We Recommend

The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is one of the most affordable cars in the segment and comes with a long list of features. The brand has worked significantly to improve the driving dynamics of the model and now, the 2014 ZL1 is definitely a great choice for the buyers and gives tough competition to the rivals.

Engine and Performance
9.5/10

The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 gets a supercharged 6.2-L V-8 engine. The maximum power output from this engine stands at 580 hp while the claimed peak torque stands at 556 lb-ft. As standard, a 6-speed manual gearbox is available with the vehicle but the buyers can also upgrade to an optional 6-speed automatic gearbox. A rear-wheel drive train is offered as standard with the vehicle. It is worth noting that there is no all-wheel-drive system on offer.

Being a supercharged V-8 engine, the maximum power output comes in only after the revs cross the three thousand RPM mark. The gearbox is smooth and easy to operate while the clutch is also not very long, hence making it easy to operate in stop-go traffic. The refinement from the engine is great and so are the NVH levels. The engine does get vocal when pushed hard, but we are sure that you will be loving its sporty thrum as the tachometer climbs up.

The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is one of the most powerful cars in the segment and does a 0-60 mph run in just 3.7 secs, which is significantly better when compared to the rivals. Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is the most powerful on paper churning out 662hp and is closely followed by the Cadillac CTS-V Coupe, both of which take almost 4 seconds to the 60mph mark. Though slower off the line, the Dodge Challenger SRT8, despite its lowest power output, manages to clock comparable timings of 12.4 seconds in the quarter-mile run and even records a top speed of 182 MPH, which is the highest in the segment.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 gets a claimed city mileage of 14 MPG while for highway usage, it boasts a fuel economy of 19 MPG. The combined mileage on the other hand stands at 16 mpg, similar to what Cadillac averages. While fuel economy is not the top priority for the buyers of this segment, the 2014 Camaro ZL1 delivers decent fuel economy figures that are at par with the segment rivals and averages 266 and 361 city and highway miles.

While the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 may not be highly fuel-efficient, owing to the V8 engine, the mileage figures however are at par with that of the rivals. The Shelby GT500 despite being the most powerful of the lot puts out a respectable 18MPG combined but its small fuel tank affects the overall driving range. Thanks to its lower power outputs and a larger fuel tank that can hold 19.5-gallons, the 2014 Dodge Challenger SRT8 records 23 MPG on the highway resulting in 448 miles.

Interior
8.4/10

The brand has introduced a few changes in the cabin of the Camaro ZL1 with the 2014 update. To start with, the car now gets Recaro performance seats. The driver seat is 6-way power-adjustable while a heating function is available for both the seats at the front. In addition to this, a color heads-up display also makes its way to the package and displays information like vehicle speed, high beam status, navigation alerts, etc. There is however no automatic climate control. The seats offer great support but are low-slung, hence making it difficult to move in and out of the vehicle.

Moving on, the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 gets a long list of features inside the cabin. The frame-less IRVM gets auto-dimming features while the antenna of the infotainment system has been mounted in the rear glass. Apart from this, the car gets a tilt and telescopic steering wheel which also features buttons to control the audio system and the instrument console.

There is enough space inside the cabin of the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 to make it decently comfortable for most people. The space on offer is also marginally better than the rivals, but the Dodge Challenger is a tad bit practical with its 5-seat configuration and highest cargo space of 16.2 cu.-ft. The 2014 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 follows closely with a trunk volume of 13.4 cu.-ft, while both the Camaro and CTS-V coupe feel underwhelming in the aspect.

Standout interior features:

  • 6-way power-adjustable driver seat
  • Heated front seats
  • Leather-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel
  • Tilt and telescopic adjustable steering wheel
  • Remote keyless entry
  • Manual air conditioning with pollen filter

How intuitive is the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1’s infotainment system?

The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 comes with a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The system gets a Boston Acoustics premium 9-speaker audio system with a rated output of 245 watts. The audio output is impressive and decent for a car of this class. In addition to this, the system also gets the Chevrolet MyLink system. The user interface is not very difficult to understand and the touch response is decent.

Standout infotainment features:

  • 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • Boston Acoustics premium 9-speaker system with 245 watts output
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio
  • USB Port
  • Chevrolet MyLink
  • Bluetooth connectivity
Exterior
8.0/10

There have been no changes made to the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 when it comes to the exterior design. The car continues to feature the old-school, subtle yet aggressive design language. We get bright headlamps at the front while the tail lights don't feel a little too simple for the design language. The 20-inch alloy wheels attract a lot of eyeballs and gel in well with the overall character of the vehicle. Apart from this, the car gets splitters at the front while a diffuser is also present at the rear.

Chevrolet has left no stones unturned to improve the aerodynamics of the vehicle and maximize cooling efficiency. Apart from this, the extended rock sliders also grab attention. The rear spoiler looks great and makes the rear slightly more dramatic. Moreover, you also get adaptive magnetic suspension dampers, functional carbon-fiber air extractor for the hood and unique front and rear fascias. It gets a longer wheelbase of 112.3 inches, and is one the widest vehicles with a total width of 75.5 inches.

The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 gives a strong competition to the rivals when it comes to exhibiting road presence and the dimensions of the vehicle too are at par with the segment rivals. Dodge Challenger sits a little longer than its rivals at 197.7 inches and its large wheelbase helps accommodate more on the interior. The 2014 Cadillac CTS V Coupe is the heaviest weighing vehicle and has a curb weight of 4,217 lbs, while the 2014 Mustang Shelby GT500 lies midway in the segment.

Standout exterior features:

  • 20 inch Black 10-spoke forged aluminum wheels
  • Body-color roof ditch and body cladding
  • Side rocker extensions
  • Projector fog lamps
  • Heated and power-adjustable ORVMs
  • Sill Plate
Safety
7.0/10

In 2012, the Camaro became the first vehicle to score a five on five in the rollover ratings while it also scored five-star ratings in most of the tests conducted by various organizations. The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is based on the same architecture and hence gets the same safety ratings. In addition to this, it is said to have high-strength body steel to keep the occupants safe during a crash. On the safety features front, it gets all the passive and active modern electronic safety features and equipment which include:

  • StabiliTrak Stability Control System
  • Rear Park Assist
  • Rear Vision Camera
  • Trunk emergency release handle
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Seat belt pretensioners
Final Verdict

The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 comes out to be a great choice for the buyers who need a good-looking, feature-rich, and fun-to-drive 2-door coupe muscle car in the American market. The 2014 update has made it even better and the car now comes equipped with some more features. The performance offered by the vehicle is one of the best in the segment and the after-sales support too is great.
