Fuel Economy

Starting at $70,590 for the base 1LT variant, the Grand Sport Convertible sits right in the Middle of the Corvette range which includes the “Hardcore” Track Focused Z06 Convertible and the Entry level Stingray Convertible. It tends to offer the Performance of the Z06 and the usability/practicality of the Stingray. This means 0-60 in under 4 seconds and top speed of over 190MPH.

For the History part, the Grand Sport was introduced by Chevrolet in 1963 to dominate Race Competitions and that DNA still exists in the current generation of the Grand Sport. With the Grand Sport, you get the superb Z51 package as Standard which is an optional extra on the Stingray. This adds features like the Magnetic Ride Control, Performance Exhaust and other performance oriented features on the Grand Sport Convertible.

The Competition to the Grand Sport comes in the form of the Jaguar F-Type Convertible and the Porsche Boxster 718.

The Grand Sport is one of the best Value packages currently on sale in the Corvette line up as it carries forward all the bells and whistles from the Stingray and adds some of the performance parts from the Z06. There are 3 trims to choose from namely the 1LT, 2LT and 3LT with the Z51 performance package standard on all the trims on the Grand Sport.

We Recommend :

We would recommend our readers to go for the 2LT trim, as it offers most of the equipment that the 3LT has to offer. The 3LT just adds a Performance Data Recorder and some minute cosmetic changes.

“Chevrolet will soon sell you a Corvette with 755 horsepower, which is, frankly, insane. Even the 650-hp Z06 is sort of unnecessary for most people, most of the time. That’s why a lot of us auto scribes believe the Grand Sport is the real sweet spot of the Corvette range”–Motor1.com

Engine and Transmission

Powering the 2018 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport Convertible is the same 6.2L Naturally Aspirated V8 Motor delivering 460HP and 465lbs-ft of Torque. The Bump in power is due to the Z51 performance package which comes as standard in the Grand Sport.

The Sound generated from the Quad Exhausts is just fantastic and would make you rev the motor Higher and Higher. The Transmission duties are handled by an 8 Speed Auto Gearbox or a 7 Speed Manual with Active Rev Matching in the Paddle Shifters. The Engine responds to even the smallest of Throttle Inputs and encourages you to pull the engine to the Redline just to hear that “Orchestra” generated by the V8.

The 6.2L V8 Motor generates “Breathtaking” acceleration which pushes you back to the Seat, every time you step on the throttle hard. You may have to sit tight to the Seats to handle the ‘G-forces’ generated from the Power delivered by the Engine. The Power is effortlessly channeled to the rear wheels via the 7 speed manual transmission.

The above figures clearly indicates that pressing the accelerator pedal hard on the ground will be an enthralling experience but should be done only when one is in his full senses, as even the slightest of carelessness may lead to un wanted consequences.

Braking and Handling

In terms of Ride and Handling, the Corvette has improved by Leaps and Bounds. It isn’t a typical American Muscle Car any more as it can tackle corners as efficiently as it can handle Straight lines.

  • The Z51 performance package lends the Grand Sport Magnetic Ride Control with Performance Traction Control that gives the Corvette unrivalled levels of Cornering abilities and ride ability.
  • The Steel Brakes provided by Brembo offers superb Feedback and great byte even in the hardest of braking situations with the 4 wheel ABS taking care of the rest.
  • Performance Data Recorder offers real time stats regarding Various Driving Parameters allowing the driver to change his driving patterns accordingly.

Fuel Economy

A buyer in this segment doesn’t usually bother about MPG figures or Gas Mileage. But, for those who may want to look into these figures won’t be disappointed. Due to the naturally aspirated motor, one doesn’t need to pay the “Gas Guzzler” tax despite the huge engine which allows savings of approximately 2,000$ depending on the area you live.

Also, Chevrolet has added something called “Active Fuel Management” which switches off 4 of the 8 Cylinders when the load is light or when you toggle the Eco Mode. This ensures a Gas Mileage of up to 25 MPG in some conditions. The Light body structure lends low body weights to the car which translates to better overall fuel efficiency.

“Slip into the low-slung Corvette’s driver’s seat – 8-way power adjustable GT bucket seats are standard, but Competition Sport buckets are available – and you’ll be greeted by a cabin that’s high quality and driver-focused”- Carbuzz.com

Seating and Comfort

The 2018 Chevy Corvette Grand Sport coupe has a Driver Focused Interior layout. There is a flowing design on the Center Console with a whole host of buttons present on the Infotainment System. The Build Quality and fit and finish may not be the best in the segment and needs improvements but is certainly not understated in any way. The Materials used are of Premium Quality including the Leather and the Stitching

Some people may however complain about the use of Plastics on a lot of places but that has been done to save costs and is evident. The Seats themselves offer great comfort levels and have adequate bolstering on them to withstand any kind of speeds.

Cargo Space

The Grand Sport offers good Cargo space at the Back which is enough to carry luggage sufficient for a weekend ride or doing daily errands round the city. There are decent number of Bottle Holders, Storage bins and spaces in the cabin as well which will be nifty when keeping things like Phones, Cups or other small things. A clever feature is the Sliding down Touchscreen Infotainment Screen that

“It helps to start with great bones. The current-generation (C7) Corvette has been around since 2013 and it's aging like a...well, if not a fine wine, then definitely a prime steak” –TheDrive.com

Dimensions and Weights

At just 3,428lbs, the Corvette Grand Sport is one of the lightest vehicles in its class owing to the generous use of Aluminium and Carbon Fiber parts in the Chassis and the Body of the Car. Also, this Car is wider than the Stingray. The Car has been designed keeping in mind, Aerodynamic Efficiency which is done by effective channeling of Air.

Chevrolet has also added cooling ducts in various parts of the Car’s body especially in the front half for cooling the Engine and Brakes and Diffusers at the rear.

  • Body Colored Brake Cooling ducts in the Front Bumper and near the Rear Fender that channels air coming towards the Car into the Brakes hence aiding in cooling of the brakes.
  • Grand Sport Badging on the Side Vents near the Front Fenders
  • Rear Spoiler with Balancing Crews which allows these Pivots to be adjusted hence making the Spoiler adjustable by the driver as per the down force
  • Body Colored Heat Extractor over the Bonnet
  • Michelin Pilot Super Sport 19”/20” tires on Front/ Rear respectively
  • Rear diffuser around the Quad Exhausts

The IIHS and NHTSA are yet to rate the Grand Sport. However GM has fitted the Corvette with Safety Features that can be also found in other Cars of these class. The Chassis has also been made using copious amount Aluminum and some Carbon Fiber Materials which helps reducing Crash Impacts and increases occupant protection and Safety. Some of the other features include

  • Lightweight Brembo 19”/20” Steel Rotors with an option of Carbon ceramic Brakes on the Z07 package which allows better Heat Dissipation from the Rotors and enhanced braking performance.

  • StabiliTrak Electronic Stability control.

Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport Convertible vs. Porsche Boxster 718 GTS

Porsche’s have always been known to be the Best driver’s Car in the world. The 718 Boxster is an addition to that line up of superb driving Cars. The Corvette wants to beat the Porsche in terms of driving but the Porsche is still, in a league of its own. This comes at a price too as the Porsche is priced around $3,000 more than the 3LT variant of the Corvette. Throw the Corvette around a corner on a race track and the Race focused character will match the timings of the Porsche or even better it every time. Also, the Corvette Grand Sport offers a bit more comfortable ride than the Porsche which has been a bit stiffly sprung.

Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport Convertible vs. Jaguar F-Type

The Jaguar F Type has been a popular choice among Motoring enthusiasts who wanted the Best that Britain could offer in an affordable price Range. The Jaguar does tick many of those boxes as well and is priced very similarly to the Corvette hence the comparison. But when we dive deep into the comparison both theoretically and practically, other than the Build, Sound and the looks (which may be subjective), the Jaguar struggles to keep up with the Corvette. The driving dynamics and the performance of the Corvette will ensure great Race Track performance. Also, on a daily basis, the Corvette will be easier to live with because of the less Harsh suspension setup, Better Gas Mileage and cheaper and easily available spares.

Final Verdict

As we said in the starting of this Review, the 2018 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport Convertible had been introduced by GM to provide the best of both worlds to the consumer. It has the Engine from the Stingray which is less “Hooligan” than the one found on the Z06 and the suspension and Tires have been carried from the Z06 which makes it an absolute track beast. The “Lower” specification engine also ensures better MPG figures and overall a better Car to live with due to the less “Frantic” nature of the Motor and the ability to stay relaxed if you want it to. The Corvette Grand Sport also carries with itself the “Grand Sport” badge which is a great Racing Heritage for over 65 years now. So, if you want a Sports Coupe that has the ability to behave like a Normal Car most of the time having the ability of going absolutely “Bonkers” when you want it to, the Corvette Grand Sport is a Car that deserves your attention.
