If you are still into the 90s pickup truck styling but want to migrate towards better technology, then the 2011 Chevrolet Colorado fits right into the slot. The Chevrolet Colorado comes with various engine options to choose from, not to mention a variety of cabin and bed configurations. What looks like a very weak offering in the base trim comes out as a pretty strong contender in its upper trims.

The competition in this segment is as usual the GMC Canyon which is usually a blood brother to Colorado. Japanese are trying their best to snatch away some profit from this segment with the Toyota Tacoma and its popularity says nothing different. Last but not least the Ford Ranger is the cheapest offering and having the smallest engine in the segment in the base trim will have a hard time.

2011 Chevrolet Colorado Features

9.0/10

Well, you all know how pickup trucks are configured and cabin sizes and bed sizes but this is for new people, so please bear with us. The 2011 Chevy Colorado comes in 3 body styles: regular cab, extended cab (has small passenger doors), and crew cab (proper 4 doors), the one we are going to talk about today. Crew cabs are equipped with a smaller 5-foot bed but have proper seating space for up to 5 people.

The 2011 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab comes in three trim levels- 1LT, 2LT, and 3LT. The vehicle comes with features like Air-conditioning, stereo system, and 16-inch wheels on the 1LT trim. The 2LT gets bigger wheels and some chrome treatment on the exterior. The top trim gets 18-inch wheels and bucket seats. This trim looks a bit modern compared to the previous two. The optional accessories include a towing package, leather upholstery, and power front seats with heating.

For daily grinds and running errands, the 1LT trim seems sufficient enough but why go basic when you can get a properly equipped truck for a few thousand more? Having more power is always beneficial. Thus, the 3LT trim which has a V-8 engine, better stylish wheels will be our pick for Colorado. To make your ride more comfortable, you can always have the optional leather upholstery.

2011 Chevrolet Colorado Engine and Performance

6.0/10

The 2011 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab comes in 3 engine options and 2 drivetrain options. The 2.9L, inline-4 engine equipped in the 1LT produces 185 hp & 190 lb-ft of torque. This much power is sufficient only for those who will use this truck for hauling people only. Forget about towing or even carrying super heavy loads in the bed. Well, you can get either an RWD or 4WD variant but the 4-speed automatic transmission is mandatory on all the crew cab variants. The 2LT trim comes with a rather unconventional 3.7L inline-5 engine. This one churns out 242 hp & 242 lb-ft of torque.

The top-trim 3LT has an engine capable of all the herculean tasks. The 5.3L, V-8 engine produces 300 hp & 320 lb-ft of torque. 3LT trim is RWD exclusive and also comes with a 4-speed automatic transmission. As we talked about above the Inline-4 engine does fall short on heavy jobs but for anything else it is smooth. The 4-speed automatic is great but why didn’t they coupled the V-8 engine with the 5-speed manual transmission available on some models of Colorado is still a mystery.

The official numbers aren’t available the moment we write this but as we all know the GMC Canyon is a mechanical brother to Colorado; the performance will replicate itself. The Canyon is the quickest truck with the base engine with Tacoma & Ford Ranger following with a second’s difference. The Tacoma also comes with a 4-speed automatic transmission while the Ford Ranger comes with a 5-speed manual transmission which will excite the old school. Ford Ranger comes equipped with an underpowered 2.3L inline-4 which still provides on-road performance than the GM twins.

2011 Chevrolet Colorado Fuel Economy

9.0/10

The base engine on the 2011 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab is about just getting from point A to B while not being anxious about the mileage. The 18/25/21 city/highway/combined economy is good news for buyers. The fuel tank capacity at 19 gallons isn’t the best but it will still allow a decent 399-mile range combined. The V-8 engine will surely take its toll on your pocket with a 14/19/16 city/highway/combined fuel economy but the jobs it will do for you should be worth covering the fuel expenses at least.

The Chevy Colorado, Toyota Tacoma & GMC Canyon have exactly similar fuel economies; well Tacoma has a tad bit better city mileage along with a big fuel tank capacity. The Ford Ranger has the least powerful engine in the group and that’s great for efficiency purposes. Combine that with a similar fuel tank capacity Ranger gets the best overall driving range.

2011 Chevrolet Colorado Interior

8.0/10

The interior of the 2011 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab is very practical. The dashboard has a flat design and covers the least amount of real estate inside the cabin. All the gauges are clearly visible and even the steering wheel doesn’t have any styling elements on it except for leather wrapping on some trims. The material quality isn’t great but we are not really having any solid expectations from this truck. The hard plastic will cover most of the cabin and you either hate it or live with it. The front seats have cloth upholstery and are comfortable enough thanks to the slight bolstering on offer.

It’s a truck so headroom and legroom aren’t any concern on the first row. The second-row seats are well padded too but fitting 3 here isn’t possible. Chevy cut off some portion of the third person seating; don't know why, keeping it wouldn’t have hurt the fuel economy if that’s what they were concerned about. As standard, you get cloth upholstery but that can be upgraded to leather upholstery through available options. You can also get power-adjustable heated front seats. Overall, the cabin suits the price tag of this truck and you won’t feel bad if it gets dirty.

The cargo-carrying capacity of the 2011 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab at 37 cubes is on par with the competition. The towing capacity of the Colorado with the V-8 engine and proper equipment stands at 6000lbs which should be sufficient for most of your hauling needs. The Toyota Tacoma has slightly better towing at 6500lbs and it achieves this with a V-6 engine. The GM twins have the most spacious front row seating and can seat 6 people. Tacoma and Ranger being double cabs can seat only 5 people. While they are equally spacious in the front row, the rear row feels a bit cramped. Standout interior features in the 2011 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab are:

  • High-quality cloth seats
  • Sliding cargo bed window
  • Leather-wrapped steering
  • Privacy glass

How intuitive is the 2011 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab’s infotainment system?

The 2011 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab comes with a basic music playing system with AM/FM and satellite radio functionality. Bluetooth and CD player are missing on the base trim though. Overall, the system works fine and we suggest getting a better music system for that wireless phone connectivity. Standout infotainment features in the 2011 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab include:

  • CD player
  • AM/FM
  • Satellite radio
  • Bluetooth
  • AUX input
  • OnStar

2011 Chevrolet Colorado Exterior

7.0/10

The overall design language of the 2011 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab screams classic pick-up trucks. It is as boxy as it can be and it isn’t 1999 or something but the Colorado still successfully looks like our good old pickups. The front end of the truck has some weird or let’s say bold styling elements with those split headlight assemblies. The top portion resembles a car while the bottom one suits the truck philosophy well. gapping them in between is a body panel that will be chrome plated in higher trims. This was so obvious.

The rest of the styling is very simple, no bulged-out fenders or body lines are going on. The external mirrors could have been painted in body color at least on the higher trims to make it look like money well spent but no, they are just black. To sum it up, the design is fine for the most part and could have been done better as it has started to show its age.

While Colorado is still living in its old glory days the Tacoma has started to pick up some modern vibes. The Toyota Tacoma also has better ground clearance in the segment aiding the overall off-road capability. The overall width on the Tacoma is better than the competition, giving it better shoulder room and overall space on the inside. Standout exterior features in the 2011 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab include:

  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Privacy glass
  • Sliding rear window
  • Chrome exterior trim
  • Assist steps

2011 Chevrolet Colorado Safety

8.0/10

The crash test procedures have been updated for this year but the 2011 Colorado hasn’t been tested yet by the authorities. But referring to the 2010 model year results of 5-stars for frontal crash tests and 5-stars for the side impact tests we can anticipate the build quality of the 2011 Colorado should be great. In the IIHS tests, Colorado has got an Acceptable rating in front collisions for the crew cab model and a poor rating in side crash ratings. For the safety of the passengers inside, we have side curtain airbags, traction control, and stability control. Standout safety features in the Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab include:

  • OnStar
  • Anti Lock brakes
  • Stability control
  • Traction control
  • Side curtain airbags

2011 Chevrolet Colorado Final Verdict

The Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab is a good pickup truck and there is one for every kind of user. For people haulers, the base trim is more than enough and it provides great fuel economy as well. Someone with a business need in mind can get the V-8 for its power and towing abilities. The interior is okay and with the optional leather upholstery, it gets better. Overall the 2011 Chevy Colorado is a no-nonsense pickup truck meant for work more than leisure.
