2019 Buick Regal GS Sportback Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

The Regal GS is simply a Regal Sportback sedan with a bigger heart, which is quite a fine car itself. This performance version features a 310 V6 motor, which is significantly faster than the regular Regals. You can purchase one for just under 40 Grand, which is quite an exceptional value for money. While this is officially the performances model, the list of priorities has luxury on top.

A lot of people consider cars as tools, to be used for transportation and nothing else. These people make up the majority of car buying audience around the world. They have plenty of cars to choose from, all of which are, well, good. Some people though, have a different perspective. They view a car as more than just a mechanical invention. These people search for the soul in the machine. For such people, we have cars that offer excitement as a part of their standard equipment.

People who seek automotive thrills may not always have deep pockets. Thankfully, the industry adapted and offered affordable performance cars. Thus, we have the brilliant Buick Regal GS. While the GS is both powerful and luxurious, it isn’t the most desirable. For the price at which this car retails, there are plenty of other options to consider as well. So, should you go for GM’s budget luxury/performance sedan, or should you put your money and faith in some other car?

2019 Buick Regal GS Sportback Engine

GM’s nine-speed automatic transmission, co-developed with Ford, doesn’t hunt for gears and valiantly does its part to keep the six in its powerband-Car and Driver

Engine and Transmission

The job description for an engine includes only two main attributes, produce power and sound nice. While the turbocharged engine in the lower Regal trims isn’t bad in this regard, the V6 is much better. It has a sweet sports exhaust, and the engine has a meaty burl under hard acceleration, which is very exciting.

The transmission is a smooth 9-speed automatic, with a stick operated manual, so you can command the gear changes yourself if you want to. Sadly, there are no paddle shifters behind the steering wheel. The gearbox has been tuned for performance, and thus the gearbox has a much better response than the one on the other Regals.

Acceleration

The Regal GS has a moderately strong acceleration, limited by the “budget” portion of the “budget performance” in the segment’s name. Pinning the pedal down will throw you back into the lovely bucket seats. The 0-60 run takes under 6 seconds, and quarter mile takes under 15. The Dodge Charger has everyone beat in this area, owing to its much larger V8 engine(s).

Braking

The brakes on the Regal GS are a full Brembo disc set up for the front and rear, and are strong with great feel. They inspire confidence under hard braking and cornering. Shedding speed is easier for the GS than gaining it. You can also have painted calipers. They don’t increase the braking performance, but they look cool, and sometimes that’s all that matters.

Ride and Handling

The Regal Sportback is quite a poised handler, stable under cornering, while still being comfortable. The GS Sportback only improves on the handling, without much of a penalty to the ride quality. To be honest, this feels like an underpowered ATS-V, and experienced driver would yearn for more power from the motor, or a bigger motor altogether. There is also next to no feedback from the wheels, courtesy an electronic steering system.

2019 Buick Regal GS Sportback Fuel Economy

The naturally aspirated V6 is a thirstier engine compared to the base turbo inline-4 engine, which is the sacrifice you have to make for the additional power. The efficiency figures aren’t a disappointment though. You can easily stretch one gallon for over 22 miles on an average.

Seating and Comfort

The 2019 Buick Regal Sportback has very impressive interiors, and the GS gets an upgrade over those. The front passenger gets a bucket seat, just like the driver, both of which are heated and have built in massager. The cabin loses the roomy and airy feel owing to the darker colors. The dash is premium, and cheap plastic panels are well hidden in plain sight. The rear seats aren’t heated, neither do they massage you while you enjoy the generous legroom. The headroom is quite tight too, but you get rear AC vents and 2 USB ports.

2019 Buick Regal GS Sportback Exterior

First of all, the new GS version of the Regal Sportback—which, again, essentially is a rebadged Opel Insignia—is a legit looker-Car and Driver

Weight and dimensions

The Regal GS is powerful, but it is also quite heavy. At over 2 tons, calling this car light would be an extreme stretch. You could still call it nimble though, as the dimensions are almost the same as the other Regals. The length is well under 200 inches, which makes it easy to push the car into tighter spaces, and never does the car feel too bulky to handle easily.

Design and styling

The 2019 model has the same styling and design as the Buick Regal Sportback, save for the front end. The fog lights are replaced by (fake?) air scoops, and they have integrated parking sensors in them. The sleek headlamps are pretty and the front grille features the Buick logo in the middle and two chrome stripes running outwards on the sides.

The design updates on the GS are minimal, and quite subtle too. Other than the standard LED headlamps, there isn’t much to the styling. This is a very understated car, and at a simple glance you cannot guess that this car holds a 3.6-liter V6 under the hood. The GS trim has beautiful 19-inch wheels, which are pretty much the biggest visual giveaway.

2019 Buick Regal GS Sportback Safety

The 2019 Buick Regal GS gets a lot of safety features on board:

  • StabiliTrak electronic stability control system with traction control
  • Daytime Running Lamps
  • Airbag systems: Front airbags, Knee airbags, Seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and Head-curtain airbags.
  • Passenger Sensing System
  • OnStar & Buick Connected Services capable
  • Rear Vision Camera
  • Front and Rear Park Assist
  • Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert

2019 Buick Regal GS Sportback Competition

Buick Regal GS vs Toyota Camry

What would you choose? Your choices are: A simple and classy luxury sedan, and a Japanese one that that is almost similar and also cheaper. The practical buyer would choose the latter, although if you care about brand image, and flaunting your car (which you should, if you are paying this much money), then you might be happier with the Buick.

The Camry is not a bad looking car, on the contrary it is quite a looker. It has a very modern-sporty look, with lines instead of curves all around. It’s just that a few years down the line, the Camry would be look extremely outdated, while the Buick would still be considered a beauty.

Buick Regal GS vs Dodge Charger

Buick and Dodge represent two different ends of the spectrum. One focuses on comfort and luxury, while the other offers power and performance. Step into the Dodge and you’ll be greeted by cheaper plastics and an overall poorer interior feel. That all get thrown out of the window though when you step on the gas though.

For the same price as a Regal GS, you can have a Charger R/T Scat Pack, which is powered by a massive 6.4-liter V8, which produces 485 horsepower. If you don’t wish for so much power, you can opt for the smaller engine, the 5.7-liter V8, on the Charger R/T, and save nearly 3 grand over the Buick.

Buick Regal GS vs Ford Taurus SHO

Ford Taurus is a much larger car than the Buick, and you would notice the slightly better interior space on the inside if you step into the former just after the latter. The shoulder room is the biggest improvement in the Ford as compared to the Buick. It also has a higher power output, which means better performance (although the Charger R/. T has them both beat).

The Taurus SHO does make a few sacrifices though, and weight management is one of them. It is big, bulky, and heavy. Handling is nice though, and the EcoBoost V6 sounds better than other V6s in the market. Also, as the Taurus will be discontinued next year, and dealerships are offering heavy discounts to clear stock. If you get a good deal, the Taurus would keep you happy, if you can live with its boring looks.

2019 Buick Regal GS Sportback Final Verdict

While the Buick doesn’t look fast, or sporty, or intimidating, on the outside, it is all those things in secret. Well, intimidating is a bit too strong, but the car is certainly exciting. For the classy gentleman, or a lady, who like their cars to be understated but have a secret wild side, the Regal GS is the perfect choice. It is quite luxurious, but can change character at the drop of the hat. You also have quite a lot of power, but nobody knows that! On a more serious note, this is a very capable car, one that has a timeless pretty look.
