The 2020 BMW X3 M40i comes in as a performance version of the X3 basic SUV, which is one of the most popular mid-sized premium SUVs in its segment. While the standard model comes with a 2.0L four-cylinder engine and a turbo, there is a 3.0L Turbo inline-six engine in M40i, which can deliver around 355 horsepower. Being a part of the third generation of X3s introduced back in 2018, the new X3 M40i does not bring in any noticeable changes for the 2020MY except for the slight bump in power and the addition of a standard navigation system throughout the lineup.

The new BMW X3 M40i comes in a single trim with a starting price of $55,900, slotting right in between the regular X3 and the full-blown X3 M. It only gets offers with a single powertrain option and sports xDrive AWD system as standard. It mainly competes with other German performance SUVs such as the Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43, Porsche Macan S, and the Audi SQ5.

2020 BMW X3 M40i SUV Features

7.0/10

The BMW X3 M40i itself is a standalone trim of the lineup. The M40i comes with a 3.0L Turbo inline-6 engine which is mated to a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission The price has been set at $55,900 which is one of the most affordable in its class. That said, BMW does offer a handful of packages to further customize the car according to user preferences. These packages include a driver assistance package at $1,700, a parking assistance package at $700, an executive package at $4,800, and a premium package at $2,450.

Talking about the features that come as standard, you get a 10.3-inch iDrive infotainment system with navigation and a 12-speaker audio system, 12.3-inch live cockpit, simulated leather upholstery, powered front sports seats, three-zone automatic climate control, Power tailgate, heated/power mirrors, full LED exterior lighting, 19-inch wheels and much more which we will talk about in the article. Unfortunately, advanced driver assistance features seem to be a miss on this model, and adding these would cost you a premium over the base price.

Which Trim should you buy?

The 2020 BMW X3 M40i SUV itself is a standalone trim and a performance version of the regular BMW X3. While the price difference between the normal X3 SUV and this performance variant is almost $15k, the specs and features of the M40i SUV make it a worthwhile purchase. BMW does offer a few packages and the $1,700 driver assistance package will be the only one that we would recommend you getting.

2020 BMW X3 M40i SUV Engine and Performance

8.0/10

The 2020 BMW X3 M40i houses a powerful and fancy named 3.0L TwinPower Turbo Inline-6 engine, which produces 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. For comparison, that is close to 100 hp more than the regular car and 27 hp more than the previous model year, which should justify its sporting credentials. The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic STEPTRONIC transmission. The throttle response is immediate thanks to the twin-scroll turbo and the transmission is super quick for a torque converter.

The standard xDrive all-wheel-drive system and all this power make this 4,300 pound SUV quite a spritely one. Talking about its acceleration, the 2020 X3 M40i can sprint from a standstill to 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds, which is nothing short of impressive for an SUV. The quarter-mile comes up in just 13.4 seconds and you would find yourself effortlessly accelerating even at triple-digit speeds before you hit the electronically limited 155 mile-an-hour top speed.

The Porsche Macan S and Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 both come in at very high prices. On the other hand, the X3 M40i is priced somewhere in between, which is quite reasonable. X3's performance is one of the leading ones in its class, along with its acceleration, which is almost the same as the GLC 43. In terms of power figures, the GLC 43 produces the highest numbers here. When you consider the price, however, the X3 M40i holds better value for the money.

How well does the 2020 BMW X3 M40i handle?

The X3 is a car that has earned a name for being one of the best handling SUVs in its class and the 2020 BMW X3 M40i pushes that envelope noticeably further. The added weight of the in-line six hanging off the front axles somehow makes this car significantly sharper than its regular counterpart. The stiffer dampers and wider section tires may also be a reason for its pointy nose. Their speed-sensitive steering is not the most feedback-rich but does weigh up nicely as the paces go up.

All-wheel-drive traction is always a bonus when trying to have some fun, especially in an SUV that weighs over 4,300 pounds. You could chuck it into corners at commendable speeds and this thing hooks up pretty well, with only negligible levels of understeer. There is some brake-associated torque vectoring going beneath, but it doesn’t feel all that intrusive. The high-speed straight-line stability is also commendable for an SUV riding 8-inches off the ground and the gain in pace is unperceivable making you constantly check the speedo to confirm that you are doing legal speeds out there.

2020 BMW X3 M40i Braking Performance

The 2020 BMW X3 M40i SUV's braking system has quite an upgrade from the regular X3 SUV, given its significant bump in power and capability. As to that, the X3 M40i gets M performance 4-Piston monoblock calipers at the front and the rear gets 2-piston floating units. Its brake rotors measure 13.7 inches and 13.5 inches, at the front and rear respectively. All this hardware enables the 2020 BMW X3 M40i to come to a complete halt in just 112-feet from 60mph. That said, it does feel a bit too sharp on casual driving. Additionally, it also features a slew of braking assistance features, including an Anti-lock Braking System, Dynamic Brake Control, Cornering Brake Control, and brake pad wear indicators to further enhance its braking ability and improve safety.

The 2020 Audi SQ5 is the best stopper here, posting a 60-0 mph distance of just 104-feet. When comparing the brakes of the Porsche Macan S here with those of its competitors, it has the largest rotors. Even Though it is the heaviest one of the bunch, this advantage enables it to stop at a close 107 feet. The lightweight AMG with the smallest rear rotors takes around 109-feet while the 2020 BMW X3 M40i, with its smallest-in-class front rotors, takes almost 112-feet to come to a complete halt.

2020 BMW X3 M40i SUV Fuel Economy

5.0/10

One of the most notable things about BMWs is that they manufacture some of the most powerful vehicles while keeping them economical. The 2020 X3 M40i also has the highest MPG ratings in its class, giving it an edge over its rivals. The vehicle returns 21 MPG in the city as well as 27 MPG on the highway, which is the highest among its class. With a combined figure of 23 MPG and a decent 17.7-gallon gas tank, you are looking at a realistic range of close to 410 miles from this SUV. Sticking to highways does boost this figure and you can expect close to 480-miles on a single tank of gas while doing so.

The fuel efficiency of the BMW X3 M40i is the best in its segment with no competitor even coming close to it when it comes to individual figures. However, the X3 has a fuel tank capacity of only 17.7 gallons, a capacity that is on the lower side. Despite this, it still manages to come out with the best overall range thanks to its high MPG ratings. The rest of the pack does return almost identical figures, but the Macan S gets a big 19.8-gallon tank which enables it to squeeze out better range than the Audi and the Mercedes.

2020 BMW X3 M40i SUV Interior

The 2020 BMW X3 M340i boasts an opulent cabin that is loaded with great levels of standard tech. This car does feel a notch up in quality and the premium it commands is more or less justified with what is on offers here. For starters, a 12.3-inch Live cockpit and a 10.3-inch infotainment system are a part of the standard package. Wood, metal, and piano black inserts keep up the premium quotient. A Leather-wrapped M-sport steering wheel is also a part of the standard equipment and boasts paddle shifters for added involvement.

The sports front seats offer 10-ways of power adjustment and the entire seating comes covered in standard SensaTec leatherette upholstery. The front seats do feel as copious as any other car in competition but the second row does lack legroom. In addition, the BMW X3 M40i is the only SUV in its class with the largest space behind its seats for cargo measuring 28.7 cubic feet. Other standard features include Remote Keyless Entry, keyless start, three-zone climate control, Day-Night Auto-Dimming Rearview Mirror, Fade-To-Off Interior Lighting, front and rear cupholders, and rear seat thigh support.

As far as space is concerned, the SUVs all share nearly identical numbers in both the front and rear. However, the Audi SQ5 here is slightly ahead in terms of overall space. However, the BMW X3 M40i here is the most practical in terms of cargo space with 28.7 cubic feet. We do not have the exact numbers for Macan S yet, but we expect it to be around the same if not less. Standout interior features of the 2020 BMW X3 M340i:

  • BMW digital instrument cluster

  • M-Sport leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters
  • Remote Keyless Entry/ Keyless start

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The 2020 BMW X3 M40i comes equipped with the latest 10.3-inch display and BMW's iDrive infotainment system with a standard navigation system for this year. The quality of the screen is excellent, and the responsiveness is almost instantaneous. The infotainment system can also be controlled through a rotary knob, which in short is a bit cumbersome. Additionally, the cabin comes with a 205 watt 12-speaker audio system. The unit does support Apple Carplay integration but Android Auto seems to be a miss. Hopefully next year they'll be able to introduce it. Standout infotainment features of the 2020 BMW X3 M40i:

  • 10.3” BMW iDrive infotainment system
  • Apple Carplay
  • USB Ports and Bluetooth Audio Streaming
  • 12-speaker 205 watt Premium sound system
  • BMW Connected App
  • Navigation with Real-Time Traffic information

2020 BMW X3 M40i SUV Exterior

7.0/10

A BMW X3 has always been a nice car to look at and sports a design that offends no one. As for the 2020 BMW X3 M40i, it gets a variety of M Sport styling components to spice things up. To begin with, it has a Shadowline exterior trim that looks fantastic on its body. Additionally, this SUV comes with an M rear spoiler, an aerodynamic kit, M quad tailpipes, and an adaptive LED headlight that is exclusive to this variant.

Its body rides on big 19-inch M double-spoke alloy wheels. Furthermore, the BMW kidney grille at the front is active so that it can open and close if and when your engine needs to be cooled. Features like rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlamps, hands-free tailgate, and a power sunroof are all part of the standard package.

The GLC 43 AMG is a very lightweight SUV and this contributes to its superior acceleration compared to the competition. The X3 M40i is the biggest car in terms of exterior dimensions and this makes it one of the heaviest as well. But on the positive side, you get a decent-sized cabin and the biggest trunk in the competition. The SQ5 finds a perfect balance between size and weight while the Macan S comes in as the smallest car of the bunch and the heaviest too. Standout exterior features of the 2020 BMW X3 M40i :

  • Active Kidney Grille

2020 BMW X3 M40i SUV Safety

8.0/10

It's not unusual for German cars to come equipped with some of the best safety technology available. With regards to safety, the 2020 X3 M40i has an advanced system that incorporates both passive and active safety features, and it's backed up by a chassis that performs quite well structurally. As it is based on the 2020 X3, the ‘Top Safety Pick+’ rating by the IIHS and the 5-star rating by the NHTSA are also applicable to the X3 M40i, which makes it one of the safest SUVs around. Unfortunately, the full suite of driver assistance tech only comes in as an optional package, even at this price. Standout safety features of the 2020 BMW X3 M40i:

  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Driver Monitoring-Alert
  • City Collision Mitigation
  • Frontal Collision Warning
  • Park Distance Control Front And Rear Parking Sensors
  • Automatic Braking Assist

2020 BMW X3 M40i SUV Competition

2020 BMW X3 M40i vs 2020 Mercedes-AMG GLC 43

In comparison to the BMWX3 M40i, the Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 is more expensive. Although the GLC 43 is slightly superior to the X3 M40i in performance, looks, and ride quality. On the other hand, the X3 M40i comes out as the better handler and gets you better fuel economy than the GLC 43. It also offers better practicality thanks to its bigger trunk than the Merc. Nonetheless, if you are looking for better luxury and are alright with the GLC 43's higher price tag, you can continue with it. Otherwise, the BMW X3 M40i is still the favorite choice for the best experience behind the wheel.

2020 BMW X3 M40i vs 2020 Porsche Macan S

If you are looking specifically for a fun-to-drive SUV that is both powerful and unique, there is no second choice other than a Porsche Macan. That said, the BMW's X3 M40i itself is great in terms of performance, but additionally, it also offers greater levels of practicality which is essential, especially for an SUV. The BMW is also the more economical one here despite the higher power output. Even though both SUVs are great in their own right, we think the BMW X3 holds more value here since it checks all the boxes of an SUV at a lower price.

2020 BMW X3 M40i vs 2020 Audi SQ5

Audi and BMW both offer SUVs in the same price range, but the Audi SQ5 fares are slightly less expensive. Although both SUVs offer similar levels of performance, the X3 M40i comes out slightly better in terms of acceleration and fuel economy. Except for that, all the other criteria are nearly identical. But, the Audi SQ5 does boast a slightly higher value proposition here, but since the primary aspect of getting one of these is performance and agility, we would give the upper hand to the 2020 BMW X3 M40i.

2020 BMW X3 M40i SUV Final Verdict

The new BMW X3 M40i certainly ranks among the best performance SUVs that come with an affordable price tag. Even though it comes out as one of the most powerful in its segment, its fuel consumption surprisingly is the lowest in competition. The practicality levels are good and the standard equipment list is impressive. In addition, the cabin offers adequate space for its passengers and fares exceptional when it comes to cargo capacity. All this and a chassis that swanks the agility and poise that is comparable to a hot hatchback, one can never go wrong with choosing the 2020 BMW X3 M40i.
