Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Launched first in the year 2019 Chevrolet Blazer RS is still in its early years and needless to say, gets no major changes for 2021. However, Chevrolet has added some driver-assistance systems and a few minor feature updates for this model year. Its sporty exterior styling, Camaro-inspired interiors, and athletic character stand tall as its core USP though. At a starting MSRP of $40,800, the 2021 Chevrolet Blazer RS does make big promises in its segment. However, the similarly skilled Ford Edge ST and Mini Countryman JCW give it a really tough time.

As the sportiest Blazer on offers, the RS gets some unique composition and thus stands apart from other trims in its lineup. Considered as a standalone performance model, the Blazer RS gets a standard 3.6-liter V6 along with stiffer springs for optimal performance. Even on the outside, blacked-out exterior accents, unique rims, and RS badging help it stand out. Available with standard FWD, the prices for the 2021 Blazer RS kick in at $40,800 while the AWD model is priced at $43,700.

Which Trim should you buy?

As a standalone trim, there’s not much to fiddle around the Blazer RS. However, for its price, the RS comes aptly loaded with performance upgrades and everyday creature comforts. If you still need more, an enhanced “Convenience and Driver Assistance Package II” and “Driver Confidence package II” are also available with the Blazer RS.

Engine and Performance

The Chevrolet Blazer RS derives all its juice from a 3.6-liter V6 which is good for 308 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. A 9-speed automatic transmission sends all that power either to the front or all four wheels. Apart from the RS, the “Premier” model also comes standard with the V pot and also performs its duties in the likes of Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia Denali.

With 308 hp on tap, the Blazer RS packs adequate power for its sporty business. Power comes in quick and smooth during initial take-offs and the engine loves being pulled. Every time you indulge in a quick highway passing, the linear torque delivery comes in clean and strong. The 9-speed automatic transmission never misses a beat too and the exhaust note seems somewhat tweaked and sounds more like a pony car than a crossover.

On an open stretch, the punchy V6 engine is capable of pushing the 2021 Chevrolet Blazer RS from 0-60 MPH in just 6.3 seconds. While that figure does seem promising for a midsize crossover, but on paper. In reality, the RS is the slowest among the pack here which is led by the Mini Countryman JCW’s blistering 0-60 run of 4.4 seconds.

Even the other two rivals, the Ford Edge ST and Volvo XC60 T6 are quicker to 0-60 than the Chevy. Both the Ford and Volvo benefit from their added power and torque although marginally. The Mini on the other hand is the lightest among the lot here aces the acceleration test carrying the least hp count at 301. Moreover, there’s no questioning JCW’s racing pedigree.

How well does the 2021 Chevrolet Blazer RS handle?

Be it city driving or some quick highway fun, the Blazer RS’s dynamic capability never fails to impress. Although it's not as sporty as a Mini JCW Countryman but offers a good balance between comfort and athleticism. It gets 40% stiffer springs which keep it firm and composed be it on a straight highway or twisty sections.

Now because of the sportier suspension, city comfort does get compromised to some extent with interactions with smaller obstacles at lower speeds reflecting inside the cabin. At higher speeds though the RS seems very confident and showcases good high-speed maneuverability. The steering has a good weight and feedback and is precise enough to keep the RS pointed in the right direction.

2021 Chevrolet Blazer RS Braking Performance

In terms of braking, the Blazer RS comes with ventilated discs and ABS at all four corners. The brake pedal feels responsive and confident with a good amount of firmness and bite into it. In emergency braking conditions, the 2021 Chevrolet Blazer RS stops from 60-0 MPH in 126 feet. Though the braking distance is not the best in class, the RS stays planted with no signs of fade or nose-dive even under hard braking.

Among the competition here, the Blazer RS sits at the bottom of the table in terms of braking performance. Surprisingly, even the heaviest of the lot, the Volvo XC60 is more efficient in terms of braking compared to the Blazer RS. Among the competition though, the Ford Edge leads the pack with its shortest 108 feet stopping distance from 60-0 MPH. Thanks to Ford’s bigger set of brakes and effective weight distribution. Surprisingly though, despite being the lightest here, the Mini Countryman JCW fails to impress.

Fuel Economy

Despite its higher performance adrenaline, the Blazer RS stands strong and confident on the daily-driving promises of its segment. Even with a naturally-aspirated 3.6-liter V6, the 2021 Chevrolet Blazer RS returns a healthy 22 MPG combined fuel economy which is the class-average and surely livable with. Especially, with a fun and sporty package like the Blazer RS.

Among the segment rivals here, the Blazer RS is almost as economical as the Volvo XC60 and the Ford Edge ST. No wonder, being the lightest in the competition here, the Mini Countryman JCW offers a class-leading 26 MPG combined fuel economy. The furious Mini also gains from its smaller 2.0-liter turbo engine which packs the right blend of power and efficiency.

On the inside, the Chevrolet Blazer RS gets the same layout as the regular Blazer. However, it does get red inserts around the A.C vents and alongside red contrast stitching on the seats and dashboard, reminding you of its athletic reflexes. On the inside, the cabin feels adequately roomy and the black theme works really well with the sporty cabin layout. The star of the show is the Camaro-style turbine air vents placed at the lower end of the center tunnel which look very sporty and instantly catch attention.

The overall build quality feels nice and solid and the leather-surfacing on the dashboard and door panels along with the contrast red-stitching, adds a premium flavor into the cabin. As standard, the Blazer RS comes with leather upholstery and power-adjustable and heated front seats. The seats are wide and comfortable with good bolstering and under-thigh support and also offer a commanding view outside. At the rear, a sliding and reclining rear bench is as comfortable as the chairs at the front.

Along with an appealing interior presentation, the 2021 Blazer RS also pleases with its overall cabin space. Although it’s not as rich in terms of front and second-row room as the Ford Edge, the RS offers ample space for taller occupants to fit in comfortably.

Even in terms of cargo space, the Blazer RS is only left behind by the Ford here. While the Edge ST offers a class-leading 39.2 cu-ft of cargo area, the Blazer RS unfolds 30.5 cu-ft of storage at its back. Thankfully, the former also gets a wide-opening boot-lid and has a comfortable loading height as well. Some of the interior features in the 2021 Chevrolet Blazer RS are:

  • Leather upholstery
  • Power front seats with heating
  • Red interior accents
  • Leather cabin inserts
  • Heated steering
  • Tinted rear windows
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Keyless ignition system
  • Slide and recline rear seats

The system also comes standard with navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a six-speaker audio system. Other amenities include satellite radio, 4 USB ports, Bluetooth streaming, and a 120-volt power outlet.

2021 Chevrolet Blazer RS SUV infotainment screen

The infotainment screen has a good resolution into it and its clean menu offers easy scrolling through different apps. The system is also quick in its responses and is also placed within comfortable reach of the driver. However, in bright sunlight, it does get a tad difficult looking at the screen. Noteworthy infotainment features in the 2021 Chevrolet Blazer RS are:

  • 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Satellite radio
  • Navigation
  • Six-speaker audio system
  • Bluetooth and 4 USB ports
  • 120-volt power outlet
  • Wireless device charging (Optional)

The Blazer RS features a unique black front grille alongside black exterior accents like those on the side skirts and bumpers. Apart from the distinct “RS” badge, it also features unique 20’ inch RS wheels.

The overall darker cosmetic treatment works really well with the Blazer’s profile and seamlessly accentuates its youthfulness with a tint of aggression. Not to forget though, the curvy window-line along with wider hips and a strong shoulder-line add some really strong character into the Blazer. The large grille upfront along with slim headlights and tail lamps also add to the overall drama.

Among the competition though, the Blazer RS is almost identical in proportions to the Ford Edge ST and Volvo XC60. The Mini Countryman, on the contrary, being a Mini has the smallest proportions, however, it does have a distinct flavor of its own. That iconic Mini design is surely unlike anything on the roads.

In terms of overall design language, the Blazer RS does stand out from the bunch here with a balanced mix of style, aggression, and sportiness on its sleeves. The Ford Edge ST and Volvo XC60 in comparison take the slightly traditional route. There’s no denying their presence and appeal though. Some of the exterior features in the 2021 Chevrolet Blazer RS include:

  • Black grille
  • Black exterior body inserts
  • RS badging
  • Unique 20’ inch alloy wheels
  • Heated mirrors
  • Power liftgate
  • Keyless entry
  • Remote engine start

With a midsize SUV that talks primarily about performance, an extensive safety suite is of utmost importance and the 2021 Chevrolet Blazer RS doesn’t miss out on that. As standard, the RS comes with all the advanced safety tech that you could wish for in the segment.

Right off the showroom, the Blazer RS comes with rear park assist, blind-spot monitor, lane-keep assist, forward-collision warning, auto emergency braking, and more. These advanced safety measures also reflect in various crash-test ratings. The 2021 Chevrolet Blazer received an overall “Good” rating from the IIHS and a “5-Star” rating from NHTSA. Chevrolet Blazer RS Vs Ford Edge ST

With a similar intent, the Ford Edge ST is very similar to the Blazer RS in terms of overall character. Though both the cars are equally good in terms of ride and handling, the Ford Edge ST is more powerful and also quicker than the Blazer. In terms of cabin layout, while the RS definitely looks more inviting and happening, the Edge feels more premium and upscale. While both the cars offer a similar economy, the Ford here is the one with better passenger and cargo room.

Ford Edge ST

Chevrolet Blazer RS Vs Mini Countryman JCW

The Mini Countryman JCW is all about spirited performance compared to the wholesome approach of the Blazer RS. Though the Mini here is less powerful and with lesser passenger and cargo room, it's no doubt that it's the quicker of the two. With a lightweight body, the Mini is punchy, athletic, and very responsive on a track or city street. Coming from BMW, the Mini also features a more upscale cabin and is also more economical.

Mini Countryman JCW

Chevrolet Blazer RS Vs Volvo XC60 T6

Priced a bit higher than the Blazer RS and though it has more power than the Chevy here, the Volvo XC60 T6 is more of a comfortable and luxurious city hauler. Yes, with 316 hp, the Volvo is quicker than the Blazer RS when you need it to and is also more comfortable. Even in terms of interiors. The Volvo is far rich in terms of presentation and overall fit and finish. However, the Blazer RS offers more passenger and cargo space and is also more athletic than the Volvo here.

Volvo XC60 T6

Final Verdict

If you are in the market looking for an athletic and sporty mid-size SUV which also looks the part, the Chevrolet Blazer RS won’t disappoint you at all. Apart from its youthful and aggressive looks, the Blazer RS is powerful and punchy and also features an equally inviting cabin layout with a good dose of premiumness. Even in terms of features and safety, the Blazer RS is loaded to the hilt. However, if you wish for a better overall value at the price point, the Ford Edge ST is worth considering as well.
