The Cadillac CT4 is the only American counterpart to the highly German-dominated luxury compact sedan segment. This is an entry-level sedan offering from Cadillac, and with a sharp-looking styling, the playful character of the car is well complemented. The CT4 is sold with two engines: a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 237 hp is the standard engine offered, while there is an option of a bigger 2.7L engine producing 309 hp which you can upgrade to.

At a starting price point of $33,395, the CT4 goes up against the likes of the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The Cadillac CT4 is competitively priced, looks enthralling, and provides a taste of luxury like no other. Still, is it capable of catching up to its European rivals that have been around for years? 2022 Cadillac CT4 Features

The Cadillac CT4 is available in three trims, namely the base Luxury, the mid-Premium Luxury and the top of the line Sport trim with enough feature add ons to differentiate distinctively between them all. There is also the CT4 V line which gets a bigger engine and 10-speed transmission along with upgrades for better ride quality. The popular performance sedan Cadillac ATS-V, last seen in 2019, is also slated to make a comeback as the CT4 V- Blackwing. In this review, we stick to the basic CT4 lineup.

Which trim should you buy?

The Cadillac CT4 is a well-equipped car and by packing even the base trim with a load of features, Cadillac has done justice to the fact that they named the entry trim as Luxury. The Sport trim is sleek looking and for a premium of $4,000 is an irresistible choice too, but you need to foresee the fact that you’ll be giving up ride quality for a stiffer suspension and low profile tires which eventually enhances performance. However, it’s kind of ironic that the Sport trim doesn’t get any engine upgrades.

Rather, it is the Premium Luxury trim that gets an option to upgrade to the 2.7L Dual Volute Turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with the 10-speed automatic transmission from the standard 2.0L Turbo 4-cylinder engine. Thus, it is best to go with the mid-Premium Luxury trim along with the bigger engine which offers all the necessary features and at the best possible retail price. The engine upgrades on the Premium Sports trim will cost an additional $4,000.

2022 Cadillac CT4 expected release date.

The 2022 CT4s are already up for production and bookings have commenced. They are expected to hit dealerships by the end of the year.

2022 Cadillac CT4 Engine and Performance

6.0/10

The Cadillac CT4 has some rather confusing engine specs when compared along with the trims. As discussed above, it is not the top-of-the-line Sport trim but the mid-level Premium Luxury trim that gets two engines to choose from with the second engine packing in more power than the one placed in the Sport trim. In simple words, all three trims get the 2.0L Turbo 4-cylinder engine as standard and the Premium Luxury trim gets the 2.7L Dual Volute Turbocharged 4-cylinder engine as optional.

The 2.0L Turbo 4 Cylinder in the Cadillac CT4 produces a good 237 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, which are acceptable figures for a compact sedan. The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission with electronic control and overdrive function. Getting an overdrive function means you can maintain higher speeds at lower RPMs. So basically you go faster while also preserving fuel economy and this is a very intelligent feature.

With the 2.7L Dual Volute Turbocharged 4-cylinder and 10 speed automatic in play, the power figures jump up to 310hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. This engine also redlines at higher RPMs and the torque sits on a wider RPM band as well. The CT4 gets the very comfortable MacPherson Strut suspension setup and the Sport trim gets Brembo brakes which provide enhanced stopping power. Overall, the CT4 is a composed sedan that handles both curves and straight roads very well. The Rear wheel drive setup makes it lively and you can always stick the tail out in a drift when you are in the mood for mischief.

The competition between the compact luxury sedans is cut-throat and the differences between them are just as wide as a bottleneck. Still, it’s quite surprising that the Cadillac can’t hold its metal despite producing so much more power and having ten gears in its transmission. The Cadillac, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz all get an option of upgrading to all-wheel drive which puts up the price tag to roughly $45,500 for all of them. The Audi A$ gets all-wheel drive as standard on all its trims. As such, the BMW seems to be the most agile because it is definitely well engineered. The Mercedes does disappoint a bit because it is the lightest and yet in sharp contrast, also the slowest.

2022 Cadillac CT4 Fuel Economy

8.0/10

When it comes to luxury sedans, the concept of good fuel economy doesn’t exist. However, with the engine performance being so cut-throat between the competition, it’ll be good to take a look at the fuel economy figures in the anticipation that we get a clear winner here. We have considered the larger 2,7L engine throughout as the Premium Luxury trim with this engine is the most desirable model and the price point sits at a very competitive position with the other rivals. So the 2.7L Dual Volute engine in the Cadillac CT4 gives out a mileage of 20mpg on city roads and 30mpg on Highways which is a sigh of relief since these are very fuel-efficient figures. The CT4 gives out a combined range of 25 mpg and has a 17-gallon fuel tank.

Luckily, the BMW races ahead of the competition here and how nicely it has managed to do that. Not only is it the quickest across the line, but also the most fuel-efficient on the road. The best part of it all is that it has almost a gallon smaller fuel tank than the Cadillac CT4 and still offers a 50 mile greater range than the Cadillac. The Mercedes C Class once again fares poorly with the smallest fuel tank. However, it offers more mileage than the Cadillac.

2022 Cadillac CT4 Interior

9.0/10

Cadillacs have always been a benchmark of luxury as they drive around the Bureaucrats of America. The CT4 extends that sense of luxury and houses one of the prettiest interiors in any compact luxury sedan. The interiors go for an all-black tone which is a standard concept for compact luxury sedans as the duo-tone interiors with the lighter tones are generally reserved for the mid-size and large-size sedans to make them look more luxurious. However, you can still opt for different shades of upholstery like tan, beige, and magenta.

The Luxury trim gets Leatherette upholstery while the higher two trims are done in genuine leather. The overall cabin looks very similar to that of the BMW 3 series, with even the gear lever being a 100 percent replica. The Sports trim gets rid of that gear lever and goes for a sporty knob with distinct shift positions. Furthermore, the Sports trim gets a leather-wrapped wheel and Magnesium pedals, and an 18-way adjustable power driver seat with good bolstering. The Premium Luxury trim differentiates itself from the base trim by providing ambient lighting which is desirable enough. The seats are good and comfortable in both rows but the rear has cramped legroom.

The BMW 3 Series again comes out as the roomiest sedan as well. With a cargo capacity of 17 cubic feet, it is way larger than the Cadillac CT4. The Cadillac does manage to keep up with the rivals but it loses big on rear row space. With those dimensions, it is definitely going to be a clumsy affair in the rear seats of the Cadillac and it’s preferable to seat two rather than three. The seats in the rear also sit very low and the middle seat has a huge hump which is a big disadvantage. Some of the key interior features are:

  • Leather Seating Surfaces with Mini-Perforated inserts
  • 2-way adjustable head restraints front and rear
  • Sill plate cover in Bright finish for front door opening
  • Steering wheel controls mounted audio, phone, and cruise control
  • Gauge cluster, dual digital Driver Information Center display (Upgradeable to (UDV) 12" diagonal HD color reconfigurable driver cluster)
  • Driver Mode Selector
  • Climate control, dual-zone automatic with humidity sensor
  • inside rearview auto-dimming mirror
  • Interior ambient lighting

How intuitive is the infotainment system of the Cadillac CT4?

The infotainment system on the Cadillac CT4 looks straight out of the BMW 3 series. It is an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with the latest CUE software. The Apple CarPlay and Android Auto interfaces come standard, as does an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot. Cadillac offers navigation on all models. It comes bundled with a 14-speaker Bose stereo system that replaces the car's standard eight-speaker arrangement.

The infotainment system is quite wide and legible from where you are seated. It’s apt to respond to touch and is not at all laggy. One peculiar feature is the tuning and volume knobs for the infotainment system jutting out from the dashboard at a position below the infotainment system. As a small detail refreshes for the 2022 model, those CT4s which are equipped with the 2.7L engine will get rid of those buttons. This means that the buttons will be gone for the Premium Luxury trim if you buy it with the bigger engine. Some of the key features of the infotainment system are:

  • AM/FM stereo with 8" diagonal HD color information display
  • Natural Voice Recognition
  • Phone Integration with Wireless Apple CarPlay/Wireless Android Auto capability for compatible phone
  • Cadillac user experience with embedded navigation
  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot capable
  • SD Card Reader located in front center console storage compartment
  • HD reverse camera
  • Premium 8-speaker system (Upgradeable to (UQS) Bose premium Surround Sound 14-speaker audio system)

2022 Cadillac CT4 Exterior

9.0/10

The exteriors of the Cadillac are in sync with the design language of other Cadillac and thus it exudes a strong character of luxury from whichever corner you view it. The headlamps are notable from a mile’s distance with the drooping side accents that are the LED daytime running lamps. These same DRLs keep extending further to even become fog lamps. The intake grilles and vents are nicely done and give a very sporty appeal.

On the back, the Cadillac somewhat gives out a striking resemblance to the old Jaguar XJ with the elongated tail lamps. Seems like Cadillac took a lot of inspiration from others while designing this car, but it still has a personality of its own. You get a lot of finish options for the wheels like Sterling Silver, Diamond Cut, Midnight Silver, and Dark Android Glass while also being able to choose whether you want 18 inch or 19-inch wheels.

All the compact sedans sit within very similar dimensions. If one is to see it that way, then it is quite disappointing for the Cadillac to not be able to offer a spacious cabin in comparison to the BMW and the Mercedes. Another quite surprising take is the inability of the Mercedes to perform despite being the lightest amongst the competition. At this point, it is only the looks of the Mercedes C class which can persuade someone to get it for their garage. Some of the key exterior features are:

  • Active Aero Grille Shutters
  • LED Headlamps with Headlamp control, automatic on/off with tunnel detection
  • LED Taillamps with a red outer lens
  • Heated power-adjustable, body-colored outside mirrors with manual-folding and driver-side auto-dimming with integrated turn signal indicators
  • Rainsense wipers
  • All season 18” tires

2022 Cadillac CT4 Safety

8.0/10

The Cadillac CT4 offers a string of safety features as standard across all trims and doesn’t compromise a bit. This has led to it getting good test ratings all the time. One can also never question the build quality of a Cadillac as they are built like a tank. The Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving feature which is available as an optional extra is also very well-calibrated. ABS and ESP along with traction control are standard for all trims. Some of the key safety features include:

  • Front Pedestrian Braking and Automatic emergency braking
  • Airbags, dual-stage frontal seat-mounted side-impact for driver and front passenger; knee for driver and front passenger; head-curtain for all outboard seating positions with rollover protection
  • Rear Park Assist
  • HD Rear Vision Camera
  • Forward Collision Alert
  • Seat belts, 3-point, driver and front passenger includes seat belt pretensioners
  • Buckle to Drive prevents the vehicle from being shifted out of Park until the driver seat belt is fastened
  • Teen Driver, a configurable feature that lets you activate customizable vehicle settings associated with a key fob, to help encourage safe driving behavior. It can limit certain available vehicle features, and it prevents certain safety systems from being turned off. An in-vehicle report card gives you information on driving habits and helps you to continue to coach your new driver
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist

2022 Cadillac CT4 Competition

7.0/10

2022 Cadillac CT4 vs. the BMW 3 Series

Both these cars sit at the same price point, with the same feature set and very similar interiors. However, in terms of performance, the BMW is pure bliss and will give you an adrenaline rush that the Cadillac couldn’t match. Also, the BMW is very fuel-efficient. Both are available in RWD and AWD options. In terms of styling though, the Cadillac is fit for a grown well to do man while the BMW looks like a spoilt brat’s ride. When I say that, I mean it looks rather young and jovial while the CT4 is calm and composed. If performance matters, then the BMW is what you should opt for. Also there is a plug in hybrid trim in the BMW for your environmental concerns which is equally punchy.

2022 Cadillac CT4 vs. the Mercedes-Benz C Class

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is really disappointing but a lot of people will let go of the facts, and just fall in love with how it looks. The Cadillac performs better, is more fuel efficient and offers the same amount of comfort as the Mercedes. Whatever the Mercedes does, the Cadillac does better. Also the Mercedes too is a plug in hybrid which can provide a shot of 20 extra horsepower for a short while. Sure, the Cadillac looks good but if you want a car that everyone appreciates for the way it looks, then the Mercedes is a good catch.

2022 Cadillac CT4 vs. the Audi A4

The Audi is only available as an all wheel drive and that means it is for the serious crowd. If power sliding and drifting is your thing, then you need to set your hands on the rear wheel drive Cadillac CT4. The Audi A4 has been neglected over the years in terms of styling and while other compact sedans employ design languages to look larger, the Audi A4 is starting to look like its miniscule sports coupe sibling, the Audi TT. The Cadillac CT4 is definitely a better buy since the prices for the AUdi rose exponentially as you go for higher level trims.

2022 Cadillac CT4 Final Verdict

The Cadillac CT4 is the only American compact luxury sedan and it really is a looker and performs well. It’s light, which means it is easy to manoeuvre and have some oversteering mischief in. There’s good tech on offer and everything inside has a premium feel to it. The Cadillac is definitely a good buy if you uphold the brand and want to give a shot to American engineering. otherwise, you can always opt for the BMW 3 series which is definitely a better car.
