Now in its second sale year, the 2020 BMW X7 is available for sale and has a starting price of $73,900. It is offered in xDrive40i and xDrive50i models. Both the trims get different engines- a 335 hp turbo inline-6 engine and a 456-hp turbo V8 engine. Even the base engine is brawny and peppy enough to sprint from 0-06 MPH in 6 seconds. Its towing capacity is rated at 7,400 lbs. The more powerful 523-hp X7 M50i can do the same in 5.2 seconds and is priced at $99,600.

2020 BMW X7 three-quarter view

The cabin of the X7 is spacious, luxurious, and modern-looking. It packs all the latest comfort and tech features and is practical as well. In terms of safety, the X7 packs the best safety tech in the segment and is a reliable vehicle as well. The bigger updated geometry of the BMW competes with the equally big Mercedes-Benz GLS 450, the brawny Audi Q8, and the quintessential luxury off-roader Land Rover Range Rover Sport.

Overall Rating

The BMW X7 is the company's biggest SUV, and it provides high levels of refinement, performance, and technology- Edmunds

BMW was one of the first luxury automakers to get into the crossover game with the X5 but they are one of the last into the 3-row game when they introduced the X7 last year. Everything about this car is big, be it size, shape, or cabin. The X7 continues to carry the legacy of BMW's sporty handling character with fuel-efficient engines. It is also packed with a long list of tech features and safety equipment.

Speaking ownership costs, they are on par with other German competitors. For your information, its true cost to own annually sums up to be $17,900, which is a considerably big amount. Thanks to its fuel-efficient engine, the average cost per mile is $1.19, which is less than the competition. It also earned a generous reliability rating of 76 out of 100 by J.D. Power and ranks above other German rivals.

2020 BMW X7 Buying Advice

Provided that the X7 comes with a V8 without the M-badge, does get us exciting but then again when it comes down to price, the 40i makes more sense. We suggest you buy the $1,700 Driving Assistance Professional Package and $800 Parking Assistance Package as it adds essential driver-assist systems.

Much to our surprise, the X7 doesn't drive like just a larger X5. In fact, it feels miles apart from its mid-size little brother- Carbuzz

With two Engines on offer, BMW has ensured that consumers get the choice of power output they would want from their X7. The base xDrive40i trim comes powered by the same 3.0L turbo inline-6 motor that makes 335 hp and 330 lb-ft. of torque. The xDrive50i trim comes with a 4.0L turbocharged V8 that produces 456 hp and 479 lb-ft. of torque. Both the engines are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and come standard with an AWD system.  The X7 with its 7,500 lbs towing capacity is a pretty capable vehicle.

2020 BMW X7 engine

One of the most sought-after factors while buying a BMW is its ride and handling. Air suspension comes as standard fitting. This ensures to deliver a comfortable ride by absorbing all the bumps on the road. Superb body control in corners gives you the confidence to go harder around them. The steering surprises with its quick and precise operation. With multiple driving modes on offer ranging from the timid Eco mode to the maniacal Sport mode, the X7 can bring about changes in the ride height, transmission, and engine responsiveness.

2020 BMW X7 takes 6 sec to reach 60 MPH

Despite being a big SUV and having less power for a base engine, the X7 is agile and quick enough, when it comes down to performance. It takes flat 6 seconds to sprint from 0-60 MPH and manages to do the quarter-mile run in just 14.7 seconds. The more powerful xDrive50i can get to 60 MPH in just 5.2 seconds with a top speed of 163 MPH. The engine is more eager to rev and pulls out of traffic with ease. The upshifts of the gearbox are effortless, without any jitter or jerks. In terms of braking as well, the Bimmer can halt from 60-0 MPH in an astonishing 105 ft.

The Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 houses the most powerful engine in this competition. However, the Land Rover Range Rover turns out to be the most agile one here thanks to its low curb weight. The Audi Q8's power levels are equal to the X7 but it performs better on the road. In terms of towing capacity, the X7 has the least towing capacity while its rivals' tow ratings are rated above 7,700 pounds.

The Audi Q8 with its mild hybrid system helps to somewhat maintain its fuel economy. The Range Rover Sport has the worst fuel economy in this segment but its large fuel tank allows for a better driving range.

The X7's interior is some of BMW's best work yet- CarAndDriver

BMW has ensured that the X7 feels like a proper SUV and doesn't miss out on a single front as far as comfort and luxuries are concerned. The seats are plush and have been contoured with high-quality Vernasca Leather. The interior feels solidly put together and all buttons feel perfectly positioned. The heated front seats and the power-adjustable front seats and steering adds to the sense of comfort in the X7.

2020 BMW X7 dashboard

The seating capacity reduces to six if you opt for the second-row captain chairs. There are limo levels of legroom in the second row and there's plenty of headroom thanks to the body dimensions. Even the rear seats are well-cushioned as the front ones. They recline and slide forward as well for adjusting legroom in the third row. Speaking of the third row, the X7 can fit adults at the back and they aren't particularly uncomfortable either.

2020 BMW X7 infotainment system

When it comes to technology, the latest 12.3-inch iDrive infotainment system is one of the best in the business. However, it still misses out on Android Auto but offers Apple CarPlay. It can also be controlled by an iDrive controller on the center console. The interface is intuitive and features crisp graphics. The standard sound system comprises 10 speakers but you can upgrade to a 12 and 16-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system.

The new X7 does not stray far from BMW’s current design language- Kelly Blue Book

The BMW X7 looks like other BMW SUVs from all angles albeit in a bigger avatar. The massive kidney grille will greet most people on the front and will have mixed reactions from people who see the X7 for the first time. The LED headlights are also a big departure from the X3 and X5 since they have a long and narrow design that touches the grille. They are also auto-dimming and adaptive is standard equipment. If you get the 50i model, you can opt for BMW's laser light system. Additionally, you do get LED fog lights at the bottom.

2020 BMW X7 three-quarter view

The X7 sits 8.7 inches from the ground, which is good for some off-roading. Also, the air suspension can raise or lower by 1.6 inches if needed. The proportions are well balanced on the whole and the X7 doesn't intimidate from the sides. There is a whole array of creases and body lines flowing all throughout the Bimmer's body and gives the X7, a rather edgy look. The rear design of the X7 is again a departure from the BMW norm. The chrome bar across the back and slender LED taillights serve to make it look much wider than the X5.

It becomes easy to maneuver at tight spots. Some cool exterior features of the X7 are given below:

2020 BMW X7 vs 2020 Audi Q8

The Audi Q8 is the cheapest alternative to the X7 in this competition. It is equally powerful as the X7 but its low curb weight benefits from better agility. However, it doesn't offer athletic handling like the X7. The Q8 is less efficient and unlike, the X7, it is a five-seater SUV while its cargo volume is very less. In view of safety, the Q8 earned great ratings from safety agencies but packs slightly fewer safety features than the X7.

2020 BMW X7 vs 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450

The Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 is slightly powerful and hence, its acceleration is better. In terms of fuel economy, the X7 is better. Inside, the GLS 450 feels slightly more spacious but their cargo dimensions and towing capacity are almost similar. The GLS 450 isn't updated as the X7 when it comes to tech features but boasts enough luxury features. The safety features list of the GLS 450 is a bit shorter than the X7.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

2020 BMW X7 vs 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Sport

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport costs nearly $5,000 less than the X7. It is also powerful than the X7 but its acceleration is really impressive and also displays excellent off-road abilities. But, its fuel ratings are the worst while its towing capacity is similar to the X7. The Range Rover Sport's cabin seats only five people and the cargo capacity is also very less. But it offers similar safety features as the X7 for a lower price.
