Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2021 BMW X5 is available in three trim variants out of which the M50i is unmistakably the sportiest one. Donning the M badge, the X5 M50i only means business every time it hits the road. The X5 M50i’s prices start at $84,095 and it competes with the 2021 Porsche Cayenne S, the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE53 SUV, and the 2021 Audi SQ7 Premium Plus.

2021 BMW X5 M50i SUV Features

The 2021 BMW X5 comes in three different trims namely the xDrive40i, sDrive40i, and the M50i out of which the M50i is the sportiest and costliest variant on offer. There are significant changes between these trim levels and that is reflected in the pricing as well. While the base sDrive40i trim will cost you around $60,000, the M50i will cost you over $84,000.

Which trim should you buy?

Choosing the right trim can be confusing at times for customers but BMW has kept the concept of trim levels pretty simple for the X5. The X5 range starts with the sDrive40i which is a standard X5 but with RWD. Add a couple of thousand dollars and you get the xDrive40i with AWD. But if you are a proper petrolhead and are looking for an X5 with all the practicality but with a powerful powertrain and dynamic drive quality, then the M50i is the one to go for without a doubt. The M50i offers some of the best in class features along with the famed driving dynamics that all BMWs with an ‘M’ badge offer.

2021 BMW X5 M50i SUV Engine and Performance

The 2021 BMW X5 M50i stays true to the ‘M’ badge and doesn’t disappoint at all. Its 4.4 L twin-turbocharged V8 engine produces 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft. of torque. With serious power figures like these, one can make out that the X5 M50i is no joke. All of the 553 lb-ft. of torque is made available at just 1800 rpm thanks to the twin-turbo setup and clever engineering practices. The transmission system mated to the engine is an 8-speed automatic system that promises seamless shifts right when you need them.

2021 BMW X5 M50i Engine Bay

The powertrain along with the all-wheel-drive drivetrain system that comes as standard helps the X5 M50i propel from 0-60 mph in less than 4 seconds which is clearly supercar territory. Add to it the clever driving aids and modes that make the drive interesting and dynamic and you get an SUV that can pretty much satisfy all your needs.

The powerful engine paired with one of the best transmission and drivetrain systems in the industry helps launch the X5 M50i from 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds and do a quarter-mile in 12.7 seconds. The top speed is around 177 mph which is pretty decent for a car of its caliber.

The 2021 BMW X5 M50i proves to be one of the cheapest options in the rivalry while being one of the most sensible options to go for considering the power and torque figures along with the other performance figures such as the 0-60 mph and quarter-mile timings. The Mercedes-AMG does offer to be the cheapest option in the segment though, but the power figures are clearly lesser than what the X5 M50i offers.

How well does the 2021 BMW X5 M50i handle?

The X5 M50i proves that it’s not just any ordinary SUV. It handles in a way how every ‘M’ car is supposed to handle. Dynamic drive quality, corner-friendly handling, and great feedback from the steering system are key attributes associated with BMW’s high-performance cars and these qualities are truly evident in the X5 M50i as well.

The ride is stiffer than what you would experience in an xDrive40i and the braking certainly feels better as well. What the X5 M50i truly offers is the ability to carve through corners and various kinds of terrains in a very poised and sharp way.

Braking Performance

The 2021 BMW X5 M50i is neither the lightest nor the heaviest SUV in the segment. It has an excellent weight distribution that helps it get better braking performance.

For a car of its size, it does offer a good amount of bite and confidence when it comes to braking but the figures on brake size and the 60-0 stopping distance are not yet available.

The X5 M50i does pack some serious stopping power but the figures are not available to compare it with its rivals in a better way.

2021 BMW X5 M50i SUV Fuel Economy

The 2021 BMW X5 M50i delivers decent fuel economy figures considering the power output of its powertrain unit. It delivers a combined fuel economy of 18 mpg and multiplying that with the fuel capacity of 21.9 gallons, and the combined range lies around the 395 miles mark which is neither the best nor the worst.

The X5 M50i has a decent fuel economy but the fuel capacity certainly could have been better as all its rivals have bigger fuel tanks helping them to deliver more range than the X5. The 2021 Porsche Cayenne S certainly seems to offer the best fuel economy and range in the segment making it a very favorable option.

2021 BMW X5 M50i SUV Interior

The X5 M50i’s interior is one of the best interiors in the segment for sure. The interior layout is well thought after and has a host of elements that add to the premium feel.

The dashboard layout is bold yet subtle. With the new HVAC vents and the dashboard layout that are present in the current generation BMW cars, the interior feels fresh and modernistic. The dashboard surface and the entire interior is clad in Vernasca leather upholstery which makes it look regal and comfy. The dashboard hosts a large infotainment screen and has had a minimalistic approach towards buttons. The center console also has buttons for certain controls as well as a decently large armrest with storage space underneath.

2021 BMW X5 M50i Front Seats

The front seats come with ventilation and heating functions and have 14-way power adjustability. They offer really good lumbar and thigh support and a massage function comes as an optional extra as well. The Panoramic moonroof adds airiness and light to the cabin making the cabin feel even bigger.

The second-row seats are 40-20-40 split-bench seats that are really comfortable and plush. There is more than an adequate amount of legroom and headroom in the rear making it comfortable for three people to be seated.

The X5 also has a standard cargo capacity of 33.9 cu-ft. and it can be increased by folding the second-row seats to a really excellent 72.3 cu-ft. of cargo capacity. The trunk opening is tall and wide and has features such as a hands-free trunk lid opening and remote access.

2021 BMW X5 M50i SUV Competition

2021 BMW X5 M50i vs. 2021 Porsche Cayenne S

The closest rival to the X5 certainly has to be the Cayenne as it packs the performance and features that give the X5 a really challenging competition. The Cayenne S costs $2,000 more than the X5 and certainly offers better driving dynamics and fuel economy.

2021 Porsche Cayenne S

But the X5 M50i’s fuel economy isn’t bad either and the taller and higher exterior bodywork and the larger wheelbase help it to offer more interior and storage capacity for sure.

2021 BMW X5 M50i vs. 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE53 SUV

The GLE53 is certainly one of the cheapest cars in the segment and that do by a great margin. It offers a powertrain with a mild electric assist that helps in downsizing the engine and reducing emissions.

2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE53 SUV

It isn’t as powerful or exciting to ride as the X5 M50i and that makes us question if it is really worth giving a preference to the GLE53 AMG if it doesn’t actually carry over the true essence of being an AMG car.

2021 BMW X5 M50i vs. 2021 Audi SQ7 Premium Plus

The SQ7 might look a bit bizarre in the segment due to the fact that it offers 2 extra seats compared to the rest of the cars. When it comes to practicality, the SQ7 clearly owns the spot as it offers more interior and cargo space.

2021 Audi SQ7 Premium Plus

But when it comes to the driving dynamics and the price point of view, the X5 M50i seems like a bargain.

2021 BMW X5 M50i SUV Final Verdict

The X5 has always been a favorite in the SUV lineup of BMW by enthusiasts all over the world due to its key traits- great performance, practical interiors, and energetic ride quality. All these things are amplified to be a notch higher in the M50i.

Considering the price point of view and the number of features that come with it, it is no doubt that the 2021 BMW X5 M50i is one of the best value for money cars out there.
