BMW has been able to target multiple markets and they do carry a large line-up of SUVs, which have been known for their practicality, comfort, and drive. The BMW X5 can be considered the holy grail of BMW SUVs as this midsize SUV began the segment for the brand. The 2023 BMW X5 is really comfortable and spacious with a long list of features available as standard. The car also offers a third row as an option but it would only accommodate kids ass the legroom may be tight for adults. For 2023, the mechanicals and structure of the X5 remain the same as it’s still based on the 4th generation of X5 introduced in 2019. However, the brand will give the exterior a major refresh with redesigned sections of the body along with a few changes for the interior.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The X5 heads up against SUVs like the Mercedes-Benz GLE Class, the Audi Q7, and the Volvo XC90, which are worthy rivals as they carry equally aggressive feature lists and performances. The standard models are split into sDrive 40i and xDrive 40i while the brand also offers a plug-in hybrid variant and two high-performance trims under the M performance line. The price is expected to go up slightly and will start at $61,000. The only key difference between both the standard models is that the xDrive is an all-wheel drive model while the sDrive is driven by just the rear wheels.

Features

The standard BMW X5 is segregated into two trims, namely the sDrive40i, and the xDrive40i which share the exact same specs for most of the parts except for the fact that the xDrive40i comes with an all-wheel drive system. BMW has also rolled out a plug-in hybrid variant of the X5 called the xDrive45e and for the performance junkies, there are two models under the M Performance segment called M50i and the X5 M, which is powered by a twin-turbo V8 producing a whopping 617 horsepower. For 2023, the X5 primarily is a carryover model with a design change but BMW has also made changes to the optional packages offered as the M Sport package will no more offer Vernasca leather and the executive package will no longer include the gesture controls. However, features like premium leather upholstery, four-zone climate control, and upgraded M sport brake are now individual add-ons along with separate packages like the M Sport package, Premium package, Executive package, Climate comfort package, Driving assist professional package, and Parking assistance package.

We Recommend

Both the trims are basically equipped with the same features and tech while they are differentiated just by the drivetrain configuration and since the price difference between both these trims isn’t a lot, we recommend picking the xDrive40i. To make it even better, adding the M Sport package worth $3,300 will make the car look sportier with black exterior accents and bigger tires mounted onto a much more responsive suspension.

Release Date

BMW hasn’t confirmed the final dates yet but the new X5 is expected to be launched in early 2023

Engine and Performance

The core models of the X5 come equipped with a turbocharged 3.0 L 6-cylinder engine that produces 335 horsepower and 331 lb-ft of torque. The major advantage the xDrive 40 brings in with the all-wheel drive system is the off-road capability. The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission that has no lags and channels power with no effort to the wheels. The drive can be further tweaked by opting for the M Sport package that will stiffen the suspension slightly and increase the response. The car is said to get from 0-60 mph in just 5.3 seconds, making it one of the quickest non-performance-oriented SUVs on the market. The plug-in hybrid variant carries a good power bump and makes a total of 389 hp while the M Performance variants make 523 hp and 600 hp. The 2023 BMW X5 has the ability to tow 7,200 ponds if needed.

All the rivals come equipped with a smaller 4-cylinder engine while the BMW X5 carries 2 extra cylinders. This totally justified the higher price and also helps the car reach 60 mph in over a second quicker than all its rivals. However, the top speed is uniform for all the cars as it’s limited, but by upgrading the tires on the X5 to performance tires and an increased speed limiter, the car is capable of hitting a top speed of 151 mph.

2023 BMW X5 Ride and Handling

As far as casual city drives are concerned, the BMW X5 is very easy to handle and quickly adaptable with the gearshifts always being smooth and quick. However, when pushing the car to try having a fun drive, the X5 doesn’t seem to be very impressive unless the drive mode is put to Sport mode. When the car is in Comfort, Adaptive, or Eco Pro mode, the vehicle seems to be overly soft and floaty with the steering feeling disconnected from the car and barely any response from the suspensions while taking a corner.

2023 BMW X5 Braking Performance

The 2023 BMW X5 does come with a strong set of disc brakes on all four wheels that are very responsive and ample enough to stop the car in no time. The X5 also comes standard with a brake assist system and cornering brake control to make driving the car completely safe. However, users have an option for an upgrade with the M sport brakes available as an individual option. These brakes are designed to cool down much quicker, making them perform with the maximum ability most of the time.

Even though the braking distances haven’t been revealed for most of the cars, it is safe to say that the brake setup on the BMW is within the ideal size even though the Mercedes-Benz and the Audi carry a slightly larger unit. The Audi Q7 manages to stop in just 117 feet, which is impressive, especially for a vehicle of its size, putting the BMW under pressure.

Fuel Economy

The fuel economy on the 2023 BMW X5 isn’t anything special and stands in the average figures for its segment. The average fuel efficiency of 23 mpg isn’t all that bad considering the larger engine the X5 is equipped with. People looking for a better range and figure in terms of fuel consumption can opt for the plug-in hybrid variant.

BMW has managed to push out similar numbers to Mercedes-Benz and even outperform the Audi despite the fact that they carry a smaller engine. The Mercedes-Benz offers a better total range due to its larger tank but the BMW X5 offers a decent figure which is almost similar to that found in the GLE-Class. However, the individual fuel efficiency is highest in Volvo

Interior

The interior space on the X5 is generous enough with seating space ample enough to keep adults comfortable. However, the optional third row is strictly for kids as the leg room available is really cramped for anyone above 5’6” of height. The occupants are welcomed by a cabin that comprises high-quality materials and plenty of techs and charging ports. The cabin look and feel can be customized depending on the options chosen which also includes an Alcantara headliner and control knobs made using glass. Cabin trims made using fine aluminum and wooden materials come standard on the X5. Things just don’t stop there as the cabin experience is made premium by the ambient lighting that comes as standard and can be customized based on the user's preference. The driver’s seat comes with a memory function along with power adjustability, making it comfortable for drivers of almost any size. Users intending to push the car further to make it feel like a high-end luxury vehicle can add on an upgraded set of front seats that are ventilated and carry massaging function

A major advantage that both the Audi and Volvo hols is the fact that they come with a third row as standard that can accommodate adults for a short drive. However, both the BMW and Mercedes-Benz carry a lesser passenger hold. In terms of cargo space, Volvo takes a massive lead with BMW and Mercedes-Benz offering similar space.

Some standout interior features on the 2023 BMW X5 include

  • SensaTec or a premium grade leather upholstery.
  • Power adjustable driver seat with memory.
  • Heated front seats.
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel with heating function.
  • Optional third row.
  • Ambient lighting.
  • Alcantara headliner.

How intuitive is the 2023 BMW X5 infotainment system?

For 2023, the offerings on the inside remain the same but the layout will have a slight refresh. The users are welcomed by two massive 12.3-inch displays that act as the instrument cluster and infotainment screen that runs on the latest iDrive software plugged into a 10-speaker HiFi stereo system. The infotainment supports both Apple CarPlay as well as Android Auto and those who think traditional buttons and knobs for controls are boring can opt for the gesture controls but they are less intuitive and take a while to get used to.

Some of the standout infotainment features on the 2023 BMW X5 are

  • 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
  • 12.3 -inch touchscreen.
  • Apply CarPlay and Android Auto.
  • Wireless charging pad.
  • Navigation system.
  • 16-speaker stereo by Harman Kardon/ 20-speaker Bowers and Wilkins stereo
  • 360-degree camera.
Exterior

This is where the 2023 BMW X5 will see noticeable changes as the exterior design will be refreshed with much sportier and smoother lines than before. Both the bumpers will receive a redesign along with the headlights and taillights. The 19-inch V-spoke wheels will wear all-season tires with the option of upgrading it to 20-inch as a part of the M Sport package. Another change this package brings is the addition of exterior trims with a complete chrome delete to make the vehicle look sportier. Another feature that comes standard on the exterior is the active grille shutters that open depending on the vehicle’s speed and engine temperature to allow avoid engine overheating. Adding to the sportiness of the vehicle is a sharp roof spoiler. Even though the entry and exit in the X5 are easy, an aluminum running board can be added on for an additional $400.

The Audi Q7 is the longest SUV here but all the vehicles share a very similar wheelbase. The BMW does carry a good ground clearance of 8.7 inches but both the Audi and Volvo offer more, making them less likely to scrape the bottoms while off-roading.

Some of the standout exterior features include

  • 19-inch or 20-inch alloy wheels.
  • Active grille shutters
  • Running board.
  • LED automatic high beam.
  • Power folding heated exterior mirror.
  • Roof spoiler.
Safety

The 2023 BMW X5 hasn’t been rayed on NHTSA or IIHS yet but sing the structure and platform of the car remain the same as the previous year, it can be considered safe as the 2022 model was rated “Good” by IIHS and also received an overall 4-star rating on NHTSA. The car also comes with an array of safety tech and features that include driver assistance, blind spot detection, lane departure warning, and many more that can be added through optional packages.

Some of the standout safety features available with the 2023 BMW X5 are

  • Active blind spot detection.
  • Lane departure warning.
  • Automated parking system.
  • Active cruise control.
  • BMW assist eCall.
  • Emergency stop assist.
Competition

2023 BMW X5 vs 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE Class

There really isn’t much of a difference between both these SUVs and even though the cargo space on the Mercedes is bigger, the BMW for most of the part takes the lead. Where the X5 takes the lead is in terms of power as BMW offers a larger engine. Also, BMW offers much more customization options by providing a long list of optional features and packages.

2023 BMW X5 vs 2023 Audi Q7

The 2023 Audi Q7 feels like a much more engaging SUV to drive but that can be fixed by opting for the M Performance pack on the BMW X5 and also by turning the Sport mode on. The key difference here is the fact that the Q7 comes with 3 rows from the factory while the optional third row on the BMW is way too cramped. It all comes down to the number of passenger hold require. Otherwise, the BMW is a better value as it performs well and puts out good results in terms of the cargo hold as well as fuel economy.

2023 BMW X5 vs 2023 Volvo XC90

Similar is the case with the 2023 Volvo XC90 as this car offers space for 7 passengers straight from the factory and can even accommodate adults in the last row, unlike the X5 with its optional seats. The Volvo isn’t all that powerful and can feel bland in terms of the drive character while the BMW packs in the highest power in the group, making it the driver’s choice.

Final Verdict

The changes on the 2023 X5 are very limited but the car is a great deal, especially for people seeking performance and daily drivability in one package. The X5 does come with just two trims under the core model but BMW has worked on the additional option that users can opt for in order to make the car even better both in terms of performance as well as comfort. The BMW X5 with its all-wheel drive system is even capable of hitting off-road patches without any issue and the major reason why you should pick the BMW over its alternatives for this segment is the fact that all the other cars are underpowered and come equipped with tiny engines that carry a similar gas range and mileage to that found in the BMW.
