Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Overall Rating

The 2020 model is the 3rd Generation of the Z4 which gets a completely fresh design and the M treatment which makes it a potent performer. The 3.0L Twinscroll Turbocharged Inline Six puts out an impressive power number of 382HP and 369lb-ft of torque. There are a few M-specific components that assist this spectacle to achieve the levels of performance it comfortably sits at.

It shares many components with the 2020 GR Supra, which has caused a stir among enthusiasts all over. BMW and Toyota have joined hands in developing the platform that both these cars share. Although there are many components that differentiate both these cars. They share a similar chassis and engine apart from that both these manufacturers have made their cars individually. The Supra is available as a Coupe and the Z4 comes as a soft-top convertible or Roadster as BMW prefers to call them.

The availability of a single trim makes the purchase decision rather simple. There are a few options available to customize the vehicle according to personal choices and differentiability.

2020 BMW Z4 M40i Convertible Engine and Performance

BMW engines are known far and wide for the kind of performance they are capable of. The Z4 gets the 3.0L Twinscroll turbocharged Inline Six which is capable of producing 382HP of power and 369lb-ft of torque. The Twinscroll gives an instant boost to the engine due to the dual intakes that are paired with the sets of cylinders that complete one rotation together. It gives the engine a more naturally aspirated feel rather than the conventional turbo spool at higher RPMs making it all the more efficient in producing power.

The transmission is smooth and well-timed for the best shifts. This goes a long way in complementing the power that the engine generates. The 8-speed automatic has the option to be manually controlled through the pedal shifters on the steering wheel making the drive more engaging.

The Merc performs better than the Z4 by a rather small margin. The Porsche comes in third leaving the Jaguar in the last spot.

The twin-scroll turbocharged 3.0L inline-six has a massive reservoir of power which is unleashed with the lightest foot on the gas pedal. The acceleration is linear due to the nonexistent spool for the turbo. The transmission is quick to support the splurge of power oozing from the engine and keeping the shifts well-timed.

The 2020 BMW Z4 manages to demolish the 60MPH mark in under 4 seconds

The Beamer can power down city roads and tracks rather well and is a compelling challenger to a lot of high priced convertibles in the market. The Z4 is back and is one of the most promising cars from BMW in a while.

The Z4 outshines the competition in the 0-60 and quarter-mile. Mercedes is outrun by the Porsche which takes the second spot in this comparison. The F-Type struggles to keep up with its peers.

Ride and Handling

BMWs are known for their sheer fun drive dynamics which differentiate it from the rest of the cars in the market. The chassis has an almost perfect weight distribution making it a great handling car. With the M-Differential the power going to the wheels is modulated and made easier to handle. The car feels planted and gives the driver enough confidence to go about on their spirited driving without having to worry about the car giving up.

The Z4 gets a lot of the M treatment with the M-Sport suspensions, brakes, and diff. The different drive modes in the Z4 utilize all these components to modulate the settings in every drive mode giving each one their own specific set of dynamics. The suspensions lower as the more aggressive drive modes are selected.  the differential modulates the torque going to the individual wheels on corners making it much easier to enter and exit corners.

The M-Sport brakes do a wonderful job in terms of controlling the power surging through the wheels. The brakes are electronically monitored with various additional features like Cornering Brake Control and Dynamic Brake Control to utilize the maximum potential of the brakes. The brake pedals are responsive and get the job done without having any issues maintaining a straight line while braking.

The fastest to stop here is the BMW owing to the big brakes and the lighter frame that it sits on. It is shortly followed by the Merc which bags the second spot here followed by the Porsche. The Jag fails to keep up here as well.

2020 BMW Z4 M40i Convertible Fuel Economy

The Twinscroll turbo and the efficient inline six do return a decent fuel efficiency numbers for the Z4. With the stellar performance numbers, the Z4 still manages to return an efficiency figure of 24MPG in the city, a feat which various sedans fail to achieve.

The Z4 wins this comparison by a landslide with probably the best MPG figures in the entire segment. All the other cars in the line up have similar City MPG figures but the Merc delivers the best efficiency out of the lot on highways. The Jag has the best range owing to the large fuel tank capacity.

2020 BMW Z4 M40i Convertible Interior

The dimensions of the Z4 are well designed to integrate the best cabin space for the two. The seats are comfortable with good bolstering for the best support during a drive and functionalities like heated and ventilated seats. The seats are electronically adjusted to provide the best seating position with a telescopic steering wheel. The center console is driver-focused allowing ease of operation which also separates the driver and passenger seats.

The soft top can be operated through the key and is operable until the speeds of 30MPH. The noise insulation with the top up is excellent allowing barely any noise to get through into the cabin. The level of noise cancellation offered in spite of it being a soft top is impressive.

The F-Type has the most spacious cabin room but it loses out in terms of comfort and features. The Merc has slightly better legroom than the BMW while the BMW has a better shoulder room, making it difficult to choose the better one here. Data for the Porsche is not available.

The Mercedes-Benz SLC 43 AMG manages to hold a candle against the Bimmer in terms of cargo capacity while all others in this comparison, fall short of the same. The Jaguar comes in the last spot of this comparison while the Porsche has to suffice with the 3rd spot.

2020 BMW Z4 M40i Convertible Exterior

The cosmetic differences between the previous-gen Z4 and the current line up are worlds apart. The 2020 model gets the modernized signature BMW look with the larger kidney grills and the headlights placed on either edge. The kidney grille also acts as an air intake supplemented by the air vents on the lip of the front fascia giving it a more aggressive demeanor.

BMW Z4 M40i Convertible 3 Quarter View

A shorter wheelbase and wider body give the 2020 Z4 better handling dynamics and improve the agility as well. The light framework goes a long way in the driving ability of the Z4.

On the sides, the intake vent from the front has an outlet behind the wheels for ensuring the tires don't heat up during a spirited drive session. The Z4 exudes pure cosmetic dominance with the roof down.

The rear houses the slim taillights that complement the entire design well. The integrated spoiler above the trunk does contribute to the design style. The diffuser has the typical dual exhaust which looks simply stunning with the chrome tips.

The Porsche is the lightest out of all the cars in the line up followed by the BMW. On the contrary, the BMW has the shortest wheelbase marginally lesser than the Porsche. These two aspects go a long way in benefitting the handling of the car, the BMW and Porsche do that better than most cars here.

BMW has been always conscious about passenger safety since before the mandatory regulations came into action. The Z4 is treated no differently with various sensors all around the car to ensure occupant safety in all conditions. As the car has just been added to the BMW line up, it is yet to undergo the NHTSA and IIHS crash test. The ratings for the same are not available either, but the sturdy aluminum alloy chassis does have the grit to withstand collisions.

2020 BMW Z4 M40i Convertible Competition

BMW Z4 M40i vs. Jaguar F-Type V6

The F-Type has a unique English air about it which makes it stand out in a crowd. But sadly the Brit is beaten by the Bavarian, with better interiors and performance the BMW stands in a different league altogether. With the established difference in every comparison makes the BMW a better pick in this head to head. Not that it matters but the BMW is lighter on the pockets.

2020 Jaguar F-Type V6

BMW Z4 M40i vs Porsche 718 Boxster S

Porsche and BMW cater to a crowd that is very loyal to their brand. The drive experience is also very versatile while the Porsche is all about a natural drive and handling the BMW does do that with electronic assists. The luxury and comfort of the BMW are comparatively better than that of the Porsche. This is all a personal choice on which brand and car are better.

2020 Porsche 718 Boxster S

BMW Z4 M40i vs. Mercedes-Benz SLC 43 AMG

The brand rivalry between Merc and BMW is as old as time. The SLC is a typical Merc with fabulous interiors and the AMG enhanced engine that deliver an equally fabulous performance. The BMW is just exhilarating to drive and be in. Again this boils down to brand loyalty and preference as both these cars cater to different crow entirely.

2020 Mercedes-Benz SLC 43 AMG

2020 BMW Z4 M40i Convertible Final Verdict

The Z4 is a simply amazing vehicle and we could not ask for a better successor to the old and fable E30 Z4. The balance between luxury and performance is commendable with the right amount of power and handling as well. Be it a track or city roads the BMW will leave one wanting to spend some more time behind the steering wheel. For the kind of all-round performance, the Z4 is a good pick for the price tag it sits at.
