The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 has always stood out for offering class-leading dynamics and is made for breaking lap records. Unlike the traditional muscle car that focuses on straight-line performance, the ZL1 is easily capable of giving some supercars a run for their money around a track. As usual, the interiors are mostly carried over from the standard models and the only notable difference is the 6-speed manual transmission, a massive supercharged 6.2L V-8 engine, and upgraded chassis components.

The Camaro ZL1 competes with other track-focused offerings like the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, and the Audi TT RS. Available in both coupe and convertible versions, the ZL1 starts at $65,845, which is right in line with most of its competitors.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Coupe Interior Design, Dimensions, and Comfort

Save for the leather, faux suede upholstery, and the comprehensive feature list, the interiors of the ZL1 mirror that of the standard models with an emphasis on style over practicality. From the unconventional center climate vents to the massive hooded dials, the interiors of all the new Camaros are well built with good quality plastic used everywhere, although it can't match European rivals. While there are two rear seats on offer, they are best used for storage rather than passengers. Subtle red contrast stitching runs throughout the cabin along with a dash of silver and chrome trims.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Front Seats

The dashboard design is done rather tastefully, mixing a lot of retro and modern elements. The hooded dials take center stage showing a range of information. Like the standard Camaro, the infotainment system gets its own raised section in the middle with physical controls followed by climate controls neatly tucked away under it. The center climate vents are buried behind all the controls with chrome surrounds and a healthy range of adjustments. The center stack holds the chubby manual gear shifter and a few cupholders. Center console storage is also usable with a comfortable armrest at the top.

With Recaro bucket seats as standard, the ZL1 offers exceptional levels of support and bolstering to minimize lateral movement during a track day. While the seats may look uncomfortable, they are very supportive, perfectly balancing comfort and grip. Passenger space is also adequate with oodles of legroom and headroom on offer. However, the limited visibility continues to be the single biggest issue with the Camaro, especially for shorter drivers. Being the range-topping model, the driver gets power-adjustability with memory function, and both front seats get heating functions.

The less said about the rear seats, the better. Not only are they harder to get into, once inside, but the space is barely adequate for children. The absence of headrests makes the situation even worse. It's best to consider the rear seats as extra storage to complement the minuscule trunk capacity.

Despite being bred for the track, the ZL1 gets a center armrest for the front passengers and dual-zone climate control as standard. A powered sunroof is also available as an option.

Like the standard Camaro, the ZL1 is one of the more practical options in the segment, offering better space than the Ford Mustang GT500 and Audi TT RS. However, the Dodge Challenger Hellcat is in a league of its own, capable of squeezing in an extra passenger at the rear.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Coupe Infotainment

Being the range-topping trim, the Camaro ZL1 gets the bigger 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with the latest Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Plus interface. The crisp display and simple menus make it easy to navigate.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Coupe Cargo Capacity

The small trunk opening along with the high load floor leaves just 9.1 cubic feet of space for luggage, which is significantly less than all of its competitors.

Fortunately, the rear seats can be folded to liberate some more space and make it at least usable for a weekend's worth of luggage.

LIke its passenger capacity, the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is also the most practical option in the segment with a conventional trunk and foldable seats, beating both the Mustang Shelby GT500 and Audi TT RS. The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 comes in last just like the standard models because of the small opening and shallow trunk.

Additional Interior Storage Spaces

As expected with a track-focused sports car, the Camaro ZL1 gets little in the way of storage areas and cubby holes around the cabin, the center armrest storage is on the smaller side like the cupholders near it. The glovebox is also hidden away with just enough space to store some documents. Even the door pockets are smaller than usual, leaving only the rear seat space for additional storage.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Coupe Creature Comforts

Sitting at the top of the range, the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Coupe gets almost all the features available including Recaro front bucket seats, faux suede-wrapped steering wheel with heating, customizable ambient lighting, wireless charging, dual-zone automatic climate control, power-adjustable front seats with heating, and more. A sunroof is available as an option.

Verdict

Although most of the interior looks identical to the standard models, the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Coupe does improve on several aspects, the most notable of which is the improved material quality. The inclusion of leather, suede, and the sports color scheme helps the ZL1 stand out. However, it inherits all the negatives including the barely usable rear seats, minuscule trunk capacity, and minimal cabin storage areas. Since the ZL1 is focused on track performance over all else, it still makes a compelling package despite the shortcomings.
