The 2018 Chevrolet Colorado is proof that car buyers have accepted mid-size pickup trucks with open arms. This car has great space, excellent infotainment features, and so on but feels completely uninspiring to drive and look at. Furthermore, it has catastrophic problems associated with the engine and transmission. With 97 complaints and only 1 recall this year, its benchmark is quite low. Starting at an MSRP of $26,300, it competes against the Toyota Tacoma, the GMC Canyon, and the Nissan Frontier. Read on about Chevy Colorado problems here.

2018 Chevrolet Colorado User Complaints and Problems

Mechanical problems:

  1. A few complaints about the transmission shifting gears roughly and stuttering have been reported. The operation is not smooth as one would expect from a car. This is one of the most common Chevy Colorado transmission problems.
  2. The variable timing actuator on the camshaft can also produce a shuddering noise and the repair for this is quite expensive.
  3. The engine block heater being faulty can also result in the vehicle catching fire.
  4. Sometimes the engine stalls and the truck has to be restarted. There is no check engine light issued.
  5. The jerkiness of the truck is also beyond limits acceptable according to many owners. The 2018 Chevy Colorado vibration problems are very notorious and could be the most common issue with the truck.
  6. Several owners have also faced power steering issues in the car. This will make the car very hard to drive and the problem could be due to a faulty wiring harness or steering module.
  7. A defective oil cooler line hose is also known to produce oil leaks.
  8. The ‘Multimatic DSSV dampers’ are known to suffer from leaks and blown shocks are a common occurrence.

Electrical system problems:

  1. The cup-holders are placed next to the shifter and can result in significant damage if there is any liquid spilled. This problem is further aggravated by the hard plastic container which has drainage holes that lead directly to the top of electrical switches.
  2. One contact states that the backup camera image is so bright at night that the driver cannot use the truck safety. There is a brightness control switch inside but the inputs do not correlate to the outputs.
  3. There are a few complaints about the ignition key not being able to be removed from the steering column. It only comes until the accessory mode and not until the off mode which is required to take the key off. These are classified under Chevy Colorado ignition switch problems.
  4. There is a multitude of Chevy Colorado infotainment system problems including backup camera flashing at highway speeds, hands-free phone calls put on hold, navigation screen flashing, issuing inaccurate directions, and so on. The radio stations can also change without any input from the driver.
  5. Many owners have also complained about complete electrical shutdowns. The victory starts fine without any sign of issues. The electrical system is also known to produce multiple warning lights that are in no way related to the real issues present.

Exterior problems:

  1. Some owners have said that the hood bounces up and down while driving and is not an easy fix.
  2. There are many complaints about the cargo bed buckling near the fenders despite the truck not being overloaded.

Safety problems:

  1. There are a few complaints about a loose rattling sheet metal and the door pillars that may resultant restriction of airbag deployment. The side curtain airbags are also known to deploy without any reason for doing so.
  2. A fire erupted in the car where a three-month-old baby was sitting and the car started to smoke.
  3. The seatbelts of the car fail to lock and provide safety to occupants.

Should you buy the 2018 Chevrolet Colorado?

The Chevrolet Colorado is not the most exciting car or the most modern car in this category. It has not earned a name for itself in terms of reliability either. What could’ve been solved by a simple 2018 Chevy Colorado transmission recall has become a huge problem for most owners. Next to rivals like the Toyota Tacoma, it does not offer much else to make it special and warrants higher maintenance costs. Many of its issues are widespread and several owners being affected by it mean that we cannot suggest it to you.
