Detailed Review

The Sports car markets is like a tight baseball team, there are standards, proficiencies, and caliber which are essential to be the part of this elite group. For a long time Germans have been the Vatican of sports car engineering and the stewards of these standards, but our engineers not far behind. The Corvette Stingray convertible is a America’s badass sports car, it was cut from the same cloth like the Camaro but picked up sport car values along the way. This is the C7 generation and boasts its Eloquent design with a glitzy styling bolder than a Tom Ford’s fashion show. There is no tangible flaw with the Stingray but is fun to nitpick these cars.

Expert Review

CARHP Editorial March 15, 2019

You may like the ZL1’s newly cultivated 755 horses but what you wouldn’t like is the money slaying price. The 2019 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray operates in the large market where people like to rev, speed-up, and take corners like a boss, but they don’t want to spend a fortune on their passionate hobby. The Stingray starts at $56,995 and features a 6.2L V8 engine mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission. The engine can amass a maximum 455 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. You can equip your Corvette with the Z51 package which enhances its skill as a race car.

2019 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible Features

Being the entry level Corvette, Chevy starts the convertible Stingray’s bid at $61,495 with the 1LT trim. There are two other models the 2LT and 3LT which further add more performance cosmetics and better safety suit. Chevrolet carefully fitted a monochromic V8 engine with a seven-speed manual transmission, an 8-speed automatic transmission is optional on the Stingray.

The 1LT trim is well equipped with a rich feature list, while the 2LT and 3LT further improving the livable conditions inside the Corvette, however, there is no mechanical change as you climb up the trim ladder. To add more flair to the Corvette you can add the Z51 package which amplifies the sporty vibe with more features. You get a sport tuned suspension, electronic limited slip differential, dual-performance exhaust, dry sum oiling and more. You can add the L51 package with all three trim levels.

2019 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible Engine

“The Corvette just sticks to the ground and isn't bothered by mid-corner corrections or bumps. It changes directions unbelievably quick, with negligible body roll and drama. Unfortunately, it's a challenge to recover the back end if you push past the car's limits”- Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

Let’s level with America on this one, we all want big engines. We like the V6s but love the V8s, keeping that in mind our American homeboy, Chevy continuous the tradition by bringing the same 6.2L V8 engine back for the 2019. The engine is mated to a 7-speed stick shift transmission. Though an optional 8-speed automatic is still there on the Stinger. The powerplant can muster 455 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque.

You can equip the Stingray with a performance exhaust which magnifies all the pops and crackles and brings out the best of Corvette’s 455 horses. The engine’s power fires up the rear wheels of the Corvette. While the Stingray harbors a healthy V8 the prime center of attraction is the afresh ZR1 which hammers out a whopping 755 horses. You might be in the awe of the newly tuned ZR1 but the Stingray offers a solid performance and flawless power delivery.

Acceleration

Nail down the accelerator and endure the gut punch that the Corvette stings to your body. You will be pinned back to your seat flabbergasted with the 455 horses worth of G Force. The response is best at half and full throttle with power oozing out from every range of the rev. The Vette makes the 60 mph test a little under 4 seconds which is nothing less than impressive. You might be begging to get your hands on the ZR1’s 755 horses but this one is enough to drop your jaw.

Ride and Handling

The Stingray’s power won’t sting its performance or handling prowess like in the ZR1. All 455 horses are usable and brings out the best of the Corvette. The razor sharp steering is what makes its fun to drive however, road . This fact becomes more eminent on high speeds and meddle with its predictability. The Stingray takes corners like a badass with negligible body roll. The Z51 adds Performance Traction Management and Magnetic Selective ride control keeps the Stingray planted overcome the lapse of road communication.

Braking

There are two things which hijacks all the Corvette’s compliments towards its driving prowess, one is its healthy engine and the other is its strong braking dynamics. And the best part is that its not firm or oddly taxing to your foot which most of the sports cars are. Rear wheel drive and front engine balances out the ride making it more controllable at high speeds,

2019 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible Fuel Economy

The naturally aspirated V8 on the Corvette convertible may have an appetite for fuel. But surprisingly this muscle based sports runs on a strict diet. In city you can expect a 16 mpg mileage while on the highway it pushed this number to 25 mpg. Combined you have a total mileage of 19 mpg which is fair for sports car standards.

Efficiency is one place where Corvette gets a hard time keeping up. The 19 mph mileage is the lowest in the lot while other convertibles are over 20 mpg combined mileage. The Porsche 718 and Mercedes C Class are the segment leaders as far as efficiency is concerned.

2019 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible Interior

“For a relatively small two-seater, the Corvette surprisingly doesn't feel cramped. The control layout is thoughtful, and the driving position is quite adjustable. Visibility and entry and exit are problematic, however”- Edmunds

Seating and Comfort

The Stingray’s interior doesn’t share the same extroverted nature as its exterior do. However, it has aged well and wont strike claustrophobia down the boarders hearts like it did before. Since Chevy list the Corvette under performance car, its interior is more driver focused and doesn’t promote any distractions. The low height will make getting in and out an odd endeavor. The low height is compensated with a high seating position, however, you can easy find the right position with adjustable steering and seats. The convertible variant suffers for pounding wind noise, this might not be extreme but you can control it with a wind blocker to keep your experience pure.

As you hit the road, you will have a good look of the street of highway. This promotes confidence and helps in spirited driving. The thin pillars overcomes the bad cross view problem which was evident in the Camaro. All the controls are in vicinity to the driver and the quality is right for the price. You won’t find any necessary plastics in the Corvette, though its competitors are all game when it comes to interiors. As for options you have three seat color options, grey, black, and red.

Cargo volume

Performance cars are built to perform, so it’s obvious they prioritize handling over utility, well the Stingray begs to differ. The flat cargo bay can swallow more suitcases for your weekend escapade than you expect a convertible to do. You get a total of 10 cubic feet worth of cargo volume. The coupe variant saves an additional 5 cubic feet which is used to harbor the automatic roof top in this one. Inside the cabin, there are not much palaces to put your stuff but that’s nitpicking, you can totally manage the cabin.

Infotainment

The Corvette comes standard with an 8-inch infotainment screen. The Chevrolet’s MyLink infotainment system is delivers fast response and has an easy to use interface. Chevy brought all their artillery and installed in this sports machine. You get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity as standard features. Also, the Stingray us backed with voice activated technology to access the Radio and Phone.

2019 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible Exterior

“Low-slung and brash, the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette looks almost exotic”- The Car Connection

Design and Styling

This is the continuation for the seventh generation of Corvette and its as loud as ever. The Corvette might get a hyper car reaction on the streets but the styling is too extroverted. Some people may not like the over the top design. The soft rear end on the C6 used to be tasteful with its round lights but now the rear end is more menacing and full of character. The fine lines on the hood enhances the drag coefficient and the functional hood air extractor doesn’t intrude the design flow. The beefed up rear end has a muscle car vibe while the low heighted hood is a true sports car hallmark. The tug of war with drag is enhanced on the convertible Stingray.

There is a cropping of customization options with 10 vivid paint options. You can further personalize it to a racings machine with a galore of Stripes and decal options. There are 9 alloy wheel options plus you can get the accessories from Z06 and ZR1. Chevy gives a multitude of options for rear spoilers. However, these options will add onto your cost. The automatic soft top roof opens and closes on and under the speed of 30 mph.

The Stingray will sure turn heads but if you get deep into the portions its smaller than the Grand Sport and Z06. But there is no visual impact of that. The Stingray is 176.9 inches long right from its elongated headlights to the muscle hunch rear. Width is rated at 73.9 inches from ear to ear. As for the height, its low roof says it all, though for the sake of stats the Stingray is 48.8 inches tall lower than all its competitors. The short wheelbase of 106 inches makes handling fun and easy. The central qual exhaust makes you presence felt and puts a full stop at this work of art.

2019 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible Safety

The 2019 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible offers speed, control, and practicality, though the lack of third party crash testing puts the safety angle in haze. Still Chevy infused a lot of safety features which takes care of the Stingray convertible.

2019 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible Competition

Porsche 718 Boxster vs Corvette Stingray

The 718 Boxster is the Hermes of entry level sports cars. Its handling is razor sharp, you can say it’s the Porsche treatment which couldn’t be explained it could only be experienced. As much Chevy tries to trump that feeling, Porsche is the winner as far handling goes. Another area where the Boxster makes an impact is mileage. The Corvette tries to fill in the gaps Porsche left with low priced customization, a bigger cargo bay, and better drag strip performance.

You can go with the Corvette any day but the baby Porsche 718 is the one to get if you want to experience the real sports car experience.

BMW M240i Convertible vs Corvette Stingray

The German farmland for Sports muscles is not scares of competitive cars. Beemer made is clear what they are delivering unfortunately it was in the Stingray’s way. The lack of power is a clear turn off for many buyers however, the BMW makes up for it in the practicality area. You can ferry a couple of suit cases and can use it as an easy to go daily driver. But there is not much options to customize and the Corvette delivers a lot of them.

Another thing where BMW under performs is with its handling. Its sharp but not up to the Corvette game.

2019 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible Final Verdict

For a long time Corvettes were associated with the bad boy image. High speeds, reckless attitude, and the muscle car mystic wrapped in the sports car body was the usual alias for Corvette. But todays Corvette is about bridging the gap from a teenager’s dream to a practical sports animal. Though there is only space for two, Chevy made the most out of that space. The interior is not that fascinating but its more driver focused. The drivers seat looks more like a cockpit with every switch closely located. As for the handling the Stingray pulls a treat at every corner and the V8’s power can be fully unleashed not like the illogical 755 horses on the ZR1.

The Stingray’s cargo bay might not be that intriguing but its more than any performance car would provide. So, overall the Stingray is what an ideal performance muscle should be like and even delivers more.
