2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV electric Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Green invasion is here. With the limited petroleum resources in the world, we had to find the alternative fuel to run the cars. Electric power seems to be most efficient alternative fuel resource. Mass production of the electric cars started with the Tesla, back in the 2000s. Now with more car brands have stepped in the electric car market, the competition has become serious. Chevrolet has stepped in this game with its Bolt EV hatchback. Does it outstands its competition? Find out in our review.

In the U.S. market the Chevrolet Bolt EV is competing straight against the Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model 3 and BMW i3. All of which are entry level electric vehicle, offering excellent mile range on single charge of 263 miles, which varies depending on the driving pattern and climate conditions. Before Bolt, you would have to spend $100,000 on Teslas for that kind of mile range.

Overall Rating

This small electric hatchback by Chevrolet is pretty responsive and quick. It is capable of doing a 0-60 mph in under 6.5 seconds, which is definitely impressive considering its windows sticker price. Bolt packs 60 kWh lithium-ion battery pack which produces a whooping 200 horsepower for this small car. For a price point of merely 40 grand, Bolt put other electric cars in shame when it comes to performance.

2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV electric Engine

8.5/10

Bolt EV is a pure electric vehicle without any gasoline engine but an electric transmission. So I can not tell you much cylinder the engine is or what is the capacity of the engine. Rather, I can tell you is about the electric powertrain and battery it packs. Chevrolet Bolt EV has a capacity of 60 kilowatt-hours (kWh) which will go for more than 200 miles on a full charge. Tesla, watch out. This is an electric car so you not have gears to play with. Just press that accelerator to shoot the car in the fast lane. Bolt EV is a Front-Wheel Drive (FWD). The electric motors in the Bolt EV produces 200 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque.

Acceleration

The Chevrolet Bolt EV is quick, like real quick. This small hatchback does the 0-60 mph in under 6.5 seconds and further reaches the quarter mile mark in 14.9 seconds. There is no denying that the electric cars are actually faster than their gasoline powered counterpart, without sucking in a lot of air. And because these are electric cars, they does not produce the CO2 Emission, true eco-friendly.

Braking

The Bolt EV relies on the standard friction brakes in D mode. Which means you don't have to press that break paddle, all you need to do is accelerate or not accelerate. This is why the braking in this car feel so consistent and easy to modulate. Bolt EV covers 116 feet of distance before reaching the 0 mph, straight up from the 60 mph. From that impressive number, and considering the weight of the car at 3563 lbs., we can estimate that the brakes used in this particular car is up to something. Although we do not have the information about the size of the brakes used in this car.

Ride and Handling

The 200 horsepower electric motor provide a healthy dose of thrust. While the batteries placed under the floor make sure to keep the center of gravity of the car as low as possible. This helps the car keep sticking to the ground. The accelerator, handling and braking all coordinate with each other in real time to provide a comfortable riding experience. Bolt responds smoothly to every steering input given by the driver. With a lot of sensors, this car can manage to roll straight on a freeway without needing a lot of attention from the driver.

The Bolt feels nimble, coordinated and sure-footed when the road gets curvy. It does not roll out of control because of those batteries providing a great center of gravity. We do not think that the Bolt EV could drive any better. The electric motor is utterly smooth with that single-speed direct drive transmission that never shifts. Neither this car makes any noise. While driving this car, all you can hear is the wind bashing against your car of the tires squeaking, if you ever in the mood of going naughty around the curves.

Dimension and Weight

Chevrolet Bolt EV is a small hatchback. Just look at the stats below. The Bolt EV is just 164 inch long and 69.5 inch wide. It stands short at 62.8 inch with ride height of 6.0 inch. Well, Both the Bolt EV and BMW i3 are small electric cars. One comes with a lower price tag, targeting on economic market. While the BMW i3 comes into the class of small but luxury electric cars. Wheelbase is shorter at 102 inches and you can feel that lack of space inside the cabin, on both front and rear seats.

2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV electric Interior

7.0/10

"Although it’s spacious and practical, the Bolt EV’s interior quality and appearance don’t befit its $30,000-plus price point. It looks and feels more as if it belongs in an economy car" -Caranddriver.com

Seating and Comfort

Chevrolet Bolt EV has a seating capacity of 5. Although the seats are not as comfortable as you might think. Your knee might hurt when you take a seat in front or in rear, if you are not among those short people. Add the thin material covering the hard plastic seats of the car does make you uncomfortable to sit for long. Headspace is something to brag about in this car. A 6 feet long person won't hit the roof of the car, for sure.

2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV electric Competition

Chevrolet Bolt EV vs. Tesla Model 3 Sedan

With the 200+ mile range of this car, it is definitely aiming to go up against the Tesla territory. The Bolt EV comes with a lower price to get into that affordable price range marketing, stealing the customers of Tesla with that Fast DC charging and super long mile range. Seems like this freshman from Chevrolet does give a run for a scare to the senior Tesla.

Chevrolet Bolt EV vs. BMW i3

BMW i3 does comes with a higher price range than the Chevrolet Bolt EV. With the interior futuristic enough to realise you that you're driving an electric car from the future, against the cheap looking, hard plastic interior of the Bolt EV. One thing what the bolt beats the i3 at is the mile range. It have almost double the range of the i3, without range extender option.

Chevrolet Bolt EV vs. Nissan Leaf

Competing with the last year model of first generation of the Nissan Leaf, Bolt EV stands at a little costlier price. But because the Leaf is still on that old tech before it will adapt the all new design and tech for 2018 model, Bolt EV should be clear choice to buy.

2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV electric Final Verdict

Bolt EV from Chevrolet is a small yet powerful car, giving you all that crazy power when needed. It sure is a daily car and can be used to go long range, occasionally. Make sure your destination have the electric car charging station available, for you to get back home. One thing where this EV lacks behind is the cheap and uncomfortable interior. We hope that the Chevrolet will fix it in their next year model of Bolt EV. Till then, i am sure that extra power and extra mile range will sure get you to buy it. It would surely convince me if I'm tight on budget.
