Overview

A missile on the sheets and a total bomb on the streets this iteration of the Corvette is fearfully inspiring, awe-inducing, jaw-droppingly powerful example of automotive feat that reeks of ‘Murica. Quintessentially American and unapologetically unabashed on the tracks this one is for the history books folks.

The pallbearer of the Corvette alas it won’t be inappropriate to say that this is the Corvette of Corvettes for this year, the 2017 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Convertible is truly once in a generation phenomena. If ‘Fantastic Beasts and where to find them’ was about cars then the Chevrolet HQ would be the epicenter all thanks to this one.

Starting at an MSRP of $84,590, the Corvette offers unmatched performance to price and features that the rivals charge a hefty premium for. There is no match to the brute power that the Corvette offers in the US market directly. For comparison purposes, we have today taken the 2017 BMW 650i 2door Convertible, 2017 Mercedes Benz SL 550 Roadster, and the 2017 Porsche Carrera S Cabriolet as the rivals for the Corvette due to their similar pricing.

Trim we would choose

If we were to pick one of the variants, we would go for the 2LZ as it offers more features than the 1LZ but it doesn’t make you feel bad for not going for the 3LZ as most of the necessary and performance oriented equipment comes in standard in the 2LZ.

“Objectively, this thing is just INSANE!” – Doug DeMuro, Top Youtuber

The Most Powerful Corvette in History, the Z06 offers consumers performance which could be only accessed by people with Race Car Licenses or with Big Bank Balances. The Z06 has some Mind Numbing performance which makes you feel Active and Energetic every time you drive.

Engine and Transmission

Powering this ‘Hulk’ from Chevrolet is a 6.2L Supercharged LT4 V8 motor delivering 650 [email protected],400 rpm and 650 lbs-ft of Torque @ 3,600rpm. This monstrous power is transferred to the rear wheels via a 7 Speed Manual Transmission with active rev matching or an 8 Speed Automatic Gearbox with paddle Shifters. Also, the Dry Sump Oil System, Direct Injection Continuous Variable Valve Timing and 2 Valves per Cylinder configuration (Direct Overhead Camshafts or DOHC) makes the Engine roar at the drop of a hat.

Another reason for the improved power figures is the increase in the Speed of rotation of the Supercharger which now rotates at 20,000 RPM as compared to the 15,000RPM of last year.

Acceleration

The acceleration from this 650 HP V8 Corvette Convertible can be best termed as ‘Bewildering’. This Corvette can go do a 0-60 mph sprint in just 2.95 seconds(as claimed by Chevrolet) which is Class Leading in terms of outright performance and also puts to shame some Supercars which cost Twice or Thrice the price of this car. Also, the 650 lbs-ft of Torque ensures you reach “BreakNeck” speeds in no time and you may have to think twice, before fully pressing the acceleration pedal. This Raw, Visceral feel from the Engine and the acceleration means one needs to have some good Driving Skills to max out this performance if you ever want to do so.

The 650 horses present under the hood unlike a Rolls Royce aren’t meant for cruising but quite the polar opposite. Like a racehorse, this car since its inception was meant to push the very limits of the automotive industry, with each and every component meant to make the car quicker and more agile than the previous generation it’s not surprising that this car is class leading in this parameter. With less than 3s on the clock for hitting 60, the competition isn’t even in the same league.

With the Porsche coming in at the second with 4.2s on the clock the American establishes dominance with this’ vulgar display of power’ just like Pantera. If you want to measure the Performance and various other data parameters regarding the performance anytime, Chevrolet has equipped the Corvette with a Performance Data Recorder (PDR) by Cosworth.

Brake and Handling

For Stopping a Car with this Level of Performance, the Brakes have to be not just good, but the Best. Chevrolet has done the same and provided the Corvette Z06 Convertible with Steel Brakes supplied by Brembo (who are the best in the business when it comes to braking). The Front brake units have 6 Pistons and Aluminium calipers while the Rear brakes have 4 Pistons with Aluminium Calipers. You also have the option of upgrading to an Amazing Carbon Ceramic Braking package with the Z07 performance package which reduces the weight of the car by approximately 10kgs and drastically improves braking performance.

To add to the confidence of the driver, Chevrolet say that the Chassis has been made lighter and 20% stiffer than the previous generation to aid the handling characteristics of the car. The Magnetic Ride Control adjusts the damping system in the front and rear in just 15 milliseconds to adapt to the changing road conditions and steering inputs. The Double Wishbone Suspension in the Front and Rear offer Race Car like Ride and handling and great cornering ability. The Standard Electronic Limited Slip Differential comes with a hydraulically adjustable Clutch and fully opens up during braking to make the Corvette exceptionally stable during braking.

The Tires fitted to the Corvette Z06 Convertible are the Michelin Pilot Super Sports which offers superb road and track performance as it has been specifically developed by Michelin in conjunction with the Corvette Racing Team. However, one must note that while these offer superb levels of grip, these tires don’t last that long and wear out in approximately under 4000 Miles if you use them extensively.

The Standard Rear Spoiler on the Z06 Convertible provides added downforce and aerodynamic efficiency to keep the Corvette planted on the Road as you try to go past 3 Digit Speeds. The updated bodywork also allows better cooling of the Engine and the Supercharger as well.

Fuel Economy

6.3/10

This is a segment most Corvette owners wouldn’t want to look at. The big 6.2L delivers Herculean levels of Performance at the cost of MPG figures. The 18.5 Gallon fuel tank offers approximately 333 Miles of driving range. However, Chevrolet has a Clever Trick up its sleeves. They have a technology called the “Active Fuel Management” which is GM’s take on Cylinder Deactivation Technology which is activated when you press the ‘ECO’ mode.

The Active Fuel Management cuts off supply to 4 Cylinders under light load conditions offering better Mileage and lower emissions. However, the system disengages automatically when you step on the throttle hard again when you feel you need a bump in Power or change driving modes.

A definitive upgrade over the previous generations the 2017 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 sports hand stitched Napa leather seats that are heated and ventilated. The build quality could use further improvement especially when compared to the European rivals.

One of the Standout points in the Driver-oriented cabin of the Corvette is the Seating which are Competition Seats available as Standard. This offer pronounced side bolsters to the Driver and the passenger seat which keeps them hooked to the seats when accelerating hard or cornering hard.

Cargo Volume

There are a decent number of Cubby Spaces and Bottle Holders inside the cabin of the Corvette which will be enough for keeping your phones or other small packages. However, the biggest compromise of this convertible is the trunk space which offers very little space to keep stuff when the Top is down. One must keep in mind though that this is a problem with all Convertibles and the Chevy does offer decent space when compared to the Competition.

Dimensions and Weights

The Dimensions of the 2017 Corvette Z06 remains mostly unchanged from the previous year model. There are certain interesting bits in the Exteriors that attract a lot of Attention. There is a Cut made on the Long Hood of the Corvette to surround that Massive Supercharger inside the Engine bay which would otherwise not fit under the Hood. The Rear Spoiler also grabs a lot of Eyeballs which adds to the functionality of the Car as well as improving the overall aesthetics of the Car. The Fenders are fatter and there are Cuts and creases all over the Body of the Corvette with Body Scoops to enhance air flow and improve Aerodynamics of the Car.

The Chassis has generous use of Aluminium in the frame of the Car to keep the weights down and add to the Structural Rigidity of the Chassis.

Competition

Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Convertible vs. Mercedes Benz SL 550 Roadster

One of the Top Rivals to the Corvette, The Mercedes trumps the Chevy in Interior Space, Head room and leg room for the Driver and Passenger and Cargo Volume. The Mercedes is definitely the car which offers a more spacious and practical and well-Built cabin which is built to last than the Chevy. However, if a convertible performance sports car is what you are looking for, the Corvette is the way to go. The Corvette demolishes the Mercedes SL 550 in every performance parameter that you choose.

Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Convertible vs. BMW 650i Convertible

The BMW is similar in dimension and interiors to the Mercedes hence one can definitely see that the “Teutonic Knight” has its nose ahead against the American Brawler here. The Bimmer also outshines the Corvette in overall handling and ride dynamics. The Corvette though has taken plenty strides forward in leaps and bounds to improve its Handling and cornering abilities against the previous iteration, it still has to cover some miles to match the dynamic precision of the Bimmer. The BMW, however, is no match to the Corvette’s outright power muscle and it is where the American Muscle outshines the BMW.

Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Convertible vs. Porsche 911 Carrera S Convertible

The 911 Carrera S has always been the Natural Rival to the Chevy whenever comparisons are made. The Corvette is America’s best offering for many whereas the Porsche is Europe’s best and the Benchmark of Handling and Driving precision for Motoring Enthusiasts around the world. The Porsche sure can’t match the Sledgehammer power of the Corvette but it does redeem itself in pure driving exhilaration. Also, the Porsche has Well build Interiors and every switch and knob has been placed in the most perfect position with the Driver in mind. However, the Porsche costs around almost $20,000 more than the Corvette here and it’s very difficult to overlook what the Corvette offers for the price difference.

Final Verdict

Arguably a controversial statement but in this world of sensationalism, it won’t be incorrect to say that the 2017 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Convertible might just be the best American car to be ever built.Rivaling or surpassing even its European rivals twice or thrice of its price the Corvette is the ultimate amalgamation of luxury, performance, and price that won’t be rivaled for a few years, to say the least.
