When it comes to premium performance-oriented SUVs that pack a good amount of power and other performance attributes, the competition is intense. Customary to the tough competition, various German carmakers offer their masterpieces. The 2021 X3 M faces a head-to-head rivalry from the likes of Mercedes-AMG GLC 63, Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, and Porsche Macan Turbo.

The 2021 X3 M, unfortunately, comes in a single trim only. However, you can choose among several Additional Packages which bring quite a generous amount of features. 2021 BMW X3 M SUV Engine and Performance

9.1/10

The engine on the 2021 X3 M plays the hero here, and it’s the primary reason behind the expensive price tag. Under the hood, the 2021 BMW X3 M comes equipped with a 3-Liter twin-turbo inline-6 engine coupled with an 8-speed M-Sport automatic transmission with sport and manual shift modes. As standard, power is sent to all the wheels via an AWD system. The twin-turbo 6-cylinder engine generates 473 horses and 442 lb-ft torque. Opting for the Competition package pushes the power figures to 503 hp.

2021 BMW X3 M SUV driving view

Happen to ponder about the engine’s mannerisms? Well, be ready to experience a thrill once you press the pedal. The engine is responsive to the slightest of the inputs as it covers 0-60 MPH in just 3.9 seconds and can reach a quarter-mile within 12.4 seconds, while the transmission remains buttery smooth. In short, it is fast, engaging, and you will feel the significant difference between the base X3 and the M model as soon as you get it moving.

The X3 M is the only SUV in the comparison which comes with an inline-6 engine. The Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio is the most powerful on paper here churning out an impressive 505 horses. It is the quickest on the 0-60MPH run, covering it in 3.6 seconds. The Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 has the most torque, but it doesn’t translate well on the road. Moreover, the cars in comparison are expensive, which makes the 2021 X3 M the most VFM product here.

How well does the 2021 BMW X3 M handle?

The 2021 X3 M also checks the boxes when it comes to handling characteristics. The vehicle is designed beautifully and has a decent wheelbase. The SUV boasts a ground clearance of 8”, and in combination with the AWD system, it won’t be a problem to steer through some snowy roads. Its powerful twin-turbo inline 6 is capable of moving the X3 M through snow, sand, and slippery surfaces without much difficulty.

The 2021 X3 M comes fitted with an M Sport Suspension system as standard. Though it sits on the firmer side, it absorbs the little bumps well. This suspension set-up of X3 M provides a good grip and confidence on the sharp turns but X3 M somewhat feels uncomfortable on bumpy roads. The BMW X3 M also has a 3-spoke power tilt-telescopic M-Sport steering wheel, which is responsive and feels light.

Braking Performance

All the wheels of the 2021 BMW X3 M come fitted with M-Compound ventilated disc brakes with cross-drilled rotors. You also get ABS, EBD, DSC, brake drying, and dynamic mode braking system as standard tech. The braking system comprises 15.6” and 14.6” brake rotors in the front and back, respectively. These huge brakes help bring the vehicle to stop from 60 mph in just 105 feet, which is honestly, impressive!

The M-Sport brakes in the X3 M offer excellent braking potential. Though the braking distance of the AMG isn’t available presently, we expect similar results to the BMW as the brake rotors are similar in dimensions. Porsche Macan Turbo is lighter than the other two, and given the brand’s history of offering excellent driving dynamics, we bet on it to stop the quickest from 60MPH.

2021 BMW X3 M SUV Fuel Economy

5.0/10

The 2021 X3 M is the performance-based sibling of the regular X3. Keeping in mind the excellent performance figures, the mileage offered here is still satisfactory. It returns 14 mpg in city driving, 19 mpg on straight highways, and 16 mpg under the combined conditions. Combined with 17.2 gallons of the fuel tank, this sports SUV manages a range of 327 miles on the highway.

All rivals in the competition offer better fuel economy than the X3 M. The AMG-GLC 63 returns a decent 17 mpg in combined conditions, which is slightly better than the BMW. But the Stelvio and Macan absolutely own this section with an average efficiency of 19 mpg, despite being powerful and quicker. The Macan also comes with a large 19.8-gallon fuel tank, and with that, it can easily offer over 416 miles of driving range.

2021 BMW X3 M SUV Interior

7.5/10

The 2021 BMW X3 M is built with a spacious cabin that is a subtle mixture of being pragmatic and exemplary artistry. All the seats are placed well with enough passenger head and legroom on offer, while the controls are user-friendly and placed within easy reach. The seats are wide, synthetic leather-covered, and cushioned well. Furthermore, the front seats are power-adjustable and come with driver’s seat memory and heating function as well. At the rear, the seats are laid back and wide. The back seats can easily accommodate 2 people, try to fit in another one and the person sitting in the middle may feel short of space.

All the SUVs are 5 seaters, however, the BMW offers the best front row room and the largest standard trunk capacity of 28.7 cu-ft. In the rear, the AMG GLC 63 takes the win in terms of shoulder and legroom by a couple of inches. Anything can’t be said about the 2021 Porsche Macan Turbo, but the legroom in both the front and rear compartment of Alfa Romeo is quite underwhelming as compared to BMW & AMG. Some standout interior features include:

  • M Sport multifunction leather steering wheel
  • Anthracite Headliners
  • Carbon Fiber interior trim
  • 12.3" digital instrument cluster
  • 10-way power-adjustable and 3-stage heated front seats
  • Adjustable Multicolor interior ambient lighting
  • Automatic 3-zone Climate Control

2021 BMW X3 M SUV Exterior

7.0/10

The best thing about BMW is you can easily spot one from even at a distance. The iconic kidney grille, the Corona Rings and programmable LEDs, and sleek iconic body design make the BMWs easily recognizable. For 2021, the X3 M looks sharper and sleeker. The large kidney grille on the front, sitting between the corner hugging iconic Adaptive LED Headlights and Programmable LED DRLs, adds the sophisticated appeal to the car.

2021 BMW X3 M SUV

The Aerodynamic Kit and M-Rear Spoiler add to the sporty characteristics. Finally, M quad tailpipes and 20” Double-Spoke bi-color alloy wheels fit the below arcs well and add the final garnishing to the overall appeal. One can choose the BMW packages that come with this car, where the Executive Package is the most VFM as it includes carbon-fiber exterior accents, 360 camera view, and other interior features.

The BMW X3 M with its curb weight of 4,620 lbs is the heaviest SUV in comparison because of its long and tall body. The Stelvio sits a little wider and taller but comes with a short wheelbase, which means that it would offer greater stability while turning. The Stelvio is also the lightest of the lot. Moreover, the 2021 X3 M comes with a large ground clearance at 8-inches which helps it in a bit of offroading as well. Standout exterior features include:

  • 20" Double-spoke Bi-color orbit grey alloy wheels
  • Power-folding, heated side mirrors
  • Aerodynamic Kit, M quad tailpipes, and rear spoiler
  • Icon Adaptive Full LED Headlights
  • Programmable LED Daytime Running Lights

2021 BMW X3 M SUV Safety

8.5/10

BMW is synonymous with not only making the best-looking and premium rides, but it also earns a comfortable place when it comes to safety. The 2021 X3 M is based on the BMW CLAR Platform; the chassis is strong and sturdy, composed of steel, aluminum, and carbon fiber. The chassis is further coupled with the M-Suspension system, which helps control body roll. All the wheels are fitted with ventilated disc brakes and programmed with ABS, Traction Control, EBD, and Automatic Emergency Braking. Also, there is a heap of driver assistance programs. Standout safety features include:

  • Hill Descent Control (HDC)
  • Front and Rear Park Distance Control
  • Frontal Collision Warning
  • Active Blind Spot Detection
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Automatic City Collision Mitigation and Braking
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Adaptive Brake lights
  • Programmable LED Daytime Running Lights

2021 BMW X3 M SUV Competition

7.5/10

2021 BMW X3 M vs 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63

The X3 M is priced 4-grand lesser than the Mercedes. Moreover, it offers better performance despite being an inline engine compared to the latter’s V8. The BMW offers a premium look in terms of styling, while the latter is blessed with the sporty exterior styling. It’s a matter of taste and preference when it comes to the appeal, but as far as the performance is concerned, BMW is clearly the winner here. However, when it comes to fuel economy BMW flips out.

2021 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63

2021 BMW X3 M vs 2021 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio

If you’re seeking thrills and performance, the BMW X3 M is worth every dollar you spend. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio is more powerful on paper but is significantly more expensive than the X3 M. Also, BMW enjoys better reliability ratings than the latter. Moreover, the BMW offers a bigger trunk and a better interior, and with its selectable packages, it gets more appealing. So we definitely recommend the X3 M.

2021 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio

2021 BMW X3 M vs 2021 Porsche Macan Turbo

The Porsche Macan Turbo impresses us with better fuel efficiency and better range thanks to the large fuel tank. But Macan hasn’t enjoyed a makeover for a long time, so it may be a bit bland for some. Here, the BMW X3 M will get your praise because of how beautiful it looks from the in-out. At the end of the day, some may prefer Porsche because of the brand name and handling dynamics, but the BMW is what we would rather lay our hands-on.

2021 BMW X3 M SUV Final Verdict

The 2021 BMW X3 M is the performance-oriented sibling of the regular X3. It looks amazing inside out and comes equipped with an airy, comfortable, and feature-packed cabin. You also get a premium Harman Kardon sound system to feed your musical guilty pleasures. Apart from the comfort and appeal, the SUV brings in the best-in-class safety features and driver-assistance aids. If you happen to take a peek at the comparison, you’ll see how the BMW outdid the others in almost everything, well, except the fuel economy.
