The 2022 BMW X7 M50i gets only minor feature updates this year as there is a facelift on the cards for the 2023 model year. While the base X7 xDrive40i gets a few feature additions, the 2022 X7 M50i only adds power sunshades for the rear row instead of manual sunshades. Apart from that, the X7 M50i comes with a comprehensive set of features and in its two-tier trim structure, the X7 M50i promises extra pizzaz in acceleration and features over the regular 2022 BMW X7.

2022 BMW X7 M50i for Sale

The 2022 BMW X7 M50i price starts at an MSRP of $100,795 including the $995 destination charge. The X7 M50i finance offers start at $1,880/month at 3.99% APR for a period of 60 months with zero down payment. The BMW X7 M50i lease deals begin at a monthly payment of $1,439 for a 36-month duration and 7,500 miles of annual mileage with a $6,425 down payment.

2022 BMW X7 M50i Buying Advice

With BMW upgrading the X7 lineup for the next model year, we would suggest either waiting for a year or opting for a used BMW X7 M50i and getting one at a discounted price. The X7 M50i gets the same specs and almost the same features list since its inception, therefore, buying a 2020 BMW X7 M50i should offer great value to its buyers.

The V8-equipped monstrosity powering the BMW X7 M50i defies the subtle demeanor of its base counterpart, yet it upholds practicality with its three-row setup, contoured seats, and luminous efficiency. It competes well against the luxury and performance offered by the Mercedes-Benz GLS 580, the practicality of the Audi SQ7, and the technology on offer inside the Land Rover Range Rover P530 LWB, its major competitors.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

While the 2022 BMW X7 M50i is powered by a 4.4L 523 hp twin-turbo V8 that is capable of lightning-quick acceleration performance and yet does not fall short in terms of practicality. The interior of the X7 M50i offers a ton of creature comforts, technology, and driver safety aids over the base X7 xDrive40i. Add to that the decent ride & towing capacity and spacious cargo space, the M50i makes for a strong case for itself at an MSRP of $100,795.

Considering the performance-oriented nature of the 2022 X7 M50i, the running costs are bound to be high. That said, the $111,879 5-year cost of ownership is still much more affordable when compared to the likes of the Mercedes GLS 580. The BMW X7 M50i reliability rating of 81/100 is also higher than its competition, which adds more value to the 3-years of complimentary maintenance offered by BMW and the lack of problems faced by the owners.

Buying Advice

In the 2022 MY lineup, the BMW X7 M50i is a standalone option and the only choice that buyers have. But despite any alternate choices, the SUV makes for a potent option. It is amply equipped with class-leading features and by being equipped with a V8 engine, it coalesces performance with luxury and functionalism.

Features
9.0/10

Falling into a comprehensive trim structure, the 2022 X7 M50i is available as a free-standing option. However, considering its feature list and cogent optional specifications, seldom would buyers demand an alternate option. To begin with, the almost $100,795 SUV comes equipped with a potent V8 engine that is specifically built for performance. While features like contoured seats, Alcantara headlining, and black wood trim adds to the comfort and aesthetic appeal.

Creature comforts like four-zone climate control, multi-contour front seats, leather upholstery, and soft close doors, all add to the practicality of the SUV. The infotainment system adds gesture controls, there's a surround-view camera system and the audio system is updated to a 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system. BMW also offers options and packages to add to the premium element of the 2022 X7 M50i.

Multi-contour ventilated/massaging front seats w/Vernasca Leather Upholstery

Adaptive cruise control and automated parking assist

Head-up display and infotainment gesture controls

16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system

Surround-view camera and rear power sunshades

22-inch alloy wheels with M-Sport brakes

That said, this further hikes the prices up which could make it a difficult decision for some buyers. For example, the 20-speaker Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system will set you back by $3,400 while the Dynamic Handling package that gets you better drivability costs $3,450. Opting for the second-row captain's chair and leather dashboard costs $850 each while the 5-zone climate control needs another $800.

Engine and Performance
8.5/10

The 2022 BMW X7 M50i aims at improving the performance potential of the SUV. Compared to the base 3.0L turbocharged engine, the 2022 M50i variant gets equipped with a 4.4L twin-turbocharged V8 engine. This unit under the hood is good for 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, which are one of the more sought-after figures in the segment. The 2022 X7 M50i follows a standard mechanical setup. The V8 engine comes mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

With an improved engine assuming responsibility, the latter ensures an energetic performance that aids overall excitement. It is quick-firing and as is traditional to BMW, the handling remains precise. Even at higher speeds, body roll remains well controlled, and despite the bulky dimensions, seldom does the vehicle feel substandard in its maneuverability. It is amply versatile and depending on the driving conditions, it can adapt easily. While on the highways it has a refined demeanor, the SUV’s ground clearance allows it to be a perfect companion on minor off-roads as well.

The difference between the regular BMW X7 and the 2022 X7 M50i variant lies in its performance. The hefty dose of power and torque ensure that acceleration capabilities are uncompromised. The full-size SUV takes 4.5 seconds to reach 60 MPH, while it breaches the quarter-mile mark in 12.6 seconds. Though not the quickest, the Bavarian vehicle is impressively quick for a vehicle that weighs over 5,000 lbs and can seat seven passengers on the inside. The 5,950 lbs towing capacity may fall behind its peers, opting for the upgraded towing hitch pushes the limit to 7,500 lbs

When compared to its contemporaries, the 2022 Audi SQ7 is the closest competitor to BMW, both in terms of performance and output. From its 4.0L V8 unit, the German vehicle produces 500 hp and 568 lb-ft of torque and can sprint from 0-60 mph in just 4 seconds. It gains easy ascendancy in this regard, especially over options from Mercedes-Benz and Range Rover, which are almost a second slower than the SQ7 in similar tests.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

Thanks to its impressive performance from a monstrous V8 engine, the 2022 BMW X7 M50i does not remain in terms of its fuel economy figures. In a class that features gigantic engines under the hood, BMW claims that its flagship SUV can manage 17 MPG under combined driving conditions, which is on the lower end of the segment. It even averages 15 and 21 MPG in the city and on the highway, respectively. However, its fuel tank of 21.9-gallons is the smallest in the segment, averaging a maximum range of 560 miles on the highways.

With its largest tank and class-leading efficiency, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 580 easily takes the crown when fuel economy is concerned. It manages to average a similar combined efficiency of 21 MPG, however, its range in almost all conditions is almost 40-60 miles more than what the X7 M50i manages. On the other hand, Audi’s ascendancy in the market vanishes in this regard while the Range Rover offers slightly better fuel efficiency and range than the X7 M50i.

Interior
9.0/10

The 2022 BMW X7 M50i interior setup reeks of comfort and resounds with luxury. Despite the SUV’s focus on performance, BMW does not forego its leisurely and ostentatious aura. Step inside the cabin and you are greeted by large doors that aid ingress and egress. An Alcantara headliner runs the length of the SUV, while Vernasca leather upholstery and Fineline Black Wood trim easily justify the price that the vehicle carries. The cabin is highly tranquil and even at higher speeds, occupants will feel detached from the hustle and bustle of the outside world.

With multi-contour elements, power adjustability, and memory functionality, passengers can create an ideal seating position for themselves. However, the third row is best suited for kids only. With limited space available, adults in the rear seats will find themselves lacking under-thigh support, with the knees pointing to the roof. Moving forward, the cargo capacity also feels ample as per the class standards. With all seats in an upright position, the German SUV manages to secure a total trunk volume of 12.8 cu-ft, which is the lowest in the segment. But with the third and second row folded, the X7 M50i opens up an additional 70 cu-ft of space, which allows it to gain ascendancy over most of its rivals.

The 2022 BMW X7 M50i’s infotainment system is heavenly equipped. It comes with the best set of features, which includes a 12.3-inch centrally-placed touchscreen unit and a similarly sized driver’s display screen. In comparison, the Mercedes-Benz GLS 580 wins the battle here. The Land Rover on the other hand is just marginally behind here but struggles when it comes to trunk capacity on offer. The Audi SQ7 offers better legroom for the front and rear seats but has a very cramped third row. The trunk capacity is also better in the Audi but the cabin doesn't feel as premium as the rivals. The Mercedes and Range Rover feel the most premium here while the BMW X7 M50i offers the sporty element here.

Standout interior features of the 2022 BMW X7 M50i include:

  • Multi-contour heated & massaging front seats w/leather upholstery
  • Four-zone climate control and heated front armrest & steering wheel
  • Multi-color interior ambient lighting and head-up display
  • 12.3-inch Live Cockpit Pro digital gauge cluster w/navigation system
  • 16-speaker Harman Kardon Sound System with 2 sub-woofers
  • 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system w/gesture controls
Exterior
9.0/10

At first glance, it is hard to distinguish the 2022 BMW X7 M50i from its base variant. Both options look highly dignified and though the front grille might seem polarizing to some, the exterior fascia does deserve credit. Despite its burly dimensions, the full-size SUV reeks of sleekness with its thin head and taillights and has defined character lines. It features standard blue brake calipers and has a slightly more animated lower front grille. The roof rails feel imposing and at the back, the rear spoiler that seats the third brake light adds both athleticism and practicality to the overall design.

In terms of dimensions, the 2022 BMW X7 M50i is not the largest option available in the market. That said, the 8.7-inch of ground clearance and the option to opt for the all-wheel steering do help in maneuverability and tackling rougher terrain. BMW offers 10 exterior paint color options while buyers can also opt between the run-flat tires and performance tires for no added cost. The extended Shadowline trim costs another $300 while a space saver spare wheel is also optional.

In comparison, the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover LWB is the largest SUV and hence weighs the most. Although it has a long wheelbase it falls short at least almost an inch in terms of minimum ground clearance. At the other end of the spectrum, the 2022 Audi SQ7 is the smallest vehicle available in comparison here. In all aspects, the SQ7 remains at a disadvantage of at least a couple of inches, with its total length being restricted to 199.6 inches, and even is the shortest in terms of overall height but offers the best ground clearance.

Standout exterior features include:

  • 22-inch painted alloy wheels
  • Adaptive self-leveling LED headlights w/Auto high-beams
  • Panoramic sunroof & dual-section powered tailgate
  • Roof rails & Rear Spoiler
  • Shadowline exterior trim
  • Cerium Gray exhaust tips
Safety
8.5/10

Considering their high-cost low-volume status, the BMW X7 and the M50i counterpart fall outside the purview of the safety organizations. Nonetheless, buyers of the SUV need not be worried about the safety of their families. The 2022 X7 M50i continues to be built on the Cluster Architecture platform, which makes use of high-tensile materials and increased crumple zones to ensure that the impact from a crash does not reach the occupants on the inside. Additionally, it comes with a cogent specification list, which includes automatic high beam, park distance control, and Active Protection System as standard offerings. Some other features available with the SUV include:

  • Rollover Sensors
  • BMW Assist eCall (includes Enhanced Automatic Collision Notification and Emergency Request)
  • Fatigue and Focus Alert
  • Active Driving Assistant (includes Frontal Collision Warning, Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning, and Speed Control information)
  • Surround-view camera system w/aerial view
  • Parking Assistant automated parking system
Competition

2022 BMW X7 M50i vs 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 580

The competition between the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 580 and the 2022 BMW X7 M50i is rather easy to adjudicate. In most comparable aspects, the X7 M50i takes the lead. It is considerably quicker than its contemporary and bestows better passenger and cargo space. While the GLS 580 does manage to take lead in efficiency, BMW’s flagship model is no guzzler either and with only a diminutive overall difference, we feel that the SUV does not disappoint. So, among the comparison here, the X7 M50i is the victor for us.

2022 BMW X7 M50i vs 2022 Audi SQ7

The 2022 Audi SQ7 might be the smallest option available in the market, but with its tantalizing design and quick firing performance, it manages to woo performance-oriented buyers. It is impressively quick and by taking 3.9 seconds in the 0-60 mph test, it gives some performance coupes a run for their money. However, when considering the segment that it falls in, the BMW X7 M50i turns out to be the more logical choice. Not only does it provide higher efficiency, but BMW’s clever interior design also ensures that cargo capacity and practicality remain uncompromised. Additionally, the X7 M50i also comes with a more intuitive infotainment system is also bliss.

2022 BMW X7 M50i vs 2022 Land Rover Range Rover P530 LWB

While the Land Rover is much more expensive than the BMW, it offers great off-roading capabilities with its legendary 4WD drivetrain and drive modes. The X7 is quicker off the mark but Range Rover offers much higher towing capabilities. The Range Rover is also marginally more frugal and offers better passenger space but the X7 is more practical in terms of cargo capacity. Therefore, we would like to call it tie here. If off-roading in luxury is what you need, Land Rover makes more sense.

Final Verdict

Absolutely! The 2022 BMW X7 M50i is a coalition of performance with luxury. In true Bavarian style, the full-size SUV manages to impress the buyers with its uncompromised luxury and top-notch comfort. There is ample cargo space available to the buyers and though the third-row seats are slightly less accommodating, children would fit comfortably in them. So, amidst its flamboyance guaranteed by its high-quality materials and impressive features, the BMW X7 M50i’s pragmatism makes it an enticing choice.
