2018 Cadillac ATS Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

The Cadillac ATS Sedan is a well-priced, multi-option luxury sedan that boasts strong powertrains. In addition to the good level of convenience, the sedan brings, it is popular for being a fun-to-drive ride. Typically, the ride remains unchanged for 2018 revamp. This excludes an upgraded infotainment system and the availability of a new shade.

There are two kinds of engines available with the ride, depending on the trim. For the base and Luxury trims, a 2.0L Turbo, I4, DI, DOHC engine is there. It supplies 272 hp of power along with generating 295 lb.-ft. of torque. The other two trims, Premium Luxury and Premium Performance feature a 3.6L V6 engine. It boosts power to 335 hp but throttles torque to 285 lb.-ft.

One can choose between 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic transmission modes with the 2.0L engine. However, only the latter transmission mode option is available with the 3.6L engine. Pricing options for the Cadillac ATS Sedan start from $36,490. The coupe gives a close competition to the likes of BMW 330i Sedan, C300 Sedan and Audi A4 2.0 TFSI Premium.

ZF Premium Steering, rear vision camera, and natural voice recognition are some remarkable features of the base trim. The second trim, the Luxury trim, comes with heated front seats and steering wheel along with Universal Home Remote. The other 2 trims feature more sophisticated and high-end features.

We Recommend

Among the 4 trims, the Cadillac ATS Sedan Luxury is the one that offers the most value. It has all features as that of the Cadillac ATS Sedan plus rain-sensing automatic wipers and rear cross-traffic alert. Moreover, unlike Premium Luxury and Premium Performance trims, you can choose between the 8-speed automatic and 6-speed manual transmission mode.

2018 Cadillac ATS Engine

7.3/10

“The 2018 Cadillac ATS is a genuine sports sedan that gives Germany’s best a run for their money. Acceleration is brisk and satisfying with any of the three engines, though the twin-turbocharged V6 in the ATS-V is especially grin-inducing. Fuel economy is mediocre, but you likely won’t care because you’ll be too busy carving through canyons to notice.”- cars.usnews

Engine and Transmission

The latest iteration of the Cadillac ATS Sedan comes with a 2.0L Turbo I4 engine, capable of generating 272 hp of power and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. Both of which are highest among the competition. Mercedes-Benz C300 Sedan offers the lowest power of 241 hp. BMW 330i Sedan, on the other hand, has the lowest torque rated at 258 lb.-ft.

Like the Cadillac ATS Sedan, BMW 330i Sedan features an 8-speed automatic transmission mode. However, Cadillac ATS Sedan also comes with an optional 6-speed manual transmission mode. Audi A4 2.0 TFSI Premium also features a 6-speed manual transmission mode. Mercedes-Benz, unlike any other class rival, features a 9-speed automatic transmission mode.

Acceleration

The latest revamp of the Cadillac ATS Sedan is capable of reaching 60 MPH in 5.4 seconds. Mercedes-Benz C300 Sedan is the slowest coupe on the list. It takes 5.8 seconds to hit the 60 MPH mark. It also takes the most time of 14.8 seconds for covering the quarter-mile.

Best quarter-mile time is flaunted by the Audi A4 2.0 TFSI Premium, 13.8 seconds. Cadillac ATS Sedan takes 13.9 seconds to traverse a quarter-mile. Unfortunately, Cadillac ATS Sedan loses the competition in CO2 emission value. It has a CO2 emission value of 7.1. Audi A4 2.0 TFSI Premium features the least CO2 emission value of 6.5 amongst the fraternity.

Ride and Handling

Over the years, the ATS Sedan has emerged as one of the most likable sporty, fun-to-drive coupes. It has excellent powertrains and superbly blissful steering, making up for a top-notch ride experience. Both 8-speed automatic and 6-speed manual transmission modes are silky smooth. However, if handling is of the utmost concern then the 6-speed manual is the better option to go with. Nonetheless, the 8-speed auto is capable of quick, rapid speed shifts.

The chassis employed in the coupe is sturdy and reliable, whether it is the base model or the top trim. Premium models, i.e. except for the base trim, feature an FE3 suspension setup that includes magnetically charged fluid-filled dampers. These react quickly to flattening road imperfections and ultimately, reduce body roll.

Braking

The ATS flaunts to have a well-balanced braking system. While the front brake measures 12.6 inches, the rear brake is slightly smaller and measures 12.4 inches. The rear brake in ATS Sedan is bigger than that in the C300 Sedan and 330i Sedan, both of which are heavier coupes.

Among the competition, the 2018 Cadillac ATS Sedan takes the least distance to come to halt during the brake test. It covers a distance of 115 feet before coming to a halt from 60 MPH. This is 8 feet and 11 feet less than that of the 330i Sedan and Audi A4 2.0, respectively. Mercedes-Benz C300 Sedan is the slowest in the same feat. The Mercedes took 131 feet to come to a still.

2018 Cadillac ATS Fuel Economy

7.9/10

The Cadillac boasts to have a combined fuel economy of 25 mpg. It offers 22 mpg in city conditions and 31 mpg on highways. Despite flaunting an impressive combined fuel economy, it is least amongst the class. The C300 Sedan, 330i, and even the Audi A4 Premium offer a better, combined fuel economy of 27 mpg.

2018 Cadillac ATS Interior

6.7/10

When it comes to fit and finish, the 2018 Cadillac ATS has one of the nicest cabins in the class, and an abundance of standard features add value and entertainment opportunities. A small trunk, a cramped rear seat, and issues with the infotainment system mar its interior score.”- cars.usnews

Seating and Comfort

2018 Cadillac ATS  is capable of accommodating 5 persons at max, like its adversaries. Front headroom, shoulder room, and legroom available in the coupe is 38.6, 55.2 and 42.5 inches, respectively. The legroom is maximum among the league. BMW 330i Sedan offers the maximum front headroom of 40.3 inches.

Second headroom, shoulder room, and legroom available in ATS Sedan are 36.8, 53.9 and 33.5 inches, respectively. All three of the attributes are lowest amongst the competition. BMW 330i Sedan offers the most rear headroom, while Audi A4 flaunts the most rear legroom.

Infotainment System

The 2018 ATS comes with an infotainment system dubbed CUE. It boasts multiple USB ports, Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay integration and premium Bose sound system as standard features. In addition to having virtual, haptic feedback buttons, the infotainment system can also be controlled by a few physical buttons. It is easy to use but there are some issues in usability.

In some cases, complete attention needs to be paid to the infotainment system for changing settings. Regardless of the trim, an 8.0-inch touchscreen, streaming Bluetooth and a rearview camera are standard. Among other options, a heads-up display and adjustable dampers are also available.

Interior Features

Interior features of the 2018 Cadillac ATS Sedan include:

  • Comfortable front seats
  • High-quality feel
  • Glossy real wood and carbon fiber with available leather seating surfaces
  • High-level adjustment for finding the comfortable position

Cargo Capacity

The cargo capacity of Cadillac isn’t impressive at all. It offers a mere 10.4 cubic feet of cargo volume, which is the lowest in the class. Both BMW 330i Sedan Audi A4 Premium offers the most cargo volume of 13 cubic feet. The Mercedes-Benz C300 Sedan offers a slightly less 12.6 cubic feet of cargo volume.

Dimension and Weight

The Length, width, and height of the ATS Sedan are 182.8, 71.1 and 55.9 inches, respectively. It is the most compact sedan in the class. Moreover, it is also the lightest sedan with 3373 lbs. of curb weight. The Audi A4 2.0 TFSI Premium has the most curb weight of 3582 lbs.

The Cadillac ATS Sedan comes with a wheelbase of 109.3 inches. It is the smallest in the league. Mercedes-Benz C300 Sedan flaunts the most wheelbase of 111.8 inches.

Exterior Features

Unfortunately, the 2018 Cadillac ATS Sedan doesn’t gain a spotlight like its siblings. As such, its exterior looks can be defined simply as average. On the contrary, to the bold look flaunted by other Cadillac’s, ATS Sedan features a flat and light exterior. Nonetheless, there are a few brush-offs on the outside, including:

  • Smoother and softer corners
  • Lower hood line
  • Longer look from side-view

2018 Cadillac ATS Safety

2018 Cadillac ATS Sedan comes with a few safety feats but all of them are sturdy and reliable. The ride comes with 8 airbags for ensuring the safety of passengers during undesirable scenarios. Rear child security door locks are available in addition to the Cadillac Edition First Aid Kit.

2018 Cadillac ATS Competition

Audi A4 2.0 TFSI Premium vs Cadillac ATS

Audi A4 2.0 TFSI Premium comes with a 2.0L TFSI I4 engine. It delivers 252 hp of power and 273 lb.-ft. of torque to the coupe. For gear shifting, a 6-speed manual transmission mode is available. The bid for A4 2.0 TFSI Premium starts from $40,500, about $4k than that of the Cadillac ATS Sedan.

Audi A4 2.0 TFSI Premium hasn’t one of the best 0-60 MPH acceleration at its disposal, 5.7 seconds. Nonetheless, it surely outshines the competition in terms of covering a quarter-mile in 13.8 seconds. The sedan has the lowest CO2 emission value of 6.5 as well as biggest brakes in the competition. Moreover, it offers a better-combined fuel economy, 27 mpg, than that of the Cadillac ATS Sedan, 25 mpg.

BMW 330i Sedan vs Cadillac ATS

Pricing options for BMW 330i Sedan start from $40,250, same as that of the C300 Sedan. The sedan packs a 2.0L 16-Valve 4-Cylinder Turbocharged engine. With it, the car is capable to deliver 248 hp of power and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. It has the same transmission mode as that offered by the Cadillac ATS Sedan i.e. 8-speed automatic transmission mode. BMW 330i Sedan takes 0.1 seconds more than the ATS Sedan for accelerating to 60 MPH.

It has better CO2 emission value of 6.6 than that of the Cadillac ATS Sedan. The ride is, however, slower than that of the Cadillac ATS Sedan in stopping during emergency scenarios. It travels a distance of 123 feet before coming to a full halt. The combined fuel economy of 27 mpg, nonetheless, is better.

Mercedes-Benz C300 Sedan vs Cadillac ATS

With a 2.0L Turbo I4 engine at its disposal, the Mercedes-Benz C300 Sedan is yet another powerful mid-size sedan. The 241 hp of power and 273 lb.-ft. of torque is coupled with a 9-speed automatic transmission mode. The bid for C300 Sedan starts from $40,250, about $4k more than that of the Cadillac ATS Sedan. It has the slowest acceleration as well as quarter-mile coverage time amongst the fraternity.

C300 Sedan offers better rear space than that of the Cadillac ATS Sedan. Moreover, it offers 12.6 cubic feet of cargo volume, which is 2.2 cubic feet more than that of the ATS Sedan. However, it requires a distance of 131 feet to come to halt immediately while decelerating from 60 MPH. This is 16 feet more than that of the Cadillac ATS Sedan.

2018 Cadillac ATS Final Verdict

All in all, the Cadillac ATS is an affordable coupe with a wide variety of options to choose from. The luxury sedan flaunts to have sturdy powertrains at its disposal. Front seats are excellent, comfortable and stylish. Nonetheless, the rear seats lack that charm and cargo volume isn’t something appreciable.

There are several great luxury sedans to go in the segment. However, Cadillac ATS Sedan stands out among the herd for a variety of reasons. Interior elegance, robust performance and a lengthy feature list are some of them.
