We Recommend

Go for the x35d version of this German automobile marvel and ride in a ride that is part performance part utility and part luxury. This iteration of the X5 does not compromise on any of the aspects that make a BMW, a BMW.

Engine and Transmission

The car under scrutiny holds the middle ground in the scorecards and delivers 413 lb-ft of power with only a 255 hp engine. The excellently balanced inline 6 cylinder is the saving grace of this vehicle in this aspect.

The Range Rover comes on top in this segment but as the saying goes You may have won the fight but the war is still at large. Lagging behind by 23 ponies the Grand Cherokee comes in at a second position with 420 lb-ft. The Rover borrowing heavily from its off-roading bloodline is the victor in this battle.

Acceleration

The x35d comes equipped with a twin turbo diesel I-6 3.0L engine that delivers 255 hp of power whilst generating 413 lb-ft of torque. This impactful engine manages to drive the BMW from 0-60 is 6s flat which is impressive considering the weight of the behemoth. This also translates to the fastest quarter mile time of 14.6s among the bunch.

X5 35d manages to edge past its competitor with the nearest one falling short by more than a second. The numbers speak for themselves when ranking these machines and the BMW emerges as the contender supreme.

Ride and handling

BMW has set the benchmark high and fails to deliver on its own terms, the whole driving experience makes the driver yearn for more than it can deliver or cater for.

Without the adaptive or dynamic suspension, the car seems a little bumpy on the not so perfect roads at low speeds. At the other end of the speedometer, it is a stable, firm and a joy to ride. The steering isn't very communicative and is lightly weighted which only adds to its woes. Body roll is another issue that can be added to the short list of fallacies

The Grand Cherokee offers a better riding experience but only if we are being very picky about the ride. We would recommend getting the adaptive or dynamic suspension with the BMW to elevate the whole experience to a different plane.

Braking

The German is equipped with 13.7-inch disc brakes in the front and 12.6- inch in the back. The brakes manage to bring the car to a halt the car in 178 feet when going from 70-0 mph, which is impressive, to say the least.

2018 BMW X5 diesel SUV Fuel Economy

The German auto maker's largest SUV offers a mileage of 23 mpg in the city and 29 on the highway, making it a great option for day to day commute. Add the luxurious interiors of the car in the mix and you get a cabin on wheels that is surprisingly light on the wallet.

Avoiding the gas guzzler tag by a mile the BMW offers the highest combined mileage among its competitors. The competition fails to surpass the beemer. The Land Rover and the Jeep Grand Cherokee come off as more fuel hungry which really isn't appreciated.

2018 BMW X5 diesel SUV Interior

cInside, the cabin features high-quality materials with soft plastics on the dash and plenty of padding where your arms fall. Hard plastics are nowhere to be found in the X5's cabin, and everything feels well put together. - Motor Trend

Seating and Comfort

The interiors of the car are sufficient enough and may not be to everyone's liking, the almost bland and simplistic styling might drive away some customers. If simplicity is your thing this might intrigue your simplicity sensors. It has a no-nonsense control layout

The first and second rows are spacious but the optional third row should come with a warning that it's not meant for adults. The cramped row feels forced and is an addition that we are glad is optional.

With as many as 20 adjustments available for the front seats even the pickiest of people will find a seating arrangement to their liking.

With the aforementioned dimensions, we think that all of them have similar spacing but the BMW lacks the poshness of the other two. The interior feels dated and rather too plain for the price point.

Cargo volume

With 35 ft. cube of room the x5 will never you and your luggage down, fold the 2nd row of seats and you get 77 ft. cube which will accommodate BBQ and picnic equipment and goodies.

Miles ahead of its rivals this Diesel guzzling beast is the best for weekend getaways with your family and friends. The large cargo space allows you to carry more stuff for your trips. Add this to the great mileage and you get the perfect vehicle for cruising and vacationing.

2018 BMW X5 diesel SUV Exterior

The X5's exterior is the definition of a BMW crossover, a look that the automaker has perfected over the last decade. If you've been to an upscale shopping mall, you've seen some variation on the theme. The Car Connection

Dimensions and weight

The x5 35d looks huge just not only on paper but in real life too. This fact is bolstered by the car's measurement. Longest amongst its pool of rivals the BMW easily takes the title of the Giant of the giants here.

On the lighter side of things, the BMW, in theory, should be better in driving and maneuverability. This isn't always the case as the BMW proves its critics wrong.

Maximum Towing capacity

With the Land Rover and the Jeep Grand Cherokee offering more lugging power the BMW falls appallingly short on this front and is not even in the same league as the others.

If towing is part of the reason why you're buying a new SUV then BMW is not the one for you. The Rover has the towing capacity of 7716lbs which is enough to pull up with a trailer at your next outing.

2018 BMW X5 diesel SUV Safety

This Cabin on wheels does come with more than just a lock and key that might be used to secure your workspace. The crafty people at this German outfit have prepared your ride for the worst and the best experiences, thus the safety features are a long list of things mentioned below.

  • Anti-lock brakes

2018 BMW X5 diesel SUV Competition

2018 Land Rover Range Rover Sport SE vs 2018 BMW X5 35D

The Land Rover SE isn't far behind in all aspects when compared head to head, but the steeper price point for a car that's lagging behind in many aspects does not make sense. It has the highest torque on the charts even after having the same horsepower as the X5 which speaks volume for its efficiency friendly engine.

2018 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE ECO DIESEL vs 2018 BMW X5 35D

The cheapest of the lot the Jeep punches way above its weight. A threat to the X5's claim on the throne the Grand Cherokee surpasses the BMW in a few parameters but as a whole fails to fare better than the X5. The BMW scores points where it matters and is a better performer than the Cherokee in parameters like Cargo Space, Acceleration, and Fuel consumption.

2018 BMW X5 diesel SUV Final Verdict

A little out of touch with times but laced with a classic performance meets luxury package the BMW X5 35d reigns supreme in this competition. The perfect vehicle for day to day cruising and commuting, the BMW wins accolades for combining great cargo volume and mileage.

With a spacious cabin which makes it feel like an office on wheels the whole riding experience except a little on the handling front was pleasant and joyful in its entirety.
