The Chevrolet Camaro has been a household name when it comes to indigenous muscle cars but its convertible avatar has always stood as an extension that no one asked for. Chevrolet seems to be squeezing out the last of what they can from its sixth generation platform introduced back in 2016, pushing out the new 2022 MY, with few or negligible updates. The 2022 Camaro SS Convertible will remain mostly unchanged for the new model year, receiving only minor revisions to equipment across trims and the addition of new exterior colors.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Overall Rating

The 2022 Camaro SS Convertible will be made available in two trims, namely the 1SS and the 2 SS. With its 455hp V8 and an option to either go for a 6-speed manual or a 10-speed automatic transmission, the latest iteration from Chevrolet is available at a starting price of $44,695. It will take on rivals such as the Ford Mustang GT Convertible, Mercedes-AMG C 43 Cabriolet, and the Audi S5 Convertible once it hits the roads.

Final Verdict

2022 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible Features

The 2022 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible will be offered in two trims, both sharing a similar 455hp 6.2L V8 engine. The base trim, the 1SS would start at a price of $44,695 while the slightly better-equipped 2SS will command over $49,695. Both cars come with a 6-speed manual from the factory and are available only in rear-wheel-drive format. A 10-speed automatic transmission is also on offer and would cost around $1,600 more than its manual counterpart.

As for features, the 1SS comes with a well-equipped cabin with a not-so-shabby list of standard amenities. It offers standard standout features such as power-operated seats, Chevrolet infotainment system 3 Plus with an 8.0-inch HD display, leather seating surfaces, power-folding roof, and a set of 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. If you avail of the 2SS trim, you get better equipped with the inclusion of additional standard features including a dual-zone climate control system, ambient lighting, heads-up display, wireless charger, heated front seats, and more.

Which Trim should you buy?

We would recommend the 1SS trim as it holds the best value in the trim lineup. For $44,695, you get a powerful V8 engine, the thrill of a manual transmission, and most of the creature comfort features you would ever need. If it is meant to be driven as a daily driver, the 10-speed automatic would make more sense and the $1,600 raise it commands is completely justifiable.

Release Date

The 2022 Model year Camaro is up for configuration on Chevrolet’s official website. The production is set to start by the end of September 2021 with deliveries expected to commence by mid-November the same year.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible Engine and Performance

The 2022 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible is one of the fastest drop-top cars in the segment. It comes equipped with a 6.2L V8 engine. The monstrous motor outputs 455hp of peak power with a similar 455lb-ft of torque. To everyone's joy, as standard, it is mated to a 6-Speed manual transmission with active rev-matching. However, you can equip it with an optional 10-speed automatic transmission and it does help in shaving off milliseconds from its straight-line speed.

With its robust performance, the V8 accelerates from a standstill to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds. If you give it the stretch, the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible will cross the quarter-mile in 12.4 seconds before hitting a claimed top speed of around 174 mph. It gets a performance suspension from the factory that awards top-notch dynamics and handling, capable of delivering ample fun even on the track. The 6-speed manual can be a bit of a handful for most of us but Chevrolets advanced StabiliTrak electronic stability control does its job to keep everything in one piece. The limited-slip differential does help put down power rather well but if you get hard on the throttle, the rear end is sure to step out of line

With its 455hp V8, the 2022 Chevy Camaro SS Convertible is quite a powerful machine itself. It is almost identical to the Mustang GT Convertible when it comes to straight-line performance and the short deviation in the figure can be attributed to driver responses and other test conditions. The Mercedes and the Audi however, do fall back, clocking just over 4.5 seconds in the 60mph. This can be attributed to their slightly underpowered turbo-6 mills despite coming in with a standard All-wheel-drive setup. Also, both German cars are at least 22 grand more expensive than the Americans in this comparison.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible Fuel Economy

Chevrolet’s 6.2L V8 engine offers VVT to ensure a feasible mileage even with great power output. Being a V8-powered car, the 2022 Chevy Camaro SS Convertible is made for performance driving only. With its 16 MPG in the city, it will run you out of fuel quickly. Still, if you choose to ride it on the highway, you are good for 456 miles. A combined 19 MPG isn't the best, yet for a 455 hp muscle car, it is good enough.

Range (City/Highway/Combined, in Miles)

In its segment, the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible manages to deliver a decent economy. However German rivals, like the Mercedes-AMG C 43 and the S5 convertibles offer better efficiency averaging mileages of 24 and 22 MPG, respectively. Ford Mustang GT Convertible has the lowest economy comparatively delivering just 15 mpg on the streets. However, the Camaro SS Convertible fetches the best in class highway range thanks to its 19-gallon tank only being slightly overshadowed by the most efficient AMG C 43 convertible.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible Interior

The 2022 Camaro SS Convertible has a rather clean-looking cabin than an outright sporty one like its rivals. The quality, though not the best, is up to the standards of Chevrolet. With the SS trim, you even get leather upholstery and aluminum accents on the inside. You'll also like the turbine-inspired AC vents. The adrenaline red interior package does make the insides of the Camaro SS convertible look the most desirable, especially when the roof’s down. With an uncluttered dashboard layout, a huge gauge cluster, and a nicely set screen, the vehicle does feel ergonomic in usage. The flat bottom leather steering does feel good to hold but its design is far from appealing.

For comfortable seating, you should either take the driver's seat or drive shotgun, as the rear bench is pretty tight. With no usable leg-room, the rear seats are best suited for kids or you can use them for your luggage. Moreover, the front driver seat provides 8-way power adjustability while the passenger seat gets 6-ways. The standard cabin features include a single-zone air-conditioning, leatherette upholstery, and cruise control. The 2SS trim adds a heads-up display, a heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, a dual-zone automatic air-conditioning with driver's settings, an 8-inch driver's display, driver seat, and mirror memory function, and spectrum interior lighting.

Seating Capacity

Rear Row (Head/Shoulder/Leg) (in)

Cargo Capacity (cu ft)

Chevrolet has packed the Camaro SS very well with features. With one of the best headroom and legroom in its class, the front seats are quite comfy. The rear seats are a turn down for the adults and might be the smallest in competition. Even the 7.3 cubic feet trunk seems small for such a car. We have the most comfortable seats on the Mercedes-AMG C 43 offering the best compromise in the room on both rows. If we talk about storage, the Mustang GT is the practical one with its class-biggest 11.4 cu-.ft trunk. Standout Interior features of the 2022 Camaro SS Convertible are;

  • Leather-appointed seats
  • Heated leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Dual-zone automatic air-conditioning
  • 7.0-inch driver's display
  • 8.0-inch Chevrolet infotainment system
  • Heated power-operated sport seats
  • 24 Interior color options
  • Heated and ventilated seats (2SS)
  • Wireless charging (2SS)

What's there to keep you entertained?

The 2022 Camaro SS Convertible will offer the updated version of the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Plus system. It has an 8.0-inch HD touchscreen display that can be operated via touch, controls, and voice commands. It offers Bluetooth audio streaming, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto device integration. With AM/FM radio offered as standard, you can even avail OnStar and SiriusXM radio subscriptions. There's SiriusXM 360L 12 month subscription as well. You can even personalize the infotainment with in-vehicle apps and settings. There are 6 standard speakers with the 1SS trim while the 2SS gets an upgraded Premium 7-speaker Bose stereo system.

Standout Infotainment features of the 2022 Camaro SS Convertible are;

  • Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Plus system
  • 8.0-inch HD touchscreen
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Bluetooth handsfree
  • OnStar and SiriusXM subscription
  • SiriusXM 360L 12-month all access
  • Bose premium speakers
  • Steering mounted controls

2022 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible Exterior

The 2022 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible is all about the design. It is one design that showed us that a three-box muscle car can sport a drop-top roof without disrupting its original charisma. The SS looks sharp from the front and the slim grille housing the sleek headlight on either side makes it instantly recognizable. The muscular hood with the integrated vent screams business and the sleeker side profiles make the car look more compact than what it actually is.

At the back, you'll recognize the signature tail lamps which are now full-LED lights, and get the black tint treatment. There's a sporty wing spoiler at the rear specially designed for the SS stating that it's not the regular one. The roaring V8 becomes a melody with the quad tail chrome exhausts. To add charm to the stance, the 2022 Camaro SS rides on 20-inch black-painted alloys wheels and the optional red calipers boost the sporty appeal.

Curb Weight (lbs)

Length (inches)

Width (inches)

Height (inches)

Ground Clearance (inches)

Wheelbase (inches)

In terms of weight, the 2022 Chevy Camaro SS Convertible is one of the lightest cars here, falling second to only the Ford. Even though the Ford has the biggest exterior dimensions, it is the lightest car here. The Mercedes has the biggest wheelbase and this reflects in its cabin space as well. It is also the heaviest of the bunch, being the only one weighing over 4,000 pounds. The Audi S5 convertible keeps the weight under control despite being all-wheels-driven like the Mercedes. Standout exterior features on the 2022 Camaro SS Convertible are:

  • Blacked out front grille
  • LED headlamps with DRLs
  • Chevrolet bow-tie emblems
  • Power Mirrors
  • Rear wind spoiler
  • 20-inch black paint alloy wheels
  • Quad tail chrome exhausts
  • Auto-dimming and heated exterior mirrors (2SS)
  • Capless fuel filler

2022 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible Safety

When the Camaro was updated in 2016, it was redesigned with the GM Alpha platform. With a high-strength steel frame and aluminum body panels, the 2022 Camaro SS gets a rigid lightweight structure that ensures both agility and handling. Moreover, its coupe counterpart did score a 5-star rating from the NHTSA and an overall “good” rating from the IIHS except for roof strength where it fared just average. The standard safety in the 2022 Camaro 1SS is limited to Teen driver settings, StabiliTrak stability control, brake assistance, 3-point seatbelts, dual-threshold airbags, and a rearview camera. Advanced driver assistance systems are reserved for the 2SS and that is a bummer for this price.

Standout Safety features on the 2022 Camaro SS Convertible are:

  • Lightweight high-strength steel structure
  • Teen driver settings
  • Blind zone alert
  • Forward collision warning
  • Lane change alert
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Park assist
  • Backup camera

2022 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible Competition

2022 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible vs 2021 Ford Mustang GT Premium Convertible

The Ford Mustang Convertible was the reason General Motors introduced the Camaro. Both muscle cars have been around for more than 5 decades. Ford Mustang GT gives tough competition to the Camaro SS and still somehow falls back. With better features, quality, and design, Chevrolet has heavily upgraded the Camaro. When it comes to performance and handling, the Mustang GT Convertible comes close but still falls behind the Camaro SS. Also, the Chevy offers a better value for money option here.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible vs 2021 Mercedes AMG 463 Cabriolet

The Mercedes-AMG C 43 Cabriolet isn't a direct rival to the Camaro SS. However both cars fall in the same category in terms of size and performance. Mercedes showcases German luxury and precision, thus costing more than the Camaro. The Chevrolet Camaro SS is a cheaper alternative but offers better performance. That said, the AMG C 43 convertible offers a complete package when it comes to luxury, comfort, technology, and performance. If you can afford it, the Mercedes is most definitely the one to go for.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible vs 2022 Audi S5 Convertible

Even though the Audi S5 Convertible is the expensive car of the two, it falls behind when it comes to performance. It does get an advantage when it comes to luxury and craftsmanship, but spending over 17 grand for a car that's half as fun to drive as the Camaro SS Convertible is not justifiable. Aslo, with more ponies and a 6-speed manual shifter at its disposal, the 2022 Camaro SS Convertible is sure to plaster a smile on your face, something which the S5 convertible just can’t do.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible Final Verdict

With the sixth generation, Chevrolet has made much-required changes to the Camaro with a new platform and a more appealing exterior design. It even offers better technology and safety features, however not as standard. The 2022 Camaro SS Convertible is the best option under $50,000 if you want a pure American muscle drop-top experience. With remarkable performance numbers from that big block V8, a satisfactory fuel economy figure, and decent comfort levels, the Camaro SS Convertible staples its spot in the segment making it desirable even to this day.
