The Chevrolet Camaro has been one of the most loved products of the brand for several years now. It is now part of its second generation and has evolved a lot over the years. This generation has been on sale from 2016 carries forward with minor changes for the 2022 model year. The 2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is the highest performing variant of the car and is one of the best-performing cars in the Chevrolet line-up. Even next to the mid-engine Corvette that is now being sold as the flagship performance car this is one car that is hard to ignore.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Even though it is not one that sells a lot of units, it has made a name for itself by providing incredible value for money in terms of the performance that a muscle car like this provides. It is also one of the best-looking cars on American roads right now and demands a second glance from almost everyone. Starting at an MSRP of $65,895, it proves to be one of the best sports cars money can buy. It competes against the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody and the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Features

The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is available in two body types - coupe and convertible. The convertible starts at $71,695 and is reviewed in a separate article. The ZL1 being a high-performance variant is not further split into many different trim levels. It comes as a fully loaded package that includes adaptive suspension, electronic limited-slip differential, high-performance brakes, heads-up display, 8-inch touchscreen, Bose sound system, and so on.

This, combined with the amazing performance that it provides makes it an irresistible deal no matter what way you look at it. This is the point that makes it perform well in the segment with very close competition from rivals from Ford as well as Dodge. The Camaro has fared well so far and looks like it is not going to let go of that advantage anytime soon.

We Recommend

As we mentioned, since the ZL1 is a singular trim level, there is no further nitpicking. However, Chevrolet offers a lot of optional extras to the already loaded vehicle. These include a sunroof, navigation system, performance, and data recorder as well as the favorite package for most automobile enthusiasts – the 1LE track package. This gives the car upgraded suspension components, a satin black hood wrap, carbon fiber rear spoiler, and aerodynamic tweaks. However, adding the track package does take out one feature from the car and that is forward collision warning. If one's focus is on performance, this is definitely a trade-off worth having as the brakes of the car are excellent.

Release Date

The 2022 version of the car has had its production delayed by almost 3 months now. It was supposed to start on June 14, 2021, but the date has been pushed further to September 20, 2021. This puts a lot of fans in a position of unrest as they have been eagerly waiting for the car. If production starts only in September, deliveries will be delayed even further as it will take furthermore for the car to reach dealerships. So, unfortunately, people who were looking to buy the 2022 Camaro will have to wait a while.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Engine and Performance

One of the most important factors for this car would be its engine and performance and this is an area that Chevrolet delivers more than anyone expects. Being a high-performance variant, the ZL1 comes with the 6.2 L supercharged V-8 that is an absolute blast to drive. Not only does the engine produce a lot of power, but the car is especially adept at putting that power down, resulting in blisteringly quick acceleration figures. The car can do 0 to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds and goes on to complete the quarter-mile at 11.7 seconds.

Muscle cars were once only about straight-line performance and turned out to be quite disappointing when you started cornering them hard. However, things have changed for the better in the latest generation of cars that includes this one, and now the car is as capable on a winding road or on a racetrack as it is on a drag strip. It has excellent steering and an equally satisfying chassis. It is extremely fun to drive and promises the driver to smile from ear to ear every time they drive it.

The transmission is a six-speed manual and a 10-speed automatic is available as an option. Rear-wheel drive is the only drivetrain. Although purists would love to have the manual, it is excellent and Chevrolet has provided the option of the 10 speed automatic because, with 650 hp, the car can become a handful. In this regard, however, the extremely potent chassis does help the driver manage it a bit. The brakes are also one of the most excellent systems around and come from Brembo. We promise excellent 60-0 stopping distances of 104 feet.

In terms of performance, all cars are neck to neck. The Camaro seems to have the lowest figures on paper but remains just as competitive on the road. The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is an extremely fast car and the most potent one with its 760 hp engine. However, one thing to be noted is that the car is much more expensive than the Chevrolet. The Dodge has more performance on paper but is slightly slower in the real world. In fact, the biggest advantage the Dodge ever had is that it was a beast on the drag strip but now it seems to have lost that. However, it is refreshing to see that these cars deliver excellent performance without added issues in terms of weight or fuel economy.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Fuel Economy

One does not expect a lot of fuel economy from muscle cars, and especially from the highest performing variants of those. However, we’re in for a surprise as the Camaro returns decent fuel economy compared with the blistering performance that it delivers. The manual transmission is good for 14 MPG in the city, 20 MPG on the highway, and 16 MPG combined. On the other hand, the automatic transmission drops down this figure to 13 MPG in the city, with other parameters remaining identical. Even though it is not a lot, it is definitely acceptable and on par with the competition.

Although the Camaro is not at all fuel-efficient, it certainly seems so next to its competition. The advantage is that despite having an engine that is extremely capable, Chevrolet has not milked out as much as its competitors have in terms of horsepower. For this reason, and combined with the highest capacity fuel tank in this class, the Camaro has the highest range figures by a long shot. With a fuel tank capacity of 19 gallons, it can achieve a range of 266 miles in the city, 380 miles on the highway, and 304 miles in the combined cycle.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Interior

The Camaro delivers a surprise again when it comes to the interiors as one would expect that this is the Chevrolet has to make some profit. Despite not having the plushest materials inside, the cabin is definitely better laid out than we would expect. There are not many changes in the 2022 model as compared to the 2021 model. There is enough space for the front seat occupants to be comfortable. The seats are also very supportive and hug you tight in corners where you expect the support to keep you in place.

The design is slightly dated but remains beautiful. That is not standard equipment offered including power-adjustable front seats heating and ventilation, heated steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, and so on; however, there is very little space to store items and the rear seats are pretty much useless. The ergonomics also can be improved especially since the dashboard is not driver-oriented for a vehicle that is designed around the preferences of the driver.

Cargo Capacity

16.2 cu-ft

13.5 cu-ft

One can see that the Camaro offers very bad cargo space. At 9.1 ft.³, this is definitely disappointing but adding insult to injury, the space is even harder to access due to the loading area being inconveniently designed. The Dodge Challenger has a cargo area that is almost twice the size as well as much more spacious rear seats. However, this is not the most important parameter in this category and hence the Camaro can be excused for the slight deficiencies it has in this regard. Apart from this, the Mustang has been worse in terms of the space provided at the rear seat. Some standout interior features include:

  • Power-adjustable front seats
  • Heated and ventilated seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Center armrest with integrated cupholders
  • Leather upholstery

How intuitive is the car’s infotainment unit?

Coming packed with a lot of technology, the Camaro does not miss out on infotainment features as well. The touchscreen system that is in the car is among the best that is offered in the industry. It has extremely readable icons and menus, while also offering the best features. One also gets the latest connectivity features including a Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless smartphone integration, and so on.

The sound system is an extremely potent one from Bose and that is the head-up display and wireless smartphone charging facility along with several USB ports. It provides a very nice experience inside the car and makes occupants feel entertained. Some standout infotainment features include:

  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Bose audio system
  • Wireless phone charging
  • Head-up display
  • Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system
  • 8” infotainment screen
  • Bluetooth, USB, and Aux connectivity

2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Exterior

The exteriors of the Camaro are extremely good-looking. In fact, Chevrolet has now started incorporating several design cues from the starting to its SUV models including the Chevrolet Blazer. It is definitely an icon in terms of design but at the same time, it manages to stay relevant with time changes and updates that make it capable for the modern era. It is expected to incorporate some extra exterior colors for the 2022 model but no other visual changes are expected. The ZL1 especially due to its sporty accents and focus on aerodynamics which gives it a purely functional design. This satin black hood that comes in the 1LE version is also quite attractive.

The Camaro and Mustang are rather small cars compared to the huge Dodge Challenger. In fact, this extra size is the reason why that car is so much more spacious on the inside. The trade-off is the performance at the end of the day as the Dodge Challenger weighs much more than Mustang and the Camaro. It does not have a chassis balance that is exciting or even remotely capable of delivering much. If you are asked to pick between extra interior space and extra performance in the segment, the answer is quite obvious. Some standout exterior features include:

  • 20-inch wheels
  • Blacked out exterior trim
  • Front splitter
  • Rear diffuser
  • Rear wing
  • Front air dams

2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Safety

Despite being a performance car, as opposed to most, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 has undergone crash testing. This, however, has not been for the 2022 model but for the 2021 model. Carrying over structurally and safety feature-wise unchanged, these results are 11 for this model year as well. This chassis is extremely rigid and generally capable of holding impacts. The NHTSA has awarded the car a four-star safety rating but the IIHS has not done an evaluation. The onboard safety suite is rather excellent with features such as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision warning as well as rear parking sensors coming as standard. Some standout safety features include:

  • Dual-stage airbags
  • Rear Park Assist
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Blind Zone Alert
  • Lane Change Alert
  • Forward Collision Alert
  • Rearview camera

2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Competition

2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 coupe vs 2022 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody

If you are in the market for a performance muscle car, the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody does not do much for you unless you live at the drag strip. Even then, the Camaro ZL1 beats it fair and square at its own game. The Challenger has been around for too long and has definitely started showing signs of age. The Camaro on the other hand is fresh and an extremely well-performing car.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 coupe vs 2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

It is tough picking between the Camaro ZL1 and the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. The reason is that both cars are very capable and have read the books about muscle cars not being able to handle well. However, the Mustang offers a bit more performance but at an added cost. And frankly, the greatest attraction in this category is that there is extreme value for money, and for this reason, we still feel the Camaro has an edge.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Final Verdict

Although the current-generation Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 has been around for six years now, it is still an excellent buy in 2022. The car offers best-in-class handling, fuel economy as well as excellent performance. It does take a backseat in terms of practicality but most buyers in this category have already said ‘to heck with it’ and hence the car does make a lot of sense to its target crowd. The car is also an excellent design and has aged well over time. But honestly, one of the biggest attractions it has is that it is priced extremely well and in a way that it is accessible to a lot of buyers.
