The CT4-V Blackwing follows in the footsteps of the outgoing ATS-V sedan – which left us in 2018. The new Caddy shares a lot with that car. However, Cadillac has decided to give the new Blackwing more power from the same engine with an upgraded transmission and suspension to make it even more performance-worthy along with improved and larger brakes.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Cadillac offers a promising preview of the car – a luxurious sedan capable of mind-boggling performance. Together with the CT4-V, it aims to launch Cadillac back into the realm of producing high-performance luxury sedans. It also gets a price slash of around $2,600 compared to its predecessor the ATS-V.

Features

The 2022 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing is a single standalone trim with a 3.6L twin-turbocharged V6 mated to a 6-speed automatic under the hood. We Recommend

The 2022 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing is a standalone performance trim line and features only a single trim option. It is only available with the 3.6 L twin-turbocharged engine option, but one can choose between the standard 6-speed manual or an optional 10-speed automatic according to individual preference. There are also a whole lot of available features and customization options to choose from.

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

The All-American sedan will have a 3.6L twin-turbocharged V6 capable of churning out an impressive 472 horsepower and 445 lb-ft of torque. The engine is married to a Tremec six-speed manual, or it can be fitted with an optional 10-speed automatic. The CT4-V can also be equipped with RWD only for some added thrills.

The American manufacturer claims that their “Custom Launch Control with Line Lock” will shoot the Blackwing from 0 to 60 MPH in mere 3.8 seconds, with a top speed of 189 MPH. They have also added Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires to maximize track usability. Moreover, larger and powerful Brembo brake calipers have also been utilized, along with an electronic limited-slip differential. Though these claims are to be taken with a grain of salt, Cadillac seems to be going all out.

The CT4-V also features a Magnetic Ride Control adaptive suspension setup which according to Cadillac scans the road up to 1000 times in a second and adjusts the damping for increased comfort as well as superb ride, handling and driving dynamics. Cadillac has thrown in all the spells and potions to make this vehicle that definitely gives an amazing first impression.

The Cadillac seems underpowered when you compare it with the Alfa Romeo, but the automaker claims that their car is as fast as the Italian with an identical 0-60 time. The BMW is actually the quickest when equipped with the 8-speed automatic transmission. The Mercedes AMG CLA-45, although underpowered but when compared to the others, still manages a quick 0-60 sprint.

How does the 2022 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing handle?

While it is still not sure how the new Blackwing will handle, Caddy has equipped it with the best of accessories, thus ensuring exceptional handling. There is the Magnetic Ride Control adaptive suspension setup which ensures impressive handling and driving dynamics in the differing road conditions. Moreover, the steering is also expected to be just as good while tackling the corners.

The CT4-V Blackwing also comes with bigger wheels and improved aerodynamics, which means it should be better off the line as compared to the outgoing ATS-V along with a fair amount of grip through the tires. Moreover, the larger brakes should also help in stopping the car aggressively. The car also features updated aerodynamics with all the new redesigned front grilles supplying air to the main radiators, cooler, and airflow ducts.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

No information about the fuel economy of the new Blackwing has been revealed by the Manufacturer. However, we do know that the ATS-V, the predecessor to the CT4-V Blackwing, was rated at 17/25/21 MPG for city/highway/combined. However, since the 2022 luxury sedan will offer more power, along with a host of other refinements, fuel economy will surely be affected. We expect it to be less than 21 MPG, but nothing is concrete, as of now.

The Mercedes offers the best fuel economy along with the highest range. The BMW M3 and the Alfa offer similar efficiency figures, however, the BMW falls short in terms of the overall range. The Cadillac is also expected to be somewhere around the same range as these rivals.

Interior
9.0/10

The Blackwing has an interior design similar to the regular CT4 design. The design is striking and showcases an amalgamation of luxury and a track-focused approach. The dashboard looks sporty with a large central infotainment screen. Below that, you can find the AC vents and other buttons; all stacked in two separate rows horizontally. In addition to that, Cadillac has integrated carbon-fiber accents and suede-microfiber accents throughout. Moreover, all the materials are premium and high-quality. The high-performance front seats are upholstered with ‘Mulan and Opus’ Semi-Aniline leather with perforation patterns for maximum comfort. You can also opt for 18-way power-adjustable front driver and passenger’s seats.

Moreover, functions like lumbar massage, along with heated and cooled seats also find their way here. The front row has plenty of space available and by the looks of it, the rear bench seems to be doing okay as well. There are also “torch red” seat belts to further amplify the performance-focused character. The cargo capacity of the Cadillac is 10.7 cubic feet, which is not a whole lot, especially when compared to some of the rivals. But it will hold your groceries, your regular day-to-day items, some luggage, and some backpacks. The rear seats can also be folded to increase the space.

All the cars offer quite a lot of room at the front, BMW being the most spacious. However, when it comes to the rear, both the Blackwing and the Merc offer the least amount of space. The BMW and the Alfa Romeo are somewhat better, though only by a small margin. In terms of cargo volume, the M3 and the Giulia offer the best cargo space, while the CLA 45 comes in next. Unfortunately, the Cadillac offers the worst trunk capacity of the bunch.

Some standout interior features are:

  • Mulan and Opus Semi-Aniline leather high-performance seats
  • 18-way power-adjustable w/ lumbar support, heated and cooled front seats with memory preset
  • V-Serieslogo on the deluxe carpeted floor mats
  • Universal Home Remote
  • Carbon-fiber accents, suede-microfiber accents
  • Torch red seat belts

2022 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing: Infotainment and Connectivity

The Blackwing comes with an 8” infotainment touchscreen which runs on the Cadillac user experience. There is a rotary knob and some physical buttons that can be used to control the functions. Moreover, a 12” diagonal HD reconfigurable gauge cluster offers all the driving data and details about the car.

Features such as heads-up display, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, HD Radio, SiriusXM with 360L, USB ports, navigation with real-time traffic, Bluetooth, 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot, etc are all standard. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also available as optional extras. Finally, Cadillac also adds an AKG premium surround system with 14-speakers.

Highlights of the infotainment system:

  • Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • SiriusXM Radio
  • HD Radio
  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot
  • AKG premium sound system
  • Heads-up display

Exterior
9.0/10

The Blackwing will appear different from the standard CT4. The performance-based sedan looks extremely appealing, with a strong and stylish demeanor. The vertical parts of the headlight flare up the sides and the mesh grille at the front proudly displays the Cadillac logo; the secondary grille and vents also inspire aggression. The rear also sees the angled tail lights being flaunted. A strong body line flows through the sides as well.

There are underbody panels and an optional Carbon Fiber Exterior Package that adds lightweight parts to reduce lift and drag by a slight margin. The Blackwing also comes with forged aluminum wheels with three different options – 18” aluminum wheels with polished/dark android gloss, a satin graphite finish, or a tech bronze finish.

The CLA is the lightest, while the others fall in the same ballpark when it comes to weight. In terms of exterior dimensions, the M3 shows a lot more bulk as compared to others. The Blackwing comes in a close second with only a few inches to spare. Both the CLA and the Giulia appear comparatively smaller from the outside.

Safety
9.0/10

Cadillac has not stressed too much on the safety front of the CT4-V as there are not many standout safety features included with the sedan. That doesn’t mean that the vehicle is unsafe by any means. It is expected to be a very safe vehicle as Cadillac claims that it has worked hard to make a solid chassis for the car with integrated under-hood and overall structural reinforcements. The car is also equipped with the basic safety tech along with the high-tech features listed below as standard -

  • Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Rear Parking Aid
  • Blind Spot Monitor
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Lane Keeping Assist
Final Verdict

The Blackwing is set to hit the dealerships pretty soon and from the looks of it, the sedan is expected to be ground-breaking. Cadillac has mostly focused on the performance and they seem to have delivered, at least on paper. Furthermore, being priced lower than other luxury sedans along with performance figures that are just as impressive, the new CT4-V Blackwing is a perfect recipe to retain the once lost glory of the luxury moniker known as Cadillac.
