Most car enthusiasts have been disappointed with what BMW has been producing for a couple of years because the expectations from BMW are quite high. But here’s some good news for you. The perkiness in BMW is now back. The BMW X3 was fully redesigned in 2018 and for this year it comes unchanged without any new updations. Harboring a dual-purpose nature, the BMW Sedan would be coming out with a luxury appeal and stellar performance that would be apt for the enthusiasts out there.

The base model of the 2019 BMW X3 comes packed with a sweet turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and fine interiors. And if you are more than just an enthusiast, then you may want to get the X3 M40i which comes with a turbocharged inline-six engine. Pricing for the 2019 X3 starts at $41,000 while the highest-end M40i trim costs $54,650. The 2019 BMW X3 competes with the Volvo XC60, Audi Q5, and the Porsche Macan.

2019 BMW X3 Features

Though the BMW X3 lineup has been granted with three trims: sDrive30i, xDrive30i, and M40i, the base model and the upper one are comparatively the same in order of sharing most of the features and options. The base model comes with a standard set of features: a 6.5-inch touch screen, Bluetooth, a USB port, a 12-speaker stereo, HD Radio, satellite radio, proximity keyless entry, a power liftgate, tri-zone automatic climate control, synthetic leather upholstery, and 18-inch wheels.

The xDrive30i is also the same except for it comes standard with an AWD setup. The M40i on the top of the line offers a more sporty and performance-oriented touch to the X3 SUV. On the brighter edge, M40i adds an M Sport suspension, a better set of brakes, 19-inch wheels, a panoramic moonroof, and adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beams. The following table shows the detailed feature list of the 2019 X3-

Which trim should you buy?

If you are on the same page as us, we’re sure that you’d want the X3 M40i that generates 355 horses with its turbocharged inline-six engine. But you should go for the X3 xDrive30i, which will give you more value for money. It’s a model that the enthusiast in you would love to drive. The Luxury Design trim in this version with added Premium package gives you optimum luxury inside. With this, get the Dynamic Damper Control, which is the optional adaptive suspension.

2019 BMW X3 Engine and Performance

8.4/10

The 2019 BMW X3 comes with 2 gasoline derivatives and an AWD setup. The rapid-fire ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox is an add-on. In the X3 30i, you get the 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine which generates 248 horses and 258 lb-ft of torque figures. Powered with a turbocharged inline-6 engine with a 3.0L displacement, generating 355 horses and 369 lb-ft of torque output, the X3 M40i comes at the top of the range.

However, if you are conscious of your budget, you can go for the 30i derivative of this model. On the flip side, if you are a performance freak, you must go for the M40i. To reach 0-60 MPH, the xDrive 30i requires about 6.8 seconds. The sDrive30i is expected to perform slightly better; it hasn’t been tested yet. If you are more after a power-packed engine, you should go for the X3 M40i because its 355 horses from the turbocharged 3.0L inline-six-cylinder engine provide excess power.

The base engine of the X3 is certainly strong but not as much as the base engine of its rivals. In this case, Porsche Macan takes the trophy by generating the best torque output by a significant margin. Volvo is the most powerful one, but the difference is just 2 hp and it lacks in the torque game significantly compared to the Audi and Porsche. The Q5 however, is the fastest to gain a speed of 60mph.

How well does the 2019 BMW X3 handle?

You must have been reading about how the handling of Porsche Macan and Audi’s Q5 has become better than expected in the past few years. Well, that’s also something that BMW intends to do with the X3. The car delivers you a perfect equilibrium when it comes to riding and handling, especially if you consider its performance. The X3 is certainly an engaging machine to drive and when equipped with the xDrive AWD system it provides immense grip and stability while carving corners.

However, the RWD sDrive model is also bliss to drive, and overall the X3 is a superb choice in terms of driving dynamics and handling. Plus, in the M40i model, the steering is smooth and offers you ease of control. Though the steering is heavy-weight, it feels light when in control. The M40i also comes with a sport-tuned suspension along with the Dynamic Handling package, which comes with an adaptive suspension setup, upgraded brakes, and variable-ratio steering.

2019 BMW X3 Braking Performance

If you want some sort of manipulation in the braking system, you can do that because they are quite light. You can also add some features to reduce emergency braking distance in the performance of the brakes. The X3 is equipped with 13-inch brake rotors in the front and rear. With these brakes, the car stops at 112 ft from 60 MPH, which is a great number considering how much the car weighs.

Out of the competition, it’s only the Macan that gets the biggest discs at the front. However, the car is slowest when it is tested for its emergency braking abilities. In terms of reaction, the Audi Q5 and the BMW X3 are the fastest to react as you press the pedal, they would take only 112 feet to halt from 60 MPH. The Volvo is also good and follows the due while the Porsche is at last place.

2019 BMW X3 Fuel Economy

7.5/10

BMW has always been reputed for the performance it provides in its crossovers. The previous model of the X3 was also reputed for the same. And the best part was that performance did not come at the cost of fuel economy. The engine that the X3 comes packed with is certainly fuel-efficient. It delivers 26 MPG of combined economy, which is decent. So, when it comes to forking out fuel costs, your pockets will be happier.

When it comes to fuel efficiency, the BMW X3 is grabbing its trophy with pride. It can run for 22 MPG in the city, 29 MPG on the highway, and 25 MPG combined. These numbers are close to the Volvo XC60 and Audi Q5, especially in the combined efficiency area. The Macan is the least efficient among these while the BMW leads the pack in the fuel economy department.

2019 BMW X3 Interior

8.2/10

The interiors of the 2019 BMW X3 stay in sync with its reputation. There may not be many changes in the interiors of the new BMW from the previous model, but the luxury provided inside will still entice you the same. Inside, you get soft and plush materials to keep you comfortable. The dashboard also has a soft touch and feel, but it differs from trims. Intricate detailing inside is put together in perfect sync. And the feel of luxury is not lost in even one bit.

All the seats of the car have been dipped in leather upholstery. And 5 full-fledged adults can sit comfortably. Some adjustment options are provided that make it, even more, relaxing for you inside. In terms of space also, the X3 does brilliantly. The tall door apertures give you easy ingress and egress. It also offers you a great ride and handling quality, climate control micro-adjustments, and the suspension certainly soaks up heavy bumps.

Comfort-wise, the X3 is totally upbeat. With lots of adjustments provided inside and supportive seats, the car beats its rivals in terms of interiors. The cabin space may not feel enough but it’s much more than the Macan. The X3 also comes with a perfect trunk space of 28.7 cubic feet. All of the models compared here come with luxurious and high-quality interiors; however, the Volvo is the most spacious one. The following are some of the most important interior features of the 2019 BMW X3-

  • Nevada Leather Upholstery
  • Eight-way power-adjustable front sport seats with manual thigh bolster and power lumbar support
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Heated front seats
  • Dark Copper High Gloss trim
  • Heated rear seats

2019 BMW X3 Exterior

9.9/10

Perhaps yes! The boxiness of the SUVs has been given away in the BMW X3. It’s different from the usual BMWs. The muscular X3, however, creates a dominating road presence. The wheels in the corner, wider intakes, and increased wheelbase add to the charm. The different-looking roofline of the X3 further adds to the style and sleekness of the car and makes it look more elegant. There are multiple wheel options on offer with the 2019 X3, sizes ranging from 18 to 20 inches and they come in different styles.

The X3 is offered in nine metallic shades and two non-metallic options to choose from. The kidney grille of the perfect size in the front-end accompanied by the projector or LED adaptive headlamps, crafted beautifully on both sides, the BMW X3 looks beautifully aggressive from the front. The available M Sport Package which is standard in the M40i trim adds even more aggressive bodywork and front and rear bumpers. Overall it is a treat to look at.

The 2019 Volvo XC60 is the heavier one among all of these machines, not by a huge margin, but still, all the others have managed to keep their weights very similar. The Volvo however, also offers the most ground clearance and also is the widest. Based on exterior beauty, all of these crossover SUVs look impressive but the Porsche Macan would be the most elegant one to look at. The BMW X3 is also an aesthetically good-looking machine with an aggressive-looking stance and front end. The following are some of the most important exterior features of the 2019 BMW X3-

  • Adaptive Full LED Lights
  • Automatic high beams
  • Double Spoke High-Gloss light-alloy wheels
  • Panoramic Moonroof

2019 BMW X3 Safety

8.8/10

These outstanding scores ensure that the 2019 BMW X3 is a super safe machine. Some mention-worthy safety features integrated into the 2019 BMW X3 include adaptive cruise control, active lane-keeping assistant, heads-up display, a rear-view camera; all as the Driving Assistance Plus Package. The following are the prominent safety features in the 2019 BMW X3-

  • Active Blind Spot Detection
  • Active Driving Assistant
  • ACC with Stop & Go
  • Surround View
  • Speed Limit Info
  • Park Distance Control

2019 BMW X3 Competition

7.5/10

2019 BMW X3 vs 2019 Volvo XC60

The Volvo XC60 must be cheaper than the BMW X3, but it comes with many great features. And the safety figures of the XC60 are great. In terms of looks, the X3 grabs appreciation. It is also the more engaging one to drive whereas the Volvo is more spacious. So, if you want a sporty one then choose the BMW, and for more comfort and space opt for the Volvo.

2019 BMW X3 vs 2019 Audi Q5

The BMW X3 will cost you less than the Audi Q5. The Q5 offers you more safety features as compared to the X3. And it also comes with Audi’s virtual cockpit. Both these SUVs come packed with a powerful lineup and offer you a sporty ride. But when it comes to the features and opulence, the Q5 does better. But the boot space and the overall interior luxury are higher inside the X3.

2019 BMW X3 vs 2019 Porsche Macan

Luxury-wise, the 2019 Porsche Macan comes out as more opulent than the 2019 BMW X3. In terms of handling and suspension setup, Porsche takes the better seat. The engine revs perfectly and it’s easy to go past the 60 MPH benchmark. The Macan, however, loses when it comes to ergonomics and interiors. Overall, for the much lower price, the BMW X3 is the best choice.

2019 BMW X3 Final Verdict

When the title BMW comes, it’s not even a question. And with the X3, BMW has already upgraded its performance. But the car is also a family SUV, so you can surely get it. The inline-6 potent engine coupled with sports suspension in the 2019 BMW X3 M40i gives you the ideal performance that the enthusiast in you requires. Even without the high-performance model, the X3 is a very well handling vehicle offering a luxurious high-quality interior and adequate space, making it a great option in the segment.
