Cadillac has built its reputation on the epitome of luxury and comfort. Their focus has always been around the rich customers who like to be chauffeured. Well, to break these stereotypes, Cadillac did some tinkering under the hood and created the Cadillac XTS Platinum V-Sport. The same old luxury saloon with a new, aggressive heart inside. They threw in twin turbochargers and boosted the power figures from 304HP to 410HP in the same 3.6L V6 mill. Equally luxurious as its non performance trims, the V-sport has made the XTS interesting behind the steering too.

Considering the performance figures and the price bracket, the V-Sport falls in the territory of BMW 550i xDrive, Lexus LS500 F-Sport RWD and the Genesis G90 Ultimate.

2019 Cadillac XTS V-Sport Sedan Engine and Performance

6.9/10

The V-Sport's engine is a much better fit for the XTS's large-luxury attitude. It provides effortless power both off the line and when accelerating to pass. - Car and Driver

Engine and Transmission

The engine in the V-Sport is a performance-tuned, twin turbocharged version of the same 3.6L V6 mill found in the lower trims of the XTS series. This motor puts out a hefty 410 HP of power and 369 ft-lbs of torque at the crank. A 6-Speed shiftable automatic drivetrain transfers the power to all four wheels.

Refinement is the key point of this motor, However, press the pedal all the way to the floor and you will hear the fire-breather come to life. The maximum power comes at 6000 RPM which is very close to the red line on the tachometer. Nonetheless, the torque band is evenly split across the Rev-range and will offer plenty of power when required.

The competition lunges ahead of the V-Sport in terms of engine performance figures. However, lets not forget that the V-Sport is the lightest car among the competitors. It means that, this could turn out to be a totally different story on the tarmac.

Acceleration

Flat-footing the accelerator will plunge the V-Sport to 60MPH from a standstill in 5.2 seconds which is average for a car in this price bracket. It breaches the quarter mile mark in a 13.6 seconds. For a full size luxury sedan, these figures are quite impressive. The acceleration may not be jaw dropping but enough to give you the chills.

The BMW M550i is blisteringly fast and leaves the other three competitors in the dust when it comes to outright acceleration. It is followed by the Lexus which just inches ahead of the V-Sport leaving the Genesis G90 at the end.

Braking

The V-Sport makes no compromises in the braking department. It houses the Brembo performance brakes with 4-wheel anti lock system which bring the car to a halt in a mere 118ft from 60MPH. This is really impressive, considering that the car weighs over 4200 lbs. The brake pedal travel is a little more than normal but it is not discomforting. The pads seem to work fade-free while applying brakes.

The Cadillac V-Sport shines brighter than any other car in this department. It has the advantage of being the lightest car which enables it to stop in the shortest distance from 60-0MPH. However, the brakes on the BMW offer the best feedback with an appropriate amount of bite.

Ride and Handling

The V-Sport houses a hydraulic assisted steering that offers precise feedback and promotes confidence at high speeds. Although, it might feel a little too light in weight while doing triple-digit speeds.

The suspension setup is soft in nature ensuring plush rides. The MagneRide suspension stiffens up when the speed is increased in order to contain the Body Roll. It glides over bumps quite smoothly and the overall ride quality gives a sense of luxury with a pinch of sportiness blended in it. Cadillac has done a commendable job in the suspension department.

The transmission, otherwise smooth, gets laggy while overtaking. It takes quite some time to throw the gear down before taking off. To sum it up, the Cadillac V-Sport performs like an old man who is young at heart. Ride quality is calm and composed until you push the pedal to the floor and see a change in its personality.

2019 Cadillac XTS V-Sport Sedan Fuel Economy

The Cadillac V-Sport returns 16 MPG in the city and 23 MPG on the highway. These figures are below average for this segment. Nonetheless, let's give it to Cadillac for attempting to inculcate sportiness in their luxury sedan for a small price of mileage. The performance on offers if definitely worth the drop in fuel economy.

Lexus returns the best mileage out of the four cars above, followed by the BMW. The Cadillac and the Genesis return almost similar mileage and are placed at the last of this comparison. This result can be due to the weight of these vehicles.

Seating and Comfort

Creature Comfort has always been the forte of Cadillac which built its identity in the automotive world. There are no compromises in the V-sport either. There is more than adequate room for 5 passengers. The seats are quite comfortable with integrated massaging function on all 4 of them. However, they still lack the sheer comfort offered by its German rivals.

The touch-sensitive controls are clunky and the piano black finish in some spots is prone to smudges. There are some plastics that feel cheap and do not complement the segment of this car. However, they are concealed quite well and you won't find one unless you go all Indiana Jones on it.

The Genesis leads this department when pitted against other contenders in terms of maximum room. The Cadillac follows it next leaving the BMW and the Lexus behind. So, if you need to stretch out your legs in the rear seats, the Genesis is the one to go for.

Infotainment

The V-Sport comes with a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system as standard. The display is crisp and sharp but the touch screen unit is late to respond which could be troublesome to operate while driving. The infotainment offers features like:

  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • 4-USB Ports
  • Bluetooth System
  • Inbuilt Wi-Fi Hotspot
  • Universal Home Remote (3 - channel)
  • Rear vision camera with surround view

Cargo Space

Cadillac has made enough room in the V-sport to carry the luggage of 5 comfortably. You can also fold the rear seats down to make a flat-bed and uncover a gigantic amount of space, an option missing in most of the large-sized luxury sedans. So, the XTS-V Sport can slide out of corners with a lamp in its trunk.

The BMW might possess the biggest trunk out of the rivals but unlike the V-Sport, the rear seats cannot be folded in it. Hence, V-Sport comes out to be a better choice in this department. The Lexus and the Genesis are not even close to the Cadillac and the BMW.

2019 Cadillac XTS V-Sport Sedan Competition

Cadillac XTS Platinum V-Sport vs BMW M550i xDrive:

BMW M550i is a hardcore performance oriented car with a mild focus on luxury. Unlike the V-Sport, it does not give the sense of ultra luxury to the passengers. However, the driver will be surrounded with a host of technology and features. The BMW leaves the Caddie miles behind in a quarter mile drag. That said, if sportiness is your preference with compromises in luxury, BMW is your pick. If you want sheer luxury with some sportiness blended in it, then the Cadillac will prove to be worthier.

Cadillac XTS Platinum V-Sport vs Lexus LS 500 F Sport RWD:

The V-sport is smaller in dimensions than the Lexus. This translates to less room inside the V-sport. However, step inside the Cadillac and you won't find any criteria to complain about the cabin space. The Lexus is a tad faster than the Cadillac in spite of weighing much more than the latter. It is also a RWD as compared to the V-Sport which is an AWD. Lexus is everything that the Cadillac is, just better. If spending almost 10k over the MSRP of the Cad sounds convincing to you, then Lexus is your pick.

Cadillac XTS Platinum V-Sport vs Genesis G90 Ultimate:

In spite of carrying a sporty engine, the Genesis is a full-fetched Luxury car. It's sluggish handling and the less responsive engine makes it a chauffeur driven car. The G90 focuses on the rear seat comfort and luxury more. The Cadillac is smaller, lighter and faster than the Genesis, has a better suspension and braking setup. On top of all this, you also get the legendary rear-seat hospitality that the Cadillac is known to offer.

2019 Cadillac XTS V-Sport Sedan Final Verdict

Cadillac has managed to create a multi-purpose car that serves the purpose of all kinds of people -those who prefer to drive and those who prefer to be chauffeured around. It offers all of these in a price bracket much cheaper than its German rivals while offering similar capabilities as them. It has all sorts of luxury features on offer and is very impressive as a complete package.
