The subcompact SUV segment has grown exponentially over the past few years, for it has become a niche market that combines luxury, performance, and a striking design at a relatively affordable price. The Buick Encore GX ever since its launch has been an embodiment of the segment by staying true to its principles and has been highly appreciated. Though it is a subcompact SUV, it is a tad bit larger than the Buick Encore that sits below it in the lineup.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

For the MY 2022, the changes to the Buick Encore GX are rather minimal, with the introduction of a new color scheme. However, being essentially unchanged, the 2022 Encore GX continues to garner similar attention in a rather competitive segment with its impressive cargo space, a comprehensible dash design, and a suite of safety features. It competes head-on with the likes of the 2022 Hyundai Kona, 2021 Honda HR-V, and 2021 Mazda CX-3.

2022 Buick Encore GX SUV Features

The 2022 Buick Encore GX is available in three different trims like before and with two options for the engine and transmission unit. It falls in a price range that extends from $24,200 for the base Preferred variant to $30,600 for the top-tier Essence trim with the AWD setup. As standard, it comes equipped with features like power windows, a standard 8-inch touchscreen display unit, and a cargo cover. Each trim level is available with an optional AWD setup and is priced around $2,000 in excess of the base FWD setup.

We Recommend

The final decision on what trim to buy is rather subjective and will depend solely on the buyer’s appetite for features and value for money. In our opinion, the top-tier Essence trim is the one to go for. At a diminutive price difference from the base variant, under $6,000, the 2022 Buick Encore GX Essence combines standard features of the base and mid-level trims with newer and advanced features and comfort creatures like a heated steering wheel, powered passenger seat, and an option for automatic parking. We further recommend choosing the AWD setup for all-season drivability and an optional 1.3L turbo-3 engine for better performance.

Release Date

While an official communication regarding the release date is yet to be made, the 2022 Buick Encore GX will hit the markets sometime by the fall of 2021. Like its release, its production schedule is also not known and in the absence of vital information, it is difficult to make speculations regarding the specific timeline.

2022 Buick Encore GX SUV Engine and Performance

The 2022 Buick Encore GX comes fitted with two distinct engine options. Available as standard on the FWD variants of the Preferred and Select trims is a 1.2L turbo-3 unit that produces 137hp of power and 162lb.-ft of torque and comes mated to a continuously variable transmission system. On all other trims, including AWD variants of the aforementioned, is a 1.3L turbo-3 unit that produces 18 extra horses of power and is rated at 155hp and 174lb.-ft of torque. Its distinction carries forward even to its transmission unit which is a 9-speed automatic instead of the standard CVT setup.

2022 Buick Encore GX SUV Engine Bay

The 1.3L turbo-3 unit is quicker than the base engine option and sprints from 0-60 mph in 9.2 seconds and is expected to be an entire second quicker than the 1.2L turbo-3 engine. While quarter-mile timings and top speed are not known, the higher-placed and more powerful engine will be the go-to option to avoid any feeling of the SUV being slow-moving or sluggish.

Perhaps, it’s Buick’s drivability where it shines brighter than its competitors. Credit to its smaller dimensions, the 2022 Encore GX is easily maneuverable. It is easy to fit in parking spots and even high-speed cornering produces minimal body roll. Though uneven terrains and road imperfections may jolt the passengers sometimes or the other, it is not a major cause of concern for the buyers. Among the transmission units, both systems reek of refinement and while the 9-speed automatic does have a longer shifting time, it adjusts itself well in tandem to the speed and driving dynamics.

In comparison with the competitors, the 2022 Hyundai Kona, the 2021 Honda HR-V, and the 2021 Mazda CX-3 are all four-cylinder units as compared to the Buick’s three-cylinder setup. However, each SUV in the segment falls in a similar ballpark of power and torque output, with the Mazda leading the segment at 148hp and 146lb.-ft, respectively. In terms of drivetrain, while each vehicle is available as an FWD variant, the Honda is the only other car that makes use of a CVT unit.

The performance potential of each contemporary vehicle is rather limited, but it’s a segment where you don’t expect blistering performance. Yet, the 2021 CX-3 manages to be on top of the table clocking 8.2 seconds to 60mph mark. The quarter-mile sprints also depict a similar story with Mazda in the lead closely followed by the 2022 Kona and 2021 HR-V that take 16.8 seconds to achieve the feat.

2022 Buick Encore GX SUV Fuel Economy

Talk about fuel efficiency and the 2022 Buick Encore GX stands to impress. It is one of the most efficient vehicles in the segment and its frugality will attract a large number of fence-sitters who would have otherwise not opted for the vehicle. A base engine equipped Encore GX with an FWD setup is rated at 29 MPG in the city and 31 MPG on the highway and manages a combined efficiency of 30 MPG.

With the AWD variants and the more powerful 1.3L turbo-3 engine, efficiency remains the same and is indicative of the conservative nature of the vehicle. While the range of the 2022 Buick Encore GX has not yet been rated, its fuel tank is one of the largest in the segment and has a total capacity of 13.2-gallons.

The 2022 Hyundai Kona manages similar efficiency as the 2022 Encore GX, but the Honda HR-V is placed lower in the segment averaging 28 miles per gallon of fuel. However, all three vehicles have a similarly sized fuel tank that can hold 13.2-gallons of fuel, and consequently, the range covered also remains similar.

Everything that the Buick, Hyundai, or Honda do, the Mazda outperforms them, even if by a notch. The 2022 CX-3 manages to average 34 MPG on the highway and a combined efficiency of 31 MPG, which are the highest in the segment. Even though it features a less voluminous tank, it leads the segment managing 392 miles of combined range.

2022 Buick Encore GX SUV Interior

The 2022 Buick Encore GX’s cabin has not been made keeping in mind paramount luxury, rather it’s a practical proposition with a hint of an upmarket aura. The clutter-free design is lucid and user-friendly and saves the driver from looking at too many busy elements on the dash, that could have otherwise been a dealbreaker. Every aspect of the dash fits perfectly with the other. The centrally placed infotainment system gets surrounded by knobs and controls and reflects usability, while the heightened dashboard gives an SUV-like aura. However, quality might not be supreme in the base and mid-level trims.

2022 Buick Encore GX SUV Dashboard

Like overall quality, the seating comfort is also not the best in the segment. While the Buick Encore GX can seat five passengers, we feel the rear seat is best for two adults and might feel cramped with the third occupant on board. The seats marginally lack cushioning and under-thigh support may feel compromised for six-footers sitting inside the car. Our complaint of the Preferred and Select trims being marginally lackluster, however, is overridden by the use of quality materials in the Essence trim and is our trim choice for maximum pleasure.

The cargo capacity on offer feels plenty at 23.5 cubic feet. However, if you still feel the trunk volume is restrictive and constrained, Buick offers folding rear seats that increase space to 50 cubic feet. What we also like about the cabin is its sheer tranquility that masks out the external noise with great aplomb. You feel rather disconnected from the hustle and bustle that goes on outside and who would not love that?

As standard, each subcompact SUV can seat five passengers. While legroom upfront is maximum in the 2022 Hyundai Kona, the 2022 Honda HR-V features the largest back seat in the segment, making it an apt choice for family-oriented purchases. In addition, it also features the largest trunk in the segment that has a total volume of 24.3 cubic feet. The 2022 Mazda CX-3 is rather smaller on the inside and even its cargo capacity is the lowest at 17.8 cubic feet.

Some salient interior features of the 2022 Buick Encore GX include:

  • Cloth/Leather Upholstery
  • Keyless Ignition
  • Dual-zone Climate Control (except on the base Preferred trim)
  • Manual/ Power-adjustable front seats
  • Alarm

How intuitive is the infotainment system of the 2022 Buick Encore GX?

Even from the base variant, the 2022 Buick Encore GX feels heavily equipped. The Preferred trim like its higher-level counterparts makes use of an 8-inch touchscreen system that doubles up to be used with the rearview camera.

2022 Buick Encore GX SUV Infotainment System

It features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard specifications which ensure that the 2022 Encore GX can please tech-savvy individuals and also uphold its modern and contemporary approach. However, the mid- and top-level trims do get the navigation system as a basic feature and the buyers of the Essence trim can also opt for a Bose premium sound system option.

Some other salient infotainment features include:

  • USB Connection
  • Wi-fi Hotspot
  • 8-inch touchscreen system
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio
  • 7-Speaker Bose Premium Sound System

2022 Buick Encore GX SUV Exterior

The 2022 Buick Encore GX’s design looks premium as per its segment. It’s unique, modern, and has understated excellence in its design. The large central grille looks imposing and the chrome lines that run through them into the headlights add quirkiness and character to the design. While the Buick Encore GX bears an aggressive fascia up front, it looks rather subtle and happy-go-lucky at the rear end. The distinctly designed taillamps look largely optimistic and with the new color schemes, it looks appealing and better than before.

2022 Buick Encore GX SUV Front Angle View

From the side, the 2022 Buick Encore GX feels like a proper SUV with the defined roof rails and ample ground clearance of 7.5 inches to be precise. While it does bear resemblance to its younger sibling, the Encore, it is longer and stands at an overall length of 171.4 inches with a wheelbase of 102.2 inches. While its height is not known, the subcompact SUV has a total width of 71.4 inches.

The lightest 2021 Honda HR-V that weighs 2,906 lbs is actually one of the larger SUVs in the market. It’s 170.4 inches, only an inch shorter than the longest 2022 Buick Encore GX, but sports a longer wheelbase of 102.8 inches. The 2022 Hyundai Kona and 2021 Mazda CX-3 are relatively smaller and sport shorter clearance from the ground.

The 2021 Mazda CX-3 bears an old-fangled design and if you anticipate design changes, unfortunately, the car has been axed from the brand’s lineup starting from the 2022 MY. On the other hand, the 2021 Honda HR-V is slated for a complete design overhaul with its 2022 MY. The latest 2022 Hyundai Kona with revised updates to its design looks funky, however, it lacks the premium characteristics that the Buick Encore holds in the highest regard.

Some of the salient exterior features of the 2022 Buick Encore GX include:

  • LED Daytime Running Lights
  • Rain-sensing wipers
  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Heated Mirrors
  • Powered liftgate

2022 Buick Encore GX SUV Safety

The 2022 Buick Encore GX’s performance capabilities are as astounding in the safety sphere as it is in every other aspect. It scores a cent-percent rating in the crash tests conducted by the NHTSA, and while it has not been tested by IIHS, we expect it to perform similarly whenever it is tested. As standard, the 2022 Buick Encore GX comes equipped with modern safety amenities including a standard rearview camera, stability control system, automatic braking system, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Other salient features available either as standard or optional through the trim levels include specifications like:

  • Forward Collision Alert
  • Forward Pedestrian Braking System
  • Lane Keep Assist and Lane Departure Warning
  • Blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert
  • Teen driver system
  • OnStar and Buick Connected Services

2022 Buick Encore GX SUV Competition

2022 Buick Encore GX vs 2022 Hyundai Kona

The Hyundai Kona is the only other 2022 model here in comparison. With its oh-so-important updates, the 2022 Kona now asserts its dominance in the segment with its improved design and a better suite of safety features. However, it’s tough to make a decision amongst the two subcompact SUVs, since they perform equally well in acceleration and have similar fuel efficiency and in all probability will manage a similar range.

2022 Hyundai Kona

The only point of contestation then narrows to its interior comfort and exterior design. While the Buick Encore GX does look more upmarket and premium, the 2022 Hyundai Kona has better comfort on the inside. The infotainment systems for both are user-friendly, but the Buick does have more standard features. So, if you can adjust to the slightly less cushioned seats of the 2022 Encore GX, the Buick SUV will make for a better choice.

2022 Buick Encore GX vs 2021 Honda HR-V

The 2021 Honda HR-V and 2022 Buick Encore GX seem to be a by-product of similar ideologies. A potent engine, upmarket interior, and a user-friendly experience. When compared head-on, the Buick and Honda offerings manage similar acceleration capabilities, equally intuitive infotainment systems, and host a slew of safety features.

2021 Honda HR-V

While the Encore GX is the efficient option, the HR-V gains ground over its competitor by providing a more refined cabin that has better seating and higher space for rear-seat passengers. However, the Honda HR-V is due for a design to revamp sometime next year and if you’re adamant about buying the Japanese vehicle, we suggest waiting for the updated variant to get your hands on a more modern and developed SUV.

2022 Buick Encore GX vs 2021 Mazda CX-3

The 2021 Mazda CX-3 gains instant likability by featuring a more powerful base engine that is almost a second quicker than what the Buick manages. It’s more efficient and manages a comparable range. However, that is where its ascendancy starts to fade. The 2022 Buick Encore GX is the more premium and upmarket choice amongst the two.

2021 Mazda CX-3

It features a sophisticated cabin, has an extensive feature, and sports the latest tech available in the market. It is more commodious in comparison to the Mazda and has higher visual appeal and we recommend buying the Buick Encore GX for its enhanced practicality and quirkiness. Moreover, the 2021 CX-3 is the last iteration of the SUV after Mazda announced its discontinuation in the market.

2022 Buick Encore GX SUV Final Verdict

The 2022 Buick Encore GX falls into a list of finer options in the market, for its sheer usability and pragmatism. It trumps its competitors by providing and refined experience to the buyer and with a number of trims, engines, and drivetrain options cater to the needs of all those interested. While it does suffer from intricate flaws like its seating comfort, handling capabilities, and usage of hard-plastics in the base and mid-level trims, the 2022 Encore GX’s strengths overpower its weaknesses and that being said, we feel that the subcompact SUV from the house of Buick has abundant potential and makes for a viable proposition, at an affordable price!
