The Chevrolet Camaro has been a popular pony car choice for Americans ever since its comeback over a decade ago mainly because of the wide range of powertrains it has to offer. The LT1 is the fiercest Camaro that does not get the SS or the ZL1 suffix to its name. It comes in with a V8 engine under its hood as standard which very well complements its agile handling both on the straights and into the corners. The ride is comfortable and there are plenty of amenities on offer to make it a valuable offering in the compact coupe segment.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Overall Rating

There are no changes made to the Chevrolet Camaro for the 2022 model year apart from the optional 1LE track package that can now be had only with the V8 engine. It continues with its compact yet feature-loaded cabin that offers great value even in the used vehicle market. Similar to last year it is priced at an MSRP of $35,195 for the 2022 model year. Apart from its age-old rivals, the Ford Mustang and the Dodge Challenger, it also faces competition from the European compact coupes like the BMW 2-series and the Audi S3

2022 Chevrolet Camaro LT1 Coupe Features

The LT1 is the top-of-the-line trim in the standard Camaro lineup and hence features a lot of creature comforts like a rear-view camera, sports front seats, LED headlights, and satellite radio. It does not feature many driver aids but one has the option to tailor-make the Camaro as per their personal tastes and needs with plenty of options and packages available to add, which makes almost every Camaro unique to itself.

Additionally one can opt for either the RS package or the Redline Edition package to add more appeal to their Camaro. While the RS offers tinted taillights, unique grille design, decklid spoiler, and 20-inch five-split spoke premium Gray-painted aluminum wheels, the Redline Edition features unique graphics, jet black interiors, red seat belts, and knee pads, premium carpeted floor mats, and black-painted aluminum wheels with red accents. 2022 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe LT1 Release Date

The production of the 2022 Chevy Camaro was originally set to begin in June which was pushed back by three months to September 20th majorly due to the chip shortage. Therefore, expect the car to hit the showrooms only in the last quarter of 2021.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro LT1 Coupe Engine and Performance

Under the hood of the 2022 Camaro LT1 is a 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine that is shared with the Camaro SS and produces an identical 455 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with either a six-speed manual or a ten-speed automatic transmission which powers only the rear wheels in the classic muscle car fashion with no all-wheel-drive drivetrain on offer even as an option.

Performance from this powertrain is no doubt one of the most exciting in any Camaro as it can reach 60 mph from a standstill in just over 4 seconds while the quarter drag run can be done in a blistering quick 12.3 seconds time on the board. There is plenty of low-end torque and the power delivery is very linear as well, which aids in achieving high-performance figures. The engine roars under the hood creating an appealing exhaust note both when screaming at high speeds on a track and also on the start-up.

The added weight of the V8 does not affect the handling at all as the responsive and precise steering wheel and the firm adaptive suspension provide confident handling in all scenarios. The large wheels do affect the ride quality a bit but the magnetically controlled dampers offer a perfect middle ground between sporty and comfort depending on the driving style. It is firm when driving aggressively on the twisties and yet is soft enough for the bad surfaces.

The Camaro LT1 is the most affordable muscle car of the segment as both the Ford Mustang GT and the Dodge Challenger cost a couple of grand more. The BMW on other hand is considerably pricier and is half a second slower in the 0-60 mph sprint. The Mustang manages to be quicker than the Camaro by a hair’s length while the large dimensions and the underpowered powertrain of the Challenger keep at the back of the pack.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro LT1 Coupe Fuel Economy

The American muscle or pony cars weren’t built to sip fuel and instead were gas guzzlers for the most part of their lives. That being said, the 2022 Camaro LT1 doesn’t do as bad in this regard as it returns around 24 mpg on the highways with the combined fuel economy being rated by the EPA at 19 mpg. The large 19-gallon fuel tank further aids in offering a very respectable driving range of around 350 miles on a single tank of gas. Though it might not seem much for a daily commuter car, it has the best driving range in its segment.

Both the Dodge and Ford muscle cars consume a bit more fuel than the Chevy while the BMW 2-series M240i does extremely well in this regard. With a smaller capacity, fewer cylinders, and forced induction in place, the Bimmer is the most frugal of the lot. Though the smaller gas tank capacity affects its range. The Mustang too employs a smaller gas tank which reduces its overall driving range considerably which isn’t helped by its smaller fuel tank capacity.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro LT1 Coupe Interior

Chevrolet continues to ensure the retro vibe with the Camaro and hence although there are modern elements to its cabin, the overall interior design is still very rudimentary. There aren’t many soft-touch elements or touch surfaces with major controls being done with the knobs and switches, but that seems to be the stand-out point for the Camaro’s fan base. Although the cheap hard plastics do seem to stick out as the sore point.

There is plenty of room for the front seat occupants to find a comfortable seating position, but the space at the rear is comically tight. That being said, most muscle car buyers have performance as a priority and rear-seat space is nowhere near their priority list. The trunk capacity is also hard of any use for hauling as it can hardly carry the monthly groceries in its 9 cu-ft of space, though the rear seat could be the perfect place to carry additional cargo.

Though outmatched by its rivals in terms of practicality and spaciousness, the Camaro offers a lot of optional sporty elements to choose from, to better spec your Camaro for maximum performance and also add sporty visual appeal to it. It includes $1,595 Recaro Performance front bucket seats, carbon fiber inlays, and a variety of interior trim kit colors that include red, white, and black. There are also embroidered interior trims and suede interior trims on offer for the added price.

The Ford Mustang GT offers even more legroom at the front and a marginally better rear quarter than the Camaro, but the headroom at the front is tighter from the segment standards. There is no doubt that the Dodge Challenger R/T is the king of this section with a spacious cabin and large boot that is on par with the many midsize sedans. The BMW on the other hand offers a perfect middle-ground for the cabin and trunk space. Some of the interior features in the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe LT1 are:

  • 8-way power front sport bucket seats
  • Folding rear seat
  • Cloth Upholstery
  • Tilt/Telescopic leather-wrapped, flat-bottom steering wheel
  • Leather-wrapped shift knob
  • LCD Driver Information Center
  • Single-zone automatic climate control

How intuitive is the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe LT1’s infotainment unit?

In spite of being the highest trim in the Camaro lineup, the LT1 features the standard seven-inch screen but opting for the $900 technology package bumps the screen size to eight-inch. It also adds a nine-speaker audio system to the mix and an eight-inch digital instrument cluster. That being said, satellite radio and smartphone integration with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are all standards along with the OnStar and Chevrolet connected services. Some of the infotainment features in the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe LT1 include:

  • 7.0-inch Chevrolet Infotainment 3 touchscreen system
  • 6-speaker audio system
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Chevrolet 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot
  • SiriusXM Radio w/12-month All Access trial subscription
  • OnStar services and Chevrolet Connected Access

2022 Chevrolet Camaro LT1 Coupe Exterior

Chevrolet hasn’t made many changes to the exterior of the Camaro ever since it was redesigned back in 2016 as they would prefer treading lightly in this regard as too much playing around with the iconic and old-school design may not be received well by purists. The slim LED headlights, huge front grille, and chiseled hood at the front offer an aggressive front fascia while the oval-shaped quad tail lights complement the two dual chrome exhaust tips. The LT1 features black bowties and larger 20-inch wheels as standard.

Apart from the exterior customizations that are applied with the optional packages, one can also design their Camaro personally with the option to choose between the variety of options which include a wide range of body stripes and paint schemes, multiple wing spoilers, a carbon metallic front splitter, multiple logos and badges and a multitude of wheels styles and shades. One can even opt for a powered sunroof for $995 to soak in some sun while on a leisure drive.

Though both the Chevrolet Camaro and Mustang are very similar to each other in terms of exterior dimensions, the Mustang feels a bit more spacious on the inside. It also offers the highest ground clearance in this segment while the Camaro has a very low hunkered down stance. Both the Challenger and 2-series offer similar ride heights but are stark opposite in their dimensions, with the BMW being the most compact and the Dodge being the largest of them all. Some of the exterior features in the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe LT1 are:

  • Projector-beam headlights w/LED daytime running lights
  • LED taillights
  • Heated power-adjustable auto-dimming outside mirrors
  • Front variable-speed intermittent wipers
  • Black front and rear Bowties
  • 20-inch Silver-painted aluminum wheels

2022 Chevrolet Camaro LT1 Coupe Safety

Chevrolet is not known to be complacent in the safety department which is clearly shown in the safety tests of the Camaro. The NHTSA has rated it with a perfect 5-star overall rating while the Camaro also performed well in the tests conducted by the IIHS for the 2021 model year. Although there aren’t many driver aids being offered with the Camaro, the long list of safety features does offer enough safety to keep all the anxiety away.

Also, many of the features are also available as options and although it would further hike the prices, it does satisfy the needs of an anxious buyer. The optional features include forward-collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors. All of these features bring the 2022 Camaro LT1 on par with the most modern and sophisticated coupes available in the market today. Some of the safety features in the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe LT1 include:

  • StabiliTrak stability control system and brake assist traction control
  • Dual-stage frontal, thorax side-impact, and knee airbags
  • Head curtain side-impact airbags
  • Passenger Sensing System
  • Teen Driver Mode
  • HD Rear Vision Camera
  • OnStar and Chevrolet connected services
  • Tire Pressure Monitor System w/Tire Fill Alert

2022 Chevrolet Camaro LT1 Coupe Competition

2022 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe LT1 vs BMW 2-series M240i coupe

When the best handling coupe from America and the best from Europe meets, the competition is fierce. Keeping the price difference aside due to the premium and luxurious nature of the BMW, the Camaro does well to compete against the M240i. Although apart from the sheer acceleration performance, the BMW feels the better car. But since performance is all that matters for most American muscle car buyers, the lower price tag of the Camaro adds more value to the car.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe LT1 vs Dodge Challenger R/T Coupe

The Dodge Challenger may be a bit on the pricier side, but it offers a lot more space inside its cabin and at the back for its trunk. Other than that, the Camaro wins in every other aspect of the comparison. It is far quicker off the mark, is marginally more frugal and also has far superior handling without much compromise in the ride quality. Therefore, if performance is what you seek, which is probably why you would consider the Camaro LT1, the Challenger might just not cut it for you.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe LT1 vs Ford Mustang GT Fastback

Probably the most celebrated rivalry in the history of American automobiles, the Ford Mustang is the biggest rival for the Camaro. The Camaro LT1 is cheaper than the Mustang GT and yet is equally quick and marginally more fuel efficient. The Mustang is only marginally more spacious but the Camaro is more enjoyable to drive around corners. That being said, the more modern interior with the latest technology might just do the trick for many buyers, but purists would still prefer the old-school Camaro LT1 for its sheer performance.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro LT1 Coupe Final Verdict

The 2022 Chevrolet Camaro LT1 with its powerful V8 under its hood is by far the best value for money muscle car offering from Chevrolet. It is very quick off the line, is pretty efficient, handles well, has a rather comfortable ride quality, and offers decent levels of equipment despite the retro styling. Add to that the exhaustive list of customization options available right from the factory floor and the innumerable available in the third-party market, there’s hardly anything else that one could ask from a high-performance coupe.
