Best power and all over performance and reliability.

Since everyone’s expectation from a luxury SUV are not the same, one can select a trim depending on what is expected from the car such as powerful diesel engine with high horsepower, traction, torque, fuel economy, or a eco based fueling system., various trims can be selected according to one’s needs. It is to be noted that the 40e is also by far the least expensive petrol car in the X5 range, undercutting the xDrive50i. But for the ‘best in all’ kind of experience, we recommend BMW X5 xDrive 50i & X5 M Sport Design.

The drive weighs 2,230kg & is equipped with 2.0-litre twin-turbocharged engine and addition of an 111bhp electric motor built into the drive’s gearbox. The drive uses a quick-shifting eight-speed automatic gearbox. Manual shifts done using steering-wheel mounted paddles.

Volvo and BMW use downsized four cylinder for long-range fuel economy to rival a conventional diesel. The BMW’s is turbocharged to the tune of 242bhp, the Volvo’s both turbocharged and supercharged. Both SAVs have around 9.0kWh of lithium ion high-voltage drive battery. The BMW and Mercedes GLE 550e both offer similar powertrain options, ranging from turbocharged V-6 and V-8 engines and plug-in hybrid variants.

BMW deploys its battery’s electrical energy through one electric drive motor producing up to 111bhp and 184lbft coupled with the 2.0L Twin Power Turbo reaching 0-60mph in 6.5 seconds. The Volvo can use both its main electric drive motor and its lesser starter-generator motor to drive the wheels, making for up to 133bhp and 280lbft of electric power and takes 7.3 seconds to reach 0-60mph.The GLE43, with a 432hp twin-turbo V-6 and 7-speed automatic can get to 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds. The BMW is powerful and agile even with the lower torque and horse power, and carries around the beast with ease and confidence.

Ride and Handling

The BMW X5 xDrive40e iPerformance combines the super-efficient eDrive plug-in hybrid drive with the intelligent and variable BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system. Intelligent energy management regulates the efficient interplay between the electric motor, the engine and the all-wheel drive system.

The Mercedes is equipped with the AGILITY CONTROL ® suspension system which guarantees smooth rise on bumpy roads and an optional AIRMATIC ® suspension system which automatically adjusts in height in order to reduce aerodynamic drag and improve overall stability. The GLE is more off-road-oriented than the BMW, with a maximum ground clearance of up to 11 inches and a fording depth of 23 inches. BMW feels nimble through mid to large curves, but its big body would roll to a more uncomfortable degree in acute corners.

In the open road, Comfort driving mode’s mild energy recapture and less regenerative braking pairs well with Auto eDrive’s intelligent powertrain management. During coasting and braking, The brake pedal isn’t overly eager with its regenerative braking, it feels average for a hybrid vehicle in gentle and aggressive driving. But considering the 5220lbs curb weight and hefty aerodynamics, the BMW’s braking is well equipped and suitable for long stretches and through mid-curves.

The BMW’s breaks are more responsive and precise in comparison with the Volvo, given the brakes has to bear an extra 115lbs. The Mercedes’s brakes dimensions should have been designed more intelligently.

One of the main reasons people opt for a PHEV over a regular SAV is because of its fuel efficiency. BMW 40e does not disappoint us with regards to MPGe’s. BMW X5 xDrive iPerformance runs 13 miles in electric-only mode, and gives a mileage of 24 MPGe strictly from the gas engine and a combined officially claimed fuel efficiency of 56MPGe.

Volvo runs about 17MPEGe on the electric alone and has a combined MPGe which is similar to the BMW in real life scenario. The Mercedes on the other hand can run only about 10MPGe on electric alone & gives a combined MPGe of about 43, which is not bad considering what it tips on the weigh scale. Considering that the BMW can give a 14MPGe on electric alone and a good combined MPGe as well, also priced $3000 lower than the 10MPGe electric only giving Mercedes, it’s a good option when fuel economy is of the most importance.

The BMW X5 doesn’t ask you to make any compromises in terms of spacing for both you and your cargo. It’s got a tall roof, rack, and a long wheelbase, and it makes the most of each of these attributes in providing a respectable amount of passenger and cargo room. In carving out space for the X5 40e iPerformance 9.2 kilowatt-hour lithium battery, there’s a little less cargo room available about four cubic feet as compared to a non-hybrid version of the X5, for a total of 72.5 cubes with the rear seat folded down. The third row seating too is lost. There’s a split tailgate hanging out at the rear of the vehicle too.

The BMW xDrive40e iPerformance is a large SUV but handles just like a sedan. The suspension is tight and firm for the road and different drive modes see it soften up or stiffen up more, situation dependent, the Dynamic Damper Control works fast and seamlessly. Steering feedback is the same as biggest SUVs, it’s quite lacking in feel but it’s still sharp and precise.

The power from the electric-hybrid is immediate and there’s enough torque available to pull the car when completely loaded. Active roll stabilization and Dynamic Performance Control keep the SUV planted, the latter distributing power to the best wheel of the all-wheel drive for maximum traction.

Exterior Features:

  • Star Spoke Orbit Gray light alloy wheels (Style 449), 19 x 9.0; and 255/50 run-flat all-season tires
  • Xenon Adaptive Headlights with dynamic auto-leveling, Corona headlight-rings and Cornering Lights
  • LED fog lights
  • Power-folding, heated side mirrors
  • Satin Aluminum roof rails
  • Roof spoiler with center brake light
  • Silver matte exhaust tips
  • Satin Aluminum exterior trim
  • Non-metallic paint
  • Air Curtains and Air Breather system
  • High-gloss black Aero Blades

Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with extended functionality stabilizes the vehicle as soon as any skidding motion is detected. Its extended functionality includes Cornering Brake Control (CBC), the hill starts and braking assistant, brake drying and braking readiness. For even more athletic driving, the Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) function allows increased wheel slip. The optional Hill Descent Control (HDC) in the xDrive models is a system which, when activated, ensures that the vehicle can negotiate the steepest downhill runs automatically and safely at just above walking pace, without the driver having to brake. This along with a ton of other safety features makes sure that the passengers feel safe at all situations.

2018 BMW X5 plug-in hybrid SUV Competition

The BMW X5 boasts a solid set of powertrains and features that move the sedan toward the top of any list of luxury Sports Activity Vehicle. The X5 xDrive40e has 2.2 cubic feet more passenger volume than the GLE. The X5 xDrive40e’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid produces 6 more horsepower and 59 lbs.-ft. more torque than the GLE

The Volvo XC90 is comfortable, capable, and only whispers its virtue, reinterpreting the Volvo brand as quiet sophistication in comfort, style, and efficiency. The Volvo XC90 is elegant but low-key on the outside, but its interior uses simple Scandinavian design and elegant materials to redefine luxury in a soothing, sensible way. The Volvo XC90 is elegant but low-key on the outside, but its interior uses simple Scandinavian design and elegant materials to redefine luxury in a soothing, sensible way.

The Mercedes GLE has .1 inches less front legroom and 2 inches less front shoulder room than the X5 not allowing quicker loading of small packages and also the GLE’s rear cargo window doesn’t open.

2018 BMW X5 plug-in hybrid SUV Final Verdict

The hybrid’s drivetrain makes use of an admittedly-tiny 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, matched with a single electric motor. You’ll never feel that the acceleration is sourced from a drivetrain with two fewer cylinders in comparison with other trims. And just like any other BMW, the hybrid too is elegantly designed with ton of features giving you a feel of luxury. Despite the 9.2Kw battery being fitted in the cargo and taking up some space, it still offers a spacious cargo. The battery when fully charged for 3 hours can pull the car for 14MPGe.

Finally, it all comes down to game of needs and wants, and the BMW offers a fuel efficient, sporty PHEV. It’s more suitable for commutes and highway drives, and does not perform impressively in the off-road area. If this is what you are looking for, then this BMW’s Hybrid is your best choice.
