Overview

Cadillac is up with its new generation of crossover, replacing the long-running SRX, which begins with XT5. Debuted in November 2015 at Dubai Motor Show and LA Auto Show, the production for the 2017 XT5 started when it was launched back in spring 2016. The new Cadillac XT5 seems like a promising new Crossover Utility Vehicle.

The 2017 XT5 is priced at a few bucks over the SRX, starting at a windows sticker price of $39,395 and goes all the way up to $62,895 for the Platinum trim, without options. And on adding the options the price will go even higher.

Engine

7.0/10
“There are crossovers that handle better than the XT5, some that ride better, and others that offer a better combination of both. Add to that straight-line performance that is merely average and the XT5 is far from compelling to drive.”-car and driver

Engine and Transmission

The XT5 carries a 3.6-liter V6 engine under its hood. This big block is able to produce 310 horsepower and 271 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is further coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission, which transfers the power to front two wheels in FWD, and to all the four wheels in AWD models.

XT5 lacks behind all the other cars in terms of power, but it’s more than 15 grand cheaper than the SQ5 and Macan S. Infinity QX comes at 5 grand cheaper than XT5 but still produces more power than the XT5.

Acceleration

As you might have expected by now that the XT5 might offer slower acceleration than the competition, because of the less powerful engine. Cadillac does a 0-60 mph in 6.6 seconds, compared to sub-6 second timings achieved by other cars. The engine provides enough power to the crossover making it sweep across the tight corners and highways.

Infinity QX50 does 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds and the Audi SQ5, Porsche Macan achieve it in 5.1 seconds because of a 3.0-liter turbo engine. XT5 doesn’t come with a turbocharged and supercharged engine.

Braking

Cadillac XT5 has got firm brake pedals and good stopping ability. Brakes in this car are really good and bring you from 60 mph to down to a standstill in just 128 feet of distance, considering that the car weighs less than the competition. Infiniti is even coupled hundred pounds lighter than the Cadillac but both are few hundred pounds lighter than SQ5 and Macan.

Ride and Handling

The driving experience in the XT5 is one of the good ones. Around the turns, the XT5 feels sharp and in proper control. The crossover has got a few tricks up its sleeve to save some fuel. The V6 engine shuts down its two cylinders when extra power is not needed.

The engine is quiet and you don’t hear the growling unless you push hard on that pedal. It stays calm on the busy roads but might scare the crap out of your cat if you put paddle to the metal.

Fuel Economy

5.8/10
Cadillac XT5’s fuel economy is better than the SQ5, Macan and QX50. Cadillac XT5 gives you a city gas mileage of 19 miles per gallon and the same gallon of fuel will take you 27 miles far on a straight highway. This brings the combined gas mileage to 22 mpg, compared to the 19 mpg in Audi SQ5 and Porsche Macan and 20 mpg in Infiniti.

“The first edition of the 2017 Cadillac XT5 features a quality cabin that you'll enjoy climbing into. There are premium materials throughout the interior, including leather, suede, and wood. The cabin is well-insulated, so you won't have to worry about outside noise disrupting conversations with your passengers.”- cars.usnews

Seating and Comfort

The cabin is really spacious because of the longer wheelbase. The floor is flat for the rear middle seat so that’s something good. The legroom for both the front and rear seats is good enough for you to relax. It comes with reclining rear seats in an optional interior package. While the front seats are 8-way power adjustable bucket seats. The middle seat in the rear also houses the two cupholders for the rare passengers along with the armrest.

“The XT5 reflects the ongoing evolution of Cadillac's Art and Science design philosophy. Despite a strong family resemblance to the SRX, the XT5 weighs nearly 300 pounds less, is on a new platform and is tighter, tauter and stronger. That tautness was a theme in the XT5's exterior design, where body lines are crisper and the nose uses a new jeweled headlight design.”- Kelley Blue Book

Dimension and Weight

Talking about the weight of the Cadillac XT5, it comes with a curb weight of 4061 lbs. and gross weight of 6001 lbs. Length of the car is few inches more than the SQ5, Macan and QX50 at 189.5 inches. The width of the car is 4 inches more than Infinity at 75 inches but is 0.2 inches and 1.1 inches smaller than SQ5 and Macan respectively.

XT5 stands higher than the others at 66 inches, compared to 65.3 inches of SQ5, 63.3 inches height of Macan and 62.7 inches height of Infinity CUV. Ground clearance of the XT5 is at 7.8 inches so large speed bump won’t scratch the base of the car. Should be good for off-roading too. The 112.5 inches of wheelbase of the car does help in creating a spacious cabin for the car.

XT5 is a successor to the Cadillac XRS and it looks like a worthy upgrade. The new Cadillac design on the XT5 looks great and the car doesn’t feel large. It feels like a crossover. I personally like the design of the car you think that you will like it too.

Competition

Cadillac XT5 VS Audi SQ5 Premium Plus

Audi’s SQ5 Premium Plus starts at a 14 grand more than the windows sticker price for the base trim of Cadillac XT5. For that 14 grand more, you get a turbocharged engine which produces 44 horsepower more than XT5 in the base model. An even better, more premium interior in the SQ5 and the driving experience is amazing in the Audi. Their Quattro drivetrain just makes this car to have more control on the corners. But all that is for 14 grand more. So if you got money, Audi is the way to go.

Cadillac XT5 VS Porsche Macan S

Porsche Macan S comes at an even higher price at 15.1 grand more than the base trim price of the XT5. Porsche comes with 30 more horsepower under the hood, 1.5-second faster 0-60 mph timing, a premium interior that is more elegant than the XT5 and the Porsche Macan S.

You know the car will be sporty if it has the Porsche badge on it, regardless of the category. Yes, the Porsche if costly but I would choose it over any other SUV, any day. Porsche feels quick and sporty than the XT5. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that the Macan is a sporty SUV.

Cadillac XT5 VS Infiniti QX50

Well, other two were the sporty SUVs which comes at much higher price than the XT5 and QX50. These two, on the other hand, falls right in a head-to-head competition with each other. Both fall in the same price range, even the QX50 comes at a price lower than the XT5. And for the lower price, you get a more powerful engine that is producing 15 more horsepower than the XT5 and is 0.8 seconds quicker too.

The interior is leather and looks amazing, unlike QX50. You get a feeling of a premium SUV right on the moment when you step in. Cargo space is also more than the QX50 and also the cabin space. The driving experience is almost identical in both. It really comes up to your own preference when choosing one of the two.

Final Verdict

I must say that the 2017 Cadillac XT5 is a nice upgrade over the SRX. The car still is premium for a lower than competition price and the driving is fun in this car. Yes, the car lacks behind the competition in terms of power and acceleration but let’s be honest, you won’t take this car for a track day. So the extra power and quicker acceleration don’t matter. The thing that matters is the well-built interior and comfortable ride experience which only gets even better in the Platinum trim level.
