There has been an evident rise in popularity of the SUV Coupe segment in recent years and the BMW X6 has always been a major catalyst when it comes to the SUV Coupe popularity. In fact, the X6 gained so much popularity that it became a staple part of the celebrity garages worldwide to the point where there’s even a song made on the X6! Due to its rising popularity in the market, other manufacturers too started introducing their own kinds of SUV Coupes and BMW soon started introducing ‘M’ models of the X6 to be a step above everyone in the segment.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2020 BMW X6 M’s looks might be a topic for debate as there seems to be an equal number of admirers and haters for it. But the X6 surely is a golden egg for the BMW franchise as it gained popularity and brought in results in a very short time and the X6 M is just the icing on the cake. The 2020 X6 M is available in a base as well as a ‘Competition’ trim with prices starting at $106,700 for the base variant while the Competition will cost you $118,600. It competes with the Porsche Cayenne Coupe Turbo, the Audi RS Q8, and the Maserati Levante GTS.

The X6 M gets a facelift and some other important updates that make it feel like a much more premium and modern SUV Coupe compared to its older versions. The whole exterior now gets a major update in terms of design where the lights, bumpers, and pretty much everything have changed and become bolder, more aggressive, and stealthier. The interior design layout has been picked up straight from the X5 and there is a lot of resemblance between the two.

The engine gets a tune with an increase in power and there are a plethora of features and creature comforts that now come as standard in the base X6 M. The X6 M Competition on the other hand adds a flair of luxury and serious performance bits like M Sport exhaust system as well as 22-inch alloy wheels along with an exclusive track mode as standard for an exhilarating experience.

Which Trim Should You Buy?

The base X6 M trim level seems to be more than adequate considering the price range and features that you get with it. The Competition might certainly be a good choice for people wanting some extra performance parts and premium bits and pieces but it seems too costly.

Engine and Performance

The 2020 BMW X6 M comes with a slightly tuned version of the 4.4 L twin-turbocharged V8 engine that used to come with the previous X6 M models. The engine now produces a total of 600 horsepower and 553 lb-ft. of torque making it one of the most powerful engine units in the segment. The performance that this engine has on offer is truly impressive as it has enough power to move mountains and gives you a very quick and sharp throttle response giving justice to the ‘M’ badge. It feels like an M5 inside an X6 M’s body with the way the engine and the whole SUV responds.

The 8-speed automatic ZF transmission unit with paddle shifters adds a major chunk of excitement to the driving experience with its quick and aggressive shifts when you need it. The xDrive AWD system helps put all of the power and torque efficiently on the tarmac while you accelerate away. The X6 M can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds while it can cover a quarter-mile distance in 12.2 seconds. It has a top speed of 180 mph.

The fact that the X6 M is the cheapest SUV in the segment makes it more appealing to potential customers as it delivers the best performance figures that you can find in the segment. The Audi RS Q8 does seem to be a major competition to the X6 M when it comes to performance, but considering the price tags, the X6 M feels like a bargain. There is an even powerful version of Levante- The Trofeo trim. It puts out 40hp more but that escalates the price point very quickly making it at least 45 grand expensive than the BMW.

How well does the 2020 BMW X6 M handle?

Don’t let the tall stance fool you into thinking that the X6 M might not handle well. It stays true to the ‘M’ badge and is arguably one of the best-handling SUVs on sale in the segment. It gets an impressive sports-tuned suspension setup along with a double-wishbone suspension setup in the front and active anti-roll bars both in the front and rear. These make sure that the X6 M always feels stable and confident around corners and during straight-line pulls. The fact that you won’t feel anybody roll explains the engineering prowess of BMW and the X6 M never fails to impress you while you try to push it harder and harder.

Braking Performance

The BMW X6 M continues to impress you with its sporty characteristics and confidence-inspiring braking performance. The front brake rotors measure 15.6 inches in diameter while the rear ones measure 15.2-inch. With a curb weight of just over the 5,000 lbs. mark, the 2020 X6 M has the right kind of braking power and system to slow it down. The feel and feedback from the brake pedal are impressive and add to the confidence of the driver which reminds you that this is no ordinary X6. The X6 M can decelerate from 60 to 0 mph in just 106 feet as well.

Since the Maserati Levante GTS is the lightest SUV in the segment and has a good set of brakes and braking systems as well to support itself, it has the lowest stopping distance of 105 feet in the segment. The Porsche Cayenne Coupe Turbo too has a remarkable stopping distance of just 105 feet. Audi RS Q8 has the largest front brake rotors in the lot but its heavy curb weight does affect its braking performance a bit.

Fuel Economy

Fuel economy and range are some of the few drawbacks that the 2020 BMW X6 M has. It offers a combined fuel economy of 15 mpg while the fuel economy in the city and highway are 13 and 18 mpg respectively. These seem to be some of the lowest figures in the segment.

Despite having a moderately large fuel tank capacity of 22.4 gal., it fails to provide you with a good driving range when compared to its rivals. It offers a combined range of 336 miles.

Range (City/Highway/Combined, in Miles)

Compared to the Maserati Levante GTS, the X6 M does return a better range thanks to the large fuel tank. But it certainly could have had better fuel economy like its Porsche and Audi rivals to be on top of the segment. Cayenne Turbo squeezes slightly more fuel economy as it comes with a smaller engine than the X6 M. It also has the largest fuel tank in the lot which puts the driving range well over 450 miles on the highway.

The interior of the 2020 BMW X6 M is truly a mesmerizing one and has been derived from the X5. The interior elements exude luxury as well as a sporty feel with some intriguing features in the form of ambient lighting, carbon-fiber trim inserts, and more. The dashboard looks aesthetically appealing with the exclusive yellow and black dual-tone upholstery option that comes with the X6 M. The wide range of colors that you could select for the ambient lighting as well as the aluminum and carbon-fiber trim inserts are some of the best aesthetic additions to the X6 M’s interior. Features like the dual-zone front and rear automatic climate control unit as well as a panoramic sunroof and Alcantara trim options add comfort and exclusivity to the interior.

The heated 14-way adjustable sports front seats inside the X6 M are arguably some of the best seats in the segment in terms of comfort and confidence. The seats have leather and optional Alcantara upholstery with hexagonal stitching and exclusive color highlights that come with the X6 M. The second-row seats are arranged in a 40-20-40 split-bench seat setup and have the same type of design and stitching options found in the front seats. The second row might seem a bit cramped and the headroom has been compromised to get the sloping roof ‘Coupe’ look on the outside. The X6 M offers a standard cargo capacity of 20.5 cu-ft. but it can be extended up to 54 cu-ft. The X6 M gets the coupe-like hatchback door meaning that the second-row seats can be folded completely to increase cargo space.

Although there isn't any data available about the X6 M, Cayenne Coupe Turbo, and the Levante GTS’ interior volume, it is safe to say that the X6 M can comfortably accommodate five people inside it. The X6 M’s cargo capacity might be small compared to its rivals, but it has a decently spacious interior that can also be utilized as cargo space.

Standout interior features:

  • Dual-zone automatic front and rear climate control unit
  • Heated 14-way power-adjustable front seats with leather/Alcantara upholstery
  • Exclusive hexagon stitching
  • ‘M’ highlights on the seats
  • Alcantara heated sports steering wheel with multimedia and cruise controls
  • Piano black and optional carbon-fiber trim inserts

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The X6 M comes with the latest iDrive infotainment system along with a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display unit. The screen has an array of multimedia and other controls onboard. The standard audio system includes a 600-watt 16-speaker audio system and an optional Harman/Kardon surround sound system as well.

As far as connectivity features go, the X6 M gets Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth phone, and audio connectivity as well as 4G WiFi internet access. The only drawback in the whole infotainment package seems to be the absence of Android Auto.

Standout infotainment features:

  • In-built navigation
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • BMW iDrive infotainment system
  • 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display unit with trackpad controller
  • 16-speaker premium sound system
  • Optional Harman/Kardon surround sound system
  • Bluetooth phone connectivity
  • 4G WiFi internet access
  • Apple CarPlay

The BMW X6 M gets a major update when it comes to the exterior design layout and features. The X6 M gets all-new LED projector headlamps along with sharper LED daytime running lights and an aggressive bumper in the front that signifies that it’s an ‘M’ car.

The tail lamps are also all-new LED tail lamps which might be a topic for debate as enthusiasts are trying to get used to the eccentric design ideology that BMW has put in for the tail lamps. The all-new grille along with a set of 21-inch double-spoke M bi-color wheels certainly add a fresh as well as an exciting aesthetic appeal to it.

The X6 M might have a decent ground clearance for an SUV coupe but it isn’t off-road friendly. Its exterior design, as well as driving dynamics, suggest that it is a vehicle meant to go around the city and munch through highways with brutal performance capabilities.

Standout exterior features:

  • 21-inch double-spoke M bi-color alloy wheels
  • LED projector headlamps
  • LED Daytime Running Lights
  • M specific front and rear bumper
  • M quad tailpipes

The 2020 BMW X6 M hasn’t been rated for safety by the NHTSA or the IIHS as it is expensive. Even the previous model years of X6 had not been rated. However, you can expect a good safety quotient if it was ever tested. BMW certainly has made sure that the all-new X6 M also gets some serious safety equipment onboard. It comes with a plethora of active and passive safety features like Active Blind Spot Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Front Collision Mitigation, 3D Surround View Camera, and a lot more.

Standout safety features:

  • Low Tire Pressure Warning
  • Active Blind Spot Warning
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Front Collision Mitigation
  • 3D Surround View Camera
  • Driveline Traction Control

2020 BMW X6 M vs. 2020 Porsche Cayenne Coupe Turbo

The BMW X6 M is a cheaper option compared to the Porsche Cayenne Coupe Turbo and has more room inside than the Porsche. The X6 M proves to be a value for money proposition in front of the Cayenne Coupe Turbo but the Porsche seems to have better driving dynamics and braking performance compared to the X6 M.

2020 BMW X6 M vs. 2020 Audi RS Q8

The RS Q8 is probably the strongest competitor to the X6 M as it delivers a similar kind of performance and other features such as infotainment and safety features. The RS Q8 seems to have a slightly better handling capability while the X6 M is a great value for money SUV in the range.

2020 BMW X6 M vs. 2020 Maserati Levante GTS

The Italian SUV seems to have serious grunt and performance capabilities and also has a lesser curb weight compared to the X6 M with a much more elegant interior design layout on offer compared to the sportier X6 M. The only drawback of the Levante GTS lies in the fact that it is one of the costliest options in the segment.

Final Verdict

The 2020 BMW X6 M with its redesigned exterior and interior along with more performance on offer truly attracts potential customers like a magnet. And the Coupe-like body structure certainly does have its own distinct appeal. For the price, the X6 M simply proves to be the best option to go for in the segment. It offers best-in-class performance capabilities along with great exterior, interior, and safety features making it a worthy package for the money.
