BMW serves the 2022 X7 SUV to people as a perfect blend of power and luxury. Inside its cabin, it has a three-row seating arrangement that can accommodate up to 7 people along with the availability of captain chairs in the middle-row. The BMW X7’s third-row again is a little crampy, and it may be uncomfortable for most adults. However, what shapes the X7 SUV is the long list of the interior, safety, and driving assistance features.

After the SUV’s introduction long back in the US, BMW has come a long way with the SUV and has kept on improving the product year after year, and recently we got a sneak peek of the 2022 BMW X7 through spy shots. This year the signature kidney-shaped grille in the front fascia has been enlarged a bit, giving it a more aesthetic look, and the introduction of a plug-in hybrid system is also very likely. The BMW X7 competes with some of the flagship SUVs in the market like Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, Audi Q7, and Volvo XC90.

2022 BMW X7 Features

The 2022 BMW X7 will be available with 2 trims in the market, namely Xdrive40i and M50i, and the price of which will start from $75,000 and move up to $100,000. Moreover, Alpina, a third-party company in collaboration with BMW, has retuned the 2021 X7 to make it more powerful and opulent. The 2021 Alpina XB7 is priced at almost $144,000, and it is again expected for the 2022 model year with a little increase in price.

We Recommend:

The BMW X7 base version comes with a long list of standard comfort and convenience features like 21" Machined w/Painted Accents Aluminum Wheels with 50-50 Split-Bench 3rd Row Seats, Dual Zone Front Automatic Air Conditioning, Dynamic Stability Control & Traction Control, Eco Driving Style Assistant, Electric Power Steering, and much more, and can be a great deal for the price.

Price:

Apart from minor changes in the front fascia & some optional features, no changes are expected. Moreover, a hybrid plug-in system is very likely to be introduced in this system, as this feature will be in very high demand in the near future. So looking at all these changes, the 2022 model will get a normal price hike of nearly $1,000. The price range is very likely to fall between $75,000 and $100,000.

Release Date

The release date of the 2022 BMW X7 is not yet announced officially by the brand, but the tradition of BMW hints to us that it will be launched in the early summer of 2021. But this time it may be delayed a bit because of the ongoing pandemic.

2022 BMW X7 Engine and Performance

The upcoming 2022 BMW X7 is going to continue with the same powertrain option as its predecessor, but an upgraded engine with a plug-in hybrid system is very likely to be introduced. It is rather believed to catch a particular segment of consumers who are okay with decent power, but the fuel economy matters more to them. The base model will carry a 3.0L Turbo inline-6 engine that will make 335 HP and 330 lb-ft of torque, whereas the top trim, i.e., M50i will have a twin-turbocharged 4.4L V8 engine that will churn out 523 HP along with 554 lb-ft of torque.

2022 BMW X7 SUV in motion

An AWD drivetrain and 8-speed automatic transmission are offered as standard. The response from the shift knob, steering wheel, and overall moving dynamics are very good, but a better performance can be seen in its rivals. The Alpina XB7 contains a twin-turbocharged 4.4L V8 engine that can generate a whopping 612 HP and 590 lb-ft of torque. It also comes with an AWD system and 8-speed automatic transmission. The same is also expected for the 2022 model year.

* 2021 MY data has been taken as a reference for the rival cars.

The base model of the X7 can complete 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds, which is very similar to most of its rivals. On the other hand, it can complete a quarter-mile in 14.2 seconds. Both of these milestones are either the same or a little less than their rival cars. When comparing the price range, Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class is the most expensive option, whereas the Audi turns out to be the cheapest one.

2022 BMW X7 Fuel Economy

7.0/10

The 2022 BMW X7 will offer the same mpg figures as its 2021 model since no major changes in the powertrain are expected. Its fuel economy is pretty decent, and it is better than its competitors when it comes to highway figures. Other than that, the fuel tank capacity of this car will stay the same, i.e., 21.9 gallons, which is a little less than all of its competitors. According to EPA, the SUV offers 19 MPG in the city, 24 MPG on the highway, and 21 MPG combined.

Clearly speaking the rivals, the BMW X7 has the best city mileage when compared to its rivals. But in the case of range, the GLS Class and Q7 come out to be better than the X7. Overall, the dominance of the Volvo XC90 can be seen as it offers a class-leading figure of 25 MPG combined. When comparing the range, both Volvo and Benz offer the most at around 499 miles combined.

2022 BMW X7 Interior

6.0/10

The 2022 BMW X7’s interior is not the most spacious in its segment, but it contains some of the most luxurious features inside the cabin. Its three-row cabin can hold up to 7 passengers at a time. Moreover, the middle row of the X7 also offers the comfort of captain chairs. Some of the exciting features that will pamper throughout your ride are the seat massager, heating and cooling option, heated armrests, and also, you can either heat your cup of coffee or chill your drinks inside the cup holders. All the SUVs except Volvo come with a seating capacity of 7, whereas Volvo only offers a space for 6 people.

The BMW X7 has clearly more cargo space than most of its rivals at 90.4 cubic feet. The front and rear seat dimensions of the X7 are also pretty good, and it is more or less similar to most of its rivals. When it comes to quality and execution, we already know the standards that are set by BMW. The materials used to build its cabin are as always made of pure perforated leathers that come with a dark blue and cream finish, which looks stunning. Other than that, most of the surfaces inside the cabin are bolstered in leather, like the steering wheel, armrest, shift knob, etc. Some notable features on the interior are:

  • 20-way power Multi-contour front sport seats including standard 16-way power seat functions
  • Automatic Panoramic moonroof
  • Automatic 4-zone climate control
  • Power-adjustable steering column
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers with adjustable speed and automatic headlight control

2022 BMW X7 Exterior

9.0/10

The exterior of the 2022 BMW X7 at the very first glance looks very aesthetic, muscular, and sporty at the same time. Adding to this, this year they have decided to broaden the kidney-shaped grille in the front fascia to make it look cooler. The spy shots of the 2022 X7 have clearly indicated this change. Other than these, no other changes were noticed. The SUV weighs 5,370 lbs and stands 8.7 inches above the ground.

The thin front LED lights along with the big kidney-shaped grille give it a very aesthetic and exquisite look. If we park this car besides its competitors, the X7 will certainly get your attention. When comparing the curb weight of the SUVs in the competition, BMW is the heaviest, whereas the Volvo XC90 turns out to be the lightest option. Some of the exterior features of the new X7 are given below-

  • Roof spoiler along with center brake light
  • 21-inch light-alloy wheels
  • Power and heated side mirrors
  • Signature BMW grille

2022 BMW X7 Safety

9.0/10

Since the BMW X7 is a very new model and it was launched in the year 2018, it has not been tested yet by the two prestigious organizations IIHS & NHTSA. This SUV is based on the BMW CLAR platform, the same platform used in X5. The structure is pretty strong and solid. Moreover, there are various crumple zones on all sides to absorb the crash impacts.

Talking about the features, the 2022 BMW X7 has a plethora of modern-day safety features from basics like airbags, stability control, rearview camera to some of the high-tech standout features like lane departure warning and assist forward collision warning. Some of the standard safety features of the 2022 X7 are as follows-

  • Blindspot detection system
  • Frontal crash warning
  • Lane-keeping assist
  • Lane departure warning
  • Low tire pressure warning
  • Emergency braking assist
  • Parking sensors

2022 BMW X7 vs 2021 Volvo XC90

The BMW X7 is one of the few sophisticated SUVs in this segment and has been in there for quite some time and has not made any major updates. One more beautiful and sophisticated contender in the segment is the Volvo XC90, and this appeals more than the BMW in many aspects. However, when it comes to the overall package, BMW is a better option, although that means that you'll be spending $12,000 more on your vehicle.

2021 Volvo XC90

2022 BMW X7 vs 2021 Audi Q7

The first thing which differentiates both these cars is their cost. The price of the Audi Q7 is $60,800, which is $15,000 less than the BMW X7. Agreeing with the fact that the Q7 has little low features when compared to X7, but the price gap here is massive. The Audi Q7 is a little smaller in size when compared to the big & bulky X7, resulting in reduced cabin and cargo space. So, after analyzing them closely, we can say that the Audi Q7 is a value for money in this case as we get most of the essential features and quality by paying 15 grand less.

2021 Audi Q7

2022 BMW X7 vs 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

These two models compete very closely with each other in this segment as one is better than the other in some areas. The power and overall driving experience that we get in the Mercedes remains unmatched in the luxurious SUV segment, whereas, the BMW X7 is also decent in these areas but not as great as the GLS. The X7, on the other hand, beats the GLS in terms of comfort & tech features. So we would say that both these models have their own advantages in some segments, so the likes of these two cars may vary from person to person.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

2022 BMW X7 Final Verdict

The 2022 BMW X7 is a very practical SUV with a muscular look, luxurious touches all over the surface, and an abundance of comfort & safety features. Though it is a bit more expensive than its rivals, it is still a good choice in its segment. The Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class gives a tough competition to X7, and it has more advantages over it in some departments. The Audi Q7 here looks like the most valuable SUV as its price is approximately 15 grand less than its competitors, and it is also laid out with versatility and good features.
