Big super-sized SUVs are what Americans crave for and for the most part people already have options from GMC or Lincoln and now Europeans have entered the game. The USA doesn’t have problems like gas prices and small roads, which makes it a literal playground to experiment with big vehicles. BMW has entered the market with a proper full-size SUV, the 2019 X7.

With engine options like a V-6 and a V-8, this German SUV has kept all doors open for every kind of buyer. The X7 is up against the rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GLS 450, Cadillac Escalade, and the Lexus LX 570. Deviating buyers from their beloved Cadillac is going to be very difficult, let’s see if the 2019 BMW X7 has what it takes to take on the American Giant.

2019 BMW X7 Features

The 2019 BMW X7 comes in only two variants, the xDrive40i, and the xDrive50i. The difference between these trims lies mainly in the engine department as the latter one gets a 4.4L Twin-turbo V-8 with of course some interior extras and features. The standard feature set on the base trim includes 4-zone climate control, immensely adjustable power seats, and many more. The xDrive50i will have a better interior experience and some extra safety features as standard.

After spending so much, a genuine leather upholstery should have been standard but that’s an optional extra everyone is definitely going to opt for. You are not sitting on the faux leather seats after spending upwards of $80k, are you? Thankfully ambient lighting is standard on the X7 and it is the best we have ever seen. The options list on the X7 is pretty vast and after getting all the must-have features you are looking at a $90,000 price tag approximately. Funny how prices keep going up in the name of luxury.

The X7 is a very packed and posh SUV, and on top of that, BMW has a lot of options to be cherry-picked on top to adjust it to an individual’s needs. To summarise the vast options list, we’ve made a table of some of the morse popular ones from the brochure:

The list doesn’t end here, multiple genuine leather upholstery options are available ranging from $1000 to $5000. This list is capable of making you think if you have made the right choice or not, deciding to buy the BMW X7.

Which Trim should you buy?

Initially, it will seem very easy as you only have to choose from two trims depending on your power needs. The xDrive40i with the turbo inline-6 is the best and practical way of buying the X7. At this point, the SUV rarely has any comfort or convenience features. Start throwing in leather upholstery, the parking assistance package, driving assistance package, climate control, luxury seating package and you have crossed $80,000 already. Buying the 2019 X7 is bound to be an expensive affair as this is the Flagbearer of BMW. So yes, the xDrive40i with options gets the vote from our side.

2019 BMW X7 Engine and Performance

7.4/10

The 2019 BMW X7 has covered all the bases in the mechanical department. The standard 3.0L Turbo inline-6 engine produces 335 horsepower & 330 lb-ft of torque and combined it has enough power to manage this 5.5-ton SUV quite easily. The X7 manages to do the 0-60 MPH sprint in just 5.5 seconds. If that's not impressive then you have the wrong ideas of an SUV in your mind.

Still, for the buyers who seek brutal power, the 4.4L Twin-Turbo V8 produces 456 hp & 479 lb-ft of torque. Driving this big SUV daily won’t be of any problem if power is concerned; the Eco mode it comes with makes this SUV drive calm, like a Buddhist monk. Switch it over to sports mode and it transforms into an NFL player bashing around in full power.

The BMW X7 has the lowest powered engine on paper and despite that, it performs better than everyone else. This is when you know that the engineers at BMW have worked extensively on aerodynamics and overall engine tuning. The Cadillac Escalade here should have performed much better but the boxy shape and that heavyweight restrict its performance. Still, Escalade is only 0.4 seconds late to reach 60 MPH. Not bad at all.

How well does the 2019 BMW X7 handle?

The 2019 BMW X7 is a totally new SUV, it doesn’t feel like an X5 in a bigger body. The driving characteristics are completely different. The X7 feels big when you start driving and it should but that feeling doesn’t overpower the driving experience. The driving modes we discussed earlier do an excellent job of transferring power to the wheels. The 21-inch wheels it comes with would have made the ride quality stiff but the vehicle comes with twin-axle air suspension as standard with Dynamic Damper Control and this makes it glide over the road.

Yes, on very bad roads you will hear some tire noise inside the cabin but for the rest of the journey, it is super silent. BMW is using dual-sided glass for the windows and it seems that these really work. The steering response isn’t what we were expecting from a 3-row SUV. It handles much better than expected. Having a big, bulky structure means a lot of body roll, but with help of those adaptive dampers and the new flexible chassis, it is very well contained.

2019 BMW X7 Braking Performance

The technical data regarding rotor sizes aren’t available but the actual braking test has revealed the potential of these brakes, and how well they work and coordinate with the gadgetry on-board to provide the best braking performance out there. The 2019 BMW X7 stops in just 105 feet from 60 MPH. This is the very best performance in this segment. Moreover, you can have the optional M sports brakes for a better braking feel and improved overall performance.

The GLS 450 has better overall performance overall than the rest of the competition and it also is just a tad bit lighter than the X7. Looking at the GLS 450’s performance it is very much possible that the BMW has the same sized or even better brake rotors.

2019 BMW X7 Fuel Economy

8.5/10

The 2019 BMW X7 comes with an I-6 engine and this is the one most buyers will prefer, mostly due to fuel economy. Having less horsepower and torque than the rivals has let the X7 have a better fuel economy. The Twin-Turbo V-8 on the xDrive50i delivers 15 MPG in the city, 21 MPG on the Highway. A V-8 is never meant to be an economical guy anyway but it still gets a better economy than the Cadillac’s humongous V-8. The fuel tank capacity is smaller on the X7 but that is compensated by the stellar fuel economy anyway.

The 2019 Escalade is one of the least performers in this segment and that could be for one simple reason. Gas prices in the states are cheap and maybe that’s why Cadillac focused on providing a larger fuel tank rather than fine-tuning their engine. Everything is fair when you put a luxury badge upfront it seems.

2019 BMW X7 Interior

9.9/10

The BMW X7’s interior is a quality control benchmark. The fit and finish tolerances are very strict and everything is made out of premium quality materials. Didn’t know BMW considers synthetic leather as a premium material but anyway. The doors and dashboard are covered in brushed aluminum trims and leather if you have them. The cheapest yet most decorative interior piece would be the Swarovski Crystal drive mode selector for $650. You can even have the rest of the switches made in glass.

The ambient lighting along with the optional Sky Lounge LED setup makes the cabin a more soothing experience overall. The seats on the X7 are very comfortable and with the plethora of adjustability they come in, you will be more comfortable in these. The stitching patterns and some cosmetic leather weave present on the seats are all done by hand. The second-row seating has two options, bench-type seats or captains’ chairs. If opted for the captain chair setup the center part gets cup holders and charging ports. The second-row seats to get all the adjustment options present on the front.

Generally, third-row seats on such full-size SUVs are reserved for overly enthusiastic kids or even adults. But on the X7 the seats are too comfortable for that. These are advertised for 2 passengers’ occupation and they actually can fit 2 fully grown adults with enough headroom to spare. You may also opt for the dedicated sunroof for the third row to eliminate that claustrophobic feeling. And yes, the last row doesn’t mean you will be left behind with features. USB charging ports and dedicated climate control switches are present for each of the passengers which are optional obviously.

Trunk space on the X7 is not much but you can always fold down the seats to create more space. Folding the seats couldn’t be easier than this. Just press a button and all the seats adjust themselves for maximum cargo space and then fold down. The same thing can be said for passenger comfort. Press a button and all the seats adjust themselves keeping uniform legroom in both second and third row for best passenger comfort. Some of the standout interior features include:

  • 5 zone climate control
  • Premium Merino leather
  • 20-way power-adjustable, multi-contour, ventilated, and massaging front seats
  • Heated front-seat armrests
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Heated rear seats
  • Second-row captain's chairs
  • Full-on swanky Swarovski crystal switches
  • Sky lounge LED setup with ambient lighting

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The 2019 BMW X7 comes with a 12.3-inch touchscreen with Apple Carplay only. The sound system is powered by the trusted Harman Kardon. An optional Bowers & Wilkins 1500-watt, 20 speakers’ setup is available as an option but that costs a bomb, $3400. The iDrive 7 system is one of the best systems on the market. The touchscreen is wide enough so that two apps can be used at the same time; touch response is great and the animations are fluid. The only downside here would be the Apple Carplay, it will start incurring charges after the first year of use and absence of Android Auto. Some of the standout infotainment features in the X7 include:

  • 12.3-inch touchscreen
  • 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster
  • Apple Carplay
  • SiriusXM
  • Bluetooth
  • Navigation
  • Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Wireless charging

2019 BMW X7 Exterior

7.5/10

The 2019 X7 looks like a BMW from every angle. Now, what does this mean? There are signature styling elements scattered all over that remind you of everything it has done in the past. The front fascia is the most happening on the X7. The big grille and much more aggressive LED headlights steal the show. There is the nonsense hype going around the grille design and it is only going to work in BMW’s favor.

The front bumper is almost leaping towards an M series sedan with all those cuts and corners. The rear fascia of this SUV is very symmetrical. The LED taillight setup with that aluminum trim piece looks stunning. The blacked-out portion around the exhaust tips highlights the fact that you have an M Sport exhaust setup, otherwise, it is body-colored. Overall, the X7 is unlike any other SUV in this segment and has carried over the German styling quite well.

The exterior dimension of the X7 is similar to its rivals and BMW has even managed to shed off some extra pounds from this one. The Cadillac Escalade is proudly flaunting the taller and wider stance it is known for but gets heavy while doing so. The Lexus LX 570 has better ground clearance in this segment but that doesn’t really mean much as it is very unlikely that anyone would take this SUV for even a casual off-road adventure. Some of the standout exterior features:

  • 21" Double-Spoke Bi-Color Orbit Grey Wheels W/All-Season Run-Flat Tires
  • Panoramic Sky Lounge LED Roof
  • Aluminum running boards
  • Adaptive suspension

2019 BMW X7 Safety

The 2019 BMW X7 hasn't been tested by the NHTSA or IIHS and it won’t be ever so we will have to rely on its active safety features suite. As standard, the X7 comes with blind-spot monitors and parking sensors on the base trim. The xDrive50i gets active lane assist and traffic jam control. The rest of the features are available as options, with the standout safety features being:

  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Automatic high-beam headlights
  • Adaptive headlights
  • Lane departure warning
  • Adaptive cruise control

2019 BMW X7 Competition

2019 BMW X7 vs 2019 Cadillac Escalade

The Cadillac Escalade is a luxury and status benchmark in the states and this is something no European can achieve even if it does everything better than the Cadillac, period. Escalade lacks the technology and that center console design is too cheeky. Performance is no bar on this SUV though it demands premium fuel in return. Escalade and X7 both are totally different SUVs with different ideologies. Depends on which one you believe in.

2019 BMW X7 vs 2019 Lexus LX570

The Lexus LX570 is one swanky-looking SUV from the outside. The interior is good and luxurious but the use of wooden trims is a bit too much. The V-8 engine is strong and performs smoothly on daily rides. Lexus also has the best-in-class off-road capabilities. The third-row seating on the Lexus would be the deciding factor. If you need the third row regularly, skip this one.

2019 BMW X7 vs 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450

The Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 has found itself a worthy opponent now. Up until now the GLS 450 has been a go-to SUV for luxury seekers but the 2019 X7 is way ahead of the Benz here. The GLS 450 is comfortable and luxurious but the X7 is just better in every way. The AMG advantage Mercedes has is very expensive too. Overall, it’s about time Mercedes should go back to the drawing board.

2019 BMW X7 Final Verdict

7.4/10

Money shouldn’t be an issue for you if you are reading about a full-size SUV, assuming that the new BMW X7 is a perfect luxury vehicle you can have without spending those ridiculous amounts on the likes of Range Rovers and Bentleys. Driving the X7 is a fun experience and it does that while having a great fuel economy as well. The interior is roomy with a practical third row and can be bathed in luxury on your demand. The 2019 X7 is really hard to beat in the segment.
