Engine and Transmission

The 2020 BMW Z4 M40i Roadster features a Twin Turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder in-line engine offering 382hp between 5000-6500rpm (bump of 47hp over it's predecessor) and 369lbs.-ft. Of torque between 1600-4500rpm. The new 6-cylinder engine's standout features include a water-cooled exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head, quicker TwinScroll turbocharger response and direct injection technology which now works at a pressure of 350 bar / 5,076 psi. The Motor feels way more eager to respond when compared to the standard Z4 and can touch 3 digit speed in no time.

Transmission duties are performed by an 8-speed Sport Automatic transmission with automatic Sport and Manual shift modes and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Responsiveness from this unit ranks as one of the best and falls slightly short to the superb PDK transmission from Porsche.

Talking numbers,The Merc manages to topple the Bimmer from the top spot in terms of power and torque. The Jag and Porsche offer lesser power than their other German adversaries but are the only ones in this entire comparison, to offer a manual transmission.

Acceleration

With Engine upgrades, comes an increase in performance and the 2020 BMW Z4 M40i is another example of the same fact. The manages to demolish the 60MPG mark in under 4 seconds and completes the quarter mile run, in just 12.3 seconds. To put this into perspective, this is faster than many coupes that cost twice or thrice more than the Z4.

The Porsche 718 Boxster falls short to the Bimmer's 0-60 figures but manages to beat it in the quarter mile. The Merc and the Jag are comparatively slower than both of these Convertibles, with the Merc being the faster one in the 60Mph run and the Jag, in the quarter mile run w.r.t each other.

Ride and Handling

BMW leaves no stone unturned in making their cars, some of the best driving machines on the road. The 50.6-49.4 percent weight distribution, along with a completely redesigned chassis, offers the perfect mix of ride balance and handling. The car's impressively sporty handling characteristics are aided by powerful lightweight braking and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) systems that includes the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), and Dynamic Brake Control (DBC).

Specific to the Z4 M40i are the Adaptive M Sport suspension, M Sport brakes and the M Sport Differential. What they essentially do is alter the ride and handling characteristics of the Z4 in Comfort, Sport and Sport+ modes, in a noticeable manner. The adaptive M Sport suspension, reduces ride height by 10mm and the Electronically Controlled dampers further strenghten the Z4's handling characters. An active locking differential coupled with an electric motor that generates a locking effect, equalizes the torque distribution between the inner and outer wheels, hence providing greater speeds while exiting a corner.

Braking

As expected of a BMW, the 3rd Generation BMW Z4 Roadster doesn't dissapoint in terms of the braking performance. The Brembo sourced Brakes on the Z4 M40i allows it to stop from 70MPH to a standstill in a staggering 148ft. The brakes offer superb confidence and feel much improved than its sibling, the sDrive30i.

The Porsche, wins the bout in terms of braking performance as it marginally beats the Bimmer in this respect. While the Merc doesn't disappoint on this front, the Jag falls short of the expectations when compared to their other adversaries.

2020 BMW Z4 M40i Fuel Economy

With the Twin Turbocharged Motor, BMW has managed to achieve a good combination of performance and efficiency with the 2020 Z4 M40i. While we don't have a complete knowhow of the entire MPG figures of the Z4 M40i, we do have its figures on the Highway and judging by that, the Z4 M40i seems to be one of the best in terms of efficiency on offer. The near 450 miles range on the highway, will make for lower gas stops and enjoyable drives.

The Jaguar F-Type and the SLC from Merc, are locked at dead heat for the top spot in terms of MPG figures. It's the Jag however, that beats all the others in terms of the range on offer. The Porsche boxster loses out on this front with the least range and the lowest MPG figures.

The asymmetric layout of the previous model is carried forward but thoroughly modernized with BMW's new Live Cockpit Professional- Edmunds.com

Seating and Comfort

With a driver focused cabin, the 2020 BMW Z4 M40i, does well in offering a comfortable ride for the passengers riding in it. The Bigger dimensions allows for easy access inside the cabin. The Sport Seats on the Bimmer offer good levels of support and bolstering and come with conveniences like Heating Functionality and Power Adjust. A wide center console seperates the passenger seat and the driver, with the driver's right leg brushing the same a bit more often than required.

The Soft Top on the Z4 lowers and raises under speeds of 30MPH. The Noise insulation from the outside with the top up is excellent and resembles some other BMW sedans. The only downside comes from the fact that the Bimmer can only seat 2 people.

2020 BMW Z4 M40i Competition

BMW Z4 M40i vs. Jaguar F-Type 340hp

The Jaguar F-Type is one the best roadsters that has ever come out of Britain. The Exhaust note from the Jaguar is a source of envy for people who see the Jaguar fly by them. The Jaguar also boasts of some of the best interiors in terms of quality in the market and is loaded with features as well. The Z4 on the other hand, despite being 8 grand cheaper than the Jag offers the best of both performance and practicality. The Bimmer is also the better built of the two and is the easier of the lot, to live with on a daily basis.

BMW Z4 M40i vs Porsche 718 Boxster S

The Porsche 718 Boxster S upgrades from the Standard Boxster in terms of both performance and handling. The 718 is hands down, the best convertible that quenches your thirst for the best driving experience. The Porsche has lesser power than the Bimmer but take it on a track and you will find it, fairing better than most roadsters out in the market. If you are on a budget and can't stretch past a certain limit, the Bimmer will be a good compromise against the Porsche. But if you want the best the best driving roadster, then look no further than the Porsche.

BMW Z4 M40i vs. Mercedes-Benz SLC 43 AMG

While Mercedes' of the past have been famed for their ride quality, the SLC 43 AMG has managed to add performance to this series of roadsters. The SLC and BMW can't be seperated by much. The SLC AMG is cheaper than the Bimmer and will appeal to a wider range of audiences as well. In terms of equipment and luxury, the Merc has it covered. The Bimmer on the other hand, boasts of future ready tech in terms of safety and infotainment. Choosing between the 2 is just a matter of personal preference but if were to choose one, we would lean towards the Bimmer.

2020 BMW Z4 M40i Final Verdict

With the 2020 BMW Z4 M40i, it seems like BMW has finally created a Roadster worthy of the BMW badge. The Z4 M40i, packs in a lot of power and high tech equipment that can be found in cars like the M3 and the M5. What's surprising is the fact that the Z4 manages to strike a good balance with power and efficiency as the Bimmer manages to deliver over 30MPG on the highway. The Z4 handles well and is fun to drive both on the cities and on the motorway. At a price of around $65,000, the Z4 M40i is certainly a must buy for people who want a proper roadster from BMW that is frugal, practical, big on performance and handles like a Bimmer.
