Detailed Review

While manufacturers have been able to dish out a Hybrid variant of their popular sedans, some brands are still relying on their Gas powered versions and adding subtle changes to go against the likes of those hybrids. One of thes brands is Buick and the Sedan of their choice is the Buick Lacrosse “Hybrid”. While the Lacrosse Hybrid isn’t exactly a Hybrid and Buick doesn’t claim it to be one, the Lacrosse features a Li-Ion set and a Electric generator that enhances the efficiency of the Gas motor.

Expert Review

CARHP Editorial June 3, 2019

The 2019 Buick Lacrosse has been the preferred choice of people who have prioritized Interior space and comfort over everything else. The Lacrosse offers amazing ride on the inside and comes loaded with a host of bells and whistles. Prices for the Lacrosse range from $30,495 to $40,295 for the 5 trims on offer. Other than the 1SV, Preferred, Essence and Premium trim, Buick has added a Sport Touring trim in 2019.

Powering the Lacrosse Hybrid is a 2.5L Inline 4 motor that shells out 194hp and 187lbs.-ft. Of torque. A Powerful 3.6L V6 motor is also available but that is only for the Non-Hybrid Lacrosse. The Lacrosse Hybrid comes paired to a 6 speed Automatic transmission and is mated to a FWD configuration.

2019 Buick LaCrosse hybrid Sedan Features

The 2019 Buick Lacrosse, doesn't get much changes in the features on offer other than the addition of a New Trim called the Sport Touring Trim. The Premium Trim gets a Cabin Air Ionizer as well as an addition. The Lacrosse comes with both FWD and AWD configuration but the Hybrid is available only in the FWD configuration.

2019 Buick LaCrosse hybrid Sedan Engine

2019 Buick Lacrosse Hybrid comes with a 2.5L 4 Cylinder motor with a compact Electric Generator and a 24-Cell Lithium-Ion Battery pack.

eAssist light electrification technology combines a next-generation 2.5L 4-cylinder engine with a compact electric motor generator and advanced 24-cell lithium-ion battery pack. The system's electric assist provides a boost of smooth power for seamless transitions into and out of fuel-saving Stop/Start mode. While this may not be the most perfect combination in terms of the engine, the Electric part of the motor, does make the best use of the gas power train and delivers the most out of the same.

Transmission duties are performed by a 6 speed automatic unit that does fine while changing gears at the time of need and is seem less in the same transition.

Speaking of rivals, the newly designed Toyota Avalon, takes top honors in the list of the most powerful hybrids of the lot. The Accord comes in a close second while the Fusion Hybrid has to live with the last spot.

Acceleration

With a time of 8.3 seconds to do the 0-60 run, the Buick Lacrosse manages to save itself from being the slowest car among its rivals. It's a decent performer on the city where the demand from the motor is not the highest. It's on the Motorways that the Lacrosse struggles a bit but put it in the right gear and you will make the most out of it.

The Accord still manages to be at the top of the list in terms of the fastest accelerating cars in the list and the Avalon manages to take the 2nd spot. The Fusion is the slowest of the lot and takes the last spot here.

Ride and Handling

2019 Buick Lacrosse Hybrid boasts a smooth gear-shifting and an on-center steering. Though the ride quality is good, cornering might put the passengers out of their comfort zone. Moreover, the engine feels overwhelmed and tires pressurized under performance requests, even the slightest ones.

Though the acceleration is smooth, it is too slow. Even mildly racing the speed makes the engine groan. Lacrosse Hybrid does well in low-speed turns, however, beyond that it's not convenient at all in any way. Though a suspension is in place it does less to avoid the wallowing body motion. Overall, largely inoffensive, the 2019 Buick Lacrosse Hybrid feels large and heavy.

Braking

The Buick is one of the most planted cars in the segment with great road manners and the braking of the Lacrosse is an example of the same. The 170ft stopping distance from 70MPH ranks as one of the best among its adversaries. The Brake pedals are easy to modulate but may feel soft at times. Under hard braking, the stability from the sedan is top notch and drivers won't complain about the same.

While the weights of the Avalon and the Accord are nearly the same when compared to the Buick, we expect similar braking performance from the duo as well. The Ford Fusion is the last in this respect as well with its 187ft stopping distance.

2019 Buick LaCrosse hybrid Sedan Fuel Economy

While the Lacrosse Hybrid, isn't exactly a true blue Hybrid, the Electric generator-Battery setup does well in extracting the best gas figures from the gas powered motor. The Buick returns 35MPG on the highway and gives an overall figure of 29MPG.

The Honda Accord is still the most frugal of all and returns an impressive 48MPG of gas mileage overall. The Newly re-designed Toyota Avalon comes ahead of the Fusion by a small margin in this respect as well.

Seating and Comfort

Like its class rivals, 2019 Buick Lacrosse Hybrid provides seating for 5 people. Up in the front, the luxury sedan offers 38.4 and 42 inches of headroom and legroom, respectively. The sheer size of legroom gives a luxurious full-stretch feel. The Lacrosse also excels in the space offered as there is ton loads of space in terms of the headroom, leg room and shoulder room for passengers both on the front and the rear.

The Re-designed Toyota Avalon comes the closest in terms of space on offer on the inside. The Ford and the Honda are the most spacious among the lot but lose out to overall comfort to the Buick and the Toyota.

Infotainment System

2019 Buick Lacrosse Hybrid supports an excellent infotainment system, which is both easy-to-use and intuitive. A tuning knob is absent though. The system comes with an 8-inch hi-res touch display paired with an 8-speaker audio system. Support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is available. Besides, there is an optional navigation upgrade available, summoning precisely detailed maps.

Connectivity options via Bluetooth, USB and Wi-Fi hotspot is available. Additionally, the 2019 Buick Lacrosse Hybrid infotainment system comes with a month of fee-free OnStar subscription. Other noteworthy features include a concierge service and a stolen vehicle tracking functionality.

Key interior features to the 2019 Buick Lacrosse Hybrid includes:

  • Power adjust Front Seats with memory for driver seats

Cargo Capacity

2019 Buick Lacrosse Hybrid offers a maximum cargo capacity of 15 cubic feet. On the inside though, we aren't big fans of the unconventional placement of the storage bins and passengers will have to get used to the same after a while.

Dimension and Weight

In terms of dimensions and weight, the Buick has the advantage of being the longest and widest among its adversaries. This yields it a big advantage in the real world as it offers ton loads of space on the inside. This however, is an issue when you are parking this buick in crowded places or navigating through heavy traffic. In terms of weight as well, the Buick has an advantage as it is relatively light on the same front as compared to the others.

2019 Buick LaCrosse hybrid Sedan Safety

2019 Buick Lacrosse performs well in various crash tests. Unfortunately, though, Buick offers advanced safety tech only on the top trim. Nonetheless, the ride secures a 5-star rating in all NHTSA ratings. IIHS awarded Good ratings to various crash tests that 2019 Buick Lacrosse Hybrid underwent. The only stain on the repute is the Poor rating given for headlights.

2019 Buick Lacrosse Hybrid comes equipped with a forward collision alert and teen driver technology. The Lacrosse Premium trim comes with the optional Driver Confidence Package 2. It adds adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. Furthermore, the Premium and Essence trims come with optional blind spot monitors.

2019 Buick LaCrosse hybrid Sedan Competition

Buick lacrosse Hybrid vs. Ford Fusion Hybrid

Powered by a 2.0L 4-cylinder gas/electric hybrid engine, Ford Fusion Hybrid is yet another popular hybrid ride and what comes to the Ford's favor is its impressive starting price of nearly $28,000. The 2.0L engine generates 188 hp and 129 lb.-ft. of torque. As for gear-shifting, the ride comes with a CVT automatic mode.

Ford Fusion Hybrid is the slowest ride in the hybrid sedan space, with a requirement of 8.9 seconds for accelerating to 60 MPH. It traverses a quarter-mile in 16.9 seconds. Again, the slowest in the league. Probably the biggest selling point of the hybrid ride is its remarkable mileage of 42 mpg.

Buick Lacrosse Hybrid vs. Honda Accord Hybrid

With an opening bid of nearly $26,000, the Honda Accord Hybrid is a VFM proposition when compared to its rivals. Like the Ford Fusion Hybrid, Accord Hybrid employs a 2.0L 4-cylinder gas/electric hybrid engine. The engine delivers an impressive 212 horsepower and 232 lb.-ft. of torque.

Performance-wise, the Accord Hybrid is able to accelerate to 60 MPH in 7.1 seconds. This makes it the 2nd fastest 0-60 MPH shifter in the hybrid sedan space. In addition to being the least bulky ride in the league, 3400 lbs., Accord Hybrid offers an impressive combined fuel economy of 47 mpg.

Buick Lacrosse Hybrid vs. Toyota Avalon Hybrid

The Toyota Avalon Hybrid has been given a generation change in 2019 and it is one of the strongest competitors in the Hybrid Sedan space. The Avalon offers the Quality, Durability and Reliability of Toyota and matches the Buick in terms of Space and comfort. It also comes loaded with a good standard set of features and not skip on the safety as well.

In terms of pricing though, the base variant of the Lacrosse is cheaper than the Avalon by $7,000 and a similarly priced trim of the Lacrosse comes loaded with a good set of features. Other than the build quality and the performance, the Buick manages to match the Toyota in all other parameters.

2019 Buick LaCrosse hybrid Sedan Final Verdict

While the growing demand of environment friendly cars is at an all time high, Buick has played it smart and launched a Eco-Friendly version of the standard Lacrosse. The Lacrosse Hybrid comes with the good bits of the standard lacrosse like the superb ride quality, great noise insulation on the inside and a loaded infotainment and interior feature set. If you haven't yet made up up your mind for a Real Hybrid and still want to have the fun of a gas powered Sedan but with a slightly lesser guilt in mind, the 2019 Lacrosse Sedan is certainly the sedan to go for.
