Chevy’s new Blazer may not essentially be the body-on-frame Blazer that one expected it to be when the rumor mill began regarding GM bringing back the moniker, but instead, the new generation Blazer offers a complete package to make it one of the most promising and valuable crossover with the Chevrolet bowtie with its strong performance, sporty appearance, great ride quality, and a premium cabin, basically everything one could ask from their compact crossover.

The 2019 Chevrolet Blazer got a lot of changes and comes with a new attractive styling and loaded interior with a long list of infotainment features. The Blazer nametag has made a return to the market after ending its run as an S-10 Blazer back in 2005, but a 15-year absence has made the rivals stronger and reach more people. The prices are set to begin at $29,995, which in fact undercuts its direct rivals, which include Ford Edge, 2019 Honda Passport, and 2019 Nissan Murano.

Which Trim should you buy?

Chevrolet has offered quite a long list of options in the lineup. The LT V6 trim offers quite a few safety functions and driver aids as standard along with the meaty V6 engine, and since the performance from the base engine isn’t really exciting, it is best to opt for this trim along with the AWD drivetrain for added practicality.

2019 Chevrolet Blazer Engine and Performance

8.0/10

The 2019 Chevrolet Blazer gets two engine options. The base L trim is offered with a 2.5 I4 engine and gives an output of 193 hp with an FWD system. The second engine option offered is the 3.6L V6, which offers an output of 308 hp and produces maximum torque output of 270 lb-ft. The engines come equipped with a 9-speed automatic gearbox, which is pretty smooth and quick.

No doubt the engine is quite powerful and fast with the gear shift, hence delivering a terrific performance. NVH levels of the car are also commendable. The SUV gets various options for terrain selection. However, the Sport mode improves the performance of the SUV significantly by improving the engine power output. The SUV reaches the 60 mph mark from a standstill in 8.2 seconds, which is not the best in the segment.

The EcoBoost engine under the hood of the Ford Edge is clearly the best performer in this comparison as it offers class-leading engine output, which results in super-quick acceleration performance. The Toyota Highlander is only marginally slower than the Blazer and costs a bit more as well, while the GMC Acadia shares the powertrain with the Blazer and hence has similar performance to offer.

How well does the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer handle?

The power delivery and aerodynamics of the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer are impressive. The 2019 Blazer is an SUV that boasts style with massive power. The car gets various road modes which make driving comfortable in various situations. The Sport mode, when activated, modifies the transmission and suspension tuning that reduces body roll, which altogether improves the stability during high speed.

There are also other modes like Tour mode, Off-road mode, and Tow mode which help the driver scale different terrains. The Tour mode is recommended on paved roads and highways, while the Off-road mode can be used on unpaved roads. The Tow mode is especially for towing purposes in which AWD mode is activated with reduced shift cycling. These different types of modes make the Blazer a really versatile SUV.

Braking Performance

The 2019 Chevrolet Blazer comes equipped with extremely reliable and capable big brake rotors, helping the car to stop in less time. Along with the number of safety features that this SUV gets, the braking system is also quite impressive. The car gets 12.64-inch brake rotors in the front wheels, while the brake rotors in the rear are 12.40 inches. The SUV takes 126 feet to reach a halt from 60 mph, which is an average figure in the segment.

Both the GM SUVs employ identical braking setups and hence have very similar braking distances as well. In fact, the other two rivals too offer similar stopping distances as well, with the Toyota Highlander traveling the farthest distance, which is just a couple of feet more than the Blazer, while the Ford Edge also travels just a foot more.

2019 Chevrolet Blazer Fuel Economy

5.0/10

With clever engine start/stop technology as standard across the lineup, one might expect great efficiency from the 2019 Blazer, but sadly, that’s not the case here. The combined fuel economy of 24 mpg from the base four-cylinder engine is pretty average for the segment. The larger V6, on the other hand, gets cylinder deactivation and is rated for 20/26/22 for city/highway/combined by the EPA. The large 19.4-gallon fuel tank is a boon though, offering a pretty long driving range and reduces the visits to the gas stations.

The smaller capacity and turbocharged engine from Ford is the most frugal of the lot, offering 1 mpg more in combined conditions than what the Blazer offers with its base engine. The Toyota Highlander has the highest fuel consumption in the competition and offers only 22 mpg combined. The GMC Acadia consumes marginally more fuel than the Blazer despite sharing its powertrain and hence has a lower range to offer as well.

2019 Chevrolet Blazer Interior

7.0/10

The 2019 Chevrolet Blazer comes with a loaded interior and a completely refreshed dashboard. It is a completely fresh product, resulting in being a lot more appealing to the customers. For starters, the SUV gets heated and ventilated front and rear seats. The rear seats offered in 2019 Blazer's feel spacious and soft with impressive backrest recliner functionality. Keyless ignition and dual-zone climate control are also included in the package.

Features like a rear-seat reminder and adjustable rear sliding seats are standard with the SUV. The SUV comes with an ample amount of space in the cabin. Along with space, the brand has put effort into making the SUV comfortable and stylish. The overall NVH levels inside the cabin and the insulation from the external environment are quite impressive.

2019 Chevrolet Blazer Exterior

8.0/10

The 2019 Chevrolet Blazer doesn’t resemble its predecessor and went on a path of a completely new and modern design. With the upgrades in the SUV’s design, the Blazer doesn't fail to amaze us. Its aggressive exterior definitely draws attention from the people on the roads. It does not try to be a rugged SUV like almost every other crossover and instead employs a very striking sporty approach that is reminiscent of the muscle car attributes of the Camaro.

The muscular and angular body lines with sharp LED headlights and alloy wheels all together look very striking. The hands-free programmable tailgate and active aero shutters are something that one hardly ever finds in this segment. The 20-inch alloy wheels create an appealing side profile and blend pretty well. The SUV weighs 4,078 lbs and stands 7.4 inches above the ground.

Although the Acadia and the Highlander are just marginally longer than the Blazer, they manage to fit in an additional row of seats. They also offer a larger trunk despite the shorter wheelbase. Ford Edge is the smallest one here, while the Acadia is the largest and yet weighs the least. Both Edge and Highlander offer the best ground clearance, while the GM twins have a marginally lower ride height. Standout exterior features include:

  • Automatic high-intensity discharge (HID) bi-functional headlamps
  • LED taillights
  • Outside heated power-adjustable mirrors w/driver-side auto-dimming and turn signal indicators
  • Rear power programmable hands-free liftgate w/emblem projection

2019 Chevrolet Blazer Safety

The brand has made every effort to make the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer safe and score high points in terms of the overall safety the car has to offer. The 2019 Chevrolet Blazer performs really well as it scores a perfect 5-star rating from the NHTSA. It also manages to score well in tests conducted by the IIHS for the 2019 model year.

The SUV comes with a various number of features like lane change alert, blind zone alert, traction control, all of which are standard on the vehicle. Add to that the high-resolution 360-degree view camera which gives a great view of the surroundings when parking in a tight spot, making it a safe vehicle. A highlight of the most prominent safety and driver assistance features has been listed below.

  • Forward Collision Alert
  • Lane Change Alert
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Blind Zone alert
  • Forward Automatic Braking

2019 Chevrolet Blazer Competition

7.8/10

2019 Chevrolet Blazer vs Ford Edge

The biggest rival for the Blazer in this segment, the Ford Edge, offers a lot of value with its powerful and frugal turbocharged four-cylinder engine that offers an impressive acceleration performance. It also offers a larger cabin and a more spacious trunk with the materials and builds quality being on par with the Chevrolet. The technology is plenty for both the crossovers, but the sportier handling of the Edge feels worth the minor additional cost.

2019 Chevrolet Blazer vs GMC Acadia

The premium alternative to the Blazer, the GMC Acadia, offers similar performance, frugality, and towing performance with hardly any difference in terms of braking performance as well. That being, the larger cabin with three rows of seats and the bigger boot makes the Acadia feels more spacious, while the materials and build quality is pretty much the same as well. With hardly any price difference between the two, the GMC Acadia is the winner of the two.

2019 Chevrolet Blazer vs Toyota Highlander

One of the most popular crossovers of the segment, the Toyota Highlander, is the most expensive one here and yet does not offer the performance to match up with its premium price tag. Although the cabin is more spacious in the Highlander, the Blazer has a higher fuel efficiency to offer. With a higher performance V6 available with the Blazer, we feel the Blazer is the more practical option here.

2019 Chevrolet Blazer Final Verdict

With the 2019 upgrade, the Chevrolet Blazer has re-entered the market with a fresh new look and offers an all-new package that carries on the legacy of its legendary predecessor. It continues to amaze us with its exceptional performance and in-cabin experience. Be it daily driving needs or a sporty enthusiast, the brand has several options for the customers. With the different modes available with the SUV, it would be not wrong to say that it is a reliable vehicle for any kind of terrain. All in all, the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer is a capable and versatile machine with comparable prices to its rivals.
