as a GPS-aided automatic transmission for predicting upshifts and downshifts based on the map data. The price of the upcoming model is expected to be around $110,395. In the segment, the convertible competes against the Audi R8 Spyder, the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT, and the Jaguar F-Type Convertible.

2022 BMW M850i Convertible Engine and Performance

8.0/10

The 2022 BMW M850i Convertible will be a carryforward model hence, its powertrain and performance stats will remain the same as well. The powertrain is a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged N63 V8 motor that delivers a maximum of 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft maximum torque. Being a twin-turbo motor, turbo lag is well contained, resulting in an instantaneous surge of power. The AWD layout along with the 8-speed automatic transmission offers impressive gripe levels and sticky handling.

2022 BMW M850i Convertible In Acceleration Mode

Since V8s are known for their deep and distinct growl, this engine also possesses the same trait and revving the motor hard results in a sweet and melodious exhaust note. In sports mode, the exhausts sound better and some amount of these noises do intrude inside the cabin only to enhance the sportiness of the car. The car handles like a proper sports car and the adaptive sport suspension aided by the active roll stabilization and the sport-tuned transmission works in perfect harmony to give you the best possible experience out on the roads as well as on the tracks. The car shoots from 0-60mph in a quick 3.8 seconds and clocks a quarter-mile time of 11.7 seconds. The top speed of the car is limited to 165mph with the extended speed limiter in the M850i.

The Audi R8 is a true stunner in the segment with its naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10 motor. The motor has an aggressive yet enjoyable sound along with a thrilling performance on tap. With the Quattro AWD layout, the car behaves properly on almost all tarmac conditions and allows the car to do a 0-60mph run within 3.5 seconds along with a quarter-mile run under 11.5 seconds flat. The car feels a lot sportier than the M850i while driving and justifies its hefty price tag. The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT is a brutal car in every aspect courtesy of the AMG treatment it gets. Despite having a set of modest power and torque output, the car is tuned to deliver the best from the powertrain and is almost as quick as the M850i. Also, the AMG GT gets a naturally aspirated V8 unit that sounds demonic to some extent. The Jaguar F-Type matches up to the R8 in terms of sheer performance and power figures despite getting a slightly smaller V8 motor. The F-Type also delivers an exceptional driving experience and can reach speeds over 200mph.

2022 BMW M850i Convertible Fuel Economy

7.5/10

High-performance cars with some crazy power and astonishing acceleration prowess can never deliver a practical fuel economy as long as it doesn’t employ any hybrid system or is an entirely electric performance car. The same is the case with the M850i as well. The car delivers a city mileage of 17mpg, a decent figure as compared to its rivals. The highway mileage is rated at 25mpg and the combined mileage stands at 20mpg. The convertible comes with a sizable gas tank of 18 gallons that offers a decent driving range of 360 miles.

The Audi R8 is the least fuel-efficient car here and the entire blame goes to the naturally aspirated V10 under its hood. To make up for this, the R8 comes with a big 21.1 gallons gasoline tank yet fails to offer even 300 miles of city driving range. The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT takes the second-last spot when it comes to fuel economy. Owing to its extreme tuning and muscular power figures, the car offers a mere 22mpg of highway mileage and 18mpg of combined mileage. The Jaguar F-Type comes out as a somewhat practical option here with its fuel economy figures closely trailing the M850i’s figures. Yet, like the Audi R8, it also fails to deliver even 300 miles of city driving range owing to its smaller 18 gallons gas tank.

2022 BMW M850i Convertible Interior

9.0/10

The interior of the BMW M850i convertible is quite plush and masks you from the outside world nicely, making you forget that you’re onboard an Audi R8 rivaling speed machine. Owing to the driver-focused design of the cabin, all the controls and the infotainment screen are easily accessible from the driver’s seat while both the front seats do get ventilation, eating, and full electronic adjustment features. Some premium touches including the soft closing doors and heated steering wheel along with heated armrests cover your practical requirements from the car.

2022 BMW M850i Convertible Driving Area

The front seats offer excellent comfort levels and support, making long drives a breeze and dynamic driving sessions truly fun. Some notable optional extras such as a crystal glass gear selector and some selectable control buttons hold the potential to offer something unique along with the brutal performance under the car’s hood. The rear seats feel out of place and are practically unusable even for kids yet can double up as an extra space to store your cargo items. The overall fit and finish levels of the cabin are excellent and the extensive use of soft-touch surfaces and leather appointments make for a pleasant experience every time you step in.

The Audi R8 comes in a two-seater configuration, making it somewhat less practical than the BMW M850i. On the other hand, the R8 offers an excellent cabin with some impressive comfort levels that might exceed your expectations given the performance-focused image of the car. The interior gets a robust build quality and all the controls, switchgear, and panels feel bolted in tightly. The interior design is quite sporty, aggressive yet has certain levels of opulence to it with those finely detailed stitchings and carefully put together styling elements and interior trim details. The cargo space on offer is on the lower side as opposed to the rivals here. The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT has an aggressively designed interior to gel in perfectly with its extreme performance tuning. Starting from the aggressive bucket seats the sportiness continues to the center stack that is rather busy with a bevy of control switches and knobs for various controls. The comfort levels are not as impressive as what the M850i or the R8 offers and are more focused on keeping the driver and the co-passenger in place at high-speed runs and cornering. The Jaguar F-Type gets a cabin that is both comfortable and sporty with an elegant design that is rather simpler than the one you’d find in the R8 or the AMG GT. With a decent amount of comfort levels and features within the cabin, the F-Type feels like other Jaguar vehicles out there but the headroom on offer might be a tight fit for tall people.

Some interior features are:

  • Soft-close doors
  • Power-adjustable, heated, and ventilated front sport seats
  • Head-up display
  • Digital gauge cluster
  • Heated M steering wheel and armrests
  • Faceted glass gear selector and controls(optional)

How intuitive is the infotainment system?

BMW’s iDrive system has always been one of the best in the market and the M850i gets the latest 7.0 version of the same. The system runs on a massive 10.25-inch touchscreen display and offers an excellent experience with a smooth user interface and easy-to-use layout.

2022 BMW M850i Convertible Infotainment System

The system can be controlled via voice commands and the iDrive touchpad controller mounted on the center stack too. The system also gets an in-built navigation system that also feeds GPS data to the transmission system for predictable gear shifts. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay along with Bluetooth and satellite radio are offered as standard.

Some standout infotainment features of the infotainment system are:

  • 10.25-inch touchscreen display with iDrive 7.0 interface
  • Bluetooth
  • Sirius XM radio
  • Navigation
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Real-time traffic display and temperature display

2022 BMW M850i Convertible Exterior

9.0/10

On the outside, the BMW M850i gets a unique design that is not seen in any other vehicles from the brand, much like the i8. The front fascia gets a sharp and aggressive styling and thankfully, the car is spared from the awkward and polarizing grille design that the brand has decided to slap on most of its cars. The LED headlights along with the angular-designed LED running lights, accentuate the front grille nicely.

2022 BMW M850i Convertible Side View

The hood gets some sculpted design and lines that give a muscular appeal to the car from the front. On the side, the design is rather simple and gets the M-specific aero kit as standard along with the blacked-out exterior trim details. The rear end looks busy with the aggressively styled LED taillights and the trunk-lid design along with a sporty rear bumper design as well.

The Audi R8 ranks among one of the best-looking cars in the segment. Right from the front, the super aggressive front fascia will attract everyone’s attention and the blacked-out exterior trims surely makes the car’s performance stats more pronounced visually. With a supercar-like stance, the R8 has a low-slung design along with an almost ground-scraping ground clearance of 3.8-inches. The Mercedes-AMG GT gets that frowning and big front grille design that debuted with this car and it translates into a more pronounced styling to show off the extreme performance tuning of the car. The car has a rather small footprint and is among the lightest ones in the segment as well. The Jaguar F-Type, with the new design from the British brand, looks fast even when at a standstill. The sleek and stretched LED headlamps along with a longer nose than before, look nice and sporty while the rear end also has a sleek profile too with the LED taillight design.

Some exterior features are:

  • 20-inch M wheels
  • Adaptive sport suspension
  • Black exterior trim
  • Adaptive LED headlights
  • Aerodynamic body kit
  • Rear Spoiler

2022 BMW M850i Convertible Safety

9.0/10

Owing to the exotic price tag, the BMW M850i never underwent the crash tests from both the NHTSA and the IIHS. Despite that, the car comes with a full suite of advanced and basic safety techs onboard along with optional driver assistance features as well. Some of the standard features include a Lane departure warning and a Forward collision mitigation system. The optional driver assistance packages offer a Surround-view camera system, Parking sensors, an automated parking system, Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control.

Some of the standout safety features include:

  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Lane departure warning
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Parallel and perpendicular park assist
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Night vision camera

2022 BMW M850i Convertible Competition

7.5/10

BMW M850i vs Audi R8

The Audi R8 with its naturally aspirated V10 is a direct competitor of the M850i yet the latter offers almost ninety percent of the performance of the R8 at a cheaper price tag. Design-wise, the M850i fails to match with the R8 with the latter’s super aggressive styling and a super-car-like exterior design.

Audi R8

On the inside, the R8 lacks the practicality of the M850i with its two-seat configuration and lack of storage spaces. In the fuel economy department too, it falls quite short as well.

BMW M850i vs Mercedes-Benz AMG GT

The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT is one of the most extreme and raw performance vehicles you can have in the segment. Right from its exterior design to the fully performance-specced interior theme, the AMG GT means serious business yet its performance stats are quite similar to the cheaper M850i. On the practicality aspect, the AMG GT falls behind seriously.

Mercedes-Benz AMG GT

BMW M850i vs Jaguar F-Type

The Jaguar F-Type Convertible is a serious competitor to the BMW M850i yet it is cheaper and delivers better performance as compared to the latter. With its striking looks and a sleek profile, the F-Type defined British elegance from every angle while the M850i holds an edge over it with its sensible and rich design along with a lot more practicality on offer as compared to the F-Type.

Jaguar F-Type

2022 BMW M850i Convertible Final Verdict

The BMW M850i is already an appealing vehicle owing to its design and being a part of the legendary BMW 8 Series. Thankfully, the M850i will not get the new design from the brand and will continue in its present and handsome form into the upcoming model year. In the segment, the car offers an excellent value for money with its impressive performance, decent fuel economy, a plush yet practical cabin, and perfectly tuned driving dynamics. Its segment rivals might offer quicker acceleration times and better looks but none of them can beat the Beemer with its relatively cheaper price tag and its excellent value for money.
