The BMW X1 has been one of the most popular crossover SUVs in the market. With a simple yet elegant design, a comfortable interior, and a decent performance, the X1 fulfills all it's required to do. However, the current generation is a continuation of the one that came out in the year 2015 and is desperately due for an update. The 2022 BMW X1 isn't quite the facelift but does include some differences from the previous year's model.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

For this first time, the X1 is going to come in an optional EV trim, which is going to open a lot of doors for EV vehicles. However, that is a speculation that we have made based on the platform changes. Combine it with the already upmarket interior fittings and high-quality materials, and voila, you get a bestseller. The 2022 BMW X1 will rival the Audi Q3, the Cadillac XT4, and the the Lexus NX 300. Let's see if the old-fashioned BMW can outperform the new blood or not.

2022 BMW X1 Features

The 2022 BMW X1 SUV will be available in two trims: the front-wheel-drive sDrive28i or the all-wheel-drive xDrive28i. Both are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that propels 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The M Sport package adds features such as a sportier exterior trim, unique wheel design, sport-tuned transmission, sport front seats, and unique interior trim. The Convenience package adds features such as power-folding mirrors, auto-dimming interior, and exterior mirrors, ambient interior lighting, panoramic sunroof, and adjustable lumbar support for the front seats.

The Premium package adds features like LED headlights, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, head-up display, and upgraded navigation. The last one, the luxury package adds an authentic leather and wood grain or aluminum trim.

We Recommend

We would strongly go for the X1 sDrive28i and add more options at extra cost. The Premium package gets you features like LED headlights with cornering lights, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, upgraded navigation, keyless entry, and a Head-up display.

2022 BMW X1 Engine and Performance

We don't expect the powertrain to change much as the 2.0L Inline-4 turbocharged engine is doing just fine. The engine cranks out a decent 228 horsepower and 258lb-ft of torque, which drags the 2022 BMW X1 quite fast down the road. The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission which powers all four wheels and gives you a smooth ride. Speaking of a smooth ride, the cabin seems quiet during the drive, which is great as it feels quite luxurious.

Apart from that, it has the guts to go down the track from 0-60 MPH in just 6.8 seconds and cross the quarter-mile mark in just 14.1 seconds. The reason that there's a “just” in front of those figures is that the size is humongous and hence speeding through like that is quite an impressive feat. Overall, the engine underneath the hood isn't going to disappoint you at all.

*speculated specs

As compared to the competition, the X1 seems to be on par. However, in terms of acceleration, the beemer has everyone else beat.

How does the 2022 BMW X1 handle?

The manufacturer is pushing the 2022 BMW X1 as a versatile vehicle that is capable of doing tough maneuvers and can easily tackle any surface. As noticed in the previous interactions, the BMW X1 has always given a more balanced ride quality, which is not too snazzy.

And when you aren’t in the mood to drive enthusiastically, it keeps the interior composed, and quiet. The suspensions are supple and the steering is responsive, which when combined with the engine that it comes with, gives you a good drive.

2022 BMW X1 Fuel Economy

One of the more surprising things about the 2022 BMW X1 is that even though it comes with a turbocharged inline-four, it offers you a great MPG. Speaking of which, the 2022 BMW X1 is expected to give you an average MPG of 23 in the suburbs, 32 on the highway, and 26 combined.

With the 16.1-gallon fuel tank, you can push the 2022 BMW X1 to its limits on the highway and help it reach about 500 miles of range. However, you can expect the economy to go over the roof once the EV version shows up, which is going to be great news across the automobile market.

As compared to the rivals, the 2022 BMW X1 is on par in terms of fuel economy, however, if you look at the highway MPG, the X1 has a slight edge over everyone else.

2022 BMW X1 Interior

We have always been delighted with the beemer’s interior and the 2022 BMW X1 is no different. However, if you speak strictly in terms of design, the cabin does look quite bland. It's not what we expect from a car in this price range. Speaking of comfort, this Bimmer SUV is comfortable. with leather upholstery all over and soft-to-touch material on the dash and the doors, the cabin feels immaculate.

The padding on the seats is good and the bolstering on the side makes you feel secure and supported. The crossover can easily accommodate 5 passengers with room left. The rear row doesn't feel cramped at all even for taller adults, which is going to be one of the USPs for the X1.

As compared to the competitors, the X1 feels quite larger in size. If you look at the rear legroom, it's greater than most of the rivals out there which makes it feel quite roomy overall. The cargo capacity is top-notch and is the largest in the segment.

The 2022 BMW X1 Will come with interior features such as:

  • All Glass roof with a panoramic sunroof
  • Power-adjustable front seats
  • Automatic Climate Control
  • Automatic Air Filtration
  • Split-folding rear setback
  • Infotainment screen
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • USB-C Ports
  • Premium Audio System

2022 BMW X1: Infotainment and Connectivity

Moving on to the infotainment, the 2022 BMW X1 is going to show off a standard 8.8-inch infotainment screen, which is the iDrive system. This system is considered to be one of the best infotainment systems to be installed in any vehicle. However, the only drawback is that it does not support Android Auto even now.

2022 BMW X1 infotainment screen

The standard speakers are not as immersive however if you upgrade to the 12 speaker setup from Harman Kardon, nothing like it. The voice recognition is quick and responsive and doesn't pick up gibberish. Overall, the cabin quality and the infotainment make the interior experience inside great.

Some of the highlights of the infotainment system are as follows:

  • HD Radio
  • 12 speaker Harman/Kardon sound system (Optional)
  • Seven speaker audio system
  • Standard 8.8 inch iDrive infotainment system
  • Apple CarPlay
  • IN-dash navigation
  • Bluetooth connection

2022 BMW X1 Exterior

There are no major changes in the 2022 BMW X1 except the slight design touchups of the third-gen. The camouflaged car looked slightly larger than the previous year’s model and is believed to be wider as well. Even without the changes, the BMW X1 carries a classic old-fashioned crossover look that looks appealing to most.

As compared to the competition, the BMW has the largest ground clearance which makes it slightly more adaptive on the off-road however, that is not what we expect extensively from the X1.

Some of the exterior features of the 2022 BMW X1 are:

  • LED headlamps
  • Fog lights
  • Tinted LED taillights
  • Larger exhaust tips
  • Glass roof
  • 21” Optional wheels

2022 BMW X1 Safety

In terms of safety, the BMW X1 is a great vehicle in the segment. The previous year's model received a 5-star rating from the NHTSA and IIHS hasn't rated it yet. However, looking at the safety features and the build quality, we expect the 2022 BMW X1 to be a safe and sound vehicle that can take a beating. Speaking of safety features, the 2022 X1 is expected to come with primary safety features like the following:

  • Rear Parking Aid
  • Stability Control
  • Traction Control
  • Tire Pressure Monitor
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic High beam headlamps

2022 BMW X1 Final Verdict

The 2022 BMW X1 is expected to completely take the game on its head, in the class. The performance is inspiring and the driving experience is great as well. The comfort factor is decent, but the design is quite bland. Overall, if you’re looking for a comfortable family SUV, the all-new X1 deserves to be in contention.
